Wife quoted us $120 for one on one surfing lessons for 90min. When we arrived the husband said $150 for 90 min lesson. When the lesson was over Scott informed us that we were required to tip the surf instructor. Benny was an excellent instructor, but I expected him to earn some of the $150. Great experience with Outrageous Surf. We recently took a week long surf camp in Costa Rica. So we were not first time surfers but still wanted some coaching. Ty, our instructor, was perfect. He respected that we didn't need the basics and got us right out on the water. Once we were out there, he gave us feedback on ways to improve. They started us off on longboards but quickly realized we didn't need the massive size. So he gave me his 8 ft board instead. Much better surfing after that. Waves are smaller- like 1 ft. I was blessed to be referred to Scott & Dana's Outrageous Surf company to get first time surf lessons in Maui for myself, my husband and my 7 year old, Scott took us to a mellow beach where we were able to be successful and had the whole beach practically to ourselves. This was our 5th trip to Maui and I am so glad we decided to take a surf lesson finally. Clyde our instructor was amazing! Super cool guy! Went in for a 90-min group surfing course with my husband. We are both capable skiers and love trying new sport. Instead of a learning experience, my husband and I were being pushed around the entire time and told we were too bad at paddling to surf, pushed back to shore after 30 mins. The instructor was a blonde teen apparently with no tolerance of learning curve and much gender bias--helped me with paddling, but clearly annoyed by my husband falling behind and offered little help. Eventually he asked us to give up. Another learner in my group was hit very hard by the board and bled. No ice was offer even when she asked. I can sense inclusion issue in this shop--the staff was 90% Caucasian white male except for one female co-owner. The instructor and owners didn't care to chat with me or my husband, focused entirely on Caucasian customers. We arrived a tad early and wasn't allowed to wait in the shop. We came back at exact time then was told to speed up. The other Caucasian customers clearly checked in earlier, so why couldn't we? Sanitation was concerning. Cockroaches and soaked cat food everywhere at the rinse-off spot. Water shoes hanging around smelling bad. None of the crew wore mask, even when staying in the shop. No visible wipes/spray/hand sanitizer. As if COVID does not exist... Refund wasn't an option at all. One star for the owner offering a free reschedule but we didn't have time for it. My family of 7 had Theo and Casey as our instructors. They made surfing a breeze. We started with a short on-land session before hitting the water. The surf spot was slightly crowded but our instructors used caution and got us out for about 10 waves each. Beware! Rude and will Raise the price on you. Even if you have their advertisement saying 2 surf for $100. We reserved for 3 and my son got scared and didn't want to surf. I told them this and it would only be 2 people. I'm sorry my 10 year got scared but I was not going to force him to do something he didn't want too. The guy we talked too all of sudden got pissed off, raised the price and said.. if I didn't like it. I can go somewhere else. Which we did. There was no way I was going to trust my kids in the hands of this lunatic. He was ranting at me. Someone needs to learn customer service. We've tried other surfing classes in Lahaina, but they were not even close to Outrageous Surf. At other places we spent a lot of time filling out paperwork, getting fitted for shirts and shoes, and practicing on the beach. The "group lessons" were so large we only got to try a few waves each. At Outrageous Surf, the owner Scott is no nonsense, and we had so much fun! We got to ride as many waves as we could handle. We got tired out paddling backed out to him for more waves before our 2 hours were done, I tapped out and had to tell Scott we were ready to go back in. Highly recommend, and Outrageous Surf will be our first stop the next time we're in Maui. read more

My husband and I took surfing lessons with Tyler. He explained to us it was a family business, with his parents being the owners. He gave us a quick run down on technique and then we were off to the water! He was great at giving us pointers throughout the lesson, keeping us safe from other beginner surfers, and helped give us a push into the wave to help with momentum. Both my husband and I had never surfed before but we both had fun and we were able to ride a lot of waves. They have lockers there to put belongings and give you water shoes and a long-sleeve shirt for surfing. You can also optionally pay $15 per person for pictures of you surfing, which we ended up regretfully not doing (next time!). All in all, we both recommend and can't wait to surf again when the opportunity arises. read more

My girls went surfing here today and they raved about it. The instructor was awesome and by the end of the lesson they were surfing like they were naturals. A few years back they took lessons in Tofino, Outrageous Surf in Lahaina, Maui was far superior! The instructor was giving them far more help and immediate instruction in the water. They even got to surf with a small dog on their board. How cool is that!. When I told the instructor that our Prime Minister owned a surf business in Tofino he commented that the PM should have stuck with surfing! LOL. We had a great time. I went last year on my first trip to Hawaii and didn't want to leave Maui without having the experience of surfing there. Outrageous was excellent, the instructor was Dylan and he was great! We walked with a small group of people from the academy to the beach and he quickly explained the basics to hop right in the board and learn. It was a great experience and I hope to come back soon. The instructors are kind and skillful. But they seemed not experienced as instructors. We are clear that nobody has any surfing experience. But instructors only taught how to stand up. That is it. One of the members, after being blown by a high wave, did not know what to behave properly since there is no safety instructions taught. And instructors did not even notice she was taken away by current. Later this girl got hurt like what the photo showed. In fact, she is best swimmer in our team. Although sea and swimming pool are totally different, there is good chance if she can be taught all the possible scenarios and what to behave accordingly. My suggestion is, instructors should teach or at least illustrate all of the following: 1. How to get on board and paddle efficiently 2. What to behave when wave comes 3. How to protect yourself in possible scenarios 4. How to stand up Seems this place only teaches 4. But 1-3 is definitely necessary for first time surfers. Also we don't expect everybody is taken good care like a 1-to-1 private lesson. But when somebody is missing, it is surprising that instructors don't even realize that. read more

