I bought a groupon for a keratin treatment. I did my very first keratin treatment last year and loved it! I chose this salon for two reasons: they use the same keratin treatment that I used last year (la brasiliana) and it got fairly good reviews. I gave this review 2 stars because the owner, who happened to apply the keratin, is very nice. The staff at the salon seemed overall nice but that didn't mean that I got what I wanted. The whole treatment lasted less than an hour and a half which I thought was very unusual. I had told Sheryl, the owner, that my keratin last year took almost 4 hours. She told me that it didn't take that long. She applied the keratin (from a bowl, I never saw the actual product bottle) in large chunks of hair as opposed to smaller sections. She straightened my hair just as I normally would, again, not it smaller sections. I went home and waited the required 24 hours. I showered and washed my hair accordingly- using sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. My hair began to dry and I started to notice that the frizz was setting in and that my hair felt and looked just like it normally is without any products. I was so upset and frustrated!! Nothing had changed after the keratin treatment. I'm posting a pic of the moment my hair fully dried after the keratin this time around vs last year's. They look absolutely nothing alike. I'm posting a pic of the day after (just sleeping on top of my hair) and again you can tell that something isn't right. I didn't use ANY products on my hair last year after my keratin, not even a straightener. Not sure what Mavida salon used on my hair but it was not la brasiliana keratin that's supposed to last 3 months. On the bright side I got a full refund from groupon. Side note- I called la brasiliana office/headquarters to ask whether or not it was safe for me to redo my keratin after a failed attempt. I had a great experience ! I was running about 10 minutes late but they were still so friendly towards me when I walked in. I decided to get my hair dyed a dark dark brown. I was a little hesitant but my hairdresser helped answer any questions I had and helped boost my confidence. i am glad i listened to her because I LOVE it. I enjoyed the whole process, and they kept the doors open in the front which was so nice because we got to feel the breeze from outside as she was doing my hair. The price is extremely fair. I have been living in north jersey for years now, I usually only get my hair done from groupon or living social deals (how i found this place) but now I can finally say I found my go-to place. I used Groupon for cut deep conditioning and full highlight. Cheryl gave me a good haircut and color came out nice. She suggested to color my roots too which is extra 25 and to tone it down is extra 20 . I didn't get the blowout and style coz I know its extra so she said I can just go under the dryer which is fine. The lady in the front desk even offer me a drink.I got lots of compliments including my husband. Cheryl gave me a price how much if I dont use Groupon coz she told me I cannot use it anymore its only 1 time promo per costumer and it's still reasonable. I bought a Groupon for the salon and it was totally delightful. I was greeted from everybody as soon as I walked in and it was not treated differently because I bought a Groupon. They gave me a complementary blow dry Which I appreciate it highly. That level of hospitality is what will make me go back and make them my regular. I went to Mavida for the first time in February after buying a Groupon for Keratin and haircut. Cheryl, the owner did my hair. She explained me right away and before doing anything that the Brazilian keratin treatment will not make my hair completely straight but brighten them, nourish them and facilitate the straightening process. I have very curly and dry hair so I did not expect much but the treatment really made them look beautiful. I was really satisfied and went back yesterday for the second treatment (after 4 months!). Cheryl accepted to take my appointment even though it was expected to last after her regular working hours, which I really appreciated due to my busy working schedule. Tl;dr: don't get keratin done here (specifically paid for on Groupon). The owner herself is an indication of what kind of service you will receive. She is loud, aggressive, and invalidating of her clients' concerns. I've been getting Keratin done in Manhattan for about a decade now and have never had an issue. I moved out of the city and bought this deal on Groupon, hoping I'd found my new spot. I took a day off work and went. I believe Patti did my Keratin, but I may be getting her name wrong. As soon as she applied it, I knew it was wrong and started barraging her with questions. She said their keratin is different than what I'm used to because it has no chemicals. I know I need chemicals for my extremely thick and curly hair. I told her so. She said this is what they offer and not to worry. I followed the standard procedures they explained for post-keratin treatment and my hair was immediately super curly and frizzy. Huge disappointment #1. Between working 4 jobs, I made time to call at least once a week to speak with someone about correcting it and never, not once, did the phone get answered. I'd call back days later and had the same experience. It's an hour drive in a direction I don't ever go, so I couldn't just pop in. I finally decided to give Mavida one last chance. Beginning last Monday (8 days ago), I called Mavida 5 times a day (in between my 2 full time and 2 part time jobs) during various hours to try to speak with someone. No one ever answered! But, today, I finally got through to someone on my 5th call of the day, and she had the owner call me back. When she called, she almost immediately dismissed me, told me