We came here w/ a friend for some pizza after a Yelp event. We didn't have to wait long for a table, and once seated our waiter was right on top of getting us drinks. My husband ordered a plain pepperoni, and our friend & I decided to share a prosciutto & fig and chicken pesto. The prosciutto & fig was terrific. Very flavorful, lots of ingredients but not overbearing. The chicken pesto was disappointing. The chicken was dry and the pesto was not very tasty. This restaurant is great addition to the Mosaic District in Merrifield. I've eaten here on a quiet sunday night and a busy happy hour thursday and service was great both times. Its a clean well thought out space with a chic design and atmosphere. The food is phenomenal albeit pricey (expect to spend $25-40 a person for app, meal, dessert and drinks), it's validated by unique flavors and ingredients that come together great. The menu does seemed scatterbrained but it provides a little something for everyone. My fiance and I went here for dinner on a recommendation of a friend. We ordered the chicken pesto pizza and it was delightful. The pizza came out slightly burnt the first time, but the waitress owned up to it when it came to the table. She immediately said that they were already cooking up a second pizza for us and we could start eating the first pizza while we wait. The second pizza was on the house and came home with us. For dessert we got their chocolate chip brownie with chocolate gelato and chocolate ganache. It was a chocoholics dream! Stopped in for lunch with my mom. This shopping area is super close to the Inova hospital... Very convenient. They feature some interesting and special local beers on tap. We each had a salad- baby kale, and panzanella. I had a bacon-free dressing on the salad, and it was delicious. The poached egg on top was yummy, although only slightly underdone, and the sweet potatoes were tasty. The fried croutons were a nice crunchy addition. I found that the salad developed an "earthy" flavor, probably due to the door that kept opening near our table. My mom enjoyed her panzanella salad, which had arugula and frisée with cornbread croutons, tomatoes, and cheese. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly and gave us many tips about the area. Overall, I enjoyed my second trip to Matchbox, but I find their menu a tiny bit limiting. read more

First the good. I've eaten here dozens of times since they opened and the food is always excellent. Chef and kitchen staff put out consistently great food. If the description of the dish on the menu sounds good then you won't be disappointed. The drinks from the bar are likewise reliably good and they do not skimp with the booze. I'm not wild about any of the desserts but I otherwise rate this restaurant a homerun from a palate perspective. On a couple of occasions I've had an issue that bothered me enough to comment on it to Management. So statistically speaking it's rare something goes wrong. But on the three occasions that I've talked to a Manager they have treated me poorly. I'm not cussing at them or hotheaded. I'm just complaining about something that wasn't right with my dining experience. And I've never taken the time to write a negative review until tonight. But since once again Management was neither polite nor accommodating I will share that has been my experience. Tonight's issue was the entire upstairs dining area was empty when I started. Midway through my meal they sat another couple right next to me. So there are over a dozen of tables in this section available. I am the only other diner sitting in the entire section and they sit a couple in the tiny table right next to me. I asked the hostess why she wouldn't sit them somewhere else so we could have some privacy and she said b/c this is where she was told to seat them. I complained to my waitress who said it's a public place and she didn't see why I had an issue. She sent the Manager over who was a petite brunette and she likewise treated me like it is completely unreasonable of me to expect them to give us some space in an otherwise empty dining section. I said why can't you sit them two tables over so we at least have one table buffer between us. She rolled her eyes and said b/c I don't have a server for that table (mind you it's all of six feet away from me and it's a FRIDAY at 5 pm. Not exactly a time I imaging that they're understaffed). Management here has the attitude that we have all the business we need and if you don't like something go somewhere else. And so I will take them up on that from here on forward. read more

I love this Matchbox. I started going here weekly with a group of new mom's. We are not always a very easy table- everybody has an infant so we're up and down to the restroom, sometimes we're rushing to leave, sometimes we're lingering at the table, always want separate checks etc. The service is great and they always make our whole table feel welcome. I have an allergy and they're very careful to accommodate that as well. The food is always delicious and they make sure we're satisfied. Jaime & David are our favorite servers and always come say hi if they're not assigned to our table that day. I always look forward to Thursdays at Matchbox! read more

