The mozzerela stick was good! Nice crust and cheese. The caprese was good!! Like very good. The ingredients were fresh and they were a good size! The pizza was very enjoyable! The crust and bread is cooked PERFECTLY. Every bite has a beautiful texture. The bottom and edge are well done too. This really elevates the experience- the pizza itself isn't overly flavorful. It's a simple pizza flavor that you can tell was made with love. The combination of the perfect bread and the cohesive flavor makes this pizza a true joy to eat despite not being novel in taste. The margarita pie was good and the Thai pie was good too (the Thai pie was spicier but well flavored) I would definitely come here again- the pizza is so easy to eat and has a great crunch in the crust. I think it's the best crust I had on a pizza!
I was looking for some pizza and happened upon this restaurant. I noticed that it had been in business since 1943, so I figured it would be good. I decided on the bbq chicken pizza. It was a 10" pie and there was a sign saying it would take about 25 minutes to make. When the pizza came out, it looked like a deep dish pizza, and was served piping hot. The flavor of the pizza was good, but the burnt crust was a little offputting. The other pizzas I saw served to other customers also had really burnt edges. I've had deep dish pizza and thin crust pizza, and this fell somewhere in between. The staff was super nice and attentive. I just wish the edges of the pizza weren't so burnt tasting.
Solid pizza place in Baltimore! I got a takeout of the spinach pie- it was ready fast within 15- 20 minutes! The service is good and everyone is friendly! Overall I enjoyed the pizza! the crust is great and so is the pie! It was easy to park by the place and pick it up.
Ordered carryout from Matthew's for my first time and it was definitely a fun, delicious experience. The packaging made it a tad hard to carry everything and I was walking back to my friend's so it was tricky. The salad was a large portion for the price and very refreshing. The dressing was a little oily, but not a huge deal. The mozzarella sticks were breaded nicely and very crispy-- paired well with the marinara sauce. The onion rings were great, but there were a lot of little half pieces that were stuck together with the breading and it just became too greasy for those bites. The Margherita pizza was my favorite. I liked the added basil and tomatoes. The great white with veggies was also incredible-- it was packed full of veggies, which added different crunch and umami flavors. The thai chicken was good but I think it needed more onion or the sweet chili sauce or even an addition of chicken. It was just lacking a little for me. I will say that all the pizzas were superrrrr cheesy and had very crispy edges, which I love. A little pricey for the portion sizes overall but it's a fun variation of some classic pizza flavors and a nice neighborhood spot. **Apologies for the pizzas being half eaten in the pictures-- we were starving**
Super cute maybe even a lil retro vibe pizza place! Definitely a B'more local staple! Service was great! Friendly, patient, and great recommendations! Good food for the price!
Matthews is a Baltimore staple for good reason. The aroma of delicious, homemade sauce greets you as soon as you walk in and the atmosphere proclaims "We've been here a few decades, come on in and make yourself at home". The vibe inside is fun, casual and classic feeling. I am a huge fan of the Both Cheese Pie and the Roman Pie but honestly all of their pies are really good. Their crust is crisp, almost fried, and the cheese is fresh and sauce is so flavorful. I'm getting hungry just taking about it.

On the way back from a road trip I planned to try Matthew's after hearing about the crab pie. So I ordered the crab pie and the crab bruschetta. I was highly surprised that the bruschetta was so delicious only needed a few more bruschetta slices to scoop up the remaining crab bruschetta filling. It was a lot left after the bread was done. So the crab piece was not as great as I imagined. Lacked flavor and/or sauce. A bit dry and overcooked. Definitely expensive for the size and taste.
I know this place has been noted as some of the best pizza in the city! I just wasn't fan of the crab pie. Too many onions, and there wasn't a sauce to help bring out the flavors (like an Alfredo or another creamy white sauce). It is a small pizza shop, but they have a dedicated area for "adults only," which was nice as there were families dining and some crying babies. Service was solid, although the pizza took quite some time to come out. We got an order of fries to snack on while we waited and the fries were delicious. I don't know if they were hand-cut, but they had a classic taste. I would come back again to try something else to try a classic pizza and see if that one does the trick.

