Matilda Empanadas are based in Providence, RI and can be found at farmer's markets, fairs, festivals, breweries, around Rhode Island, and all around The East Coast. I first saw Matilda Empanadas at SoWa Winter Festival in Boston, but didn't have a chance to try them then. When I saw Matilda Empanadas was coming back to the Providence Winter Farmers Market at Farm Fresh Rhode Island every Saturday for the month of November on their Instagram (@matildari), I knew I had to take the opportunity to try their heart-shaped empanadas. We found the Matilda Empanadas table inside and ordered 3 empanadas ($8.00 each). I had wanted fries too, but they were sold out. We got the Slow Roasta, Beefy Mac, and Cuban "Jamon y Queso" empanadas. The Slow Roasta has roasted black Angus beef with local herbs and Dominican spices, caramelized onion and trio-mushroom, sofrito braised black beans, roasted corn, roasted red pepper, cheddar cheese and a touch of dark chocolate. The Beefy Mac has roasted black Angus beef with local herbs and Dominican spices, macaroni with a house-made roasted garlic cheese sauce, and a touch of roasted red peppers. The Cuban "Jamon y Queso" has slow roasted pernil (pork) with local herbs and Dominican spices, roasted ham, Swiss Cheese, and a touch sweet relish. All the empanadas had a really nice crispy shell and you can tell the dough is made from scratch and homemade. The filling was also very good and flavorful. The spicy tomato aioli was so delicious and great sauce for the empanadas. After taxes, $25.92 does seem a little pricy for 3 empanadas but I know they were made with love. I do wish they were a little bigger but they did taste very good.

I love this good truck! They recently catered an organization's May meet up and I ran to get a plate (or two). Their heart shaped empanadas are delicious! I loved the Cuban. I tried both the plantain chips with spicy mayo and the Dominican rice & beans. Everything was sooo good! The truck workers were efficient & kind. If you come across their food truck, I highly recommend you give them a try!

Amazing empanadas and great customer service. I got the spinach one in their Boston Portuguese Festival and I would want to try new flavors. I thought the concept of heart shaped empanadas were too cute not to try and did not disappoint. It is in the pricy side of $9 each empanada and their fries are not good. But the spicy mayo sauce is to die for!

Went to the food truck at PVDfest, not cheap but soooooo good! I had the Mrs Mac and could eat a million of them (except they were definitely pricey!). A fun treat yourself! Their secret ingredient really is love!

The sweetest business owners with the cutest empanadas! Where else can you find heart shaped empanadas AND Vegan options?! I'm so thankful for this place. There's not an empanada I didn't like on their menu.

    Beefy mac is sooo good

Little goes a very long way. I also tried the chicharrone (which has yelp can't spell for me) and it was very interesting. Good. Very very crunchy- gave nice strong teeth and nice pork flavor. Also not greasy. Also tried the plantain- I am partial to the sweet ones. This was ok I just like 'em sweeter. I look forward to going back. Ladies behind counter were super. Colombian music playing so created atmosphere while we sat and ate. Lovely experience.

Parking can be challenging especially seeing this restaurant runs on Lonsdale Ave a busy street in itself. The line was out the door and that's where I stood waiting patiently. The love moves at a decent pace. Here finally my turn and I honestly had no clue what to expect or what they even really sold but I was hoping they had anything that contained ham and cheese and they did, Brad with ham and cheese for $3.50 I was surprised that was all. They do gave finger foods, drinks coffee and fruit drinks, breads, pastries of many sorts. I was tempted to get a pastry but I stayed focused. The bread was actually good and tasted fresh they only concern which was a big one for me was that there was hardly any ham and cheese in it and I mean like barely none. I could have actually went with just bread as that's what I felt I received. Would I return maybe especially if I am in mood for something g sweet as the variety was plenty to choose from. There is a sit down area on both sides of the restaurant with one big screen tv. This place seems more of a grab and go type establishment. They open at 5:00am and close at I believe 9:00 pm

**November 2025: Early Afternoon Visit**…read more My friend and I are on a roadtrip, and I saw all the positive reviews and thought this would be a great place to grab a snack for later. The shop is located in an ethnic part of town, right at the corner, and parking is pretty tight. I think there's three parking spots and admit that we did have a little trouble trying to get our spot. Eventually we secured a spot and I ran in to see the offerings. The shop is very intimate and the tray had a good assortment of savory empanadas and sweet pastries. There's no seating area and is definitely a grab and go type of joint. After looking at all the options I bought 4 empanadas (for a total of $11.86 paid cash. When I got home later that day I was really impressed by the flavors of each. They weren't in the slightest bit greasy and the filling to dough ratio as excellent. Spinach & Cheese: $3.00 (?) - great vegetarian options. It was creamy and Rancheta: $3 - Pork Sausage and Corn (LOVED THIS!) - This was recommended by the hostess and it did not disappoint. The sweetness of the corn complimented the salty/savoriness of the sausage Beef/Carne $2.70: Juicy and flavorful Pernil Pork $2.80: This one was my least favorite, even though it was still very good. I guess pork is a little drier than beef, but still good Overall - a fantastic find and all the trophies displayed are well deserved. If I come back to providence I will certainly make a trip here for the pockets of joy!

This place is massive, with lots of tables to dine in, and a bakery section. We ordered the following: Mondongo (pequeño), bandeja paisa, lengua sudada, and res apanada. The food came out in about 20 minutes. The serving sizes were a little bigger than normal (I am not complaining), every plate looked delicious, and all the plates were hot and fresh. The mondongo was tasty and had a good amount of tripe and the right thickness of the broth. I chuckled when I saw the side of banana, but honestly, it made for a good desert. The bandeja paisa brings a litte bit of everything and it all was cooked well. The lengua sudada was very tender and flavorful and the yucca was soft, with the sauce it was in giving it a really good flavor. The res apanada was a bit tough and the breading did not stick on too well, but overall the flavor was good and the breading was crispy which I enjoyed. The best part of it all was the prices. It is very affordable and you will leave full.   The bakery is inexpensive and the items I have tried and good. They do have a large parking lot and it's free. While in the area, you could visit the Slater Mill (they have tours you could sign up for) or visit the public library. One thing to note is that the GPS might bring you to their old location a couple blocks up the street, so do a little bit of research for the address beforehand.

Todays location and vibe was that of a block party, set up right in the middle of the street in front of the Pawtucket Visitors Center. They sell 350 tickets that are $10 if purchased online ahead of time or $15 day of at the check in tables, which is a super reasonable price to sample some of the city's best empanadas. This year there were 8 participating restaurants and each one did a nice job of representing their brand. There was also free face painting and caricature drawing tents available for attendees and an awesome band playing live music. The volunteers we interacted with were nice and this year they handed out these green frisbees, which most people used as plates to collect and carry their food. It's a great time and really neat idea and totally worth checking out. This years event had some logistical problems which caused long lines and significant crowding in one area of the block party, hopefully they learn from this experience and try a different set up for next year.

Most of them were corn based, fried with either chicken, beef, pork or seafood fillings. A few were dough based (baked). It was a great event, where I got confirmation that the places I usually go for are still the best for empanadas. My favorites were Delicias de mi Tierra, La Sorpresa and El Paisa. Hope the event comes back next year. Should be fun...