Went for lunch during the week with my husband a few weeks back. I was surprised by how busy it was for a weekday. It was so busy that our waitress never came over with the sweetener my husband asked for with his iced tea. He ended up grabbing some from a table after the patrons left. Our burgers were good, but what was up with the onion rings? Was that cheese on them? I did not like it, which is sad because I didn't think you could mess up onion rings. My friend and I were having a girls day out, shopping in the Mosaic District for the first time. We decided to have lunch at Matchbox. I had heard great things about the DC location, and I had seen the Yelp reviews for the Fairfax location, so I was eager to try it out. I'm not entirely sure about having to make a reservation no matter day/time. We visited on a Saturday and we wanted to come at noon. When I checked the Open Table reservations, the only time available around that time was 11:15am. So I made that reservation, however, when we got there, it wasn't busy at all and there were other tables available. So I'm not sure what the deal was. We had the following: New Orleans French Toast - my friend had this with a side of bacon and she said it was good Wood-Oven Roast Duck Legs - this was delicious! Arnold Palmer - I ordered the lemonade and raspberry ice tea mix... So good Mimosa - my friend got this, she said it wasn't that great I thought about ordering the waffle but I didn't see that you could order a side of eggs. The waiter was really nice, great service. Well, on a Sunday evening, you will wait, like it or not. I was dreading an extended wait since they told us it would be about an hour. Well, I was surprised when we were seated about 30 mins. later, so the wait wasn't so bad. The food was good, but nothing spectacular. I really enjoyed the food, service & ambience at this restaurant. I was with a party of about 14 and there was no wait, which is unusual for happy hour, so that was a huge bonus. My friend and I branched off to the bar for a couple drinks while waiting on the rest of the party to arrive At the bar, I ordered a makers and ginger, which was tasty, but kind of pricey as expected (they don't have happy hour here FYI). I came here to kill some time before going next door for a movie and I'm so glad I did! It wasn't super busy in there which was nice because we were able to get sat immediately. We got there a few minutes after 6, but our server was kind enough to still let us get drinks at happy hour prices. I got a beer and my boyfriend for some type of bourbon concoction and he loved it! This place is known for their pizza we opted for a chicken sandwhich and massive burger. If you want good service, or just want to be treated respectfully, or just want to be treated like a decent human being.....DO NOT come here. I am just shocked by all the good reviews. I have to say this place is very disorganized. I wouldn't mind the disorganization and the untimely manner it took them, if they just owned up to their mistakes, however the fact that they don't care is what makes me frown upon how they do business. I think the people who had good experiences here happened to get a good waiter or waitress that day. Unfortunately that wasn't the case with me. I went there for lunch and the place was very empty, so that was a good sign for me because I figured I would be in and out quickly. I was wrong. First the hostess sat me down on a table and I waited about 25 min before anyone came. When they did come to pour me water, I didn't see anyone again for another 25 min and this time it was a different person. After that they took my order. 40 min went by and no one came to check or see what was happening. I asked for my waitress and no one even knew who I was working with. I love matchbox and was very excited to know one would be opening at mosaic. Tried it a couple weeks after opening and the food was great. Started off with the Sliders with mozarella and they were very good and juicy. Normally sliders are dry since they are so small but these were juicy and full of flavor, a definite re-order. For my entree i ordered the Lamb flatbread, it was a bit hard to eat since the toppings would fall off if i picked it up but just ate it with a fork/knife. The lamb had very good flavor to it and it came with CHICKPEA fries! so good! I had never tried chickpea fries but they were amazing. The only downside was the service, i understand its new and the servers are learning but then again, im going to assume matchbox does not hire people that dont have any server experience so no real excuse for the lack of service received. The server never even read the specials to us, later we could hear the specials being read by another server to the table next to us. My drink stayed empty for alot longer then it should have as well. read more

