Went to Matchbox for date night in the Mosaic District -- it's really cute and perfect for spring and summer. There's a nearby parking deck as well as street parking, though it does get busy. We were seated immediately upon arrival. At first, we were placed near the bar area, but we asked to move because the lighting was very dark and felt a bit too sleepy for a date-night vibe. The staff was accommodating, and the service overall was good. Our waitress checked in multiple times to make sure we didn't need anything. The food was solid. I ordered the chicken Alfredo and calamari. The calamari was the standout--perfectly crispy and flavorful. I was also pleasantly surprised by how spacious the restaurant is. My friends and I gather here every couple of months because it's a good middle meeting ground. Sundays at Mosaic can be a parking and traffic pain because of the market. It clears out by afternoon. This Matchbox location is a 3 start best. Why? The staff doesn't wow me. They are not accommodating and not astute enough to realize that if they deliver a Mimosa Tower(one that serves 4-6 people) then they should also provide us with glasses. We always sit in the bar area so having to stand up to get our own glasses at the bar is convenient but honestly if you are charging us 20% mandatory gratuity then bring us glasses with our giant $40 tower. We ordered 2 towers. Food is good. The plates present well and our crowd enjoyed their salads and mini burgers. Our only complaint was that the fries were not hot. Our group of eight visited Matchbox for a late lunch on Saturday. The restaurant is quite spacious, offering both indoor and outdoor seating. Since they didn't have a table large enough for our group, we were split between two separate tables. Service was on the slower side. We were seated in the back of the room, and it took a while for our server to take our orders. I opted for the Restaurant Week promotion, a 3-course lunch for $25, which was a great deal. I had the arancini fried risotto as an appetizer, fish and chips for my entrée, and a classic brownie for dessert. My husband ordered the Pig & Pineapple pizza, and my niece had the Burrata & Salami pizza. Both pizzas had a thin, crispy crust and were delicious. As a food reviewer I am going to be blunt - we came here after almost a 7 year hiatus (from a previous poor experience) in the hope it had improved and this is my verdict: Friday night and the place was dead so that should have been a red flag. Always been a fan of Matchbox pizza and recently saw on TikTok that the Fairfax and Silver Spring location have a great brunch. $35 dollars for food with a great selection on the menu and you can add bottomless (mimosas, strawberry lemon drop martini, espresso martini, and Bloody Mary for an additional $25.) The waitstaff was great and very attentive to see if we wanted more food or drinks. They are strict on the arrival time of your reservation. The fifteen minute grace period was enforced. Luckily they were still able to seat us with about a ten minute wait. The DJ was great and the music selection was even better. It was a nice vibe for a Saturday and family friendly if you have kids. read more

Food influencer recommended, slightly disappointed. Finally had the chance to try out the weekend brunch I've been seeing on TikTok and was truly unsatisfied with the dishes I ordered. The brunch is $42 per person ($14 for kids) for a 2 hrs limit. The portion size is moderate and not excessive. There's a variety of options on the brunch menu. I ordered Catfish and grits. The grits were lumpy. The spinach and artichoke dip tasted well. My favorite dish was the breakfast pizza. The steak option I recommend to avoid. It was overcooked and looked rubbery. Nice place with a variety of dishes. I ate the crispy tuna tacos and tried some of the pepperoni hot honey pizza. The pizza was pretty good and the hot honey flavor was nice and not too strong or sweet. The tacos were decent, but not what I was expecting. The description was "four crispy tacos, guacamole, sriracha aioli, Mexican street corn." The tacos were actually raw tuna in a light, crispy taco shell with slices of avocado on top. Nowhere in the description did it mention that it was raw, poke-style tuna, and I don't consider plain avocado slices to be guacamole. Luckily, I like raw fish and still enjoyed my meal, but I think Matchbox should really mention this on the menu. Something to keep in mind if you're considering ordering the crispy tuna tacos! We opted for a la carte vs the buffet/bottomless brunch. I was starving and super excited about the chicken and waffles plate. It's a smaller version of the Matchbox in comparison to the one in Reston, VA. The restaurant layout was somewhat cut in multiple sections and the interior felt stiff and dim. Service was good, friendly, and attentive. Not a massive selection of draft beers but good enough selections of beverages for a night out with friends. Good menu with a mixture of bar food and of course pizza. We had the calamari, sliders, chicken salad, all delicious. Overall good experience, just the ambience somewhat of a letdown given its location being right in the center of trendy Mosaic which had probably inadvertently hyped up the expectations of a great vibe. I don't feel like I would come back to this location but certainly will do the one in Reston. read more

