I knew for my first time trying matcha, I should try matcha mood and it did not disappoint! The worker was really helpful in picking out a drink, so I went with the strawberry matcha. The inside was really cute, with a big menu on the wall that depicted different drink options which I enjoyed. The matcha also came in a Valentine's Day reusable cup which was so cute! This matcha place is good for the area. I like how there's a large variety of flavors you can get, so there's something for everyone. Even if you aren't a fan of matcha, they have other drinks as well such as mango. I got the banana one and it was yummy! It's very cute inside and the workers are nice. This place is so cute! The pink/cutesy decor really drew me in and luckily the drinks taste as good as the place looks. I got the kuro mitsu matcha and asked the barista to make it less sweet and she was more than happy to. It was delicious! You can really taste both the matcha and the brown sugar without one overpowering the other and it was not too sweet. You can also tell from the color that the matcha they are using is good quality. Loved this place, no notes. read more

the food we had was really good, and i loved the drink i ordered too. It's a little expensive for the amount you're getting though. The lady that took our order was really nice but also there was like a little kid there behind the counter too that was just like screaming a bunch and it's a very tiny shop so that was a bit overwhelming. There's also really limited seating inside so keep that in mind because when we went it was raining. read more

I tried the Brown Butter Pistachio Matcha with whole milk, yet the drink was not very creamy and was almost watered down. The matcha is there, but it's not strong and does not justify spending $9 for. My friend also got the same drink with oat milk, but that drink was creamier. We asked the worker about it, but they said the difference in creaminess was because of the difference in milk. However, I would expect the whole milk one to be creamier. read more

