Ten minutes off of the lot the car they sold me completely breaks down. Engine is blown. tried contacting my salesman Paul but wouldn't get a reply. (they were trying to wait the three days so they didn't have to cover the costs). I kept contacting them till I got a reply and eventually they said they'd fixed it. they wouldn't given me any loaners and also offered me to switch cars which then they added that I'd have to pay $10,000 to switch and still have to pay my current loan. I just want to start my review on a positive note. I walked into Mathison,in need of a car immediately and with no credit established. I was very pleased with how fluid and simple the process was. I left almost 3 hours later having financed a "nused" vehicle. A couple of other "Buy Here, Pay Here" dealerships turned me down, stating that I was too new of a resident to Minnesota and they didn't want to take the risk given that I had no established credit history (for reference, I prefer to pay cash as much as possible). To be fair, I knew exactly what I was getting with a credit repair dealership so I was not the slightest bit shocked by the interest rate or the payment terms. After all I only needed the car for the job offer that I had accepted which meant I would have no issue meeting the payment schedule. In fact, I felt like I had some solace in the knowledge that I at least had 24 months of warranty coverage on the powertrain. Coupled with the free oil changes I easily able to loosely justify the deal, given the position of need that I found myself in. Now we get into the crux of my 3 star rating. I purchased the vehicle "As Is" which is nothing uncommon. one month after my purchase, Covid emerged and I inevitably drove my car much less than anticipated. I say that to say, I put maybe a thousand miles on my car before having to replace a wheel bearing. Not being a warranty covered repair, I paid the cost. Again, clearly stated in my contract, so no disappointment there. Although I did inquire about possibly being considered since I so recently made my purchase. Anyway, as time gores on, I'm making on time payments and still am content with my free oil changes, because that to me is seen as a simple customer service detail that make me smile. You know, like a record executive that signs an artist to a crappy deal but still buy them a brand new car to take their mind of the fact that they've signed away their royalty rights. lol A little over a year passes and I decide that I can afford to pay off my loan early. I know right, adult stuff here. Even though, with my final pay out, I still paid way more than the vehicle was worth, I knew what I singed on for when I drove it off the lot, so there's very little disappointment there. Still, I was quite content with my experience, simply because I felt that even though I had bought my car outright at this point, I was still taken care of because I had a year's worth of oil changes left on my deal. IN my head I was thinking, "Yeah, I might have outrageously overpaid for for my car but hey, at least they still got me on the oil changes. Now, that's good customer service. You know, it's the little things that make me happy" It's like when you spend 300K on a Rolls Royce and they take the time to make sure you have two nice umbrellas as a complimentary "Thank You for Your Business." I mean, it's not in the contract(and believe me, I looked) but it's that little touch of "We Appreciate Your Business" that fosters relationships. I used to have have a glass of bourbon or champagne for my own clients when they'd come to spend a couple of grand or more with me as their clothier. They knew that the drink didn't cost me much but it said to them that I was grateful for their business relationship. I also found that it was often one of the highlights mentioned in their word of mouth recommendations to others. So, you can imagine my disappointment when I scheduled a oil change, after paying of my loan, and went in to find out that I was not listed in the system anymore. I drove over to the finance office and I was told that since I paid my debt, I no longer was privy to my last year of complimentary oil chances that I was getting during my finance period. That really bummed me out simply because I thought I was getting a little morsel of thanks, especially after I had just paid almost double the car's value into the Mathison profit margin. With all of this said and done, I still want to thank Mathison for financing me at a time when I needed it most, thanks for making the process easy, and Thanks for an overall well running car. Moving forward I will not personally continue to recommend people that I cross paths with to the dealership, I plan to stop freely advertising for the dealership in traffic(with their logo on the trunk of my car, I've replaced it with a magnet of my hometown flag), and I will shop elsewhere for my next used vehicle purchase. In summation, it's still a business that thrives and profits on a clienteldisaapointmente base that simply has little to no options when in need of purchasing a second hand vehicle. I just hope my experience offers thoughtful shoppers some insight to further guide a purchasing decision while shopping around. My only disappointment at this juncture, is assuming they had my back, even though they were no longer financially in my pocket. Business is business. Customer appreciation costs extra. read more

They are high priced, for high mileage vehicles. But so are all buy here, pay here dealers. I bought 2 trucks from them, because my credit was shot. They allowed me to finance any repairs that were not covered under the warranty, and when the engine overheated, and the needed to be replaced, it cost me a $200.00 deductible. Im not sure if its the finance department that the girls are a bunch of b***hes or what it is - Bought a truck from them, had a concern on tranny - was told its just a warning light and itll go away - service staff took vehicle and light was gone, Alright no problem there - low and behold after driving for the time frame it was damaging the vehicle My home mechanic comes back and says "whoever fixed this welded this and did that and its all bad" BAM $2000 later I have to replace the 4WD - Ive worked on cars for years, I dont have the space nor time to fix but when you owe $4k and the repair is half that Im like WTF I brought this up at the time of sale and you said it was