I was expecting it to be a throwaway babysitting session, which I paid for so he wouldn't feel left out, but it was surprisingly worth it. His instructor Kelani basically surfed in tandem with him, shuttling back and forth. I did not envy the workout, paddling back out into the ocean with my son happily perched at the front of the board like a big dog. After two hours, my son proclaimed, "We did 18 runs." Shout out to Austin our instructor; super fun and clear in his instructions and teaching! Surfing in Hawaii is a very fun activity to do and appropriate for all (healthy) ages. Goofy will give you a two hour surf lesson including a board, rash guard, and water shoes. Staff is very friendly and relaxed. (I feel like everyone is Hawaii is very chill). Once the lesson is done, you can continue to surf at a rate of $25 for additional 2-3 hours so worth it. If you have a big party, I would recommend (if possible) to split into smaller groups with multiple instructors. We had a party of 5 and only one can go at a time which means the rest of party is just waiting. As fun as it is just lying on the board, I would rather get more reps under supervision. We had about 3 reps each person before running out of time. I works recommend bringing zinc sunscreen to apply, and plenty of water to drink. Come try if you're in Maui! read more

The group intro lessons are perfect if you just want to experience surfing. If you really want to learn, I recommend going for the private lessons. I signed up for the $85 group intro class on my birthday. I was nervous because I'm not a strong swimmer, but they only take you to water that's chest high. As long as you don't panic when you go under, you can always stand up. The class is 2 hours long. Show up a little early to sign in and to get fitted for your water shoes and rash guard. They have individual bins for you to store your stuff. The first 30 min start on the sand. My teacher, Philippe, was very confident that he could get us all up on our boards in the water using his method. We went through the motions until he thought we were ready to get in the water. This is definitely an upper body workout. If you're not decently fit, you'll be glad for the breaks you get while waiting for your turn to paddle out. In my class, I tried catching a baby wave 5 times. I totally wiped out in the beginning, but Philippe was patient. He kept stressing the steps to me and to go through them slowly. As class went on, I was sure I wouldn't be able to fully ride a wave but I was still okay with it since that meant I got a full refund. Somehow on my last turn though, I actually managed to stand and ride the wave. That was a better feeling than getting the refund would've been. Only sucks that they don't offer any pictures. That would've been a great shot. When class is over, they give you a diploma and a souvenir hat. read more

We had Felipe, who took my 4 year old daughter out for her very first lesson, and had her standing on her second wave. Would 100% highly recommend this surf school among the sea of surf lessons along Front Street! Tori (my apologies if I am spelling your name wrong) was super helpful in getting me set up. He ensures that your waiver is signed, you get a cup of water to hydrate before getting out on the water, and offered a bin to put your belongings in for the duration of the lesson. Philippe was my instructor and I cannot recommend him more! He is focused on proper techniques and corrects your form when practicing on the sand. Follow his steps and you for sure will stand up and ride a wave. Even if you're struggling while trying to catch your wave, he'll be there to help set you up for success. Safety was also a plus here as Philippe instructs you were you need to wait and to be mindful of other surfers when out on the water. Luckily, your ankle is strapped to your board which makes a nice flotation device and you're in waist/chest deep in water by the time you finish catching your wave. Safety is #1 for me and I definitely felt safe being on the water with Goofy Foot. Definitely book your lesson here! read more

My boyfriend and I were vacationing in Maui and decided on a whim that we wanted to take surfing lessons. We checked the different Yelp reviews and decided to try Goofy Foot Surf School after getting a verbal recommendation from someone at a Crossfit gym We got Taylor and he had such a chill and mellow vibe, which really made him the perfect instructor! My boyfriend and I did group lessons and we had two other people with us. We spent about 20 minutes or so on the sand learning the basic of how to stand up on the board and Taylor gave each of us our specific focus points I don't know if our group was just lucky or that skilled but we all were able to catch the wave on our first or second tries! We would paddle out to him one by one and then he would give a little push to help ensure you caught the wave as long as you followed the steps of getting onto the board properly. Taylor seriously had a great vibe that was no pressure and made you feel relaxed, which is what you need to be to look natural while surfing. All four of us in the group were even able to paddle and catch all of our own waves with no assistance! I'm seriously glad I trusted the Yelp reviews and recommendation and you should too. I love this place. I've been here twice - once in July 2019 and again last week (April 2022). I'll admit that I've only taken one other surfing lesson in my life, in Northern California, so I don't have much to compare Goofy Foot to... but I can't think of anything that I wish they did better. They supply all the gear/equipment you need, the instructors are super knowledgeable and hands-on, they go over the basics on the beach before taking you into the ocean, and the 2 hours allotted for group lessons is more than enough time to wear you out. I was able to stand up consistently after my first couple of waves, and even during my first lesson here 3 years ago I was able to stand up after maybe 5 or 6 waves. My instructor even surfed next to me and held my hand to keep me balanced on a few waves before I got the hang of it! I can't say enough good things about the experience and skill of the instructors here. When I came here in 2019, photos were included for free, which is what made me choose Goofy Foot over their competitors. Unfortunately photos now cost $50, but you aren't required to buy them, and I'd still choose Goofy Foot over anywhere else. Goofy Foot Surf School is amazing!!! They were very responsive and communicative leading up to and after our lesson. They even provided a photographer, Gabriel, to capture photos during our lesson if we were interested! His fees were reasonable and we got a ton of great action shots and could just enjoy watching our kids surf. Our 3 kids, ages 10, 13 and 16, had a blast! This was their first time ever surfing and they all got up on their boards numerous times and had such a fun positive experience. Their instructor Kailani was incredible! His enthusiasm and love of the sport is infectious. A brief lesson/intro on land and he had them in the water on their boards. Not a moment was wasted. He even let them stay out a few minutes longer to end on a high note, each catching one last wave. He was very patient and encouraging, especially with my 10 yr old, helping her catch her waves and was by her side the entire time while still giving my 2 older boys his guidance and expertise. I felt they were very safe in his care and the surf location was ideal for beginners. My husband and I couldn't have been more impressed. We highly recommend Goofy Foot Surf School. If you have kids, you can't go wrong. Watching all 3 of our kids having fun and learning a new skill together was by far one of our most memorable and favorite parts of our trip. This is the second time my kids have taken lessons from Goofy Foot Surf School and they had a blast each time. Both times the instructors were awesome. They were energetic, patient, great in teaching kids and fun! Only bad thing was there were a few other surf schools out with a lot of surfers which made for a crowded field and less time hitting waves. They still got plenty of wave time though.
