Since moving to NY, I've become a macaron fanatic. On my visit home, I dragged the boy and my sister to find some good macarons in the Bay Area. They've never had one, so I had to make them try it. This review is solely based on the macarons. I ordered a salted caramel and a mango. I actually thought the mango macaron had a nice flavor, and the texture was somewhat light, but still too chewy for my liking. Salted caramel was probably my favorite in terms of flavor, but this one was even chewier and cake-like. For the boy and my sister, they thought the macarons were delicious (the boy definitely recommends the salted caramel), but for me they were okay, but probably the best I've had so far in the Bay Area. Still on the hunt for some Laduree quality macarons... Each is only $1.25, which is pretty cheap. 4 stars for the macaron, but I still give them 5 stars for their mango mousse. read more

Whenever I come back to Berkeley, I make it a habit to drop by Masse's and Love At First Bite (unless it's Monday, in which I don't get to indulge on decadent cupcakes, harumph). My cousin and I stopped by after visiting the cupcakery, so I wasn't quite in the mood for a flavor-packed cake. But I was anticipating their macarons, specifically their Vietnamese coffee, yuzu, cassis, and salt caramel flavors that I fell in love with on my last visit. This time, however, they had switched out their flavors. So I settled for HAZELNUT/CITRON, PINK GRAPEFRUIT, CHOCOLATE MINT, and EGGNOG, $1.25 each. But my cousin said it tasted like real eggnog, so that's good :) All in all, I would recommend the HAZELNUT/CITRON and the PINK GRAPEFRUIT, which I'm adding to my previous recommendations of VIETNAMESE COFFEE, YUZU, CASSIS, and SALT CARAMEL. Oh, and they accept credit for any amount, although they prefer cash for small purchases. UPDATE (8/15/13): I tried two of their new flavors, PEACH SAFFRON and STRAWBERRY BASALMIC. I'm not going to comment on the food because I'm not even sure how it is. I'm going to comment on the people. My fiancée and I went in for a wedding tasting and the woman who was there was absolutely awful to us. We showed up a couple of minutes late and immediately apologized but she repeatedly belittled us for being late. We finally decided to leave given how awful she was to us, but then she chased us out and proceeded to yell at my fiancée some more. What terrible customer service. I admit, being late was not cool, but we immediately apologized for it. No one deserves to be treated the way we were treated. In reading through the reviews, it seems like this is a pretty common theme. The woman clearly has some sort of anger issue. Maybe even a mental health issue. I was on a macaron mission for Valentine's Day gifts the other day and after a 30 minute trek, and a Cheeseboard stopover, I finally made it! I was immediately greeted by two friendly women behind the counter who were ready to help me. The glass case was fully stocked with mounds of candy-colored macarons in basic as well as unique flavors for only $1.25! There were 8 total: vanilla, chocolate, raspberry, mango, salted caramel, lychee rose, green tea, and pistachio/coconut. I ordered 1 of each for 2 gifts I was giving...and a few more for myself. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they offer complementary white gift boxes that you can have tied with beautiful pink and purple ribbons, I've had my share of macarons - my favorites come from Bouchon Bakery in Las Vegas and La Boulange in San Francisco - and these are equally delicious; light, crisp exterior with a chewy center. It's hard to say which place is best because the macarons at Masses are filled with a buttercream type filling whereas Bouchon has ganache and La Boulange has mostly jelly-like fillings. Masse's is definitely in my top 3 now. The baker was out of the kitchen, helping a customer, and I could just tell by his demeanor that he loves what he does and I'm sure his passion (and skills) are reflected in the quality and beauty of all his pastries. Masse's is a cute little gem of a pastry shop and I can't believe it took me 4 years in Berkeley before I finally discovered them! I was looking for a cake to be special for my parents 52nd wedding anniversary and Masse's came through, I got the MANGO MIRROR, Fresh mango, mango mousse, golden sponge cake, mango glaze and my parents loved it and it served 8 of us, and my dad had seconds....the cake went and now they want me to go buy the next flavor, and that will either be Cole's cake or Bella Torta or Tiramisu....I have not decided. As an extra I bought my parents coconut macaroons and they loved it because it was made just like the ones in Puerto Rico!! Yummy! The parking has to be paid $1.50 an hour, it was worth it to me because I was rushing in to get my selection before they closed at 4pm on Monday, they are closed on Tuesday and the rest of the week they are opened until 6pm and then on Sunday they close again at 4pm. There are little cafe tables indoors and outdoors, and your breakfast sweet or afternoon goodie is attractively presented on a silver tray with a glass of water (and two dollops of jam if you choose a croissant). The coffee is also very good tasting, with cafes au lait and lattes having a good milk/coffee proportion and never too hot. Prices are reasonable--cookie and latte will come out to be less than $4. It feels almost redundant to review Masse's (I ate there throughout my childhood), but I realized that if I cared enough to bring back 3 of their little cakes with me across the country, I should write a yelp review. All pastries are great here, but in my opinion, by far the most uniquely special are the cakes (big or little). Raspberry and orange mouse, chocolate ruffle, tiramisu, and blackcurrent are some of my favorites, but they all run to your own tastes. I am an obsessive patisserie lover, and once spent a month in Paris where I tried a different bakery/patisserie every single day. In Paris, the best I found could match Masse's, but even there, none beat it. I will say the customer service varies - I've had by far mostly good experiences, but I appreciate what some of the other reviewers are saying, the service could be a bit more relaxed (and I agree, it would be nice for non-regulars if the prices were clearly displayed). But the quality of the food itself is so high this doesn't warrant taking off a star. read more

