After three private lessons, our four year old son can now swim independently with no flotation devices :) He was extremely hesitant in the beginning, but with Nia's gentle energy, he kept asking when the next "swim lesson day" was. This is a kid who previously didn't like water over his head in the bath and now he's swimming and grabbing sink toys. Also, Emily has such great customer service, she is prompt with her replies, super friendly/personable and works her hardest to accommodate your schedule! Living in Maui, snorkeling is a regular hobby that I can enjoy more often than most but now that I've experienced diving, I don't think snorkeling will ever again suffice. Chris was an incredibly patient, knowledgeable and reassuring instructor who took the time to go over all aspects of not only diving and the world that so few of us get to experience under the sea, he also took time to listen to my fears, answer my plethora of questions and get to know me as a student which was very refreshing. Although I am still in the midst of achieving my PADI open water certification, I can't say enough about the professionalism and true respect for the sport that Instructor Chris has portrayed. I can't wait for my next dive and I am absolutely ecstatic to finally be certified and a "real diver".

One of our children has cerebral palsy, which affects his left side. While he can swim, he's not a strong swimmer, so we were looking for an instructor with experience working with differently abled individuals. Maui Surf Girls School recommended Brent, and we are so grateful they did. Brent was patient, encouraging, and incredibly skilled. He managed to give all three of our kids plenty of attention, while also adapting his instruction to help our son succeed. Thanks to Brent, our son was able to stand up on the surfboard, something we weren't sure would be possible. Seeing that happen was an unforgettable moment for our family. The rest of our vacation was spent listening to our kids ask for more surf lessons, which says everything about the experience they had. I would recommend Brent and Maui True North Surf Lessons without hesitation. If we're ever back in Maui, they will be our first call.

Both of my daughters were up and riding waves much sooner than I expected, and the smiles on their faces said it all. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Maui. His refresher was spot-on -- super clear, super reassuring -- and I felt totally confident before we even got in the water. The conditions were absolutely gorgeous: warm, clear water, and visibility for days. Barry pointed out sea turtles, vibrant reef fish, and so many little underwater gems I would've totally missed on my own. You can tell he knows and loves these waters. My son and I had a wonderful two days diving with Barry over our spring break trip to Maui…read more My son had completed his online training and pool work in California, so we made a reservation with Barry to finish his open water certification with a referral course. We scheduled five dives over two days -- four for the certification and an extra one as a skills refresher. I'm already certified but hadn't been diving in several years, so I was able to joined them on most of the dives. Barry is an outstanding instructor. He's encouraging yet precise -- striking a good balance between demonstrating skills, offering guidance, and ensuring that you're truly mastering the material. Each dive began with required skills (like mask clearing, out-of-air drills, controlled emergency swim ascent, etc...), and then we used the remaining time to explore the beautiful nearby reefs. Over the two days, we saw sea turtles, eels, an octopus, and an amazing variety of fish, both large and small. On our final dive, Barry filmed us using professional gear, and the resulting video turned out great -- a fantastic memory of our first dives together for my son and me. We also really appreciated Barry's flexibility. When my son caught a cold, Barry was happy to reschedule our second dive day to later in the week, which made for a much better and safer experience overall. Highly recommend Barry for anyone looking for a skilled, thoughtful, and safety-conscious dive instructor for a private or small group experience.

Many of the other outfits on Maui will have you diving with a few dozen other people. I didn't really know what to expect when I booked with Maui Dive Connection, and was extremely surprised when I arrived to find out it was just me and one other person booked to dive that day. But that's how Steve operates. He keeps his groups VERY small! Steve ran me through my refresher and then we got busy exploring the area around Mala pier in Lahaina. Sharks, eels, octopus, schools of fish, coral, and an abundance of turtles were all there! Truly some amazing diving! And as a plus, Steve is taking pictures throughout and emails everything to you afterward. Highly recommend skipping the big outfits and hoping Maui Dive Connection is available during the time for which you're looking to dive!

I was at different points during the course, but Jon was great at making me feel more relaxed and helping out when I needed extra support, like going in the water with me at times and giving me so a lot of guidance. I started practicing freediving a few months ago, and wasn't sure if I needed to take a course or could just practice on my own, but I'm SO glad I took this course, because Jon teaches you how to dive way safer and better and you learn rescue techniques. I learned a lot, including things I was previously doing wrong/unsafely, and I left the class with knowing what techniques and skills I need to continue practicing, and which areas I was more confident in. Jonathon was both patient and supportive, giving helpful hints on how to change my SCUBA ways. Given these are not bad ways for a SCUBA diver, but freediving requires separate skills, especially when it comes to equalization and head position. Squeezed in a lesson with Scott at 8 am before my 1 pm flight. I'm so happy that I did. I came…read moretotally unprepared, but was relieved that Scott had everything I needed, long sleeve rash guard and water shoes. He also equipped us with surfboards that were perfect for our height and weight. We started off with a quick simple lesson on shore to teach us the basics and then we went out into the ocean. We couldn't have picked a better beach or a better day to go. The conditions were incredible! Scott's energy was on another level, and got us super pumped up and excited to catch waves. He's a super cool and charismatic dude and really fun to be around. He's very motivating and makes sure you get your moneys worth and catch a ton of waves. Everybody in our group caught 25-30 waves at least! In other lessons, I've never been able to get up on my own, but by the end of this lesson, I was getting up by myself every time!! Thank you to Scott for the best surfing experience I've had in my life, what a great way to end an epic trip to Maui! Will be back soon!
