Herbert is honestly the best mechanic I have ever been to. He's not only a master technician. I'm pretty sure he is a magician as well. Six months ago, the brakes on my 2001 Prius started giving out. I would press it all the way down and it would not start. It was scary as fuck. We took it to my family's known mechanic, and he said that he couldn't do anything for us. He advised us to go to the dealer and knowing them, it would cost at least $2000. I waited a while to save some money, and I found Master Tech on Yelp. My family still against going to new mechanics but I sure proved them wrong. Mind you, there are very few places that still work on the first generation Prius to do their problems. Herbert helped me out as soon as I walked in the office. He gave me a free diagnostic and at the end of the day, he told me what needed to be fixed. So grateful to have found this shop. Herbert is an honest business man and that's a rarity in his line of work. My car broke down on PCH and it was after hours. But I took my chances and had my car towed to his shop, planning to return when it opened the next morning. He could have charged me a ton and fixed my car, but since he's worked at car dealerships in the past he knew the parts were covered in my warranty, even though I was past the 60,000 mile limit. It would have been easy money for him, but he chose to refer me elsewhere. I went to him a second time after the car dealership pointed out another "issue" they recommended I get fixed. Same thing. Herbert could have taken the business for himself, but he inspected my car, sprayed some lube on it and sent me on my way. Said to come back if the squeaking noise returned. And it hasn't since! Excellent place to go! Very reasonable prices for parts & labor, and a honest, skilled master mechanic who will do only what is needed to fix your car. He has over 28 years experience. Herbert took care of my wife's Scion which needed a wheel bearing replacement. He's really good about educating customers on their cars and showing them the process on how he plans on fixing them. He showed us the wheel bearing, which was indeed seized, showing us also that the hub was fine and didn't also need replacing. That kept our costs down too. We have been going to Herbert and his team at Master Tech for years and are so thankful to have found them! Herbert may be one of the last honest mechanics left! Just one example, is that my son's window wouldn't roll down and then his AC stopped working. He went to a mechanic and was quoted $2000 saying that he need a motor for the window and a new compressor for the AC. We got him to bring his car to Herbert and we told him what was quoted. Well, it ended up costed us ZERO dollars! There was a hidden child lock on the window and a blown fuse for the AC!(and there was a new fuse in the glovebox) This is one example of the integrity with which they run their business. My 97 Honda kept stalling when going fast and slow. First mechanic I took it to in El Segundo told me he couldn't recreate the issue. In fact he said wait till it stalls then have the tow truck bring it. I did just that to have the same mechanic in El Segundo tell me once again that he couldn't recreate the issue. Finally he explained that he only had one guy working with him so he didn't have the time to drive it around long enough to recreate the problem. I wish this mechanic in El Segundo would have tole me tha first. Master Tech on the other hand took their time to figure out what the problem was. At first they replaced the distributor cap and rotor. When I took the car home it worked for about a day and then stalled again. I had to wait for a while before starting it. I was at least able to drive it back to Master Tech. When I drove it back the second time they completely replaced the entire distributor. They told me take it home for a few days and make sure it keeps working before you come back and pay. I did that. Car still works. I have an older Saturn (2001 SL2) and in the past, less experienced shops have not been able to properly determine the work needed for the issues I was experiencing. Just want to rave about Herbert and his team for a min. I have been going to Herbert since my kids were in their car seats (7 yrs and still going strong). I have recommended him to numerous friends who have ended up sticking with him as their trusted mechanic. About a month ago my best friend brought her son's Honda Accord to him for a power window issue. They were quoted some 300 bucks from another place. Herbert ended up calling my friend saying that the power windows' lock button was on. WHAT? They were gonna get screwed by another place had they not gone to Herbert. Herbert is the man!! Usually only visit the shop to get my routine maintenance done... Took the car in not too long ago and got my brakes serviced, Herbert was straight up and told me the rear brake shoes still had a good amount of life left. He cleaned them/adjusted them and sent me on my way.. Fast forward my car starts acting up, I call the shop and set up to drop off my car... I had my car towed here after it died unexpectedly. After chatting with Hebert for a bit about family, career, and life in general- I immediately trusted him and thought I had just found my new "forever mechanic". I even called my boyfriend excitedly, telling him about this new gem I found. God, I was so naive. Herbert mentioned on the phone, and in person, that he doesn't charge for diagnostics. I didn't even ask, he just volunteered that info. The next day, he calls to let me know my alternator and battery are both shot, and also that there is an unknown electrical issue that isn't allowing the car to start. He needed more time for diagnostics, which was totally fine. That was on Friday, they're closed weekends, then called me Tuesday with an update. He still didn't have firm answers but wanted to "start somewhere" by replacing the alternator, battery and fuse box for $1800 (cheapest option with used parts). If that didn't work, I'd also need a new computer. He mentioned there was a recall out on the FUSE BOX, but said the dealership wouldn't cover all of this under that recall, so it wasn't worth going to them. I didn't feel good about spending $1800 with no guarantees, so I called the dealership to see if I could at least get my fuse box replaced under them, even if that meant having to tow my car back and forth. After hearing what happened, they said it was likely the alternator that blew everything out, because as it turns out, there's a recall out on the ALTERNATOR... meaning it would ALL be covered. WHEW! Sooooo. Maybe it's not Master Tech's responsibility to know which recalls are out on what cars. