Our Fam @ Matcha Cafe Maiko

THE GOOD ---------------- + Delicious and refreshing soft serve ice cream! ++++ Maiko Special was delicious (even on a 35 degree day). The matcha soft serve ice cream was perrrrrfect. The other ingredients - matcha cake, corn flakes, red bean, etc. - were really nice compliments. ++++ Strawberry Taro mixed ice cream was a solid flavor. Would not have been a typical choice of ours here, but it was for the kids since matcha has caffeine. + Menu has TONNNNNNS of desserts to choose from - soft serve ice cream in a cup or cone, sundaes, shaved ice, tea drinks, floats, lattes and yogurt drinks, which all revolve around matcha or other Asian-inspired flavors like black sesame, ube, red bean and taro. Make no mistake about it though, matcha rules the menu here. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Nada. MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = Even on an extremely windy and cold December Sunday afternoon, customers consistently came in while we enjoyed our dessert inside. It absolutely baffled us at how many people walked in to buy ice cream or a drink. It made us feel good in a way because we figured we weren't the only craaaaazy ones :)

First time visit. I was surprised by a huge menu with a variety items from drinks to sundaes. Big menus overwhelm me but I went in knowing what I wanted - a simple soft serve. They had 4 flavors of soft serve: matcha, taro, vanilla, and strawberry. Unfortunately, you can't do any comb swirls, you could only do matcha and vanilla pairing or taro and strawberry pairing for swirls. I decided straight up matcha. The small in a cone was big enough for two. It was $8 something think and the size justifies the price. The ice cream had deep matcha flavor and it was nice and smooth. My husband noticed that they also offer yogurt drinks by Yonie's yogurt. The same employee who makes matcha items makes it but you have to order it separately from a touchscreen kiosk. My husband is nuts for black sesame and he saw black sesame yogurt drink, so we had to order it. We chose less sugar option. There's also an option to add purple rice, which I guess supposed to give it a rice pudding effect but I didn't opt for that. The drink was kinda weird. It definitely had plenty of black sesame flavor but I wouldn't say it necessarily goes with the tart flavor of yogurt. I think fruit flavor would have been better. It was definitely refreshing though. I did notice some small ice chips in there. So basically it's like a smoothie with ice and yogurt. I don't think it's going to reach the same level of craze as boba tea drinks. While we weren't crazy about the drink, it kind of made us go back to take a sip again and again. I did notice as we were walking outside, somebody placed a full cup of yogurt drink on top of a garbage can. I guess they didn't like it at all. I don't know if I would order another yogurt drink from there but I would go back for some matcha based dessert or drink for sure.

We came in one late night, there was no one in line when we walked in which was cool, then a line formed behind us. We got lucky in that sense. The whole reason we chose this place was for Uber flavored ice cream. Unfortunately the machine for Uber flavor was down so we were sadly disappointed along with multiple people looking for Uber flavor. We settled for plain vanilla, vanilla matcha swirl, and a banana pudding sundae. The portions were very generous. The girl at the counter was very kind and tried her best to get the machine working, but after half an hour of waiting, she said it just wasn't going to work. It was an alright experience, just didn't get what we wanted.

Was a bit disappointed in my recent trip here the quality is going downhill. They only had taro, strawberry, matcha, and vanilla. The strawberry was the only creamy one. All the other flavors were super watered down and icy. The staff here was the only saving grace. Seating is minimal only a bench and four bar stools. You can also order yomie yogurt too. My Yomie yogurt with purple rice was good. Metered Street parking only. No restrooms.

You may want to be extra careful with how milk is stored during the summer. I recently ordered a matcha latte with oat milk, and the oat milk in my drink had clearly gone bad, like REALLY BAD it tasted very acidic, almost like yogurt. When I brought it up and asked for a remake, I felt like my concern wasn't taken seriously. However, the second drink was made with a new carton of oat milk and tasted completely normal, which confirmed that the oat milk used in the first drink had likely spoiled. Please pay close attention to milk storage and temperature control, especially during warmer months. I drank some of the original drink before realizing something was wrong, and I've honestly been feeling a bit unwell since then. I wanted to bring this to your attention so it can be addressed and doesn't happen to other customers.

    Very good eatery.

Returned to this happy place for another slice of heaven. I'll always appreciate their late closing times and quick serving staff. During this visit, I ordered the Vanilla/Taro soft serve and it was wonderful. One of the best things about ordering here is, that I can enjoy every spoonful at the Be Fort Lee Park, a block away. I will always enjoy having dessert at Matcha Cafe Maiko and highly recommended it to every Yelper.

I don't know what a taro is, but it makes delicious ice cream with hints of vanilla. This was a surprising hole in the wall with great options. It's a bit pricey but was worth trying something new. The address had it listed on the wrong street for some reason so we had to walk around for a while to find it.

