I would have given this place five stars but for the run-down nature of the restaurant (especially the outside patio) but the food was delicious! Will definitely return! I had the "bento box" which included miso soup (yummy), four slices of spicy tuna roll, one piece of sashimi/rice tuna, and a piece of tempura shrimp, accompanied by several tempura vegetables. All of it was to die for. My companion had the lemon salmon roll with avocado. Very good! We had three glasses of wine between us and the warm brownie with ice cream, and it only came to about $80. This is one of our highlights every time we make it out to San Antonio Del Mar. Steve the owner is always so welcoming and personally comes over to say hello to us. We have lots of favorite spots for breakfast, tacos al pastor, fish tacos, lobster, and even sushi in Baja. The personalized service and delicious sushi brings us back year after year. Live entertainment was a treat and the view surely topped our evening. We always start with Edamame and tried all three this time. (our fave was the spicy) Next we love their miso soup with their dumplings that we tried for the first time. We devoured our Rainbow roll, Spicy Tuna hand rolls no rice and a couple of their Special Rolls. Pricing: For the freshness and quality Inhave to say the cost is spot on. However, when in Baja, all expect to pay less, so I can understand why so many comment on the price of their rolls. It's always a treat for us when we have dinner here and expect to pay for what we get. It's an absolute must especially when you get tired of tacos and Mexican food. The first role we got was the dynamite. It was 340 pesos. Pretty expensive for sushi, but we had to give the place a shot. The dynamite role was good yet small for the price. The waiter was great and the sake was hot. The second roll was the crunchy crab, and it was pretty disappointing. The rice was clearly old. There was imitation crab inside the roll and a couple of skinny legs sticking out of one of the rolls. It was very unappetizing. I really wanted this place to be great. I'd love to have a go to sushi restaurant in Rosarito. We just love sushi. There were approximately 8 to 10 workers in the restaurant/Play bar when we arrived and we were the only two people there. Yet it took 20 minutes to receive our sake and 30 minutes to get the first roll. There was no indication why it would take this long. There is an outdoor eating area, but it was too cold on this day to be outside. We sat in front of the windows that overlooked a couple row of houses and then the ocean. You'll have to try this out for yourself, unfortunately our EXPERIENCE less than we expected. I wish you luck in your experience. And I hope the restaurant continues to improve. Mata Ashta is one of my favorite local spots to hang, get some good food and enjoy the sake bombs I'll most certainly regret in the morning. I don't like seafood (I know, I know) and therefore am not a huge fan of sushi (I knooooooooowwwwwww) but if you're anything like me (C'mon, I know you're out there) you're always on the lookout for spots your fish-eating friends will enjoy but you're not stuck with a plate of fries (that also taste like fish). And Mata has OPTIONS! Fried rice? Check! Ramen? Check! Chicken Teriyaki? Check! Veggie rolls? Check! So many choices and you really can't go wrong with any of them. My sushi eating friends all love the sushi here and always talk about how fresh it tastes and how big the portions are. If you've already stuffed your face with tacos, no fear! They have a full bar complete with sake bombs, artisanal beers and your favorite tequila. If you're there in the day, soak in the gorgeous ocean views and take some envy-inducing, insta-worthy photos. If you're there in the evening, they almost always have live music from really great local singers and bands so put your dancing shoes on and hit the dance floor! The service first: the servers are friendly and do their best to accommodate a sometimes full restaurant while being seriously understaffed. The owner of the place is very arrogant and not very personable but that's just my opinion. The food: the sushi is very good. Very fresh and well made. They also have some original ideas on their menu which is good. However, the prices are really high for the area and the menu is limited. After going there on a regular basis we got bored after a while and asked the chef to be creative and give us something new not on the menu. Something we've asked other chefs plenty of times and we're not usually disappointed. This time we were. It was obvious that they simply remixed what was on the menu. Either the chef is not given creative license or he's very limited in training. Either way we have stopped going so often and now only go maybe once a quarter when we've missed their menu enough to give it another try. read more

