This place had been on my list for quite some time, as it always makes the "Top pizzas in Baltimore" lists. Well listen, Matthews lived up to the hype!!! Pre ordered for a time about an hour out, and when I arrived (at the exact time), the pizzas had literally just come out! Timing was perfect!! How could I go to Matthews and not try the crab pie...it seemed un-Baltimore like. So I did. And it was amazing!!! They absolutely do not skimp on the crab!! I don't understand how this place is popular. I've tried the pizza a handful of times over the past 3 years and all have been disgusting.

A truly perfect pizza. I've been wanting to try Matthew's for a while now and I'm so glad I finally did. Perfect crust, perfect amount of cheese, and perfect amount of sauce! I was nervous about the Fra Diavalo because I've never had Thai Chili Sauce on pizza before, but I will be ordering it again. It was the perfect amount of spicy (a kick but not overwhelming) and very flavorful. I also tried the Spinach Pie and added mushrooms. It had a garlic butter kind of flavor to it which I loved. When we went it was not as busy as I thought it would be. We were able to sit right away but it took a while for someone to take our order. Someone had recommended the Spinach salad to us which was delicious! We had also ordered a pepperoni pizza with sausage and the 3 cheese white pizza. Both pizza lacked flavor and wasn't the best. I had this bookmarked for years and never made it here. I finally made it here and it was okay. Not 5 star great but good. Service was fast and friendly. Once, when I was craving meatballs, I found myself searching through Instagram tags #meatbals to figure out a new recipe to help appease the tummy-but instead of a "make it yourself idea" I found Matthew's Pizza meatball sub...I was salivating over the photos- added it to my 'must-eats'-& tried to find time to travel up to the area. Finally coordinating a trip, we ordered the meatball sub & could not resist adding on a crab pizza. The sub matched my dream hoagie goal. The hoagie structure was perfect: A well-toasted crispy, flaky bun-with not too much sauce- just enough to create a soggy moistness inside-among the cheesy cheesy cheesy layers. The meatballs themselves were massive- delicious, authentic Italian meatballs-moist, juicy, hearty well-flavored- half a hoagie felt like a large hoagie! Absolutely delicious, crave-worthy. The pizza came in a true homemade-homecooked prepared packaging-just two plates tapped together wrapped in paper- this gave off a 'oh this is going to be good-authentic feeling' before the first bite... And then again, the food lived up to the hype. A deep dish style pizza, stuffed with crab meat & caramelized onions, with charred cheese on top & a buttery flaky overall crisp taste. I've been going here for over 40 years. It's a shame that I'm just now reviewing it. Pizza is one of those things where people will argue about a specialty of a region or individual components but there is no arguing that Matthew's is absolutely amazing. I always go for the traditional or the four-cheese as it's the best indicator of a quality pizza. The pies are individual size, although you could split one and a salad and it would be a great meal. The crust is crispy with a slightly sweet tomato sauce. For to-go orders, the pizza is served between two paper plates which makes it easy to share. If dining in, the dining room hasn't changed in the 40 years I've been going there. It brings back memories of my childhood. The waitresses are always friendly and more than willing to help with any suggestions. Do yourself a favor and grab a Matthew's Pizza. You'll love it. read more

We ordered 3 pizzas for take out. They put so little sauce it was so dry and not like pizza at all. The crust is more like bread than pizza and they put next to no sauce on all of the pizzas. A really bad experience and the cheese was not very good, kind of dried out probably because the sauce was missing. Really disappointing pizza experience and I really do not understand the good reviews. We got a stuffed pizza which is totally just two pizzas stacked together and without sauce was really dry and bland tasting. Really not sure why this place had such good ratings. I did an order for pickup on two small pizzas so we could try two flavors and relax at home. As you've seen in other reviews, they don't have pizza boxes so they put it on a paper plate and wrap it with like white butcher paper and put it in a plastic bag which cause it to sweat and the crust was soggy by the time we got home. Now to their credit, the kid (yes, kid) working at the counter (who didn't greet me for five minutes) warned of it getting mushy but it's like ok... then get pizza boxes!! Anyway... the chicken pizza was uberrrr lame. The white pizza essentially had no white. Flavorless. The meat pizza was ok... 5/10. Would never get this again. This little hole in the wall has amazing pizza. My friend recommended this place and I would definitely return. We shared a garden salad and meatball sliders on pair buns to start. The garden salad could feed more than 2 people. They have a glider dressing which I'd once pull and vinegar and lots of parmesan cheese. The slider came in 4s. Then we each had a pizza, 3 cheese and everything. The pizzas were deep dish style and the crust was to die for! Perfectly crispy. Matthew's Pizza is a neighborhood favorite, but I would come here even if I wasn't from around the area. The place is a quiant store front with about 10 tables fitted for parties of 4. There's something very unassuming and humble here, and makes me instantly feel comfortable and welcomed. Their menu has a variety of items besides pizza, but I have yet to try them since Im obsessed with their pizza. SOOO... They're originally thick crust, 8" or 10" inch, pan pizzas. You can request thin crust, but I'm a Matthew's traditionalist at heart. I've tried about 3-5 types of their pizza and was never disappointed. Their most popular is their crab pizza, and the portion of crab is unheard of and so satisfying. Also, people love this place. Not to be dramatic or anything, but I finally tried the holy grail crab pie from Matthew's Pizza and it has changed my life. While I'm not much of a pizza person, I've found myself salivating over photos of Matthew's and realized it was time to swing by for a try. Phoned my order in and stopped by 20 minutes later for pick up. The entire ride home was, quite frankly, torturous. The pizza doesn't come in a box, so the smells permeated easily and openly throughout the car. Arrived home and ripped open the packaging to see a beauty before me. The pizza is deep dish style with crab meat covering damn near every inch of it. Every bite was soft, cheesy and full of crab and onion. As I ate through the slices, it became very evident why Matthew's has been a staple here for years and years. I think the cost of the pie is more than fair, given the amount of crab, but would love to see larger option sizes on the menu some day. This unique pie ran me $20 and some change. It was cooked in a deep dish cast iron skillet and came with some top notch customer service. Matthew's is pizza heaven!! The crab pizza has SO MUCH crab. There is crab in every bite and it is perfectly seasoned with old bay. The everything pizza is literally everything you could ask for. The ingredients are super fresh down to the anchovies which, I usually always ask to sub out but, here they really compliment the dish! Overall, the pizzas have a medium thickness crust that's fluffy AND crispy. The actual pizza itself is not greasy at all either. The staff are so friendly and you get real homie/family vibes when you dine in. To top it all off the prices are beyond reasonable. I honestly didn't notice much of a difference in cost between regular chain restaurants and this is obviously 1000x a better experience and tastier. read more