THE CUTEST MATCHA SPOT TO EVER EXIST!! It's a matcha girlies dream. They have cute little games and so many photo op spots for your matcha drink. They sell whisks and ceramic bowls. The matcha menu is extensive but all the drinks sound so good. My group decided on the coconut, sesame, and strawberry. All I can say is it did not disappoint!! You can tell the matcha quality is better than most places. It wasn't powdery and the drinks weren't sweet. You could taste the earthiness. It was the best matcha we've had in a while. The girl working the register and making our drinks was efficient and sweet. We will definitely be coming back. Black sesame matcha (8/10): very good. I was afraid the black sesame would be too clumpy, but it was mixed very evenly. Smooth drink that went great with oat milk. My only gripe is the prices are nuts. Almost $10 for every drink. We asked for less ice, but the cup still ended up being half ice. Decorations/interior were nice. Happy surprise to find Matcha Mood as I walked around downtown Portland for food. Both inside and outside are adorably decorated with lots of matcha related pottery and goods on the side for purchase. There were so many options to choose from, and I ended up going with the basic option of Strawberry Matcha. Service was quick, and matcha was delish. Wish I can take Matcha Mood back to NC! I LOVE the variety of matcha drinks they offer! So many unique flavors to choose from & not too sweet. I ordered the Ube Dream which was nutty, creamy and overall delicious. There is not a lot of seating and it was very packed when I arrived so it's more of a to-go shop but super cute and aesthetic overall. The workers were so cheery and helpful. A spot my wife and I have been meaning to try and we finally did! What a great addition to Portland. If you are looking for grabbing a matcha then forget about any other spot! This should be the one and only spot you grab matcha from. It's a small little shop but is decorated perfectly and is so inviting!! I usually always have to ask for no sweetener or only 1/4 sweet, but I wonder if it's because they're respecting and using real matcha they aren't using extra sweetners? Arguably the best matcha in the northeast (not including NYC). If you disagree, please send me other top contenders! In my opinion this place is on the same level as some in the Bay Area CA. They have very tasty looking options and I was very happy with the Earl Grey Iced Matcha Latte and the Iced Matcha Latte with Matcha Cold Foam that I tried. The only thing I would've changed is in asking for my Earl Grey Matcha to be slightly less sweet. So if you're looking for a space to sit and work this wouldn't be the place depending on how busy it is. The ladies working were nice and answered questions and also made great recommendations. I'm not sure I ever had good matcha until visiting Matcha Mood. Actually, I would say that I very much did not like it; it always seemed gritty in texture and grassy in flavor. Clearly that's now how it's actually supposed to taste. Enter Matcha Mood, Maine's first matcha bar, and the very place that will also change your mind should you have doubts or previous bad experiences. I wasn't shy about my reservations with matcha the first time I came, and they were very patient, kind, and full of explanations about what to expect from each of their drinks (even catering to my vegan requests). In the end, I chose an iced Kuro Mitso with oat milk (this is a very balanced latte with both a delightful blend of rich brown sugar sweetness and earthy matcha). Immediately this became a new favorite. AND This is one of the best caffeinated drinks in the city. For reference: it was not as sweet as most of what I've had at Starbucks. If you're a person who likes a splash or two of flavored creamer in your coffee, for example, this won't be far off from that. Regarding that distinctive matcha flavor... I didn't really notice it, to be honest! I haven't stopped thinking about it since I got it. If parking was a bit easier and I didn't work from home, I'd probably be stopping at Match Mood at least once a week to get it! Wow. As someone who has long since been obsessed with matcha, Matcha Mood has the best matcha--dare I say, ever? First off, their menu is awesome. This is the #1 best place in Portland to grab an awesome drink!! I am a huge fan of the coffee jelly. I actually order the brown sugar matcha and add coffee jelly, and all I can say is you're welcome... it's a must try! Today I ordered the coconut water matcha which I've had before, and it was just sooo fabulous. The fresh coconut they put in the drink tasted incredible. I am absolutely thrilled that this cute little matcha café opened up on Congress! As an Asian who has felt the void left by the closure of Bubblemaineia for years now, this is exactly what this city needed. I got an iced salted caramel matcha latte, and it was everything I was hoping it would be--sweet, milky, and balanced with a lovely matcha flavor and no bitterness. My sis-in-law got a hot matcha latte and also enjoyed it. I appreciated that you could see them whisking the matcha by hand. i love this place. the decor, vibes, and drinks. i was visiting portland for the week and i love matcha. when i saw portland had a matcha spot, i had to quickly scurry my way here. i have tried the purple matcha, strawberry matcha, and kuro mitsu (did i mention how much i love matcha?). my favorite was the kuro mitsu! the matcha and brown sugar blend was amazing. my bf had the coconut cloud with matcha foam and he loved it. even i thought it was pretty good and i don't really like coconut. the workers are super sweet too i usually saw one person handling the orders and making the drinks. props to her because as people were coming, she was still able to take orders and make the drinks quickly and efficiently. i wish there was a spot like this in nyc! There is parking avail for customers in the lot for 30 mins, we prob waited about 20 mins and crossed the threshold into baked goods heaven. There was so much to select from - we got pastries, cookies, pizza and bread - and we pretty much liked everything. Our least favorite was the morning bun with walnuts - we didn't have it right away so that might've been part of the issue. Just note that the bread served at the restaurants aren't available until 2pm - we were leaving that morning so we weren't going wait for it. We opted for other loaves instead and they didn't disappoint. If you want something yummy and fresh - make sure to stop by here before heading out of Portland. I do wish the setup was a bit more conducive to the big crowds as there isn't much space from the front door to the counter but still a fantastic find!

