We had an awesome experience with this surf school. Myself and my 12 year old daughter went together. We signed up for the group lesson but it ended up being just 4 people with 2 instructors so my daughter and I had our own instructor which was amazing. Our instructor was Eddie and he did a great job. He was with us, helping us and coaching us every step of the way. The location was also perfect for beginners. Despite having no experience we were both able to catch and stand up on several waves. One FYI is that using the address they give our maps was directing us to a place across the street. You want to park in the beach park parking lot and find the truck with their name on it. This experience was the highlight of my vacation. read more

Booked this for our group of 3 adults and 2 children 10 and 12. The owner JB reached out and recommended we book semi private for the kids to ensure their safety. I completely appreciated that he cared enough about each customer to review the info and ensure their safety. We had a group of 6 with 2 instructors, Joey and Jordan. Joey was almost exclusively with the kids helping them paddle back out to sea and launch them. I was amazed but everyone in our group was standing up and surfing the moment they hit the ocean. They fitted everyone with a rash guard, water shoes and a surf board and provided instruction on dry land before heading off to sea. They also have a professional photographer for $30/person and photos were so so worth it. We had mentioned we had gotten married the day before and JB came down to the beach to give us some chocolate macadamias. Super thoughtful and a perfect sweet treat which my kids enjoyed in the car after a hard 2 hours surfing. All in all an amazing experience. Tip: park in the park across from Kihei Caffe. Dylan instructed both me and my wife. I've only surfed one time and it was 15 years ago and my wife has never surfed before. Dylan gave good instructions on land and had us practice on the ground before walking to the beach. He assisted us and made it very easy for me to shake the rust off and get on my board many times. Update as of March 28, 2025 (4 YEARS LATER) I see that JB has just left a response to my review IN ALL CAPS. So let me respond to your response. Our instructor was not booked with another family. In fact we confirmed several times that he was available for the consecutive days we were in town (otherwise we wouldn't have started lessons with Zach). The only reason I'm responding is because I can't let the story get twisted after 4 years. More importantly, it was the unprofessionalism in berating and shouting at a mother in front of her 10 year old when she was trying to clarify the situation. Had you calmly said that it was a scheduling mistake- no problem. Things happen. Shouting at a woman in front of her child and making a scene in front of your own employees and other customers is not acceptable (and remember your own employees came to me afterwards and apologized for your appalling behavior). Again, maybe it was a bad day, but the fact that you came on here FOUR YEARS LATER- means that not much has changed in your attitude. Yes you have several 5 star reviews and kudos to your staff for earning them for you. Kudos to you for dragging down your overall review for the 1 and 2 stars that you, yourself have contributed. Jordan was the best! So chill and informative, he really did a great job with myself and my husband as first time surfers. My teenage son, daughter and I had a magical two hours of learning to surf together. Our instructor Eddie was amazing, giving us top notch instruction with his calm and confident demeanor and positive vibe so that all of us were up and surfing in no time. Unlike the other schools, Eddie used his experience to guide us to the perfect spot on the coast (away from the others) for the best and most consistent waves to learn on. That's not to say we didn't have plenty of minor wipeouts, but we had a blast the entire time and finished with huge smiles on our faces. But getting up and surfing together was phenomenal. My girlfriend and I decided to try out surfing for the 1st time toward the end of our 2019 Hawaii Trip, and given their outstanding Yelp Reviews, we figured that we couldn't go wrong with Maui Beach Boys (and boy, were we right)! They were very easy to book, and when we got there, they set us up with shoes and long shirts. Afterward, we did a quick land lesson (where they provided us two options to get up), then out to the water we went! We had a fun time learning and riding waves with many other newbies, but JB thought we could have an even better experience by coming back early the next day ... and so we did! This time, we were basically seasoned professionals, and Viola took us way out there, so that we could catch much bigger waves and ride them for much longer! Viola also upped the ante by surfing in on a headstand, and it was cool to see that one of Viola's former school teachers was out there catching some