Had their crab pie and chicken wings- Not worth the hype! Found hair in crab pie- disgusting! Food: The crab pie is okay. I was expecting the taste to be more like a crab cake but it was bland. It's just crab, cheese on a thin spongy bread base. Their chicken wings were extremely salty and my friend couldn't eat it. The portion is enough for two people. There was hair in the crab pie abs I felt like throwing up. Ambience: The restaurant was empty. Chairs/tables were seated far. I'm not sure if this is how their set up has always been or if they took some measures because of Covid. Service: We did a carry out. The wait was 35-40 mins . When I went to pick up the order, the older lady at the counter told me very arrogantly that my order was not ready and if I didn't know about their wait time. I told her that I ordered more than an hour back and showed her the call record time on my phone. She didn't reply to me but was murmuring to a young boy about my order and then she went inside. I waited there like an idiot until I saw a younger lady come out and I asked her if my order was ready. She immediately told me that my order was right there on the counter. I have no idea from when my order was sitting there on the counter. Price: Paid about $30 with taxes and tips. Didn't want to tip them at all for their behavior but it's pandemic and I understand how these family owned restaurants are struggling to survive in these tough times. So I'm originally from CT and for the last 7 years of living in Baltimore, I've had subpar pizza, at best! Matthew's changed that for me today! My husband and I dined in today for the first time and boy are we happy to have found this place. Thanks to a food page on IG, this place most certainly didn't disappoint! We kept it simple and had the double cheese (which is a mix of mozzarella and their hand grated reggiano cheeses) with pepperoni! We were starving when we came in so we were anxious to eat! The pizza was amazing! The crust was nice and crispy, it was hot and the cheese was ooey gooeyyy! So delicious! The service was great as well! We were greeted warmly upon entering and just had a pleasant experience! My husband and I shared a 10 inch pie and it was more than enough for the both of us! We are loaded and bloated right now, in a good way! I almost took a crab pizza to go but my husband told me not to so next time, I'll be ordering that! It looks amazing! My first Matthew's experience. My family has been here before. We did a 10" pizza - half was Traditional and half was Veggie. I only wish it was 20"! Great pizza. We made it a picnic with the grandkids at Patterson Park. What better way to enjoy Baltimore than to have Matthews pizza at Patterson! Unfortunately, Matthew's seems to have really gone downhill fast. Once one of our go-to's, it really isn't worth the price tag of $25 per pizza. I tried to call ahead of time to put in an order - no dice, no one would pick up the phone and I could see why - there was only one poor woman at the front! When the pizza finally came, the sausage on the pizza that was once thick and full of delicious fennel was so thin and tasteless I thought it might be pepperoni! Looks like the greed got to Matthew's and I feel bad for their staff. I personally won't be ordering again - there's plenty of good pizza in Baltimore - but it didn't look like they were hurting for business so I don't expect anything to change. The walls and menu are littered with their raving reviews and the pizza certainly holds up to that. We ordered the house salad and 3 cheese pizza. The salad was standard with the white romaine lettuce and a few (sparse) other vegetables. The house dressing is loaded with cheese. The pizza was gooey and delicious. There's great sauce and cheese action involved on this platter. The dough was thin in parts and thus you could take a few mouthfuls of just the toppings. That's fine by me but it's preferable to have the crust remain throughout every bite. I want to know exactly what I'm going to eat is consistently awesome throughout. Otherwise, the food is mouth watering and worth venturing over to. Loved that they asked if I wanted a straw or not. I'm glad to see they are getting behind that. Regrettably, I don't feel the same way. My hubby and I shared the crab pie and everything pizza. The crab pie tasted exactly like a crab cake with crust on bottom. The everything pizza had a medley of toppings, of which anchovies and beef pepperoni were most unique and not often encountered in pizzas. Surrounded by articles from NYT and Baltimore praising Matthew's Pizza, I'm questioning my taste buds as I found it below average. This is a pan crust pizza and comparable to BJs just at a higher cost. I've lived in the area for a few years and have always heard people rave about "the best pizza in Baltimore." We decided to stop by for dinner yesterday. I gave three stars just for their customer service and the fact that the pizza reheats well. I warmed our left overs for my nephews. The pizza wasn't great. My friend compared it to Cici's but i think it's more like a Pizza Hut pan pizza with less greasy crust. We ordered the Both cheese pizza and an order of fries. The pizza was good. Great or the best, no. I liked the cheese.. it was super cheesy and the crust was great (pan crust).
