Can't goto Sunday River without going to the Matterhorn. The ambiance is great! Your typical ski bar, makes you feel like you're in Utah or Colorado. We sat upstairs, our server was nice. I ordered the Carnivore pizza light sauce, extra cheese. It was ok. It definitely didn't have extra cheese on it and the toppings could have more. My son ordered a pepperoni the same way, and he had way more cheese, but not light sauce. My wife ordered the chicken pesto sandwich and she thought it was good. While the food was decent, and the staff friendly....its not what it used to be. Closes early and when you're use to epic cover bands (years and years) only to find the stage is storage and the "band" is ...well 2 people playing somber covers on a cello...its a major disappointment . Asked staff if it was an off night but told it's the new normal.... Writing this at 10:41 on a saturday and there is no place open and trying to get a last drink here was not worth it . If you're looking for a fun spot with a vibe and fun music to spend the night with friends....may want to book a different mountain. Bring back the old Matterhorn!!! read more

We just had an early dinner at this restaurant. This was our second time at the Matterhorn, the first being take out. We had ordered the Matterhorn steak tips and the balsamic salmon. Both meals tasted great, the beef was non stringy, well cooked as I desired with a nice bourbon style sauce, seasoned mashed potatoes and a couple of vegetable varieties. The salmon was also delicious which my wife had but the bite she gave me was also very appetizing. I am fairly opinionated about food and an establishment's atmosphere. I was not expecting the Waldorf hotel restaurant so the decor and general ambiance was very fitting to the ski area (aka Matterhorn restaurant). I thoroughly enjoyed all the ski memorabilia and decorative metal pieces. Will come again! read more

My boyfriend and I were looking for dinner last night. This is our first time at Sunday River and we're unsure of where to go. This was a terrific option. It was busy as one of the few options. The wait staff were pleasant, prompt, efficient and friendly. We had a small wait which we did at the bar. They have a large selection of beers & wines, and we enjoyed our choices. It is a classic tavern so the menu is aligned with that identity. We had the artichoke and spinach dip , which was warm & very tasty; we enjoyed that a lot. My boyfriend had the fish & chips; it was delish and the portion was enormous. I had a bison burger cooked to order and I enjoyed it very much. On the whole, it was a pleasant time. Ski season without Matterhorn Ski Bar is like winter without snow-- it just wouldn't make any sense! So thankful for the amazing staff of this bar that make you feel like family when you enter. Although Covid has certainly changed the way the bar operates a bit, it is clear that the owner and his staff took great care in making those that enter the establishment feel as safe as possible-- socially distanced tables, partitions between bar seats, etc. One of the amazing things about Matterhorn is that you can be a regular or a person visiting while on vacation, and no matter what, you'll always receive excellent service. My fiancé and I celebrated a belated Valentine's Day and found ourselves at the Matterhorn for the afternoon. Great drink selection with plenty of local beers to choose from in addition to some really tasty food. We only tried the pretzel appetizer as we had dinner reservations elsewhere but I definitely contemplated ordering a second plate. When we asked about beer recommendations we were met with great excitement and talked about several different beer offerings-- we in no way felt like we were being bothersome which can be the case sometimes when you ask for recommendations. Long story short-- you don't have to only visit the Matterhorn after a day of skiing! It's a great place to go if you're just looking to enjoy a drink, appetizer and even play a game of cribbage. Was approached by owner (self declared) advising us that there is a 2 hour "sitting limit" on busy nights at his restaurant. He also advised there was a two hour wait that night. Then proceeded to tell us if we were to come back that they couldn't allow us to stay at a table for that long. As bad as I felt for staying at the table for 3 hours (7 people) and spending over $400, I eventually realized that there was no merit to the owners concern when tables around us were not being filled as they emptied. I'm not sure what' caused us to be the target of impeding his profits, but his lack of professionalism by directly confronting us was not well-received and we will not be back. The Matterhorn Ski Bar was an awesome place to hang out after a long fun day of skiing. We stopped in at around 4pm on a Saturday and the place was just moderately busy. The tap options were pretty good, and they had Maine Beer Lunch in bottles. The decor is very cool - I heard that they have over 500 pairs of retired skis under the bar's epoxy. We ordered the garlic knots - solid choice. From the bartender to the waitress who served us over by Big Buck Hunter, everyone was very friendly and patient. I never felt pressured or rushed. They are known for their mug club, which is actually a great part of their decor. Over 1000 mugs are hanging around the bar. Really cool look. Looking forward to returning! read more

