This was our second visit because our first experience was outstanding. In fact, that's exactly why we decided to come back. Unfortunately, this visit was the complete opposite. We were greeted and seated immediately, but after being seated we waited about 10 minutes without anyone acknowledging us. During that time, multiple servers walked past our table and never once asked if we had been greeted or if anyone had taken care of us. Eventually, a busser wearing a green shirt brought us chips and salsa. He simply said, "Enjoy," in a very dismissive tone and practically tossed the chips and salsa onto the table before walking away. It immediately made us feel like we were an inconvenience rather than valued guests. I asked to speak with a manager, and Tony came over. I explained that two servers had walked past our table without checking on us and that no one had greeted us after we were seated. Tony acknowledged that he had seen us when we were seated and agreed that someone should have greeted us. His explanation was that the staff was busy seating guests. While I appreciate that he apologized and invited us to stay, by that point the experience had already been ruined. I told Tony that our first visit had been amazing, which is exactly why we returned. Sadly, this visit made us feel completely unwelcome. As a same-sex couple, we left with the feeling that we were being treated differently because we are two gay men. I cannot say for certain that this was the reason, but it is genuinely how the entire experience made us feel. No guest should ever leave a restaurant questioning whether they were treated differently because of who they are. We chose to leave without ordering because the welcoming atmosphere we experienced during our first visit simply wasn't there this time. I truly hope management addresses both the lack of attentiveness and the way guests are made to feel. Great food brings people in, but great hospitality is what brings them back. read more

I'm glad we stopped by Maudie's Cafe because it's such an iconic Austin Tex mex place, especially being in the heart of Tarrytown with strong HH options and stronger drinks. We went during Maudie's undergoing renovations so part of the dining room was available, and there was an outdoor covered tent area as well, but while the interior was beautifully done, we were stuck next to the bathrooms and in the high traffic area, so maybe we come back after all this is said and done. Service was good at first, our drinks came out, but then we waited quite some time for our food, and even longer for the check. A bit of a bummer as we wanted to get a little more on the HH menu, but maybe that was for the best as the margs were potent and we had Christmas light shows to watch and get to. Overall, we'd return to this Maudie's, the parking lot is tight, so arrive before the dinner rush, and you'll get some decent food options with very good prices that won't break the bank! read more

Heading up South Lamar on a Sunday morning, looking for breakfast tacos and a coffee. Came up on Maudies and there looked to be a chance to get on this Tex-Mex thing I keep hearing about. Easy parking and self-seating, before you know it chips and salsa are on the table. Can't complain, the chips and salsa were quite nice. I opted for a simple cheese enchilada plate, I think it was the Josie. The food hit the table in 5 -10 min, sizzling hot enchiladas and the beans + rice on a sidecar. I am looking this over and have come to the conclusion the cheese covering the enchiladas is Velveeta or Kraft Singles. I am puzzled. I am sure we all know that is not food but some petrochemical disguised as cheese. I did my best to peel that plastic layer back and get to the enchiladas, then it hits me, is the same fake cheese inside the enchiladas? yikes.... The beans and rice were good. read more

We have catered lunches from this location for work events in the past. There were never any delivery snafus (some of you know how that can be), and working with the catering team to place orders and get them to us at a specific time has been spot on. Oftentimes, when food is catered, it doesn't match up to what you would get if you actually sit down in the restaurant and order. Not the case. The food is as good and as fresh as it is at the restaurant. The taco bar and tamales are usually the go-to catering order for our events and as mentioned, no complaints about the food, its flavor, or quality at all. read more

Maybe it's my fault for being a bit of a spice wimp, but I was kinda sad my shrimp tacos were so spicy I had to eat around the sauce. Otherwise, they had really good flavor, were on their Under 500 Calories side of the menu, and were served with beans. Plenty filling. The skinny marg was surprisingly good too. I wouldn't hesitate to order it again. I always feel like Maudie's is busy, especially around happy hour for their specials. We arrived around 6:30 on a Wednesday and were glad to get a table inside. This was my first time here and I can describe it as the Telmex place you bring your picky parents to. I prefer other establishments but I can't Faulk this place as they are busy and very courteous to their patrons. Chips and dips, trifecta, were not the best but again it is your parents (out of town) version of what Tex mex would be. Drinks were good and they had something for everyone. It seemed like a mix between a Chuy's and perhaps a Don Pablo's but the locals were lined up with to go orders the whole time we were there. This is a place for families and large parties. I sat at the bar and watched the game while I awaited my relleno which I've had better but I compare a business to itself and I found it to be good. So if you want original Tex mex I'd say this isn't it but if you have a large group who has different ideas of Tex mex then this is your place! read more

