Friend and I googled yarn shops in the area and Yarn on Front came up, so off we went to Dowagiac. This little shop is a gem. It was exactly what I was looking for. Unusual yarns from trusted yarn companies. And the owner (?) was very friendly and helpful. When I told her I did a lot of knitting for charity she directed me to the discount yarn bins. There was everything from affordable yarns for every day knitting to the "wow" yarns that one only buys for special people and occasions. Another customer came in and we joked about our yarn stashes (huge but always room for more). Very friendly people! I ended up buying more yarn than I planned just because I was so comfortable with the shop. The choices of needles was huge so I was able to get a circular knitting needle that I had been looking for. It's too bad I don't live in the area as I'd be back here a lot, buying more yarns to add to my stash. It's a lovely shop.

We even spoke about doing try on sizing before the group orders so we know the exact sizing. Easy fix and quick response. I highly recommend working with companies like this that care! We've used 18 Threads for our soccer team jerseys, and the sizing is completely inconsistent. The first batch we ordered came in super large, but after a year they finally fit our kids well. So this season we ordered the exact same sizes, expecting them to be the same. Instead, the new jerseys are way too tight -- the neck hole is tiny, the arms are hard to get into, and the length is so short they're practically belly shirts. What makes it worse is that when compared to the exact same size from our old jerseys, they are completely different. Youth Large should fit 12-14 and Youth XL should fit 14-16, but the new jerseys are nowhere close. Instead, Youth Large fits more like an 8-10, and Youth XL like a 10-12. Even our practice jerseys -- which normally run smaller than game day jerseys -- are still larger than these new cuts. For reference, the white photo shows a Youth XL practice jersey compared to the current game day jersey, and the green-on-green photo shows a Youth Large old game day jersey compared to the new Youth Large game day jersey. The fabric is fine, but the sizing is so unreliable that it feels like a total waste of money since our kids can't even use them.

We really enjoyed the variety of discounted fabric bolts available; and especially had fun digging through the scrap bin, to assemble a $5 bag of nice pieces. We also purchased a beautiful finished runner, quilted by the owner's mother. This is definitely a shop we hope to revisit, when again in the area.
