Matchless Bar - Vanilla Bean and Cocoa Nibs Barrel Aged

I have always loved Matchless beer. Some of the best beer I've had. Their Tumwater warehouse is perfect. Just bite, nothing but some snacks here. The beer is delicious with many choices on tap and you can buy cans to open and drink onsite as well as buy 4 packs to go. Place is very dog friendly and staff is super friendly.

Matchless is built in a part of Tumwater near the airport that looks like it should be used for industrial storage, with large RV doors and rectangular, metal buildings to maximize space and reduce maintenance required. These types of areas are ideal for breweries. It is a blank slate for brewers to build on, without the limits of external noise, unseemly shops, or parking. Matchless started with this blank slate and created an airy, hip, welcoming brewery. The large RV doors allow everyone inside to feel as if they are outside in a shaded area. There was a very relaxed atmosphere with everyone enjoying their day. The light beers we had were good quality.

Great new brewery in the Olympia area. The place is huge and the inside is decorated in a '50s theme. There is also a large bar with cream plenty of counter space. There are lots of tables throughout and it is also family friendly. There were quite a few beers on tap. I had a gold lager. It was a solid beer. I really liked this brewery, I would stop by again sometime.

This is going to end up being one of my favorite breweries. I found them by chance really. My local bottle shop had a couple of their beers. First we tried dallah and it is definitely one of my favorite breakfast stouts. Than I had a chance to experience fluff. That was such a fun flavorful IPA. I then checked the back of the can and realized they were in Tumwater. I was shocked to discover this and excited to make a trip. We planned a trip to hang down in Olympia, and truthfully it was an excuse to hang with friends at a new brewery. We had 3 different beers, but honestly dont remember which ones at this point. Each beer was very tasty and I am very glad we visited. The scene great, classic converted warehouse brewery. We will definitely make a trip here again in the future. As a protip: there is another local brewery on the other side of the building, called triceratops. Its definitely worth visiting if you are here. A second protip UBEReats delivers here, use the app and get some Eagans. Oh and third bonus tip: Cell phone reception is the pits and they have wifi just ask for the password.

Closest pictured is Hop Nectar IPA and then Moving Target IPA.

Super friendly staff! Love that I can enjoy a beer with my pup sitting next to me. It's also close by shopping areas and the outside area is spacious and clean!

Ah! Another new brewery in Olympia! When I first moved to Washington state Olympia only had one brewery(this was just several years ago too) but as time has moved on more have popped up in the area. Olympia seems like a great city for breweries and I was surprised that there wasn't more before. I paid a visit here last spring when investigating businesses from the yearly "Best of Olympia" article but as it was they weren't quite open yet. Matchless is in a business park and right around the corner on the other side of the building there is another brewery so you can park your car and enjoy two breweries in one shot! Matchless has a good sized taproom and was spacious. The day I went here was a Saturday and it was busy but despite that there was still plenty of room to sit which was great! At Matchless I got their Mexico Gold Lager. I have been on a real kick with lagers this summer... bonus points if it's a Mexican one. The Mexican lager here was decent... definitely enjoyable but I usually like Mexican lagers more with just a hint of tequila to them which breweries often do by putting beer that is getting brewed in with tequila barrels. Still it was good! Matchless has a big selection of IPA's if you check out their website and I had a sample of one which was very good... I believe it was the Old Pine IPA which I found very enjoyable. Matchless is a good, solid brewery in town. I would indeed come back and would try their other beer selections!

I genuinely find it in bad form…read more Sometimes, though, a business does something- not necessarily good or bad - that bears mentioning for the benefit of the public. My wife and I had been looking forward to trying Hoh River Brewery since we moved to the area a few months ago. The South Sound's brewery game is *weak,* and Hoh seemed promising. So on a rainy day, we loaded up the family and some card games and headed to Tumwater for some beer and good times. We walked in at 2:00 pm on the dot on a Saturday. Literally no one else was patronizing the place at the time. As it happened, neither would we. We were immediately informed that the place is 21 and over only. Look, 21+ establishments are fine. Whether it's for compliance reasons or just because the owners want a spot free from kids for adults to relax in a quiet atmosphere, I get it. I don't think it's a smart business decision if you can avoid it, but I get it. My *problem* isn't with the policy. My problem is their lack of transparency about it. It should be on their website front and center, not under the "when to find us" tab with their hours. They should also, at the *very* least, have a sign on the door like a normal 21+ establishment so you don't even walk in with kids. We didn't see a sign before or after entering, and if there just had been some warning, I wouldn't be writing this. As an example, here is the text from an event on Facebook: "Heads up, Tumwater and Olympia -- we're heading your way! Mark your calendars for 12/10 and join us for our pre-order pick-up event where we bring the best of our bakery to you! Swing by to pick up your order and indulge in a wide selection of refreshing lagers, delightfully smooth sours, and more from our friends at Hoh River Brewery " (This was I believe written by a guest vendor, but just an example of when mentioning age restrictions wouldn't hurt.) Here is from their FB page header: "Craft brewery in Tumwater with Hoh River connections. Combined taproom with a distillery." On their business website, there is no mention of age restrictions until you get to the "when to find us" page. There are plenty of family-friendly breweries/taprooms in the area (we went to Triceratops Brewing after being rejected here), so it isn't weird for us to expect that here. And again, I'd be fine with them being 21+ only IF THEY WERE UP FRONT ABOUT IT SO I DIDN'T DRIVE 20 MINUTES TO GET THERE! This review is a heads up to readers, and a plea to the owners to be more up front about the restrictions on Facebook and their website. It's naive at best and rude and idiotic at worst.

Pros: Chill lounge/sitting area at the front corner with sofas, a low bar (accessibility friendly) and board games. Big tables to accommodate groups and various bar seating. Large brewery menu screens with large range and the food looked good. Tbh we came for brews so can't comment on food. The Wildman Beer brand was so-so. Some better than others! Cons: FOH staff interaction. Why we love pubs/breweries is because of the chill, friendly, conversational flow of FOH; their knowledge of the beers and/or cocktails, their passion for sharing it with new customers so they come back again and again ... this vibe fell short at Wildman. TL;DR Good for a basic group of people looking for a brewery experience in town with room for large groups. But when I saw that they opened up a location in Olympia and Steve and I were going to Olympia for a show it made perfect sense to go to this new location. Downtown where our show was is super walkable and this brewery is right there. When we went in what escaped my attention at the Raymond location was that I was particularly impressed with their own mead selection. And the mead did not disappoint in the slightest. The first mead I had was their Oak Aged Classic Mead. Such fantastic balance in body and the oak flavor was truly impressive! I got another mead from the list, the Sneaky Bastard Meer. It's called meer I believe due to the five different kinds of hops they put into it. Great floral and honey flavored highlights! Our experience here was excellent! Steve enjoyed his drink selections as well! Definitely returning for more mead enjoyment!

This little area near the airport seems to be the brewing epicenter of Olympia. Triceratops has high quality beer in a relaxed environment. The two times we were there they had a baseball game and a football game on the TV. It doesn't seem as "trendy" or "hip" as other breweries, but I'm not always interested in a trendy brewery. Sometimes I want to try a new beer on tap while watching the game. It helps that the garage door is open creating a hybrid outdoor/indoor environment. The last time I was there I enjoyed their red ale. My wife and I don't find many red ales that we like but I'm always searching for the elusive, quality red ale. Triceratops has a good red ale.
