Matsui is one of our favorite repeat spots in the Torrance area. The food is simple and delicious. The udon combo with katsu don is the default when we're not sure what to order. It's a lot of food and usually lasts for two meals. The black cod is a sleeper meal that we discovered towards the back of the menu if you're opting for healthier fare. We usually do takeout orders to enjoy at home but on the occasional dine in, the staff is friendly and courteous. The space is a relatively small but clean area. Highly recommended to try out at least once! read more

Wow there have been so many great Japanese spots we've stumbled upon since moving to Gardena. I can't believe we've sat on this spot for 3 years...what a mistake. First of all the price point for everything is relatively cheap compared to other Japanese spots in the area. All of this was only $60 after tip! Big portions. The takoyaki was just ok for me. Soft, no crunch and on the smaller side. Fried chicken was good. Loved the bite-sized karaage. Seasoned well. The curry udon was a winner for me. I'm a sucker for this dish and Matsui nailed it. Loved the consistency of the broth. It was definitely thicker and much richer compared to other spots. The udon was the star for both dishes with such a perfectly done texture. The dinner deal is a steal for the variety of dishes you get. Everything was cooked well with a solid mix of quality sushi. Will definitely be back soon! read more

Matsui is part of the Sushi Boy Restaurant group. Yikes. Personally, I don't like Sushi Boy so maybe my review is bias. For those that are not familiar with Sushi Boy, think: fast food sushi. Matsui offers great lunch and dinner sets for a wonderful value and their menu has plenty entree/combo options to choose from. The photos on Yelp looks good and the restaurant is highly rated... what's not to like? From our experience, the instant tasting soba noodles were way over cooked, the soba sauce/Japanese soup base (tsuyu) was highly missing something - it was not good. To put it simply, I compare bad tsuyu like going to an Italian American restaurant and the red sauce being bad. Tempura was super greasy and tasted of old oil. Takoyaki was very fishy... the saving grace of the meal was the fast food spicy tuna rolls. I must say, I wasn't looking for gourmet Japanese, just wanted simple cold soba and tempura on a hot day. The good? They have a large menu so there is something for everyone also i will mention again the food here is very affordable, and the service is very friendly. There were 4 of us. 2 were pleased and 2 were so-so because we each ordered different dishes. I ordered miso black cod which I love, but not served at all Japanese restaurants. The problem was that there was no miso taste. The color of the cod was white, which I'm used to seeing the color as brown (miso color). Anyway it was bland. One of the others ordered udon. He said the dashi (broth) was a little sweet or garlicky which is usually not the taste of the broth. read more

Got take out. Food was made quickly. 1. Nabeyaki udon: had soup and noodles separated so that the noodles don't become soggy. Didn't like the broth and udon was soft and not chewy q texture. 2. Tempura: tempura was soggy but crisped up in oven. Tempura batter was a bit too salty and dipping sauce was not sweet enough 3. Spider roll: a bit dry. Other places usually has sauce on top. We went on a Sunday evening and got seated right away. The service was nice and very quick. I ended up getting the Ten Don Combination which came with a Tempura Rice bowl and the Udon bowl. It is a huge serving and you definitely get what you paid for. The udon broth is super simple and the noodles have a nice chew to them. The set you need to order when you want to eat everything at the same time. Salad was refreshing. The dressing had the perfect acidity. Shrimp Tempura: maybe the oil is due to change, but did not affect the overall taste too much. Shrimp was tasty and juicy. Vegetable Tempura: there were 2 pieces of veggies with the combo set. Same oil issue but overall was fine. Hot Soba was well-cooked, not to hard nor to soft. The color of the basic soup base added extra appetite on me. Sushi was average, with the price of the combo, the freshness of the fishes, nothing to complain about but nothing to be fascinated. You can also choose to order hot udon or cold soba with the dinner special combo set. Customer service was great as usual: always check on you but not too often to be annoying. Refilled the tea for my friend timely. This time to add more on it: my friend forget her card underneath the receipts when walked out. The male server came out for her and returned the card. Originally had wanted to go to Wadatsumi but was turned away without a reservation so we walked into Matsui after circling the plaza. It was already packed inside around 6:30pm. We waited about 10mins which wasn't that bad. Looking around, it looked like almost everyone ordered the dinner special so that's what I ordered. It did not disappoint because everything in set was delicious. My favorite was the tempura, it was fried to perfection. My partner ordered the Sansai -wild mountain vegetable with rice. It got a bit salty in the end even with the rice. I would come back again to try the other dishes. read more

Saw this place on yelp and decided to check it out while we were in the neighborhood. This place specializes in noodles, Soba and Udon. They have both cold and hot noodle dishes, as well as some rice dishes. They also have combinations, which is a basic udon or soba paired with your choice of rice dish. The quality and taste of the food is excellent, and the service is also excellent. The Go Go Matsui bowl is a must try, 7 huge shrimp tempura + veggie tempura for just $13.45. There's also a daily special combo that comes with 7 nigiri sushi, soba, and some tempura which is good. Sushi was fresh and high quality. Overall the food quality was pretty mediocre. Nothing wow-ed, but also nothing was egregiously disgusting. For the variety, I'd say the price after tax was pretty fair. (Technically for a Japanese spread like this it'd be considered "cheap" but really after tax and tip, $17 for this meal was not very filling so overall the price is - fair). Note you can NOT add the 20% off to the lunch or dinner special. If I was in the neighborhood & didn't bring lunch for work, I wouldn't mind going back. I however would never travel or go out of my way to eat here. Just a side note (I unfortunately didn't notice this before) but there have been 9 health violations and a B rating during CV19, so please just stay safe everyone ! read more