My friend and I ordered Miso salmon. My God, what chef would think that tastes good? Did they even try this dish before putting it on the menu?! That was a very bad combination of ingredients. The salmon was sweet, and everything was floating in a lake of some sweet sauce. I wasn't sure if that was an entre or a desert. My friend had to pour a tone of salt and pepper just to be able to swallow that thing as we didn't want to be mean, and send it back to the kitchen. And that was their only salmon option. We ate here when it 1st opened yrs ago and tonight just reminded us why we never returned. Took us calling 2 waiters to find the hostess and when she finally got to the front, she seemed irritated that she had to find us a low top. Tables by us were un bussed and the floor was littered w trash and napkins. That worries me when the areas we see are messy, what would the back rooms be like? Server took awhile to get to us despite it being after 8pm and many tables were empty. When he finally got to us, someone had to get our drinks first. Hubs had friend chicken and I got the fish n chips. It came out so quickly that it was evident nothing was fresh made. Hubs chicken was cold in the center and the coleslaw w my fish was so sour it was inedible. The cornbread was so heavy and thick, even jiffy cornbread was much better. My fish was oily and so fishy that I had to ask for extra lemons to kill the taste, and even that took 5 minutes! Hubs told me to send it back and ask For the manager but I was so done with the place I couldn't wait to get out of there. I mentioned it to the waiter but he didn't even offer to get a discount. I arrived first when me and the bestie had plans to do lunch, I thought it would be packed based on driving through Merrifield and passing the play area (abundant with kids/families) and getting free parking in the public lot required a bit of a search. However, when I arrived, I was able to be sat immediately, and outside which surprised me. My friend arrived shortly after I was sat. The bestie ordered a glass of wine, however after a brief period of time the sever came back and said it could not be ordered by the glass, so my friend ordered something else. No alcohol for me! After awhile we ordered food, I got the Ultimate Breakfast Sandwich, I opted for turkey sausage instead of the regular bacon and sausage that comes on it normally. The sandwich was hearty and definitely filling. I didn't like the lemon aioli that came on it, however outside of that the sandwich was fine, nothing to write home about. I do appreciate that there was a good amount of meat, eggs and cheese on the sandwich, good ratios to really get your bang for your buck. What a disappointment. We came in for matchbox' signature double pepperoni pizza and burgers. I'm not sure what has happened to the quality of the food, but everything was mediocre at best. The pizza was worse than school cafeteria pizza. The center of the pizza was soggy and the cheese had an off putting taste that made the pizza overly salty. The pepperonis were low quality and very thin. For $18, I expected more. The burger was not bad but nothing to rave about. The best part of the meal was the ranch dressing. We ordered a $8 bowl of chili, which was more like a standard cup of soup. The chili came out room temperature and was not seasoned enough. For the price and overall quality, I would not come back. I think Matchbox would be a place I could frequent if only their service was better. I came here on a Wednesday afternoon to eat dinner. I was seated by the host once walking in but I was sitting in the far back. Maybe I should have opted for a bar section but I didn't want to be in the midst of all the noise. Sometimes you just want your own peace and quiet. After seating my server greeted me and I was able to place my drink and my food order ( I looked at the menu ahead ) and was off to a good start. The wait for this took a bit as I waited half an hour or so. I understand pizza does take time to order but my server left me stranded waiting for a bit. Not sure where they went. So a few minutes more, another server comes and ask me if I have been helped yet and I mentioned that my server hasn't came back with the pizza yet. The other goes and checks on that for me and immediately brings it out telling me it's been ready for a bit now. I was so hungry that I didn't want to have a fit about it and was just delighted to see my food. The only issue is that it's lukewarm, and the pizza is cut not in equal parts. Why am I mentioning this in the review? Because you want pizza to be equal slices if you have a group to share with and it'd be weird if you had more pizza than they did. The pizza, which was Sausage + Peppers contained garlic, tomato sauce, hot Italian sausage, roasted red peppers, mozzarella and ricotta. A nice blend of ingredients for a very solid taste. You can't go wrong with this pick. After eating four slices, I waived my hand to get a to go box. My server actually came back and noticed me after so much time passed and they were able to hand me a to go box and the check. My experience was a bit disappointing and I get something may have happened but communication is key. The service wasn't there on that visit but it could have been an off day. Used to love coming to this Matchbox, but after my most recent lunch here, I will never come back! The service, besides the man who brought out the food each time, was awfully slow, lazy and inattentive. Felt like they ignored us on purpose. The food wasn't great, and i'm not sure why my pizza had one, out-of-place slice that was sticking out and larger than the others, and then another tiny slice, but it threw me off - as if they stuck on an extra slices from someone else's pizza. The taste was lackluster, the sauce was almost nonexistent, and the cheese kept falling off. The fish and chips weren't crispy, either. The simple salad barely had any toppings on it, but it was fresh. The best dish was the arancini - nothing bad to say about that. On top of the dirty plates and silverware, with old food stuck on them, the atmosphere wasn't comfortable, either. Overall, I had a really bad time here and I don't know if I can trust other locations of Matchbox, now. read more

The website advertises that kids eat free every Tuesday so decided to take the family out for a nice meal. The two kids ordered off the kids menu and each adult had a full entree. When the bill came out the kids were charged for their meals so I asked why their website says kids eat free on Tuesday. The server claimed that it only applies to the kids pizza, but that didn't make sense because one of the kids was charged for their pizza. I was also confused because there were no other details or explanations about how kids eat free. The server went to talk with the manager and they eventually comped both kids entrees. They said next time it's just the kids pizza. That's fine, but they really need to fix their website then and be more clear. read more

We had 5 adults and on baby went for lunch on 1/19/25. The service was very slow it took two hours and it took over 45 minutes to get our food. It was extremely noisy and could not hear the waitress. We had to ask for water refills multiple times. Ordered the baked chicken which had no flavor whatsoever. Ordered chicken fingers for baby and they were so overcooked the baby would not even eat them! Last, we ordered brownie with ice cream and the ice cream was frozen and freezer burnt. We sent it back and asked for the manager. When she finally came (15 minutes later) to our table after multiple requests she (did not provide her name) just said sorry took off the food and gave us a 10% off for next time. We ordered delivery but I have been there in Person multiple times. This review is for their pizza. A 3 star is generous though their toppings are wonderful. Matchbox cannot cook a pizza crust to save their lives. The entire middle of our pizza fell through because it was soggy and not cooked all the way. When they try to solve the problem with corn meal it turns into polenta. What is wrong with Matchbox and their piazza chefs that cannot cook a crust properly. read more
