Hip and tasty Italian restaurant at Hotel 71. Staying at the hotel meant we had dinner here twice; once out of convenience and once because venturing elsewhere proved to be a poor dining experience. Between the two dinners, my husband and I tried the broccoli and cheese soup, margherita pizza, bruschetta, lobster paperdelle (seasonal special), veal ravioli and mushroom paperdelle. Delicious!!!!!!!!! We had dinner New Years Eve and loved the entire experience. Started with Carpaccio di Manza and Caprese salad, the Carpaccio was the best we have ever had. Thankfully found this restaurant on Yelp because if you would try to find it on your own, you wouldn't. Tucked inside of Hotel 71, on a very small end of the street, it's amazing to step into. amazing food, amazing service, amazing classic cocktail. my son (a very picky tween) and i both had an awesome time. it's not a kid-friendly place, but a 12-year-old who enjoys debating the finale of "how i met your mother" is not really very kid-ish, so he fit in just fine. nice decor and vibe - felt very relaxing but very upscale, which is tough to pull off. i had the agnellotti and he had the spaghetti and meatballs - both delicious. even my salad - the insalata di rucola e prosciutto di parma -was excellent. got the help i needed with some french-english translation on menu items; our server spoke excellent english. all of the staff were attentive, kind, and polite. we felt welcome, well taken care of, and left happy and full. we actually debated coming back here every night of our trip and will definitely be back! read more

So the place looks great and the service is really friendly and attentive. Felt like everyone was really genuine there. No pretentiousness at all. I had the mushroom pappardelle which was delicious and rich and with a glass of red wine to cut through the richness, made for a perfect meal. It's a pricier place but it's well worth the price for a nice night out. Would absolutely go to this restaurant again. I love places like this where even though it looks elegant and the food is fantastic, the servers are all down to earth and friendly with no attitude. Great place! read more

We started out with Caesar salad. It was "okay". it came out on the dry side. The bread served with olive oil, was stale and not fresh. We then had the pappardelle with mushrooms, which was excellent. And also the pesto salmon which was very below par. They baked a thick layer of pesto on top of the salmon. End result the pesto was dried out, and what was left of it, completely overpowered the delicate taste of the salmon, which was sitting on an oversized portion of pasta. Dined here while on vacation August 20, 2015. After having a very disappointing dinner the night before, at another nearby restaurant. Il Matto erased our memory of that bad experience. The atmosphere is romantic, the food is exemplary and the service is on point. We have recommended this restaurant two friends who will be traveling to Quebec in the future. If you make a reservation at this restaurant, and I do recommend a reservation as they got busy very quickly, you will not be disappointed. read more

Excellent food and great, friendly service. My wife and I arrived without reservation and the place was almost full and very busy. Nevertheless the host offered to seat us if we would be able to finish eating within one hour. That was fine us. Even though it was very busy there was no lack of service. My wife does not eat much, so she was very pleased when the waitress suggested she could have a half sized portion. My pasta with mushrooms was excellent. Never eaten here but had the worst experience already! Congratulation to the person who is taking care of the reservations. We came here during winter -20C cold and try to manage a reservation just because it is located in our hotel otherwise nothing special with the place. We called them before we leave our room to check dinner places, they said we can simply walk in. We even didn't bother to check any other places cause it was too cold outside and it was Christmas week. After 10 min we arrived - Da da the whole place is still empty, we asked for a table and the answer was "No we re booked already". We certainly shocked they even didn't bother to make an explanation. I told to my husband forget about it and order to go - we asked for menu to check and simply order. He told us he can't show menu here we can only go upstairs check menu in the room and call to order into room. Are you guys serious? Congratulation guys you ruin someone's Christmas and birthday week at the same time. WILL BE A GOOD CASE STUDY FOR TERRIBLE RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT! read more

