I have had problems with my old Toyota 2004 Prius..I first went to the Toyota Dealership in Manhattan Beach who quoted me an exorbitant price just to look at the problem. That is when my neighbour and friend referred me to Master Tech..I immediately made an appointment for 9am the next morning with Herbert Mejia and left the car there and returned home by bus..Then he called me in the afternoon and told me the car was ready. Like everyone says "Herbert is The Man" It's true... nicest most honest guy in the business. I'm sold. I brought in my old workhorse 2004 Honda Accord commuter car for the 120,000 maintenance. Got spark plugs, oil change, tire rotation... etc. I also asked Herbert to inspect the whole car and look for anything bad. He was awesome... he had about 6 suggestions on the most detailed things.. I went to see Herbert twice, but he turned me down twice (oil change) cuz he seems so busy and his place is pretty small next to a Star qualified smog inspection station. So he recommended I go to them since I needed a smog certificate for my car also. So I gave him a 3-star for not making an effort the 2nd time for my oil change. I suppose you have to be there first thing in the morning. On Saturdays you need to make an appointment. UPDATE on my review: make an appointment before you go! I did like how he was able to point out any other issues with the car just so that I am aware. He went on the explain how some stuff you should probably repair soon, and others I can get away with leaving it as it is. I have been in search of an honest, reputable mechanic for my "07 Audi Q7, and have been unsuccessful until now! I called and made an appt based upon the Yelp reviews. My appt was today at 8:00am. I arrived a couple minutes early and they were expecting me. I had an oil change, engine diagnostic and full inspection today. I also had a ringing noise under the hood and an issue with a brake light socket. Herbert took the truck for a test drive to assess the sound issue. They completed everything we discussed and he gave great advice on how to take care of the items on the list from the results of the inspection. I took my car to him and he checked it and after being done he told me what was wrong with it and how much parts and labor would cost but then he said, I recommend for you to just get another car, this car will just give you more problems and you will just waste your money, even though he knew that by telling me this I would not fix my car an get rid of it instead and he would loose money by me not fixing my car, but like he said "I just want to be honest with you" I said I would think about it for a couple of days, and sure enough he was RIGHT! two days later something else broke in my car! so now I'm looking for another car. I have a 2013 Chevy Equinox that had recently started struggling at idle and would make an odd noise during acceleration. Eventually a check engine light came on and I used my OB2 scanner to check code and started googling the code and changing parts out on my own trying to fix it. I spent like $150 at AutoZone changing spark plugs and some other stuff. After failing to fix it on my own I yelped mechanics in Torrance and Herbert's shop came up as number 1 with the wave of great reviews. I hit up Herbert through yelp and he responded pretty fast, I scheduled an appointment for same day later that afternoon. The best part was Master Tech offer's a free diagnosis, so Herbert started doing his thing and eventually realized the car was incredibly low on oil (different convo will need to be have with the provider who did my last oil change). I had told him all the things I thought it could be but he gracefully explained how he was able to knock things out as culprits based on his experience. For example I thought it could be the fuel pump but he said the engine roughness wasn't consistent enough to be the fuel pump. Essentially, his experience quickly made him turn to the oil and realized the bad situation after just a 5min test ride on my car. I never thought to check that because I had an oil change done on it really recently (again, somebody getting an earful tomorrow). Oil change made the engine roughness and weird noise go away. Although I'm pissed at myself and embarrassed for not even thinking to check something so simple as the oil, I am glad an oil change was all it took to get it back to normal. Best part was Herbert was super personable. He printed out some pictures of my car engine and explained and pointed out the specific component that was making the weird noise and causing the engine to run rough, and explained how it can potentially require replacing it if the lack of oil makes it go bad (hoping it wasn't the case this time). We chatted it up for a bit and got to hear how he started his shop and of his experience as a tech. I would highly recommend anybody who wants an honest dude with lots of experience to Master Tech. read more

Herbert-the manager/owner helped me out to fix my F-150 Ford truck after Firestone charged me $100 a for a diagnostic check and then told me they did not have time to procure the parts that were needed for the repair. Stay away from Firestone. They may be good for tires and oil changes but that it. I am a senior citizen. I went to this place to have a new driver's side mirror installed. I brought the part with me. It was brand new, in the box. The guy in the office was very busy texting. But we agreed they would install the mirror. We also agreed on a price. I walked down to Norm's for lunch. When I returned, they had taken the back of the old, broken mirror, and put it on the the new one. I thought it odd, because my passenger mirror was already replaced, and it was black. So now, I had one gold one, and one black one. But OK, I figured. It's an older Prius. When I took my car to the car wash, the back on the new mirror fell off. Probably, because they had glued the old back on the new part. When I returned, I started to explain, and the man cut me off, and told me, "I know the history." This guy accused me of lying! He said they had replaced the passenger side mirror! (I had taken that one to a local shop on Artesia, at an earlier date.) When I got upset, he looked up the transaction on his computer, and saw that, indeed, it was the driver's side mirror they installed. He told me then, I should "calm down." That he was "only trying to help me." He also had the nerve to say that "Only Toyota mirrors come with a back." I corrected him, of course! If you buy an after-market one, it comes with a back, black, and it even states you must paint it if you want it a certain color. He went out of the office. I asked a male customer if they treated him well, and he said yes. If you are a woman and or senior, please beware of this place! He tried to pull a couple of fast ones on me. They put a black back on it now. Will it come apart? Time will tell. Too bad they didn't just do the job as agreed, in the first place. This was not a pleasant experience. He upset me. Dishonesty doesn't pay. Nor does treating your customer in a rude manner, and assuming because the customer is female, she will believe ANYTHING. read more

Herbert is honest, informative, a good listener, and takes pride in his work. Just one of those is difficult to find in a mechanic, but all four under one roof? Exceptional. He used to be a repairman for Toyota for about 20 years, I think he said. He clearly knows his stuff and talks straight with no over-sell. I recently bought a 2001 Camry and took it to him for an inspection and advice about servicing. He listened carefully to my rambling description and made two needed repairs, both very good value and well done. I also have a 2015 Forester that had a scraped bumper (it's too soon to live with it), and he has just repaired it after 3 days. His quote was very competitive and great value, from what I discovered by doing some research. The result is outstanding. No two-tone bumper repair; it genuinely looks as good as new. I tried another local repair shop that also has high reviews on Yelp: Performance Plus. They're good, but they don't listen as carefully and weren't as informative -- and they don't take reservations, so I was turned away three times. I got tired of that. Glad to be able to remedy that problem at Master Tech. I'll definitely be taking my cars back to Master Tech for servicing -- but hopefully no more body work. read more
