After three private lessons, our four year old son can now swim independently with no flotation devices :) He was extremely hesitant in the beginning, but with Nia's gentle energy, he kept asking when the next "swim lesson day" was. This is a kid who previously didn't like water over his head in the bath and now he's swimming and grabbing sink toys. Also, Emily has such great customer service, she is prompt with her replies, super friendly/personable and works her hardest to accommodate your schedule! When we got to Makena Landing, Lila was there ready and waiting for us. We had a very informative land lesson where she taught about the importance of reef safe sunscreen and using rash guards/shade, trying to minimize single-use plastic and basic ocean safety. She also went over some of the Hawaiian fish so that if we saw them, we would know what they were. You can feel her LOVE for the ocean. We headed down to the beach where we put on our mermaid tails and lei (I had to bring a few fake lei just for photos--it's MAUI!!) ... She had us take a few photos together and some by ourself. It was so fun and all the other beach-goers were really interested in the 5 mermaids who had "washed up on shore!" We headed out to the water and got busy exploring and learning to use our new tails. It was a little hard at first but she gave us pool noodles, snorkel masks and floaties so that we could get comfortable at our own pace. It didn't take long before we were splashing like real mermaids---because we are! :) It was so fun! The laughter had to have been heard from the beach. Lila had us swim around and she got some fun photos of us as group. We headed back in and got back our land legs. This was such a fun time! It was an exceptional lesson! House is an excellent communicator and focussed on the very specifics I needed to make improvements. I actually spent less little time swimming and more time talking about the mechanics of a good swimming technique. After practicing what House taught me, I was swimming multiple kilometers with a few weeks AND ENJOYING IT! Swimming went from my activity of most anxiety to being my favorite.