it's "impossible" that I had called so many times and no one answered and then began to list all of the hours she had been at the shop that week, trying to prove me wrong. I asked her if she wanted me to text her a screen shot of all my call logs and she said no. These semantics didn't need discussion, as I was calling to see if they could honor their work and redo my keratin. Between demeaningly calling me "sweetie" and "honey," she told me that there was no way the keratin was done wrong (despite the fact that she didn't perform it herself and didn't know this for a true fact), insisted that I hadn't ever called before because I never left a voicemail message (indeed I hadn't because voicemails in large businesses either go unanswered or they call back when I'm working and we play cat & mouse for days), and finally that she would fix it if I paid for it. Why on earth would I pay AGAIN for something that didn't work the first time? After dealing with this nonsense for a month and a half, I've just called my credit card to dispute the charge. I will be forwarding them the call logs that show I called 54 TIMES in the last month and a half, as well as pictures of my hair before and after the treatment, which look exactly the same, if not worse. I expected better demeanor from the owner, but now know that I will never return here, and will certainly make sure my story deters others from wasting their money here. There are hundreds of places that will do a fantastic keratin job and stand by their work. Mavida is, hands down, not one of those places. The owner will, indubitably, reply to this stating something that is meant to give you the impression she is pleasant and helpful. Do not be deceived. The other low-star reviews should show you that this is a business that needs new ethics. read more

I have not been to a hair salon in years because I just don't feel comfortable sometimes, but having went to this salon was the best decision I have made. I love that it is a few blocks from my house and i absolutely love the staff, they are all so kind. I was offered coffee and cookies various times, this is a first for me. Cheryl was really nice and thoughtful,you can tell she really cares about your hair, because she did not want to damage my hair more by doing highlights. I took my baby boy with me and my stylist which I can't remember her name (she is blonde with glasses) took care of me and was extremely considerate the entire time. I went to the salon looking like a MESS, and she made my hair look OUTSTANDING! She even has the iron the sucks the steam to prevent you from smelling all the chemicals!! I tried Mavida on a whim using a Groupon. I was greeted with hellos and smiles as soon as I walked in. My stylist, Andrea, introduced herself and asked if I wanted coffee or water. We chatted about my cut and color, she asked me some questions and we settled on a color. The color was perfect and the hair cut was super flattering. All the time, we struck up an easy banter. Despite the probably 25 year age difference (me being on the higher end!). The salon was very busy, but kept very clean. Constant sweeping and wiping down of chairs. And they have cookie! Salons are the epitome of treating groupon customers like second class citizens. I had such high hopes this one would be different after reading some yelp reviews. NOPE. So first off I was hoping to talk to the stylist about making my highlights look more natural. Maybe throw in some low lites to blend it? "That'll be $5 a foil" ummm ok well then never mind. What do you think about cutting some layers? "I can't cut SOME layers, I'd have to layer all of it" pffffft ok. Then get this- she started in on the foils WITH THE LEFTOVER BLEACH from the previous client! Not only does that obviously not match my color but is it sanitary?! Then she splattered bleach on my leggings. So they're ruined. And said nothing. Then for the cut I asked her to definitely not take off the length. And like most scissors-happy stylists she did. The icing was she informed me that the Groupon didn't include a blow out. "That's Groupon for you." Ok you're the owner, you can do whatever you want. There's no Groupon police telling you to shaft me. But it DID include a "cut and style" so how do you style my wet head? How much to dry it I woefully asked. "$25" So I sat under a dryer while she just sat there waiting for her late customer- it's not like she had someone on deck. But to that point the other reviews are right- a customer asked her how many clients she was working on at one point and she said 3. Way to wedge me in and make me feel like you're really trying to earn my business. A 65 dollar Groupon seems like a great idea until you tip 30 and leave with a crappy cut and bad highlights mixed for someone else's hair. read more

Where do I begin? Mavida Salon was extremely welcoming and beyond attentive with clients. I couldn't ask for a better experience! The owner Cheryl fixed my highlights that another salon had botched. She did a great job without frying my hair! Not to mention, before booking the appointment and providing services, Mavida Salon requested that I come in to evaluate the condition of my hair. It took me a while to write this review for two reason. the first was that my keratin treatment took about 40 minutes. Which worried me in the beginning because I had read that it takes any where from two to three hours. I had my keratin treatment done by Cheryl on Sept 8. So I figured I would wait a month to make sure the treatment lasted. It did and i was really happy with the results. Then I got super busy and forgot to write the review. i followed the instructions to the t and I am very happy with the results. Very nice salon, and sweet staff. I will definitely be going back. Mavida is sort of hard to find because it is on a