In my recent visit to Baltimore I have been told by my friends that Mathew's 3 cheese pizza is a must try.. Initially I thought they're over exaggerating as 3 cheese pizza is quite common in every pizza places..But when I tried it I got the difference , it basically made of hand grated mozzarella & imported reggianito & ricotta cheeses.Ricotta cheese in pizza is something new for me and I absolutely loved it now while writing thus review am craving for it and trying to find a place in Scottsdale.. read more
This place had been on my list for quite some time, as it always makes the "Top pizzas in Baltimore" lists. Well listen, Matthews lived up to the hype!!! Pre ordered for a time about an hour out, and when I arrived (at the exact time), the pizzas had literally just come out! Timing was perfect!! How could I go to Matthews and not try the crab pie...it seemed un-Baltimore like. So I did. And it was amazing!!! They absolutely do not skimp on the crab!! Onions were a perfect complement, and the old bay dusting was the icing. Awesome pie. Also tried the both cheese pizza, and got half of that with pepperoni. So much goodness in pizza form. After my experience with my wife at Matthew's, I wonder why I have tried so many pies and not bothered to think of going to Matthew's. By far, the best pizza that I have had in Baltimore. The crab pizza was worth it; many reviewers, bloggers, and vloggers spoke the words coming out of my mouth. The pizza is thick, but it tastes so light, and I look forward to the crunch of the crust with every bite. I liken it to Detroit-style/ Pizza Hut pan pizza. Matthew's uses just the right amount of crab and melds with onion and Old Bay flavors. Some establishments like to be heavy-handed with Old Bay, but Matthews has just the right amount to add enough flavor to meld together. The Margherita is always a standard for me. I love the flavors of basil and ripe tomatoes, but some establishments' Margherita comes out skimpy. Matthew's version was tasty and, like the crab, allowed the flavors to meld. Like anything in Baltimore, Matthew's is nothing fancy, but it has character, and you keep wanting to return for more. read more
A truly perfect pizza. I've been wanting to try Matthew's for a while now and I'm so glad I finally did. Perfect crust, perfect amount of cheese, and perfect amount of sauce! I was nervous about the Fra Diavalo because I've never had Thai Chili Sauce on pizza before, but I will be ordering it again. It was the perfect amount of spicy (a kick but not overwhelming) and very flavorful. I also tried the Spinach Pie and added mushrooms. It had a garlic butter kind of flavor to it which I loved. Of course, that was delicious as well. I'm a picky pizza eater, but I've found the spot for me. Matthews, you've won my heart. read more

So I've finally made it over to see what the hype was about on Matthew's pizza & I must say it was worth the hike. I lucked up & found a parking spot right out front so that experience wasn't my usual adventure. When I went in it wasn't crowded so i was able to be seated & order rather quickly. My server Grace was awesome very nice & constantly making sure I'm good on refills or anything I needed. I elected to go with the boneless chicken wings for an appetizer. Which is the only reason this experience wasn't 5 stars. They didn't come out until right before the pizza did which is a huge turn off when ordering appetizers. But they were pretty good but the star of the show was the crab pie. A nice personal pan pizza loaded with crab meat that you can taste in every bite for only $18. When I say it was worth the hype which is rare cause I find myself often disappointed when I actually get to try out places that foodies have hyped up. But amazingly Matthew's didn't let me down & will always have a customer with me whenever I'm in the neighborhood. Best part was my entire meal was only $31 that's the crab pizza, boneless wings, & drink with free refills. read more