Since we wanted to save a little money and also offer our guests some variety, my husband and I decided to have several regular-sized cakes instead of a traditional wedding cake. We scheduled a complimentary tasting at Masse's and they gave us 4 flavors to try. We fell in love with their cakes--not only are they delicious, but also beautiful works of art! We even met Paul, the owner/baker himself, who was very friendly and clearly loved his work. One thing I'd recommend to engaged couples who are considering Masse's regular cakes: try to schedule your tasting in the same season as your wedding. We had our tasting in February but our wedding was in August, so almost all the flavors we tried weren't available in summer since their menu changes each season. They only offer 1 complimentary tasting, so call and ask when your season's menu starts. Luckily you don't have to order their regular cakes too far in advance (they told us 3 days). And if the timing doesn't work out, it's not a big deal. Since they offer mini versions of their cakes, we went back in early summer and just bought a few we wanted to try. For our wedding, we decided to order 6 cakes: 3 each of our 2 favorite flavors, mango mirror and chocolate ruffle torte. (The ruffle torte in particular is gorgeous, with gold flakes sprinkled on top of big chocolate ruffles.) Per the bakery's instructions, we placed our order over the phone 3 days before the wedding. They don't offer delivery, but suggested picking up the cakes a few hours before the wedding and storing them in a fridge or coolers. When I was at the bakery trying to figure out storage logistics and asking the staff about cooler sizes, they helpfully gave me an empty cake box so I could estimate how to fit 6 of them. The cakes were a big hit at our wedding and everyone liked both flavors, with a pretty even split of which was their favorite. Those with a sweet tooth seemed to favor the chocolate ruffle torte, while others who preferred a lighter taste liked the mango mirror better. (As I expected, most of my Asian relatives loved the mango cake, haha.) We overestimated on how much cake we needed for 50 guests, so we actually had 2 full cakes leftover after the wedding. (Not that I'm complaining!) Our friends helped us finish 1 cake later that night, and the last cake my husband and I enjoyed over the next few weeks. read more