This place is seriously the best! It has delicious food at a very affordable price. It's so hard to find a place like this nowadays, especially since everything is so expensive. I came here on a weekend with my S.O. and we both got the lunch special. It was too good a deal! The food came pretty fast and we throughly enjoyed our meal. I'm not sure why this place has 4 stars.. literally a 5 star restaurant! I've been coming here for 15 years and quality of food has not changed - always top notch with friendly service. It gets packed so come early or at a time where normal people don't eat lunch and dinner. About the picture. Sooo....ya I always forget to take a picture when the food comes cause I go face first. That's how good it is. Then I remember to take one once I cleared the whole tray lol I'll post one next time if I can remember. My usual is the Hand Roll Combination with cold udon. Sooo freaking good! Perfect chew on the udon and fresh hand rolls. We had a great time at Matsui. The food was fantastic and the service was so accommodating and friendly. We came here on a Friday evening and surprised that it wasn't busier. The food was very fresh and tasty, and the prices were very reasonable. The restaurant is located in an unassuming shopping plaza with plenty of parking. Nestled among other nearby restaurants, Matsui is exceptional. Great service, great food and experience. It is a smaller venue and not sure about accommodating larger parties. Their Nabeyaki Udon is the best. I find that its better than, just about any other top dollar Japanese Restaurant. They do not put Mochi and that's regrettable. However, I can no longer eat mochi, so no biggie. There are pieces of chicken, veges, shitake shrooms and udon. Comes with their 2 piece Tempura shrimp and veges. I must compliment them on their light tempura batter which is far superior and flakier than 'Tendon Tempura Carlos Jr.' or 'Azumas' Japanese restaurant. To me, Matsui is like a Japan train station fast food eatery. I wish Matsui had better grade sashimi and sushi's. (Just not up to par) But, like I said, its like fast food Sushi Boy type of sushi, not bad. But, don't worry, its not old, I just think they use albacore instead of maguro. Their Ten Zaru Soba combos and specials are a good deal but, the cold soba could use quality improvement. Its just okay. All in all, they have pretty good deals for a Japanese eatery. Waitstaff are masked and we were allowed to choose a table that had a bit more spacing than some others. Soon after we were seated, we got served glasses of iced barley tea. I first visited Matsui right after my trip to Japan in 2018. It was a delicious meal and definitely brought back memories of my trip. I definitely hope to visit Japan again one day. However with all the things happening currently in the world; I don't see any trip anywhere soon. Thankfully though Matsui is still around to offer delicious cuisine that reminds me of the land of the rising sun. Right now Matsui has a great deal with 30% off all their takeout orders. I came during lunch time and placed an order of Ten Don and Curry Don; both with a choice of Tanuki Udon and Tanuki Soba. With the 30% off it was about $21. This was definitely a great deal! They gave large bowls of udon and soba and along with the main entree bowls. They packed the crispy tempura flakes on the side for the udon on the soba and also packed separate chili pepper in case we wanted or soup to have an extra kick. It was definitely a lot of food and was good for two meals for my mom and I. It was just as delicious as I remembered except this time I got enjoyed it right at the comfort of my home. I'm happy to see Matsui open still and hope others too can support them (and enjoy some tasty Japanese food). read more

My husband decided to come here for an early dinner on a Saturday, around 5 pm. We didn't wait too long before we were acknowledged by a server and sat at a table. But there was definitely a wait for a table once we left (after 6 pm). After looking over the menu, we ended up getting: Tofu Salad Special, $11.95 prior to tax- This entree comes w/ a plate of tofu salad, miso soup and 3 pieces of inari sushi (rice stuffed inside a tofu pouch). I am not vegetarian but do like to eat tofu. I opted for this entree because I wanted a salad. I liked the sesame dressing (which I requested on the side) that was served along side the salad. I thought this dish did have plenty of tofu and is perfect to the tofu lover. I found this entree to be filling and enough food for me. I liked that my miso soup was served warm. Combination Special, $16.25 prior to tax- This item was not on the menu, but a special of the day. This came with your choice of soba noodles or udon, assorted plate of tempura, green salad and some nigiri. A pretty good deal with the variety of food you get and the portion. My husband and I both liked the food items that he got and thought the portion was more than enough for one person. ------------------------- (Total= $30.88 after tax, prior to tip) Service was minimal. We were checked on once during our meal. My water glass needed refilling and wished that it had. Seating is rather small and limited. We were sitting rather close to the tables on either side of us. It took me a long time to try Matsui even after living in the area for a while, and I regret that it did. It's really good! The food is truly tasty and authentic but also has a slight slant to adjusting to the American palette without selling itself out. I had the combo with sashimi, tempura, soba, and salad, and everything hit the spot. There is some staff who can speak Japanese but everyone is also fluent in English. Also, I thought it was cool that Hideki Matsui visited here and signed a paper that's on the wall. I also enjoyed that Shohei Ohtani merch joined the little shrine they have going on. read more

The kids meal says it comes with a toy but there was no toy that came with it. It comes with dessert but it was a packaged jello (saw able to see the imprinted writing from the bottom of the container) with some white sauce. So, if you're in the area, pop by and try one of their combination deals. At peak hours, there's a little wait, but the line moves fast and service is friendly. The shop itself is on the smaller side and has a clean and welcoming atmosphere. I really like the lunch special, which comes with salad, tempura, nigiri, and your choice of noodle (soba or udon and you can get hot or cold for each). There are a couple of cut corners: the shrimp is butterflied to make it seem bigger and the quality of the fish for the nigiri is could be better. However, the quality is still good enough to be satisfying. Plus, the portion size is incredibly generous and the price below $20 making the lunch special quite the steal. read more

This is more just solid authentically "homey" feel? Like the miso you can tell is more complex and it's not just "instant miso" that they throw together.