Once, when I was craving meatballs, I found myself searching through Instagram tags #meatbals to figure out a new recipe to help appease the tummy-but instead of a "make it yourself idea" I found Matthew's Pizza meatball sub...I was salivating over the photos- added it to my 'must-eats'-& tried to find time to travel up to the area. Finally coordinating a trip, we ordered the meatball sub & could not resist adding on a crab pizza. The sub matched my dream hoagie goal. The hoagie structure was perfect: A well-toasted crispy, flaky bun-with not too much sauce- just enough to create a soggy moistness inside-among the cheesy cheesy cheesy layers. The meatballs themselves were massive- delicious, authentic Italian meatballs-moist, juicy, hearty well-flavored- half a hoagie felt like a large hoagie! Absolutely delicious, crave-worthy. The pizza came in a true homemade-homecooked prepared packaging-just two plates tapped together wrapped in paper- this gave off a 'oh this is going to be good-authentic feeling' before the first bite... And then again, the food lived up to the hype. A deep dish style pizza, stuffed with crab meat & caramelized onions, with charred cheese on top & a buttery flaky overall crisp taste. Hearty, and while it is pricey ($18 for a 10' pie), the amount of crab made it worth trying ourselves. Would definitely return! Worth drooling over. read more

Ambiance: Walked in and was seated right away during lunch time. Lots of awards and cool news articles/art on the walls. Cute and retro diner vibe with a unique colorful image painted onto each table. Street parking only. (3/5) Food: Ordered the Crab Pie (market price) and Thai Pie, both of which were recommended by the server. The food came out in about 15-20 minutes. The specialty pizzas are 10 inches each and an interesting combination between deep dish and NY style. The Thai Pie had a nice kick from the thai chili sauce but I felt the cheese and crust were a little too greasy. The Crab Pie was a white sauce pizza and tasted like a big cheesy crab cake. When we went it was not as busy as I thought it would be. We were able to sit right away but it took a while for someone to take our order. Someone had recommended the Spinach salad to us which was delicious! We had also ordered a pepperoni pizza with sausage and the 3 cheese white pizza. Both pizza lacked flavor and wasn't the best. The pepperoni was a little overcooked and the cheese pizza was dry.They are known for their crab pizza, so we probably should have tried that. read more

Really not sure why this place had such good ratings. I did an order for pickup on two small pizzas so we could try two flavors and relax at home. As you've seen in other reviews, they don't have pizza boxes so they put it on a paper plate and wrap it with like white butcher paper and put it in a plastic bag which cause it to sweat and the crust was soggy by the time we got home. Now to their credit, the kid (yes, kid) working at the counter (who didn't greet me for five minutes) warned of it getting mushy but it's like ok... then get pizza boxes!! Anyway... the chicken pizza was uberrrr lame. The white pizza essentially had no white. Flavorless. The meat pizza was ok... 5/10. Would never get this again. For someone who doesn't get pizza often, it's kinda a treat, I was super disappointed to waste it on this. read more

This little hole in the wall has amazing pizza. My friend recommended this place and I would definitely return. We shared a garden salad and meatball sliders on pair buns to start. The garden salad could feed more than 2 people. They have a glider dressing which I'd once pull and vinegar and lots of parmesan cheese. The slider came in 4s. Then we each had a pizza, 3 cheese and everything. The pizzas were deep dish style and the crust was to die for! Perfectly crispy. There's not a lot of seating but they do carryout orders as well. read more

The crab pizza is a must try! I ordered mine without onions and it was about a 30 minute wait. But, when the wait was over my entire body was ready! Yep! I ate this pizza in the car right outside Matthew's. Why wait. So so soooooo good, cheesy, and crabby! Do yourself a favor and visit this establishment that has been around since 1942. Crab on Pizza? Add a lil Old Bay and Parigiano-Reggiano cheese and it might work!! Well at Matthew's Pizzeria on 3131 Eastern Ave Baltimore MD, you will be able to find one. This unique pie ran me $20 and some change. It was cooked in a deep dish cast iron skillet and came with some top notch customer service. With nothing else to compare this pie to...it was just...good (the crust was delicious). I would go back to get this pie if I was in the area and I was in the mood for it ( I'm always in the mood for pizza ). The second pie pictured was a lackluster pizza with obvious canned toppings on it. Whew that vinegar smell was sooo strong I had to "back up off of it and sit that 'ish down"!! Matthew's is pizza heaven!! The crab pizza has SO MUCH crab. There is crab in every bite and it is perfectly seasoned with old bay. The everything pizza is literally everything you could ask for. The ingredients are super fresh down to the anchovies which, I usually always ask to sub out but, here they really compliment the dish! Overall, the pizzas have a medium thickness crust that's fluffy AND crispy. The actual pizza itself is not greasy at all either. The staff are so friendly and you get real homie/family vibes when you dine in. To top it all off the prices are beyond reasonable. I honestly didn't notice much of a difference in cost between regular chain restaurants and this is obviously 1000x a better experience and tastier. read more

