Wow the menu is pretty extensive. Too much options. I came here with my friend for dinner. I ordered the Sushi Bento Box and he got the salmon gama and Matoi roll and tuna roll. The sushi bento box came with chicken teriyaki, salad, soup, nigiri sushi, tuna roll, tempura, sunomono and a fried croquette. Overall the food was tasty. It was nothing out of the ordinary or special in my mind. The only thing that I say is not my favorite is the fried croquette with tartar sauce on top. The best deal is the salmon gama. Wow the salmon gama was huge for the price. When we arrived, I have noticed that the place was already pretty busy. We were lucky to get a table. There are seats outside during the summer time but not for the winter. They don't have any external/outdoor heaters installed. The Japanese food is pretty authentic. Still one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in the Coquitlam area! They are often busy so I recommend reservations or by beating the usual dining times. They do also do takeout and it's great for grabbing dinners and entertaining guests. We often enjoy the bento sets the most but their rice bowls and sashimi always make us happy. My dad loves their deep fried whole sole. This time we opted for the oyako don and salmon belly (google won't let me add the older pictures I have unfortunately). We were looking for a restaurant with an extensive menu and this restaurant is definitely an option in the Coquitlam area. This restaurant offers some of the more unique Japanese options you do not find at many restaurants. We wanted to order a number of items off their daily specials menu. Unfortunately, those items were unavailable (ie bluefin tuna, crab motoyaki). We ended up ordering a number of items - deluxe assorted sashimi, tempura udon, and uni chawan mushi. My brother ordered a grilled salmon head and maki combo while my parents ordered some bento boxes. Food took a bit of time to arrive. The restaurant was busy with take out orders. Service was good. Kids plate and cutlery were dropped off. We had a pot of tea set aside on the table so we did not have to wait around for a refill. Our server offered to help take a group photo as she saw my dad attempt to take a group selfie. Food was fresh. I was very happy with the quality of the sashimi. Not your typical cookie cutter sushi restaurant. I walked in without any expectations, especially since Coquitlam isn't known for world class sushi. That being said, I was impressed with their "fresh" sheet (it's always encouraging when things are written by hand, indicating it changes frequently). I'm begrudgingly writing this review - 4 years ago I first came here, and it was busy that night, and selection of sushi was varied and overall good. Fast forward to this week, where I went for dinner here with my wife and it felt like a shadow of its former self. Maybe it was due to the pandemic, and I truly hope they turn it around. I ordered the 20$ sashimi bento box with beef teriyaki - sashimi was good but not super fresh, tempura was quite greasy but what surprised me most was the beef teriyaki wasn't hot, it wasn't even warm - as If it was made in advance? We also ordered the BC Roll and spicy tuna roll, both were decent but compared to so many other sushi places in Coquitlam that seem to have fresher fish, and just better preparation - it just wasn't up to par. Service: 10/10 Atmosphere: cozy and friendly restaurant Pricing: higher price than sushi town or sushi California but the quality is incomparable. Food: Deep fried whole sole 5/5: it is to die for! It was fried to perfection. It wasn't oily but yet so tasty. The sauce add a nice balance to the end Deluxe sashimi vs chef sashimi - 5/5 both are awesome but chef sashimi is more variety of fish. They show case anything that is fresh on the day. Personally I don't understand how to taste and understand each fish so I feel Deluxe sashimi was good enough for me. Grilled skewered pork belly 5/5 - with the miso sauce paste it tasted so amazing. It's like korean Japanese fusion. Oyster and seafood motoyaki 3/5 - I find it a bit too greasy. Negitoro Maki 3.5/5 - flavor tasted amazing but I would recommend less rice and more fish. The balance was a bit off. Uni nigiri - 5/5 - the live uni is from Japan and it was so rich in flavor words can't explain. I didn't order the uni sashimi because it is from Steveston. The uni they use of uni nigiri is from Japan. Overall Matoi food is amazing and I would definitely come back for more. Yesterday was the first time after a long time that I visited this restaurant