Masse's pastries, you've taken a huge mass of my heart. So incredibly delicious - bakeries like these make me want to open up a bakery shop too and become a baker. I got 4 cakes - the Season Fruit Tart, Caramelia, Mango Mirror, and the Chocolate Raspberry Torte. (About $21.50). All of them were oh. so. good. My favorite was the fruit tart. Usually, fruit tarts have a hard cookie-ish crust on the outside, but Masse's was soft and creamy. It had a mixture of both sweetness and tartiness, and the fruits were succulent and juicy. The one that I got had a sort of raspberry tart to it. My second favorite was the Mango Mirror, sweet and fluffy like a cloud. It actually had bits of mango fruit inside, what a nice surprise! Honestly, I really don't know how to describe the four pastries except just to simply say that they were all simply delicious. This place has been on our hit list for quite some time, so I was excited when we finally got a chance to drop in! We were a little full from lunch, so we decided to just get the macaroons. We tried the pistachio, yuzu, and passion fruit. The quality of the macaroons was pretty good- nice chewy texture and good flavors (we especially enjoyed the yuzu!). What really pushed the bar up to five stars for me was the price- only $1.25 per macaroon! Very reasonably priced for such quality goodness! I was fortunate enough to experience not one, not two, but THREE of Masse's wonderful pastries at ONE party! This was truly one of those experiences that just left me wondering what I had done before Masse's came into my life... The Tiramisu was absolutely delectable and gorgeous. The entire round cake was uniquely decorated with ladyfingers surrounding the perimeter, and the top layered with ribbons and scrolls of chocolate! Perfect texture, not too liqueur heavy and just the right amount of mascarpone. The Hazelnut Mousse was just heavenly. Subtle, yet distinct hazelnut flavor, complimented by whole hazelnuts sprinkled atop the cake. The crust added a nice crunchy contrast. Definitely sweet, but not overpoweringly rich - just right. For you Filipino dessert aficionados, it was like a Hazelnut Sans Rival (deadly indeed)! The raspberry/blueberry fruit tart was perfectly light and flavorful (felt light, but that crust must've had a boatload of butter). They had the smallest bunch of red grapes I'd ever seen, adorning the cake - And, despite their small pearl size, they packed a punch of flavor. After wanting to try macarons for years, finally got to get rid of my macaron virginity here. I actually had no intention of coming here (didn't know it existed!), but we parked right in front of it to eat at Cheeseboard and I had to stop by and check it out. Best decision ever, I now have a potential macaron addiction. I got four macarons and a cookie: salted caramel, yuzu, orange, chocolate, and a coconut macaron. The texture and flavor of the macarons was amazing, it's a little like biting into a chunk of fudge, but a lot lighter and delicate. My favorite out of the ones I got was the yuzu and the orange, I think I'm going to try the two flavors I didn't get (mixed berry and pistachio) next time! I saw that they had bigger pastries and cakes, but I was pretty stuffed so I didn't get to try them. They're $1.25 each which I think is very affordable considering how expensive they can be (I think I've seen $2.25 for those quarter-sized ones..crazy). There's a sign that they close on Tuesdays, so pay attention on which day you come. Also, they have a $15 credit card minimum (which isn't unreasonable at all, but if you're just grabbing a few things you might want to bring cash). read more