nothing - Lying sack And to think that it couldve been fixed upfront and we wouldve been good really pissed me off cause its like fix it right guys. I am only leaving the 1 star rating because it is required to leave the review. I am so far below the 1 star rating my step daughter has had her car for 5 months that she bought from Mathison Motors in Clearwater MN. It has now been in the shop 3 times in the last 2 months, almost half of the time she has owned it, with major engine issues. First time we paid for the tow and a deductible. After it being in the shop for 3 weeks, it crapped the bed just 5 days later. The 2nd time, same issue, different fix, the fix they should have done the first time, took 3 days. THIS time they are saying its an unrelated issue and charging $150, or should I say CHARGED the $150 because they went ahead and made the "repair" with out calling for approval... for what I can only guess will be for topping off the blinker fluid and greasing the horn bearings. This company is a JOKE! beware this dealership!! Sure they'll get you into a vehicle.. But one that they've done nothing to ensure is road worthy. I purchased two vehicles in one shot for my pregnant wife and I in May. My wife's vehicle has had to go into the shop 4 times now. The latest time for a $500+ fix (which of course is not covered by their joke of a warranty) my vehicle is also in need of mechanical work. After digging into the engine, it's half electrical tape, and is in need of a new clutch. The salesman John sold me a true P.O.S. This company does nothing to stand behind any vehicle they sell. Horrible customer service horrible cars do yourself a favor hit up Subaru or Kia or tenvorde ford and use their buyers with issues program you will get a better car for the money you pay! This place rips you off the car they sold me had an engine block harness that needed to replaced and a bad starter from day one ! When I tried to contact them to return it with in the third day rule they dodged me so I got stuck with a crap car that I had to put thousands into to fix. I bought a Buick lesabre from them. It looked nice and was the nicest car on the lot. I was pretty skeptical of the whole deal when we got there. I will never forget the sales guy James. He was rude and used foul language. Took personal phone calls while on the job. He worked with us for about half an hour. He handed me a list of cars I was approved for. None of them looked at all nice. We talked to Jon shortly after. He was originally our sales guy. He showed us the Buick. Long in short we had the car about 6 months. I maintained the oil changes myself since we lived in Anoka I did not want to make the drive to Clearwater to get free oil changes. Long story short the car started falling apart in that 6 months. The suspension was so bad the shocks struts needed to be replaced along with the brakes. When I did call them they said well what do you expect you never bring the car in for service. When we purchased the car they told me that all that stuff had been replaced. I had it towed to mathison motors mechanics. They said that it would not be worth the price of fixing the car. John called me and said okay here is what we are going to do. I talked to the finance people. They are gonna put you in another car but we need 500 down payment and they are going to tac on the amount you owe for the Buick on the the new loan. I said no I don't think I should have to pay for that car. I told him that every mechanic I brought the car to told me about the issue. One week after we bought the car I brought it to a place near my house for a very simple tune up. They told me about these issues with the struts and shocks. I called mathison about it and they said they couldn't do anything about it. So after all of this I refused to work with them and I said you have to the car. I'm not making anymore payments. I kept getting calls from Clearwater finance. Saying I still needed to pay for the car. A car that is not drivable I told the people that they had the car and I'm not interested in buying or working with them. They flagged my credit report and said it was an In voluntary repossession. When in fact it was not at all repossessed I brought it to them! I paid 150 dollars to have it towed there! They screwed me over I also never missed a payment until this started happening. And when I called to confront them they said sorry sir but you couldn't pay your bills. It made me so upset that they did this. And when I have called back to complain and talk to my finance person they never call me back. I'm sure if they did call them back they would offer to take the repo off all together if I bought another car from them! But I do not want to spend my money paying off a car that had over 250,000 miles on it! With a bunch of issues. Instead of going back to mathison motors we went to maple auto mall. My gf and I purchased a 2013 Chevy Sonic for 10 grand. With only 10,000 miles on it. The buicks original price tag was 3 grand. But I've done my research about this and the Buick was only worth about 600 dollars with the high miles when we bought it. Like many of you we have terrible credit. We thought we didn't have any options and nobody would work with us. But that is simply not true. There are so many better dealerships out there with financing available with poor credit. So please don't get ripped off and scammed by these guys! It's not worth it! Please check out cornerstone auto in Plymouth they sold me my 2011 VW Jetta SE they were able to finance me. I have bought 2 cars there. Paid more than what they are worth. That's my fault. Issue that I am having is with the financing department. I have never been late on a payment in 3 yrs. i went on medical leave and got to be longer than I expected. The day that my payment was due and there wasn't enough money in the account for the payment. I was called many times a day and told the same thing bring the car back or ask friends for money "this is a high risk loan. We have no grace period". They were told numerous times payment would be made in 5 days. That wasn't t good enough. Told again bring car in. According to this Sue they come and get them you have to bring them to them if you are a day late on your payment. This place sells you junk cars and are they treat you like a crook if you have to make a payment 5 days late. Informed my references that they had called what was going on.