and to my dismay the usual order of the sole fried fish was such a disappointment. The portion was very small for a whopping $17 ; it appears like they stole some pieces of the sole from my fish; not enough to satisfy my hunger and it also took very long for my fish to arrive. My daughter waited 45 minutes for her nabeyaki: not acceptable; I won't be coming back They have also jacked up their prices but the quality has definitely declined. What a disappointment. At first glance you might not expect much from this small restaurant, located in the suburb of Coquitlam, but you'd be pleasantly surprised. My friend and I ordered a dinner box, with beef and chicken, respectively. The service was friendly and efficient, the food was delicious, and it was open late on a holiday weekend, so I'm thoroughly satisfied. I enjoyed the tamago nigiri that came with the box--It was sweet, fluffy, and beautiful. I only wish there was more chicken teriyaki. Affordable exceptional sushi : Matoi Sushi This restaurant , Matoi Sushi was recommended by my hairdresser (Whose Japanese and her salon is located on Granville St in BC if you ever wonder). This place may be a bit far for some since its situated in Coquitlam but after trying various sushi joints in Vancouver and Burnaby and Richmond, I have to say this place has an excellent selection of sushi including some interesting ones Some I found on the menu that caught my attention was Sea Bass, three different kinds of Toro (mmm Toro) and Sea Bream Sashimi. I would say this is quite a different selection of sashimi compared to your typical salmon, tuna, octopus, tamago, tobiko, ikura, uni etc etc. We ordered the Sushi Combo B which includes Dynamite roll and 4 pieces of sushi. Dynamite Roll and 4 sushi (Toro, Salmon, Squid and Tamago) Notice the egg is not the typical extremely yellow egg So you can tell it's pretty legit here. Overall, the fish here is extremely fresh and be sure to get there early (even on weekdays!) because their supply of their daily specials (Sea Bream, Toros, and Sea Bass) will run out! Last time my friend and I went at 7:30pm and it was sold out already. Since they were sold out of their special sashimi, we each ordered a roll and this roll is amazing because there is fish all the way from the top to bottom! I can honestly say there is more fish than rice in this cone and the fish once again is extremely fresh! It's been 2 months since my visit to Matoi and I'm still thinking about it. That's how amazing their lunch bento box was and I've yet to put my finger on one place who does a bento so well for such a darn great price. Authentic Japanese. That's something I rarely find in California and it makes all the difference in the world... the flavors have subtle differences you just can't find in a Korean run Japanese joint (I frequent those quite a bit and have no offense against them). I opted for the bento combo which had the chicken teriyaki and sashimi. Because we had just hiked, and hence a little dirty for two girls to lunch in public, we did take out. About $12 per person and 15 minutes later we unpacked our meals. I was shocked at how much there was for the price. Did they accidentally pack up someone else's alongside ours? Nope. We had salad, rice, a huge assortment of tempura, chicken teriyaki, the chef's special appetizer (fried tofu) and then the sashimi. The two combos were honestly enough food for a family of four. Great quality, especially the sashimi. Cut a little larger then I'm used to (but I 'ain't complaining), it was perfectly fresh. The chicken teriyaki had just the right amount of white and dark meat and just enough sauce. Great tempura and though not my thing, my sister raved about the fried tofu. We ate it at her Japanese style table (she used to live in Japan), drank some green tea and chatted for what seemed like hours over our food. It was a nice afternoon and will probably make for a nice memory. The food definitely had something to do with it. The oysters were small and one of them still had a piece of shell attached on it. Matoi, what a hidden gem in Coquitlam. Real Japanese chefs, with horrendous service (ok, maybe it was just that one time). It's like a price to pay to eat good sushi, to sit through endless waits, unapologetic waitresses when they make mistakes, and to wait some more. Actually we've been back a few times since, and it really isn't that terrible. Matoi is quickly growing to be one of my go-to Japanese restaurants in Coquitlam, Tri-Cities, especially when Shyun my prior favorite has gone significantly downhill