Main Street, but they do have some parking, or you can park on the side streets. Anyway, this was my first time here and this salon is friendly, accommodating, and very affordable. I had long, and dark hair and wanted to color my hair for the very first time. I had came in for a hair consult and spoke to Sophie and Cheryl on what kind of magic they could pull on my damaged, long black hair. I then scheduled an appointment with them, and was very lucky that they could squeeze me in on New Year's Eve (new hair new me lol.) As I came in, Sophie took me in right away, and started working on my hair. She was VERY, VERY, gentle, patient, and knew the exact colors I wanted. After a few hours, my hair was finally finished, and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the outcome, and it did not cost me an arm a leg to do it! On the fence.. I got keratin by a Andrea. Was terrible. She didn't dry hair throughly before applying and ironed in huge chunks. I've had this brand keratin many, many times and it's been wonderful. Never applied like this tho. I did mention my hair was still damp, and usually smaller sections are flat ironed. But she insisted her technique was perfectly fine.My bad for not stopping her and making a scene but I'm not like that. Granted it was a groupon and 3 months ago but it sucked from day1.I didn't complain bc I didn't have time to redo anyway. Went for color last weekMentioned to Rico. Told me to call Cheryl. Ok. What the heck right? Very nice to offer free redo with Andrea. Day before my appointment Andrea is gone.. Now, free redo in Nov when Owner is back(maybe), or $100 Groupon price now. Stewing on it tho...It's not about paying the money. My biz is satisfaction oriented and I'm paid on production too. Redos at No charge is Cost of doing business. 11 stylists and no one but owner can redo? $9 a piece to keep a client that lives across the street and needs color at least once a month+ keratin+highlights +blowouts for special occasions . Not worth it?? Mixed feelings for sure. Priorities seem wrong. At least based on my experience. If someone did work for a patient and that patient isn't happy and that patient rolls in on my day..I'm obligated to fix at no charge. Tried expressing my feelings with Cheryl. She was in a rush but I kind of expected a call back like I'd have done at my profession. It's not even my office! Really would have loved for this to be "my spot". So convenient but Can't quite wrap my head around MAVIDA biz model. Sadly seems it's Finance first, client satisfaction next. Hated writing this review because it really didn't want to burn this bridge but this just doesn't seem right to me. Trust me, I HATE redoing others work for free but as mentioned, it the cost of doing business for patient/client retention and subsequent referrals. ???????? ‍sorry but I just can't swallow it. As stated, I appreciated the offer although NOT solicited as I didn't report it until I was able to get back for color. And appreciated the free conditioner.. but.... The offer for free redo WAS very nice considering it was 3 months ago, but, expecting me to wait at least a month because another operator could not be reimbursed for his/her effort from profits is still mind-boggling. $100 bucks cost Mavida minimally at least 1/month color, keratin every 3-4 months, occasional blowouts, and regular waxing‍. Priorities I guess. I hope it was worth the $100. I had my keratin redone in a different salon, also very close by because I didn't want to wait and just couldn't pay again for a botched service. Price was close to MAVIDA Groupon price. In my professional world, all providers in the office represent the office not just themselves. Think how outraged you'd be if your front tooth broke, you paid to fix it, it broke again a week later and they charged you again because the operator that fixed it was no longer there. Patti has been cutting my hair for 33 years, and is so amazing I can't even explain. She's done everything from a late 80s spiral perm, to my signature short choppy cut. She is creative, efficient and knows exactly what look goes on what face. I never let anyone else cut my hair and I love how she uses the razor on me. On a whim, I purchased a Groupon for Mavida Salon. As soon as I walked through the door, I was greeted with enthusiastic smiles. The entire staff was so welcoming, as if I'd been a regular since they opened. I had the pleasure of my hair getting highlighted by Katie. We took time to discuss what I wanted, her suggestions, and said let's go for it! My hair came out absolutely GORGEOUS! I couldn't be more pleased! One star is generous!!! This has got to be the WORST place I had ever been to. I liked a friend of mines hair style so she recommended this place & I should have Melissa cut my hair. Made my appointment & was very excited to get my hair done. My first impression upon walking in was that I walked into a circus freak show. From the owner to each "cutter" one freakier than the next. The owner stared me down not even saying hello. I told her I had an appointment with Melissa & she told me to go find her outside. So I went back outside to find 2 women talking & I asked if one of them was her. I was then told to go back inside to get my hair washed. After getting my hair washed I stood there not knowing which station to go to. After a few minutes, Melissa "hand motioned" me from across the room to her station. I explained the cut I wanted & she said no problem that she knew exactly what I was talking about. The next day I saw my friend to show her & to my dismay it was NOT the cut I wanted so she called Melissa & told her. I was told to come back & it would be fixed. I went but again NOT the style I had asked for. They are NOT a friendly place & seem to refuse to give the style one wants. NOT GOOD read more