First night in town we decided to pop in here for a quick bite. My expectations weren't all that high considering it's one of the few restaurants in town. It was as expected, the service was good, our waitress was nice, polite, quick and cute. The food however left a bit to be desired. We started with the wings and nachos neither were greats- the "mountain of wings" was more like a rolling hill- I think 10 skinny wings. The nachos were abundant but lacked topping and the provided side dips weren't all that much either. I had the buffalo mac and cheese and it was okay, creamy but overly smothered in bacon and herbs, don't get me wrong I love bacon but it was a lot, I felt almost sick halfway through. The pizzas were okay, a bit bland and the chicken pot pie was pretty good. List of beers is good and long, definitely come here if you want a drink and some snacks but don't expect much for dinner- I'm sure it would have been slightly better after a long day of skiing or hiking. read more

BLUE!!!! Yes, my favorite drink here is their BLUE drink. It's official name is the Shock Wave which I learned by the end of the season and is served in a giant bowl. On that note, you may or may not like this place for one reason... The Crowd. Matterhorn is one of the hottest ski bars and is the place to party on the weekends. Because of that it may or may not be your thing. If you can deal with the 30 minute wait for a beverage or don't care if you're drinking and just rather dance like my friends and myself, then you will love this place. If you just want your drink and don't like walking around in capacity with hot and sticky dancers then this may not be your thing and you may want to avoid the 'horn on a Saturday evening. If you like to dance, Matterhorn continues to bring in the best bands and knows how to throw some awesome parties! They also have pretty decent food if you get there on a not so busy evening or early enough on Saturday. Be prepared for a cover on the weekends. Be prepared for it to be hot and crowded. This food was quite unpleasant. The pizza dough was chewy, cheap tasting, and premade, not hand seemingly tossed. The toppings for the pizza were very cheap, processed and had a hospital/frozen food metal taste to them. The pizza was also dry and didn't have enough sauce. The garlic knots were pretty bad as well. They were dry, chewy, and the marinara dipping sauce that came with almost tasted like chichis salsa.... For a total of roughly 30 bucks, I personally feel like my money would have been better spent purchasing a frozen freschettas pizza. I usually love this place, but my last experience I had called to try to get an order of pizzas to pick up. They informed me that they were no longer doing take out orders that night and I missed the cut off by about 15 minutes. I understand it starting to get busy, but just because I am sitting at one of your empty tables ordering 4 pizzas, or if I'm requesting I pick them up in 30+ minutes, I really believe customers are customers and making that call for no more take out is pretty ridiculous. Being a long time patron, a raving fan of the establishment, a skiing billboard for when people ask me "where should I go eat tonight?" - Camp... For restaurants in Sunday River, which are not as abundant as other ski towns, Matterhorn takes the cake. Maha and I arrived at about 7 pm one evening and we were pretty hungry for yummy food after trying the restaurant in the Jordan Grand and being almost put off food forever (I know, I know-the drama!). We sat down, ordered a Switchback for me and a Makers Manhattan for Maha, and set to studying the menu. We both wanted something filling but not too heavy, so we decided to share the tuna tataki, the lobster salad, and a 12 inch pizza. We ordered ground bison, mushrooms, and roasted garlic on whole wheat dough. The food was served pretty quickly and it was scrumptious. The lobster salad was epic, with almost a whole lobster sitting pretty on perfectly seasoned greens. We devoured the tuna, which was also good. The pizza was decadently delicious, with thin crusty crispy crust, amazing roasted garlic cloves, nice and juicy bison, and perfect button mushrooms. We left full but not stuffed, and dreaming of repeat performances of which I'm sure there will be many when we are in Sunday River again. read more

I went here while me and some friends were staying in town over New years. The place is huge, so it was good for the group of 20 people we were with. There was a cover band playing that night, so after the 20 of us were there for an hour and a half eating and buying drinks the hostess came up and told us that we each had to pay $10 to stay here and watch the band. There was a Patriots game, and we were all watching the game on the two small tvs near our seats - no where near the band. We were all kinda mad about this, since together we had already racked up a $350+ bill. Really? This is one of the best ski bars in all of New England. Sunday River is one of the biggest ski mountains, and every big ski mountain needs a great apres-ski and late night bar. This is it. The decor uses lots of old skis and signs, the TVs often have ski movies, the have a discount stein club for regulars and locals. There is much less attitude here than at the bigger bars near some ski resorts (read: Killington). Drink prices are average, good selection of beer, leaning toward New England micro-brews. I don't think I'd eat a regular meal here, but if you are desperate for pizza or something at 1 in the morning, I think it's your only option. If Last Kid Picked is playing here, do not miss it! They are a really, really fun cover band, changing the lyrics to some songs in hilarious ways. read more