When the server learned that I like hot foods, he offered to put some sort of chipotle sauce on the matchbox meat. It was so yummy. I guess I came here for the food right? Right! Ok, so I came with a hangover. And I had their breakfast pizza, which to me is my new hangover cure! It had eggs sausage and cheese...etc and a thin thin crust. My brother would've hated it, but I LOVE thin crust! We also ordered a burger, since everyone raves about the hand made patties. I would have to agree. It's was pretty darn good. The meat was juicy and it wasn't mushed and smushed together like a bologna. My friend had the crab Benedict. Meh. Bleh. Our group of three shared 3 mini burgers, Q Special pizza, the Magic Brownie, and for drinks a peach tea for adults (forgot the name). The burgers would have been totally delish if they were not burned/charred. The onion straws were definitely yummy. We also ordered a side of fries to go with the mini burgers. I was not a big fan of the pizza because the sauce wasn't very robust and I think the pizza could have used more toppings (mushroom and pepper slices were used very sparingly). The Magic Brownie was very yummy. Our waiter offered to make it "special" but adding chocolate chips. I like this addition, but it's not for everyone. The drinks were inconsistent. Out of the three of us, each drink was not the same in taste or strength. Also, if you're not a fan of vanilla, this may not be the drink for you... I recommend the brunch, the drinks are good and decent selection of different types of foods. Expect the usual Sunday brunch crowd, especially rowdy kids and loud babies but that's no matter where you go. The place itself as many of reviewers have mentioned its loud which does not bother me. 3 stars for food- I had heard the hype about their pizza. Pizza is good but not the greatest and the yummiest that I will drive to DC or Merrifield to eat at this place. OR wait over an hour next time to satisfy our craving for pizza. We tried the fire and smoke (vegetarian) pizza. If you like BBQ sauce on your pizza you will enjoy. It is spicy. I personally thought it was Okay. Not sure if it was worth the price to become a regular destination for us, but the food was good. The Ginormous Meatball appetizer lived up to the description, with spicy meat surrounded by a river of delicious tomato sauce. The big breadstick that came with it was perfect for eating the sauce. My friend said the pizza he ordered was one of the best he'd ever had. I was less impressed when I took a bite, but he's more of a pizza person than me. My pork loin was adequate, it a little bland. This review is based on the Spicy Cajun Tuna dish. Oh my goodness. The tuna was cooked to perfection - pink in the middle and slightly gray on the outside, and the risotto was equally as delicious. I would go back just to have this dish again! I took off a star for service. I made a reservation stating it was for a birthday, and the hostess said she'd make a note of it, and that they'd bring out a complimentary dessert on the day of. Not only did they seat us in the back by the kitchen (there were plenty of open seats since it was a Monday night AND I had requested a nice booth at the time I made the reservation), they forgot to wish the birthday girl a happy birthday. Got a chance to see a movie at Angelika Film and my wife and I decided to stop in for dinner after the movie. It was a Tuesday night so it wasn't overly crowded and we were quickly seated. We got a two person booth that was comfy and intimate. We decided to split a few things, a pesto - chicken pizza, mini hamburgers, and a basalmtic vinegar salad. First of all, the service was great. Our waiter was courteous, quick to refill, but also didn't check with us to the point of being a bother. The chicken and pest pizza was, as you'd expect pretty much what it sounds like. There wasn't much of a pizzaz in it, the crust was simple, pesto was oily the chicken was... chicken. It was the simple, and sublte flavor my wife had been looking for. I'd like to give the spicy meatball pizza a try. The Mini hamburgers were great, actually surpassing what I was expecting. There were three, that had a pretty charcoal grill taste to them. We got them with gouda cheese which I thought was great. There were a ton of onion straws on them so no need for a side like fries or anything. Overall the meal was pretty good. The pizza was decent, the burgers were great, and the service was great. I would return (especially to try the meatball pizza!). read more

Visiting from California, an old friend I was with told me that she heard this place is great. I don't eat pizza that often but who doesn't like pizza?? Well first of all, our server was fantastic! Super attentive and checked on us often. Service was A+. We shared a large pizza and we were able to split it into two types of toppings/sauces. Decided to go with Meatbox Matchbox Pizza and the Veggie to complement. We also got fries and we split the cost so it was about $14 each. The Meatbox was fine, it was a bit on the saltier side to me. I liked the Veggie more, but it came with huge artichokes though. The pizza unfortunately didn't stay together. I felt like the toppings were way too heavy for the dough so I basically ate a deconstructed pizza. The fries were good, nothing extra spectacular! My friend and I went on a Saturday and I called ahead and still had to wait 25 minutes. This place was so busy, a line out the door. It has been a while since I went to matchbox, but they added some drinks that were newer to me. The vanilla peace ice tea drink is to die for. Doesn't event taste like alcohol, tastes like peach tie with a splash of vanilla. So good! There is ginger ale which gives it some fizz. We ordered the appetizer, mozzi carozzi (a matchbox fav of mine), and it was delicious. Our pizza came out as soon as we were done with our appetizer (I think the waiter planned that, it doesn't happen very often to me). My friend also placed a to go order and it was ready when we asked for the check. It was also hot and fresh. I will definitely go here again. I got to sit outside on a high table overlooking the fountains and greens. They have done a nice job with space allotted to them. I wonder what they plan to do with