waves as well (which suggested to me that we were being taught by those that saw surfing as a lifestyle)! Overall, our surfing experiences with Maui Beach Boys had a little bit of everything (including a surfing dog and a sea turtle), and we could really tell that it was important to them that we had an incredible experience! We booked them last minute late afternoon the day before through the Fairmont Kea Lani concierge. My 12 year old son has surfed before, but my daughter had not and she really wanted a lesson before we left Maui. They were very easy to find, right across the street from Kihei Cafe in the beach parking lot. We did a semi-private lesson with Jordan. He and everyone who was working that morning were extremely friendly and helpful. My kids thoroughly enjoyed the experience and said Jordan was a great instructor. Had an awesome time out this morning with beach boys. Our first time out surfing ever and we were all standing up riding waves pretty confidently by the end. My 8 year old daughter was up first try and only wiped out once. Compared to us wiping out more often than not. So don't be afraid to bring the young ones out to try! You never know. It was a pretty rigorous activity so after our buzz died down we were pretty wiped. But such a good time! Do it! And these are the guys to do it with. We got Bruce. Even though I was already a surfer, but am really rusty, I was able to get great tips from him regarding timing and turning. Service was five stars! One star knocked bc boards were banged up, but most surf schools boards are banged up- it just means they are really great eachers and get a lot of students! Bruce and owner JV were the most nicest guys ever. They love what they do! Would recommend getting photos, it's cheap,like $15. Worth it to have someone take photos of you while surfing. Best surfing experience you could've asked for! The team of instructors were amazing. They were very friendly and very keen to teach surfing. Both myself and my 5 year old son were surfing waves in no time. Typically my son is nervous about the water. The instructors made I'm feel safe and confident. It was prices less seeing the huge grin on his face as he throw a Shaka while riding in his own wave. He is hooked now! We have already booked our next family lesson this week. This is the experience I was looking for on Maui. All in all, this truly was an unforgettable experience. We showed up at the truck (in the parking lot across form Kihei cafe) at 7:40. Dylan got us all set up with shoes and long shirts. Then our instructor Jordan did a quick land lesson and out on the water. The waves here are great for beginners but not boring. They start by getting you up by pushing you. But by the end we were catching our own a few times! Only thing I didn't like was associated guy offering to take photos for extra money. They should at least have a go pro with instructors and give you ONE. Still $90 was worth it for the semi private for just the two of us. Also great spot to come back and rent board and use that area to keep practicing. Highly recommend. read more

We had our 2 nephews ages 17 and 14 and our 10 year old daughter and he gave them each just the right kind of instructions he just knew how to work with all ages! The kids were all up with in mins of being out there and by the time the lesson was over they were surfing by themselves! It was awesome! The absolutely best choice for surf lessons we could ask for! Unfortunately, we did not have an ideal experience. Looking forward to these lessons for quite some time, we expected 2 hours of instruction, just like it states online when we bought the lessons. Instruction ended almost 25 mins early so they could get ready for the next students. We would have appreciated this honesty upfront. Please be aware of the false advertising online. Surfing isn't something we get to do often, so to travel so far and spend so much, we were very disappointed. Aside from that, one of the instructors we had was not very kid-friendly. He was clear and concise with his directions, making sure we had options on how to stand up on the board. We are a family of four, a dad, mom and two boys 8 and 7. This was our second year in a row using Maui Beach Boys surf lessons. We all give them multiple thumbs up. Don't be thrown by the location of the surf schools in the Kihei parking lot. They will absolutely get you up on a surf board and surfing no matter your skill level. All of the instructors we've had have been terrific. We have had experience with Eric, Kyle, Padro, Joey and Jordan. They are confidence building for the kids, super fun, expert surfers, very supportive and give the kids something to look up to and are just really good guys. They come prepared with any/all the gear you need (including the boards, surf shoes, rash guards etc) But most importantly, they prioritize safety first, and add the humor, experience and insight into the Island itself to ensure you and your family will have had a fun and great time.