This is one of my favorite bakeries, ever! Definitely my favorite in the Berkeley area. The shop is small and has a warm, cozy feel. The people who work there are so nice and patient. I've tried three cakes - mango mousse, tiramisu, and passion fruit ricotta cheesecake. Hands down, the best was the mango mousse ($5.50)!! The cake in the middle is soft and moist, while the mango mousse and gelee on top so flavorful!! To top it off, there are chunks of real mango hidden under the top. On my visit back, I decided to give them a try before route to the much missed and favorited Cheeseboard. With our Philz (an Iced Mint Mojito and a toasty Jacob's Wonderbrew!) in hand, we touted our way to Masses for some sweet nommings... Masse's is a tiny little dessert shop with everything from macarons and cookies, to cakes and tortes. They unfortunately we're lacking labels for all their items, which made it difficult to figure out what it was we wanted... but the guy behind the counter nicely explained each of their items. After much circling back-and-forth, we got a Mango Mousse, a Ricotta Cheesecake w/ Guava Glaze, and a Raspberry Chocolate Cake to share. I also picked up a Salted Caramel, a Pistachio, a Black Currant, and a Toffee macaron for the road. - Mango Mousse; great light (almost eggy?) texture, bursting with bright mango flavor. - Guava Ricotta Cheesecake; favorite of the bunch... not too heavy or dense - just the right amount of creaminess, and a lovely burst of sweet/tartness from the guava glaze. - Raspberry Chocolate cake; rich and decadent. sharp tartness from the raspberry but an overall nice indulgent chocolate-y treat. - Macarons; the salted caramel and the black currant we're my favorites hands-down! The pistachio was also quite good, though kinda lemony? and just not as mouth-watering as the other two. The toffee I could have done without. The cakes overall we're very good, worthy of a fine dining restaurant. They all, with the exception of the Ricotta Cheesecake, did lean towards "a bit too sweet" for me, and did get a bit difficult to eat towards the end, even in our group of 4-5... I'd prefer Crixa Cakes over Masse's when it comes down to it. The macarons however, nevermind which flavor, were all perfection! Each had a nice crisp shell with a nice and chewy, but not overly chewy/sticky, bite. The fillings were all creamy and flavorful, each (mostly) complimenting their cookie exteriors. I've never really understood the love for macarons til now... I've tried a few here and there, but they never struck me as anything more than colorful pretty cookies that we're just irresistible to look at, but not so much to eat... Masse's proved me wrong. Ahhh, my love for macarons have grown since I discovered this little shop, right across from the best pizza place ever ... ( CHEESEBOARD, yums). Anyways, at $1.25 each and so many different flavors, it's a good thing this place is not any closer to where I live. Totally agree with other posters. They were busy but several people had already cut in front of me. I realize this wasn't the bakery's fault, so I asked nicely for service. Didn't need to get snapped at by the owner. Won't be back. I never write negative reviews, but her reaction was over the top and frankly pretty shocking. read more

This bakery just lost my business. My neighbors and I always used to come here but the woman answering the phone continues to have the worst attitude. It takes a lot for me to leave, but I won't stand for poor service. read more

Located in the Gourmet Ghetto district, Masses's Pastries was super busy as usual. When we got there, the bakery was so full that the line was practically out the door! (If this isn't an indicator as to how good these desserts are, then I don't know what is!) If there was any downside to this bakery, I would say that it's a bummer that not all of its baked creations are gfree. However, there are still options that us gfreer's can enjoy and hopefully if more and more people request for gfree items, they may start making more! Out of all the baked items that they had, the only gluten free desserts were the pistachio sandwich cake with wild strawberries and pistachio flavored cream, a flourless chocolate cake, and the macaroons (made with almond flour). The macaroon flavors included cool flavors like salted caramel, pistachio, raspberry, and violet! We ended up ordering everything except the chocolate cake since we had tried something similar to it before. Now I am a huge macaroon fan!! I can't get enough of them! :) read more

Their cakes look like works of art and taste delicious. Perfect for special occasions. They will write a message for you on the 8" cakes, even if you are a walk in customer! The mango mousse cake is so light and not too sweet-- I love it even though I'm not usually into that style of cake. I like that they have a lot of fruit/chocolate combos so you don't have to choose between a fruity or chocolatey cake. Only downside is that they can be "short" on the phone, which can rub people the wrong way. read more

This bakery has horrible service. I work nearby and this bakery was a convenient location for me. However, I have always left with a bad taste in my mouth. It all came to a head today, oct 18th, when I attempted to order a mango cake and was berated. She made unjustified claims about me and I left immediately. Upon discussing with my colleagues, they all mentioned they had similar issues with this store. Many felt they have been prejudiced to Asian. We have all decided to boycott and urge others to do the same. read more