After 4 days of tacos and lobster and meats I was ready for something more familiar, rice. I eat sushi once a week back home and figured it was time get back to normal. Unfortunately we could not walk here as the toll road is not lit, despite being just a mile away. Uber to the rescue. Not to be confused with the taco spot next door by the same name this is the building on the left. It looks expanded since the door is not exactly centered, you walk by the glass and see everything just to get to the door. Live music, a separate bar, a half outdoor patio that needed heat. The bathrooms to the left. The open kitchen works, but was definitely not it's original design or purpose. Some hand rolls (nothing crazy) since we came here mostly for some warm ramen and something with rice. The California roll was good, the spicy tuna roll was not mashed at all, basically julienned topped with sambal. The soy sauce was good. They had a good beer selection, wine, sake, spirits (sans American whiskey). The prices were good, not great, sushi is one of those products that hold regardless of the economy. The ramen was bland, I regretted my decision when I saw hard bricks of ramen in a bag. It was basically maruchan ramen, but the broth was watered down. They did top it with a proper egg, corn, sprouts. I really liked the mushrooms, but the pork was fried and ultimately got soggy/chewy/fatty. Not chashu pork in any sense. Once we tried it we ordered a few more rolls as even though the warm broth was what we were looking forward to, it wasn't worth filling up on that. The Philadelphia roll had a nice and firm salmon which I liked a lot. The sake was good as we also got something with more heat(unknown chefs choice roll). The service was meh, the server had an attitude. The band was ok, nothing amazing, the crowd was cool, lots of couples, small families, a few kids, a few small groups. It's ultimately not a place I'd come back to, but try finding anything Asian open on a Sunday, semi late. read more

Have been here a few times drinks are good and service is great but the sushi is lacking big time. Also got really sick from some noodles I ordered! I told them it smelled funny and sure enough something in that dish was spoiled, ended up with food poisoning and in the restroom for about two days! Will not be back! Do not recommend! read more

For a sushi place you have to try the boneless buffalo wings. I am dead serious when I say they are the best boneless wings I have ever had in my life. The Ranch could use an upgrade, but the chicken itself is breaded with a sushi style Tempura which is unreal. Just moving to the area, I had a huge desire to find my local sushi bar so I can pony up and get my fix. Good thing Mata Ashta is next door. The service here is impeccable and the fish is amazing. They make quality rolls with some other options for the non sushi eaters so my wife and I find ourselves here frequently. This location is perfect, nestled right above the water with amazing views, great food and amazing staff, I hope to see Mata Ashta stay around for many years to come. My friends and I were in TJ to volunteer and found our way down to this delightful place. I had no idea there was a sushi place in Baja but it was great. The staff was attentive and funny and spoke perfect English even though most of us spoke Spanish. The tuna sashimi, miso soup and octopus and shrimp dishes were all tasty. It was a fun end of our day to teach the bartender how to make a skinny margarita (bc they didn't have agave- there are other tricks!) I read so many good reviews but honestly was not the best place. Luckily we were the only ones in there an hr after they opened because there was only like 5 tables. Things that we wanted from the menu they didn't even have available. Very unimpressed by the yellowtail sashimi. Caterpillar roll was like sushi you buy at the food stand at your local mall. Nothing great. Definitely not worth the price. View was ok. Would have helped if the glass was clean. And they don't take credit card payments even though Yelp says they do. Smh read more

The freshest fish I have ever tasted .. the dressing was great and the portion size was perfect. The ambience was chill and relaxed and a live band was there ... very good music. We came with a group of 6. So after the kitchen closes they have tacos freshly made outside so we all ordered tacos ... they were mind blowingly delicious ! Fresh hand made tortillas and flavorful carne Asada! The salsa was fresh and spicy and they put beans in the tacos ! I got 2 and they were pretty filling and good sized ! I'm giving more than one star only because the service was courteous. Our experience was very poor. The outdated and dirty look is not the biggest problem... We paid a huge bill for tiny trimmed portions of sushi. Everything was charged in dollars when the place is in Mexico, which is totally illegal, besides the exchange fee to pay in mexican pesos was way too abusive. They are misleading people with good pictures of a place you won't find upon arrival, and delicious food you will never enjoy, so unless you're an old, alcoholic, lonely and careless old American, this is not a good place for you. read more

Ate here last Saturday evening and the experience was good. This place is comparable to an average sushi place in the U.S. The service was good and they are a little short staffed if it gets busy. The view of sunset was nice however bring sunscreen and sunglasses on a hot day. There are no tinted windows or nice blinds if you sit outside; its just sun and your face. Seating was uncomfortable and the restaurant was almost the same price as US sushi places. 10-20 dollars a roll that was a little unexpected. Also I took an UBer here and dont recommend doing that it is far from any major city and was difficult to get back to Tijuana. Love it, I have been a local for 18+ years, and i really felt I would NEVER get anything that was even close to Sushi again (without going back to the US). But Mata Ashta has proved me wrong, it is a real Sushi bar, not a local version of what some one thunk a Sushi Bar is! Real fresh Sashimi, Yellow Tail, Unagi, soft-shell crab, sea scallops, and more. Most locals restaurants only serve Tuna, shrimp, Green Mussels and FAKE Krab! What I really liked was the live 60's 70's comfort music! The owner is a from the US and he built it with his Japaneses wife, the cutters and cooks were trained by a real Japanese chef, not a YouTube Video! They also server great steaks and chicken for those in your party that are not into Sushi, so it is a place for all to try. I understand that a lot of these Review are written by people that have a vested interested in the restaurant they are writing about, I have none beside I really enjoy eating there, and I what it to do well.