Scales delivered one of the best meals I've had in Maine. We were seated right along the window…read morewith a perfect waterfront view of the boats and fishing gear on the wharf below. It gave the entire evening that authentic, working-harbor Portland feel while still feeling polished and comfortable. We started with a crisp, refreshing local Belgian wheat beer that was light, slightly citrusy, and an ideal match for the seafood-heavy meal ahead. For appetizers, the grilled octopus was excellent -- tender with a proper char, beautifully seasoned, and full of flavor. It came with pommes dauphine, pine nut and espelette vinaigrette, and garlic whip. There was a light touch of oiliness toward the end of the plate (typical with generous finishing oil), but it didn't detract from what was otherwise a very well-executed dish. The dozen raw oysters were exceptional. All three varieties were local Maine and served ice-cold: Fare Well (Newcastle), Nautical Sisters (Yarmouth), and Weskeag (South Thomaston). I had them with just the mignonette and was rewarded with clean, sweet, briny flavor. These were some of the freshest, highest-quality oysters I've had in Portland. The main courses were the real stars. The Stuffed Lobster Frites was outstanding. The lobster was sweet and perfectly cooked, the claws were pre-cracked for easy access, and the tail was cleanly split with a buttery, herby breadcrumb crust that added excellent crunch and texture. It was accompanied by scallop mousseline and dijonnaise. This is a premium dish, but the quality and generous portion made it feel worth it. Equally impressive was the seared scallops, served in a cast-iron skillet. The scallops had a beautiful golden crust and were cooked exactly right -- sweet and tender. They were paired with crisp corn, applewood-smoked bacon, kale, and roasted peppers in a light, well-balanced cream sauce. This dish avoided the common issue of being overly salty. Every bite offered a nice variety of textures and flavors, and the cast-iron kept everything hot throughout the course. It was precise, thoughtful cooking. We finished with the Chocolate Silk Pie*, which was rich, silky, and deeply satisfying with lovely hazelnut undertones and a crunchy chocolate-hazelnut topping. The presentation was beautiful, and it made for a perfect ending. Service was attentive and professional without feeling rushed or intrusive. The pacing between courses was ideal. Bottom line: If you're serious about high-quality Maine seafood, Scales is delivering at a very high level right now. The ingredients are pristine, the execution is precise, and the waterfront setting (especially from a window seat) adds real character. This was easily one of the best meals I've had in Portland. I'll definitely be back. Highly recommended for seafood enthusiasts, special occasions, or anyone who appreciates a restaurant that respects its local ingredients.

Being a Bay Stater, I was looking forward to the brown bread. It never arrived. No one noticed. My server did not say anything until the end, where I was offered a free coffee and ice cream/sorbet. Insulting does not begin to describe it. The halibut ceviche was delicious. It was briny and salt and tasted of the sea. I loved it. The swordfish was rich, heavy, and overcooked. I am always cooking heirloom beans, so maybe that is why I did not love the beans. I don't think I even ate half of my entree. At dessert, my server noted the missing bread and offered a sorbet or ice cream. However, he offered after I had ordered the strawberry cream puff, so it seemed like it was an option for that, not an in lieu of offer. It was not clear until the sorbet arrived along with my cream puff. The strawberries had no flavor. I took a few bites of dessert and was over the whole experience. My server did clearly offer a complimentary coffee though, which again, was insulting. From what I can tell, the kitchen never saw the mostly untouched food, due to my seat the bar. The server placed my dishes below the bar. However, he didn't ask any questions about why I didn't finish the dishes, so it must have been clear to him. I do wish the kitchen had been informed as well. I have never regretted a meal as much as the one I had at Scales. I was looking forward to a delicious dinner with a few glasses of wine. Instead, I left hungry and sad. Scales is a waste of time and money. It's a definite skip in Portland.

I should have just checked on Yelp since one of my Yelp friends gave this five stars! I have to concur because I stopped her with my co-worker and my husband for a couple of beers and have to say two things: 1) they have a great beer list that rotates frequently, 2) the bartenders are top notch. You know sometimes you go to a cool beer place and it seems like the bartenders want to do ANYTHING but actually give you a beer in exchange for cash? This place is the opposite and it's wonderful. Very helpful with the beer list, suggestions, tastes, etc. They are also quick to offer another beer where as some places it seems like pulling teeth to try to get a beverage. It was lively but not slammed when I was there but I can tell these guys would manage great even if the bar was two or three deep with customers. Yeah, I thing the Mash Tun is one of the best beer bars I've been to and in a place like Portland that is in the top echelon of beer cities, that is an achievement to respect.