Had a great dinner here. Got the rigatoni arriabata with the sausage, and it was delish although next time I'd nix the sausage which was overcooked and bland. We wanted a special dinner for our last night in Quebec so Il Matto was our destination du jour. We were taking a chance trying to eat at an upscale restaurant with small children however I figured if they were awful, we were leaving the country soon and worst case scenario, my kids bad behavior would have the owners rethink their policy on welcoming children into their restaurant. The host warmly welcomed is and got us seated quickly and gave us a chance to look over the menu. Our server got our drinks going as we settled on a pizza for the kids, which they loved. We also appreciated that the servers divided it onto two plates ahead of time which made sharing so much easier. My enjoyed her pappardelles with mushrooms, thoroughly. My agnelotti was excellent as well. Everyone survived the night and to my knowledge, they still welcome families with kids. It's near the main tourist area but just far enough from the chaos that you feel like you stumbled onto something really special. The food and service was well worth the price and it was a nice way to end our stay in Quebec. read more

Good food and nice room ruined by a clueless and rude waitress. We needed some more info about a bottle on the wine list; the best she could do is point out that " it is a red wine". Holy Batman thanks for the tip! Luckily we were bailed out by a waiter that knew what was going on and answered our wine question. After that the service bordered between surly and non existent. This was our second trip to Quebec and we hand another great meal here. Between our two visits, we have tried the funghi pizza, ravioli and spaghetti. All were good. There's a nice selection of wines and cocktails to choose from as well. The atmosphere is hip and noisy. As such, it is packed right up until 10:00 pm or later. The bar and wait staff aren't that great. They are busy and clearly looking to get people in/out. Not much attention to detail or service. read more

We went to Matto for our last night in Quebec City and it really was a wonderful end to our trip to this beautiful city. Everything from the decor to the ambience, from the attentive staff to the absolutely amazing food, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Everything on the menu was appealing but we opted for the calamari and bruschetta as our appetizers and the spaghetti carbonara and pappardelles with mushrooms. Everything was perfectly cooked and perfectly portioned but, we nonetheless topped our meal off with the bomba dessert (a little too sweet but pretty amazing). We had two alcoholic drinks each, and one of the best things was the the price of everything. All in all, we loved our evening at Matto and would love to go back the next tim we're in Quebec City. read more

The food was excellent, but we waited nearly an hour for our meals. Other than that, the quality of service was great and the food tasted absolutely divine. Other than Panache (which is fine dining and not really comparable), this was the best meal we had in QC, hands down. It's a hip, sleek Italian place, and the food is authentic, high-quality, and delicious. The flavors are just slightly different than what we were used to (kind of like eating Chinese food in India, it won't be like Chinese food in the US), but it's traditional Italian. I had the arugula salad with parmesan, which had a delicious lemony dressing- I ate every bite, and I'm not a big salad eater. I had the bolognese, which was delicious, and hubby had the penne with sausage, which was also excellent. My only complaint is that the music is rather loud, too loud for comfort, really- we almost walked out after opening the door and hearing the music. But I'm glad we didn't because the food was so good. Then around 9:30 or 10 (it was a late dinner for us), they turn down the lights, turn UP the music, and change the music to club music. We specifically didn't order dessert just so we could escape the loud music. I'm not an old lady by any means, and I thought the music was a bit much- I'm not a fan of loud music, especially club music, when I'm trying to eat out and converse with my husband. We would have stayed and ordered dessert, but the restaurant lost out on that revenue due to the noise. Matto, you don't need to create a buzz by having the music so loud- your food speaks for itself! So, go early and enjoy some of the best food in QC. Just escape before it turns into a late-night scene. read more

So..In QC for a few days and stumbled upon Matto for lunch..(Toast doesn't open until 6). Sat at the bar, nice atmosphere, loved the tall 6 top adjacent to it. It took them a few minutes to get to us to place our order but drinks were delivered promptly. Te server was helpful and personable and translated whatever we didn't understand on the menu. The descriptions were fairly accurate but not exactly. Caprese salad was mediocre but the risotto appetizer was superb. A nice touch was the surprise of a roasted scallop on top of each mound. What was described as a meat stew over spaghetti was really a bolognese sauce with capers and black olives, beef and pieces of sausage. An excellent choice I must say. The spinach and ricotta ravioli in gorgonzola sauce was delicate and light and the cheese in the ravioli was very fresh. The addition of chopped scallion on top brought out a bright freshness in the dish. An espresso to finish the meal and we were done. Sorry to say, the bread was lacking in flavor and texture more befitting of a lesser establishment. The toast was hard as a rock, flavorless. If it was meant to be a crostini it didn't fit the bill. But, would recommend this restaurant again. read more
