We had high hopes for this restaurant and we were excited to check out this seemingly nice dinner place in a small town. We understand that it was a busy night, but the hostess was a bit rude and we still had to wait 20 minutes even with a reservation. We don't mind waiting, but there wasn't a designated place to wait and ended up awkwardly standing in front of the bathrooms until we were seated. The waitress was nice but seemed confused about the specials and non-alcoholic drink options. The service was fine otherwise, and our food didn't take too long. The food is ultimately what prompted us to give this one-star review. For the prices that we paid, which were on average $30/plate, we found that it was severely lacking. The rice was sticky and undercooked in some parts. The food was under seasoned and did not match the descriptions on the menu. The "seasonal vegetables" were red peppers and broccoli. It was not bad, it just did not match the quality that we were expecting. Overall, we found this experience to be lacking and wished that we could have gotten more from this restaurant. read more

What a MEAL. This is the cutest most quaint spot in town. The interior and service were both top tier - but both didn't compare to the food. It was incredible. I got the crab Parmesan truffle carbonara (need I say more) and my husband got the lamb shank over risotto. Both were 12/10. Then for dessert (even though we were so full from the meal) we got the flourless chocolate cake and the CRÈME BRÛLÉE FILLED DONUT. Yes you read that right. Skip the chocolate cake and just get a dozen of the donuts. Krispy cream could NEVERRRR. I'm literally waddling out of here with the biggest smile on my face. From a family of self proclaimed foodies, Modern Barn gets 5 stars, hands down. Everything, and I mean everything, was wonderful! A beautiful and cozy space that was so inviting. The staff were so pleasant and attentive, ESPECIALLY our server. Honestly the service was the best I've experienced while dining out in quite some time. On top of the wonderful experience, the food was just as great. I've traveled the world for the last 35 years and have had great meals in Italy, Turkey, Japan, China, Bahrain, France, Spain, and too many other places to mention. Nice menu, but seemed a bit overpriced for this area off-season. We tried the candied bacon appetizer, which was not quite what we expected. My dinner companions had a refreshing salad of burrata and heirloom tomatoes--although they commented that the tomatoes were not really ripe--and shared a wagyu burger that was perfectly cooked, which they said was quite good. BUT I had ordered the prime filet mignon, which huge for a filet and was cooked as 5 separate thick slices. This was the toughest filet I've ever had in my life. Each slice was browned all around but mostly rare and purple. I knew I could ask for it to be taken back to be further cooked, but past experience with trying that at restaurants has been disappointing, so I didn't. We walked in three people and were first told that there were no tables without reservations but then the person had second thoughts and could seat us at a long narrow high top. Our friend has had similar experience were they were first told there was no tables but then the bartender came over and said they could sit at the bar. This just doesn't make it that welcoming. They might just not want too many customers of they are afraid they can't keep up. But service was pretty quick and food came surprisingly fast. I had the scallop risotto. The scallops were cooked perfectly but there were only three large scallops which I don't think was enough - it was a rather small portion. Modern barn has a very rustic, low lit ambiance when you arrive. There is a wall staged will all sorts of wine bottles to the right of the entrance which provides a nice back drop during the dining experience. They also have a jukebox to the left which was a fun addition. The beer list and cocktail list are quite large and the wine list is even larger almost three pages. The menu itself is just a page with a few options, I wouldn't say any of the options really jumped off the page for us. Our main issue was the temperature - we ate our entire meal in down jackets. There was a fireplace over to the left, but that provided absolutely zero warmth for our side of the resturant. It was unreasonably cold. The second issue was the service. Our server let us know she only works one night a week. She seemed a little scatterbrained/overwhelmed though the restaurant had about four occupied tables. It took at least 25 minutes to get our beverages and have staff regretfully inform us the bar was lacking ingredients for our cocktail order. Our server also never informed us they had flatbreads, which we only realized when when of us walked by a sign on the way to the bathroom. Sadly, this day the kitchen was out of the filet and rotisserie chicken and only had one ribeye left (several of us were excited for the chicken). Two of us ordered the shrimp scampi which left our tastebuds urning for more. It was disappointing and tasted like something I'd make at home. The pasta was really lacking flavor & seasoning and was quite watery. It didn't have the garlic, buttery taste you might expect. Our table also ordered the last ribeye which was correctly cooked to temperature and the flatbreads were a hit. Our server never asked us if we wanted additional drinks and came over to check in our how the meal was going when everyone was just about finished and then asked us to fill out contact tracing. Service was mediocre, they didn't have real salt (only tiny packets of iodine salt), the mushrooms were soft almost like from a can and my captain and coke was $16.50 plus tax and a tip. I typically pay $3.50 for a captain and coke at my local dive, so that seemed extreme to me. I wouldn't go here again, but I'm glad to pass this knowledge on. I cook with organic produce from scratch most days, and I consider myself a bit of a foodie. The food tasted just fine, but I wasn't very impressed. My 9 year old could cook that Marsala. It was loaded with garlic powder, Not real garlic. With prices like that the least you could do is mince up some fresh garlic. read more