the big screen on the Mosaic/theatre wall. Right now it displays mini-clips but that is all. The restaurant inside - I have no clue as I ate outside . Service - very friendly throughout my dinner even the hostess was friendly (as they all should have been ha ha) even though I made my initial visit in my gym shirt. As it was, I simply wore another tshirt with my gym shorts and I still received great service. I wanted to enjoy the beautiful sunny evening and I did. The waitress, Rachel was training a new girl and Rachel was helpful with my order and suggesting a wine to pair with it. She mentioned a Belgium tripel that I want to try as I love those style of beers. I ordered a custom veggie pizza: Requested only oven-bake the dough, tomato sauce, peppers with fresh artichoke, heirloom tomatoes and spinach on top. I think they did cook the spinach but that is okay. The pizza came out beautifully in terms of looks and taste. Though next time I will request double or even triple the amount of veggies as it was a little sparse. I figure this should be fine with them in terms of cost as I do have cheese on my "pizza". Even still, it tasted great and was very colorful with the purple and red heirloom tomatoes that were really sweet and juicy. Both Rachel and the trainee commented on how good it looked. It came out much better with the fresh veggies on top . Also, I wish the crust was thicker -I love pizza crust and this could've been double thickness and still be a skinny crust. As it was, it was good. The wine was an Acrobat Pinot Noir - an Oregan organic red with plum and raspberry "king estate label". No clue what the "prince estate label" would taste like... It paired nicely with the wine and had a nice aroma. I know very little about wine but I do know when I do or do not like it! Finally for dessert I had a nice fruit bowl with strawberries, blueberries and applc slices. Overall a nice meal. My only wish is that it offered 100% organic food but that is impossible to find in our area. Or at least I have not found it yet. That is due to our region of course. Final note, even on a Monday night, due to warm weather it was packed - people were still arriving when i left at 8. I would reccomend reservations in advance for couples or more. read more

The only thing I can say about this place is that it gained popularity by having a trendy, comfortable ,relaxed setting with good mood lighting. They have really cool sitting areas. In the food department, I had the crab and avocado salad which was very bland. I went for another appetizer which in my mind you cannot mess up, well they did. The tuna tartar tasted like corn beef , need I say more. The service was for a lack of a better word ,meh. I will say this , matchbox is a great gathering spot to meet up with friends , have a few drinks and watch some sports at the bar . We have mini trio as appetizer, we love it except 1. Takes more than 10 to come, 2. We ask the Burgers to be medium, but it was well done. Our waiter was friendly, but not particularly attentive. He did add 2nd glasses of ice tea when we almost finished the meal, and asked us once how's the food when the entries are here. My salad is a bit on salty side, but I love their balsamic vinaigrette. The Coppo pizza was special but oily. Curry chicken sandwich is nice. Overall is not bad, just wonder why the kitchen is so slow. We are used to Costal Flats efficiency. We will come back again. This place was recommended by a friend, so groups of us went here during a business trip. We sat at the counter in front of the pizza oven, which made it extremely difficult not to cave and order pizza, although pizza was ordered and demolished by others. I ordered the salmon, which was served with a butternut squash "puree" (was cubed and cooked, so I wouldn't consider that a puree, although it was very good) and a mushroom farro risotto. The portion was huge and I had to temper my eating because we'd also ordered the sampler appetizer which consisted of very fresh scallops, scrumptious crabcakes, and protein-style sliders. That really started off the meal very nicely. Dessert tasted fantastic in the forms of bread pudding and an ice-cream laden brownie. Service was good, and the only funny thing is that we happened to be sitting in the one area of the restaurant that apparently had awful cellular reception. My friend ditched the counter a few times to be able to send and receive texts before realizing that a very long outstretched arm could achieve the same result. I'm not sure why this place is getting such low stars. The one in Chinatown was for ever one of my favorite (non upscale) places to eat in D.C. and this one is just as good. I'm happy they opened one in va! First, there isn't anything on their menu that I have had that wasn't REALLY good. All their pizzas are exceptional (thin crust). I am partial to the chicken pesto. They have a side of brussel sprouts to die for!!! Their brunch is great...not a buffet but so good. I wish they did a buffet, I think id be there every weekend!!! I had the breakfast pizza with Turkey instead and it was amazing and so was they French toast....they use actual baguette which I love...it's a change from the traditional challah bread French toast they serve everywhere. The service is also always very good, the store looks great, nice and clean and importantly, the bathrooms are clean. A clean bathroom is always a sign of a well run restaurant, to me.