Undoubtedly one of the best restaurants of Baltimore! Worth every penny and time you spend here. The 3 cheese pizza had a wonderful ricotta cheese inside that I never had before. It added so much flavor to the whole pizza. I am definitely going back to try rest of their pizzas. The tomato, mozzarella salad was almost 'fresh from farm'! Can wait to go back for more. read more

Had their crab pie and chicken wings- Not worth the hype! Found hair in crab pie- disgusting! Food: The crab pie is okay. I was expecting the taste to be more like a crab cake but it was bland. It's just crab, cheese on a thin spongy bread base. Their chicken wings were extremely salty and my friend couldn't eat it. The portion is enough for two people. There was hair in the crab pie abs I felt like throwing up. Ambience: The restaurant was empty. Chairs/tables were seated far. I'm not sure if this is how their set up has always been or if they took some measures because of Covid. Service: We did a carry out. The wait was 35-40 mins . When I went to pick up the order, the older lady at the counter told me very arrogantly that my order was not ready and if I didn't know about their wait time. I told her that I ordered more than an hour back and showed her the call record time on my phone. She didn't reply to me but was murmuring to a young boy about my order and then she went inside. I waited there like an idiot until I saw a younger lady come out and I asked her if my order was ready. She immediately told me that my order was right there on the counter. I have no idea from when my order was sitting there on the counter. Price: Paid about $30 with taxes and tips. Didn't want to tip them at all for their behavior but it's pandemic and I understand how these family owned restaurants are struggling to survive in these tough times. I think the crab pie was $20 and the chicken wings were $7. This was my first time here and I'm not going back again. read more
I finally made it to Matthew's Pizza to try the infamous "Crab Pizza"! I called in my order and the lady who picked up the phone was very friendly and helpful. By the time I got to the restaurant, my order was ready and waiting for me so I was in and out. Once I got home, I couldn't wait to finally try what so many say is the best pizza in Baltimore. Soon as I took the first bite I knew the hype was justified. It was very good! I can't wait to go back and try some different pies that they offer. read more
So I'm originally from CT and for the last 7 years of living in Baltimore, I've had subpar pizza, at best! Matthew's changed that for me today! My husband and I dined in today for the first time and boy are we happy to have found this place. Thanks to a food page on IG, this place most certainly didn't disappoint! We kept it simple and had the double cheese (which is a mix of mozzarella and their hand grated reggiano cheeses) with pepperoni! We were starving when we came in so we were anxious to eat! The pizza was amazing! The crust was nice and crispy, it was hot and the cheese was ooey gooeyyy! So delicious! The service was great as well! We were greeted warmly upon entering and just had a pleasant experience! My husband and I shared a 10 inch pie and it was more than enough for the both of us! We are loaded and bloated right now, in a good way! I almost took a crab pizza to go but my husband told me not to so next time, I'll be ordering that! It looks amazing! Give this place a try if you're in the area! You won't be disappointed and this spot has been added to our regulars! We'll see you guys again soon with friends!!! read more

My first Matthew's experience. My family has been here before. We did a 10" pizza - half was Traditional and half was Veggie. I only wish it was 20"! Great pizza. We made it a picnic with the grandkids at Patterson Park. What better way to enjoy Baltimore than to have Matthews pizza at Patterson! Only had opportunity for one picture as all other slices were devoured. read more
This is a really cute place that has amazing pan pizza, and friendly service. They are now open for carry out, delivery and dine in. I got their crab pie, that has lumps of crab meat, onions and cheese. What I love most about this pizza is the crust. It is thick, buttery, crispy on the outside and soft in the center. I'm already thinking about going there again to get another pizza! read more