I live in a spot where I'm equidistant to 4 Maudie locations (traffic dependent). This location is my fave. I know they're expanding and it's temporary but I'm not digging the "taco tent." Maudie's has been a solid Go To for Tex-Mex for decades. Service is always great. Full bar with nice cocktails that are priced well below Austin's routinely outrageous prices. Food is great. I've been a fan of Maudie's for a long time, and the food and service here lived up. Got my standard beef fajitas for one, and they were as great as ever. This place provides good value. It's tasty traditional TexMex and the price point is where it should be for Mexican food. I ordered the Mexican special which started with a crispy beef taco and guacamole salad. Very tasty! Then two cheese enchiladas with chili con carne sauce with onions were served alongside rice and beans. Everything was on point. Ate at Maudies Bee Cave this evening. Have been eating at Maudies for years, and this was the worst service I have ever had. We asked for more chips, and they were not delivered. They never came back and asked for drink refills. When food finally came, I asked for Chalua, and it was never delivered. Ordered a beer when food arrived, and it came after I had finished Mt dinner. I've tried giving Maudie's Café several chances, but the service is consistently awful. Every time I come in, the staff acts like I'm inconveniencing them just by placing an order. Today I ordered to-go, called 10 minutes before the pickup time they gave me, and was told it wasn't ready. When I arrived, there was no one at the counter for about 10 minutes , and when I finally got my food, it was already cold. The quality is nothing special--average at best--and certainly not worth putting up with the rude attitude. Even when dining in, the experience isn't much better. The service feels rushed, unfriendly, and unwelcoming. Also it's absurd you have to pay for chips on it to go order if they're complementary when you dine in. Sadly, there are plenty of other cafés in town that serve better food and treat customers with respect. read more

I had the best experience at Maudie's. Lisa, the manager, was so kind and accommodating. The bar tender, Anna, helped us order the most amazing quesadillas. I had no idea how accommodating the menu is. It's a great place to eat clean or whatever you want. The gluten free options are also outstanding for a texmex restaurant. Highly recommend. This is one of my favorite places to visit when I visit Austin. If you like Mexican food, this is the place to go. I love that they have a diverse menu, and you can get a breakfast taco even at lunchtime, and they also have a full bar. I got excellent service as always, but it felt like the waiter was extra attentive because they were busy, but our waiter kept coming by to make sure we were doing OK. My party got appetizers to share, queso and guacamole. I also appreciate that they bring out salsa and chips as soon as you are seated. This time I got grilled fish tacos and black beans and tequila and the rocks. My husband got a Long Island Ice tea, it was tasty. He was nice and gave me a sip. Another long-time Austin favorite bites the dust, selling out for the almighty tourist dollar. The renovations are terrible. Closing half the indoor dining room to make room for a sports bar-like section makes it very claustrophobic. The tent outside not only takes away parking spaces from an already parking-challenged lot, but it is loud, closed-in and cheesy. They once served the best enchiladas in town, but ours were a gloppy mess. We will not be back. read more

This is the second time Ive been ordered to pickup from Maudie's Cafe, in the Last 2 weeks, and both of my experiences were horrible. The first time, I called 3 times to place an order because the website wasn't giving me an options for how I wanted to customize my meal. Every time I called, I was put on "hold" (I say this in parentheses because I could hear everything they were saying, laughing, talking,ect) and was on hold for at least 5 mins, each time I called(which was 3 times). I then decided to order online and received this MESS of a "Stuffed avocado" and it was a MESS (we added chips to it because it was completely uneatable without it). Today was the SECOND time ordering for pickup, I finally got someone on the phone. I asked SPECIFICALLY for plastic wear for both meals, but the hostess or whoever was taking my order was rushing me and every time I asked something she quickly cut me off. At the checkout/pickup window, the hostess/or whatever, was incredibly rude. When I was picking up my order, I noticed a bee in front of the window and proceeded to warn her. She quickly dismissed what I was saying and ,very unwelcoming and dismissively, asked what my name was for the order. Mind you, on the phone she didn't ask for my name, so I told her she didn't ask for a name and proceeded to tell her my order, she cut me off again and said my name, saying she got my name from the caller ID. At the end of the transaction, I took my items but I felt very shitty. Very much like I didn't belong there l. Most of the costumers were white, even though this was a TexMex restaurant. There was nobody I could relate to or didn't look like me (black, hijabi). Idk if this had anything to do with it or if this place just has shitty service.