Shame on all of you who think this is ceremonial grade matcha. Lol, just kidding :-) Welp. I've been here before when they first opened a few years ago and their soft serve ice cream was SO GOOD. I recently visited in hopes of enjoying it again. And let me tell you... the difference in quality from back then to now is like day and night. I ordered the Matcha/Taro soft serve in a small cup ($7.50) and to my disappointment, it was a waste of calories on a cheat day. When I order anything matcha flavored, I'm expecting that distinct bitter, earthy taste. None of that oversweetened bs. The flavors were VERY SUBTLE. I barely tasted any taro or matcha. It was so subtle that I was basically eating dense whipped cream. I was expecting bold and rich flavors (especially from matcha), but they were weak. The soft serve was also very icy! It lacked that light, smooth, and creamy texture. For the price, I really expected better. Sad to see that the quality has gone down. I know, I know. I should have asked for a sample before buying, but I was overconfident that it would taste amazing since I had great experiences here in the past. Well, the service was quick. You can order on the self-service kiosk or with an employee. They let you sample any flavors. The store is tiny with very limited seating. They have a table near the window with four stools. It's located on a busy street in Fort Lee, so it's street parking only. They do have a lot of other options and flavors on their menu like hojicha, sundaes, shaved ice, and lattes. But I don't think I'll come back, especially with their high prices and small portions. $9 drinks and $11 sundaes? Yiiiiiiikes.

Small store with very limited seating. They have a table near the window with some stools. There are some benches outside as well. And then there is the standing in the street option. Very limited street parking considering it is on a busy street in Fort Lee. Tried the matcha and pinkberry option and it was alright. I have had better elsewhere...

Came here a few times. The service is pretty good, place is small but kept clean. The matcha soft serve is great.

    Dessert of the summer
    David H.

When we drive by this place, the benches outside are loaded with smiling people eating ice cream. So we decided to join those people. The menu is fairly large with the star of the show "Matcha" in many forms. Shaved Ice, Soft Serve, Parfaits & Teas, Lattes/Frappes/Floats etc. But something else caught my eye: *Banana Pudding Sundae*......I Think (It's not on the web-site). Basically it was a layer of vanilla soft serve topped with banana pudding with crushed vanilla wafers. This was probably the dessert of the summer. The banana pudding puts "Magnolia Bakery" to shame. It was so,so,so,so good. Next time I'm going to ask them to omit the soft serve and double up on the pudding. You'll see...you'll all see.

    - Pretty busy on a very chilly, windy December afternoon, with a steady stream of people coming in for ice cream and drinks - Friendly, welcoming staff - Separate ordering systems that didn't quite make sense: a kiosk on the side for drinks and a pad at the counter for ice cream - Seating is limited, with four bar stools by the window, a small bench for two along the side and a bit of standing room that fills up quickly - Space is clean, modern, and simplistic, but feels more like a quick stop than a place to linger--especially given the tight layout and constant foot traffic - Mixed feelings on the ice cream: Strawberry and Taro swirl soft serve was a letdown--icy instead of creamy, overly sweet, and lacking depth of flavor; Maiko Special was slightly better, featuring creamier matcha soft serve, though the flavor was still on the mild side--I did enjoy the added crunch from the corn flakes and the soft, moist chunks of matcha cake, but was very disappointed to find only ONE tiny mochi ball and no sign of the Japanese chestnut mentioned on the menu

Soft Serve Ice Cream Cup with mochi
    Jenny H.

Came here for dessert after dinner. Immediately walking in was quiet on a Thursday evening. Done matcha and their soft serve is what they are known for, decided to go for small cup swirl matcha taro soft serve with mochi. The staff was patient and took our order after few minutes of waiting. The place is small with a counter and about 4 stools. Our orders were quickly made and delivered. Overall loved the soft serve. The mochi was too soft for me, not my favorite. It was a good try. Unless I'm in the mood for matcha, I probably would visit some place else.

I would say Service is pretty nonexistent as you order on the counter and you see yourself with no waitressing. The cashier lady was also pretty rude and not accomodating to my request (make my drinks less sweet) so they lose a store for that. Atmosphere is cute and vibes are great, definitely has modern and traditional Korean vibes. However, I would not say that this is like a traditional tea house? Having been to A LOT of tea houses in Korea, their menu and concept is definitely far from what a traditional teahouse is like. For instance, a traditional teahouse would have assorted rice, cakes and traditional, Korean desserts, however, I feel like this place used modern French pastries, and put a Korean twist on them, which I would say is not very Korean in reality. Baked goods were OK. It tasted stale. Losing a star for that as well.

The shrimp pasta had good flavor but the portion was way too tiny. After only three or four bites, it was gone. There were about 4 pieces of shrimp in the entire dish and they could've added more pasta, given that it's not an expensive ingredient. The tonkatsu was also underwhelming. It was a small piece served in a large container that made the portion size look even more skimpy. I was also disappointed in the tteokbokki. It was mostly sauce with no egg and only a few pieces of fish cake, again served in a container that was far too large for the amount of food provided. The kim-ma-ri pieces were fine but also very small. Overall, the meal was underwhelming. For a total cost of nearly $50, the quantities were just way too small.