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they weren't trying to pull the wool over my eyes. But here's the problem I DO have. I called to let Herbert know what the dealership told me (silly me thought he'd be happy and relieved), but instead, he was really peeved and said it would be $190 for diagnostics since they spent "4 days" on it. When I mentioned it being free, he said "NOT ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTICS". I mean... is that not the most epic bait and switch? Tow truck arrives much earlier than expected, I hadn't yet called Herbert with payment, so they tell me my car is being held for an "outstanding balance" (insert eyeroll here). I called back to make the payment, and Herbert, still very short and abrupt, said he released my car and that I could come by in person to pay anytime. My guess is he realized how shady it was, and was ready to call it a wash without having to admit so. I told myself if they called to ask about payment again, I would; but they didn't. So I'll give them that, there's some decency there. TLDR; not as trustworthy as the 5-star reviews lead you to believe. read more

Highly recommend. Decided to check this place out after recently moving to SoCal from south jersey. Herbert (owner) is a true professional - knowledgeable, courteous, and honest, above all else. Diagnosed the engine issue (rattling noise) affecting my 2009 Toyota Corolla in under 2 hours, and repaired the issue within 30 minutes. Literally downgraded the cost to a VERY reasonable fee after recognizing that the issue was not as serious as initially suspected. Also notably took the time to explain the anatomy and function of pertinent car parts and repair performed, using diagrams, computer visuals, and photos taken of my car's engine. In all my years working with various mechanics in NJ, I've never experienced quite this degree of thoroughness. A true professional. I have a 2010 Camry that wouldn't start. I thought it was the battery, my husband thought it was the alternator. I went on Yelp and found Master Tech and picked them because of the great reviews. They are indeed all true! I had my car towed there today and within an hour Herbert (who is VERY nice and informed me he worked for Toyota for over 20 years) called to say it was indeed the battery :-). He asked if I wanted him to work on it and of course I said yes. I'll be picking it up today. Herbert is it.....he really is. There are a ton of mechanics in the South Bay, but none that I trust more than Herbert. Here's the deal, I brought my car in because I knew I needed brakes. I called him in the morning, and he told me to drop it off during my lunch hour. I did just that. He kept it for half a day and executed a full inspection. When I picked up my car at the end of the day, he ran through all of the issues with me, and gave me a full estimate. He then told me what he would do if he was in my shoes. I took his advice and fixed my brakes. I then took the estimate home to think about what I should do. Here's the thing, Herbert could've told me that he highly recommend I fix EVERYTHING he found issue with, but he didn't. He told me "while I'd love the business, I want you to go home and think about it." I really appreciate that. Herbert answered all my questions, guaranteed the work for a year, and he supports the military. He's a great dude who knows his craft. This was the best experience I have ever had with a mechanic -- hands down! I brought my 2004 Toyota Highlander in because the dealer had recommended a number of repairs that would have cost $3,700. Herbert did his own inspection for free and then explained what he thought really needed to be done and why. On top of that his prices were far better than what the dealer was offering and he was able to make the necessary repairs for under $600. Five stars for Herbert! I know there are a couple random one star reviews, but at least give the man a call and listen to him. I had a really simple problem, broken headlight that was technically the wrong one for my car to begin with. The headlight went out when a bad storm in L.A came through back in February so I decided I'd try to get it fixed immediately. Hector's shop was close by to where i was staying so I decided to go see him and see if he could temporarily fix the issue. We talked for a bit and he basically told me that I had the wrong headlights in and that he could order appropriate ones for me and that he'd put them in for me free of charge. He's honestly a really great guy, don't let the negative reviews question his credibility. I enjoyed talking to him both times I went to see him. I appreciated him explaining what he was doing with my car and liked that he didn't just say something, he would show me. Overall, I walked away with bright working headlights that made me feel much more secure! The only thing I'd tell people is that the entrance to his shop is pretty tight on Hawthorne. Make sure you signal and give people behind you time to prepare because you may get stuck in a small line, as the lot is shared with a few other businesses and it's very small. Always look for the pink wall! That's how I know when to turn, there's a pink wall right there that will let you know. read more