Dylan was my daughter's instructor and he was incredible. My daughter is 10 and she has been surfing on and off for 2 years and so when she went out yesterday with Dylan, she had a blast. She literally killed out there. All the guys were so friendly and helpful. Super down to earth and just stoked to help you learn to surf. We will definitely be back to rent a board or surf just go out with an instructor. I highly recommend coming here for lessons. They are patient and they will definitely get you standing on a board. This was the perfect place for my first time surfing! The equipment was great, and Todd the instructor was AMAZING! He has the unique skill of surfing right behind you so you have a guaranteed successful ride. The beach was perfect and I had a blast with my brother. People are nice enough, but they way overbooked our lesson. they lumped 15 people together with 3 instructors. After a quick 10 minutes of instruction on the beach it's basically just letting us take turns riding waves. Too crowded to get any meaningful feedback especially when you consider that 4 other companies were sharing the same area we were for practice. I also understand that outside it is impracticak to wear masks while surfing. But nobody inside there shop wore masks when people were registering. There is no reason you can't wear a mask indoors and demand that you customers do the same. Skip this company and just get a friend to teach you. read more

I have never in my life had such a terrible experience with a lesson. Absolutely DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY!! Not only was the young instructor RUDE and unprofessional but he expected everyone to know what they were doing already. That is NOT the purpose of a lesson, by definition. Also, the owner is just as rude as her son. There is no customer service and there is no need to waste your money booking with them. Also, they never took pictures and they expected us as customers to carry their boards back and put them up for them after being absolutely so rude. The instructors and owners are nice. Very casual and were clearly experienced surfers. They were also accommodating when we left the lesson early. For that, I thank you. There were very large class sizes. Seven in my group. That's just too big to get anything done. They only spent about 10 minutes on the basics on the beach. I took a lesson from another school a few days prior and was at least prepared by them. I think the other students in this class were shorted important information. The surf spot where they teach is just too crowded. It resembles bumper cars. You can't paddle your board out without bumping into someone, let alone have space to learn to surf. There must have been more than 100 students from different schools all crowded into this one small space. My son, had his board bumped by an instructor from another school and that instructor actually got snotty with my son chastising him for being in the way. Are you kidding me?!! This isn't Outrageous' fault, but knowing it's so crowded should influence them to move to a less crowded surf spot. We left the water after two runs. It was just too crowded to do anything. We had a lesson from an amazing Maui surf school prior to this, with a low student to teacher ratio in a spot without the crowds, so we knew how awesome a lesson could be. I'm not even sure the instructor knew we left. Let me just share one last thing. Surfing instructors of Outrageous....get a pair of board shorts that fit and pull your board shorts up. I have no issue with you showing off your awesome abs- even wearing your board shorts a bit lower (as is the fad), but, I DO NOT NEED TO SEE ALL YOUR PRIVATE PARTS. I would not comment if this was only one instructor, but it was more than half of them in the shop that morning. To add context, I am a nurse. I have seen everything and it's hard to offend me...so that should speak volumes as to the awkwardness of interacting with someone and having to pretend to not be seeing what you're seeing. read more

This is a family business run by Scott and his wife, Dana. We came here two years in a row for SUP lessons. We debated whether we needed a lesson the second year, but the experience was so much better having a guide. Scott is super chill and patient and navigated us through the ocean with ease. I was able to really enjoy the experience without having to worry about safety. They are conveniently located on Front Street. Free parking is easy to find if you go early around 8am. read more

If I could give more stars, I would! My 9-year old was gifted a group lesson (found online). Called in to discuss a little more. We were encouraged to consider a private lesson. While he could have done the group lesson, I am SO glad we made the private lesson choice! He had a blast, easily caught 15-20 waves and learned a lot about paddling out, balance, and standing up! (We watched the group lesson going on simultaneously and they were doing great, too...but with a little one, I was so glad we made the choice to do a private lesson.) Very professional, knowledgeable staff...and EXCELLENT instructor (Moku, and sorry if I'm misspelling it!). We will definitely do it again when we return to Maui! I am so grateful that the first experience was such a great one! (A tip: my little guy is super skinny, and the water at the break wall was a little chilly for him.