with double sliced warm sashimi and 35 min wait for a simple negitoro roll (No Thank You!) My love for Matoi doesn't stop at fresh sashimi at reasonable prices. It extends to their wide range of robata and cooked food selection of grilled Atka fish to salmon bellies to gyu tongues to ponzu mirugai. I have to admit the space is rather tight inside and often there isn't room on a Friday night, but if you learn to make rsvp and/or go earlier, you're bound not to suffer too long. Toro and Hamachi Sashimi: The toro has a melting butter meets fatty acid type of love thang. And the Hamachi is tight and springy that doesn't suffer from freezer burns. Negitoro Roll: Simple toro and green onions rolls into a gentle maki. Grill Sockeye Salmon Belly: Generously charred skin and a moist, juicy center. The portions for regular salmon are bigger than the ones for sockeye salmon. Zaru Soba Ten: Dog days of summer calls for something chilled. These cold noodles were perfect; perfect in texture (al dente); perfect in temperature. Size plate of tempura consisting for two prawns and your seasonal greens. The soba noodle dipping sauce was evenly distributed between soy sauce and mirin (rice wine). Deep Fried Sole: Flash fried and crispy enough to eat the bones. Some dipping sauce is provided on the side. Tobiko and Quail Egg: Egg on egg action with popping flying fish roe and a creamy yolk. Ponzu Mirugai: Thinly sliced geoduck mixed with seaweed, cucumbers and a ponzu vinaigrette. Refreshing. Simply not enough. Gyu Tongue: Grilled beef tongue sprinkled with some sea salt. I can believe why this place isn't on Yelp yet. I didn't even know this place existed until last week, when we had a send off dinner for a departing coworker. It's located in the same plaza as the White Spot on Lougheed Highway (going to Poco). Left on Westwood from Lougheed, first left onto Crabbe Rd then the plaza is first left again. Plenty of free parking. A sweeter bonus: Pearl Fever is right in the same plaza...sushi, sake and bubble tea after is pretty much my idea of a weekday trifecta. Since then, I've been back several times for the freshest, yummiest Japanese delights this part of town. I'm pretty sure it is an authentically-owned-by-Japanese-people place. You can hear the chefs and all the servers communicating with each other in Japanese. Their sushi menu is nothing extraordinary, it's a bit year 2000, though they do it well too. We ordered our food. The Sashimi Chef's Special, which was so good we ordered it again. The sashimi was very fresh and the chef was very attentive, he knew that we ordered a 2nd time and made sure that there were other sashimi items on the 2nd order that were not on the first. We also had the Sushi Combo C and the Maki Combi B, both were also very good. The rice on the sushi was of the right texture and taste. We also ordered the deep fried soft shell crab, which was a nice and crispy and doesn't have that oily taste. The zaru soba was also very good, the soba was just a tad al dente which gave it a nice chewiness and the dipping sauce was just the right amount of saltiness and flavor. I just wished they had given a quail's egg with it. Do try the Yosenabe (seafood soup). It was absolute delicious, the soup was choked full of seafood (crab, salmon, etc) and was very flavorful, like it has been simmered for quite a while. The chef's special sashimi platter has your typical salmon and tuna, but also includes geoduck, squid, octopus, sea urchin and other unfamiliar white fish. You can even order a fish head set meal. But this is about the food! Me & my boyfriend ordered the usual: dynamite roll, california roll, tuna and salmon maki, toro nigiri (aburi style) and tempura. These are our "basics" to determine if we like the sushi place or not. If they can't get the basics right, no point in trying anything else. We also ordered a smoke salmon roll. Tempura - okay, wow. The assorted tempura was great. Instead of the usual veggies and 1-2 prawn, we got veggies, couple of fried white fish, 2 prawns, and one huge full sized one, head attached and all. Great food! Fresh sashimi, love their sesame ice cream dessert! Awesome service, highly recommend!

Eww. Thought id try it out. Menu looks fantastic. It was busy inside but the food was gross. Dont order the seafood mototaki. Its disgusting. The salmon belly sashimi had a funky taste and smell and it was frozen. The simplest roll, cali roll was unbearable. The only decent roll was the special unagi Roll. Guess most sushi places r going to hell nowadays since theres so many. read more