Every table was experiencing the same service issues. They were trying to get the food out as soon as it was ready. Some tables received their dishes at intervals. The worst part of the night was the temperature inside the restaurant. The pellet stove was on but wasn't running to full capacity. Needless to say, everyone ate with their coats on. Came in for dinner with a group of 8 people at around 730p on a Friday night. The place was completely dead. A few older couples were eating dinner. A guy was playing guitar cracking a lot of dad jokes. The decor was cool, and the place has potential based on that. Three dart boards near the kitchen. Aside from that, It was not a great atmosphere to kick off a ski weekend. The beer list was good. Bissell Brothers and Maine Beer on draft. The cocktail list was... weird. It was February 1st, and they still had a full-blown Christmas themed cocktail menu. Someone in my party ordered one, and it literally came with holly berries on it... The food took 45 minutes to come out. Again, we were the only people in there. I ordered the California chicken sandwich which was very good. It came with one side and I added a baked potato. Two others ordered the salad with shrimp. The $17 salads came with TWO small shrimp on them. We asked, not to get more, but see if it was a mistake, and the waiter said he had no idea but would check. 20 minutes went by and he comes back and we say "what did you find out?" And he said "oh haha I forgot, ok do you want the check?" Terrible. In summary, good beers, potentially cool spot if it actually had music and wasn't a ghost town, ok food, high prices for what you get. I wouldn't return. read more

The bonus for the evening was the lively game of trivia that they play on Wednesdays. We had a blast playing with the rest of the clients; it was a highlight of our trip! I had such high hopes for this place. The decor is really cool, it's fresh and modern, the menu looked interesting and the area is so desperate for new restaurants. No complaints about the service (though she forgot to tell us about the specials). My biggest complaint is the prices and food. The food was just ok, it was hot and not terrible, but for these prices they need to step up their game...like about 10 steps. Honestly, I've had better chicken marsala at a chain restaurant...and for a lot less $$$. Our friend's burger was good, nothing special, but at $15...it outta be special. My husband did enjoy the pork chops. At the end of the evening, with four cocktails and food for four people (no dessert) the bill was outrageous. It was very disappointing. Also be aware, it can get extremely loud in there with music and loud parties. First time visit. Came on a Sunday at around 4:15 after a long day of skiing. Very modern barn exterior (hence the name?) in the heart of historic Bethel. Very clean, open dining area. We were only 1 of 3 sets of diners so service was first rate. We ordered the Mac and cheese with pulled pork. It was excellent. Very creamy, pork had a bit of a kick but a nice contrast. Large portion, we shared it and the steak tips. Steak tips come with two sides, we had French fries (very nicely crispy) and the veggies. Steak was delicious! This was our overall favorite dish. Had the brownie sundae for dessert. Came all warm with a generous scoop oF ice cream and whipped cream. Rumor has it the new version will include nuts is the brownies- my vote is NO! Keep the nuts out - this was perfect. The restaurant was a bit cold inside, really my only complaint. Definitely would return - support this business, food was very good and the price was reasonable. read more

Me made a reservation for 5 people, we showed up 10 mins early and still were seated 20 mins after our reservation in a booth that barely fits 3. It was clear we were not one of the "locals" and we were invading their space. They told us the reason we weren't seated on time is they didn't have enough menus... The food was terrible.
