We tried Massa's in Ballwin for the first time and you could tell right away it's a well-loved place. There were people waiting and every table was full. It has a cozy, old-school Italian, mom-and-pop feel, small and intimate with low ceilings and it was decorated so nicely for Christmas. It honestly felt like stepping back into a classic neighborhood restaurant. The host and his wife were the kindest people and made us feel welcome right away. You could tell they truly care about their customers. Since it was our first time, I asked for recommendations and he happily gave several, which I really appreciated. They offer Coke products, bottled beer, wine, and specialty drinks. It's very family-friendly but definitely not a place for large groups since it's a smaller space. We got there right around 6 PM, so we expected a wait and it ended up being about 45 minutes (the host let me know approximately that timing). The parking lot is pretty small, so it did take a bit to find a spot, but it was worth it. We started with the garlic cheese bread ($5.99), which had provel or provolone on top and was really good flavor-wise. I do wish it came with sauce because it's a little thick and dry without it. One thing I loved was that they bring a big bowl of freshly shaved Parmesan to your table with your food, such a simple touch, but it really adds a chefs kiss. I ordered the tortellini (no mushroom or peas to mine-$18.99) and it was some of the best I've had. The meat was seasoned perfectly, the cream sauce was rich, but not too heavy, and I didn't even need to add salt or pepper. With that fresh Parmesan on top, it was perfection. The portion was large. I could've shared this but instead, I get to enjoy another meal out of it. My husband ordered the Cajun pasta ($20.99) and really liked it, though he admitted mine was better. His had a nice kick to it, good portions of shrimp (more shrimp than chicken) and chicken (shredded style), and enough left over to take home too. He also ordered a mic ultra ($4.50). The only real downside for us was that the pasta dishes don't come with a salad or bread, which was a little disappointing, especially at an Italian restaurant, but everything was filling and delicious. Toward the end of the meal, service slowed a little as our waitress was closing out several tables at once, but overall she provided very nice service. Between the atmosphere, the service and food, we had a great experience. We'll definitely be going back to try more! read more

I like Massa's and came to the Manchester location. Service was good and it was full but no wait. House Cabernet is okay and was hoping for a Sangiovese on the menu but it still worked. Mussels were good but I think lacked the white wine aromatic from previous visits. Tuta Mare was really good, rich cream sauce and the right amount of seafood with each bite. Warm bread helped sop up the sauce too. Always a fun place. Wish the Woods Mill location was open too; it was spacious. read more

The food was excellent! Our party of 4 got sat within minutes at 6:30 on a Friday night. Service was excellent. Ambiance was nice with small chandeliers and white string lights throughout the ceiling above. It was a bit loud with all the families and guests enjoying the evening. I felt at home. We ordered a half n half pizza (half Jack's spec & half Al's special) and an Italian Salad w/house dressing last week. I am a very picky-picky pizza-eater. I cannot stand Pizza Hut, Dominos, Papa john's nor Marcos. I can honestly say that Massa's (Ballwin) served us the best pizza I have had in a few years. We rarely order a pick up salad also, but this Italian Salad was sooo good, I could eat it every day. Bravo to the chef and the staff. The chef is outstanding and the staff are sooo nice and helpful and patient with older people. Always friendly, whether you call in your order or dine in. Super nice people. I was trying to find a place to accommodate my family and their appetite and came across reviews for Massa's. Good enough for us to check it out and I'm glad we did. The restaurant is small for sure but it wasn't crowded during the time we went on Friday. We were seated quickly. The atmosphere is a bit older but I wasn't surprised due to the decor. Our server was wonderful and helpful with explaining the menu. Their pasta portions are VERY LARGE. My husband and I ordered the Cajun pasta and omg it was the best. We ordered half toasted ravioli and after the first bite, immediately regret not ordering a full size. One of my boys ordered a cheese pizza which he loved (he loves stl style pizza) and my other ordered a burger. No complaints there. I have no complaints and would definitely return. Next time I'll bring my phone to take pictures. read more

I love this place so much. The ambiance is cozy and intimate with a lot of regulars. I sit at the bar when I'm by myself and it's always good. My personal favorite dish is the cannelloni, but the meatballs, pizza, salad are all delicious. I hear the lasagna is fantastic, the chicken Parmesan is huge, and my favorite "surprise" today was the recommended cheeseburger. It tastes char grilled, it's thick, bun is soft, cheese is provolone. I had the king medallions with blue cheese, they were tender & fantastic as was the Italian salad. If you love old school Italian service and quality food this is your place. I have had the steak specials which I would strongly recommend but the pizza is a hidden gem. It has a very intimate and old school atmosphere that is so hard to find today. Tonight I tried their "Big Al" which is Italian sausage, bacon, and pepperoni. It is a thin crust that you can get either with a provel blend or mozzarella. They get their crusts from a 3rd party but it was was crispy and buttery. Savory sauce that I happen to like personally. Oh and they do blue cheese stuffed olives with their martinis. It has an old school and family feel to it. In my opinion worth a try if you have never been. And again their menu is amazing and you cannot go wrong. read more

The place is tiny and not much seating but it's always packed. It is super loud and not romantic by any means. The bread is french style and slightly toasted, it was tasty. Just plane butter from a package. The caesar salad was very good. Dressing was tasty and had plenty. The meatball wasnt very good. Had a weird spongy consistancy and tasted like Salisbury steak. Broccoli was pretty plane and basic but cooked ok. Wasnt a big fan of the cannelloni. I dont like provel on it and the noodles were too thick since they used lasagna. The tomato sauce wasnt anything special and they used canned mushrooms in the stuffing. I wouldnt eat this again. Probably wont be back. There wasnt anything worth getting again and the atmosphere wasnt enjoyable. read more

We ended up at Massa's on a Friday night because our first choices in this neighborhood were so busy we couldn't get in. We walked in masked (10/1/21) because there is a mask mandate in St. Louis County. Our masks were the only ones we saw the entire time including on the employees. Not a mask to be found. That makes a statement. We ordered a Large Chef Salad with Red Wine Vinegar and Oil Dressing and a Pepperoni pizza. The salad is delicious. It's in my top 5 favorite salads in St. Louis. It's always crisp and fresh. The cheese blend is creamy and they cut the salami in little squares and the salad dressing is that sweet and light St. Louis style dressing. It makes for a great salad! The pizza was just fair. First of all who triangle cuts a St. Louis style pizza? It deserves a square cut. Second their crust always has a lot of flop instead of being cracker crisp. The service was friendly and speedy enough. I hadn't been in here in over ten years and it has the same tacky crystal chandeliers and sconces and loud wallpaper. We started off with Caeser salads, they were good and flavorful. I wish one of us had gotten the house salad just for comparison. My husband got the Modiga and said it was excellent. He liked the red sauce on his side pasta as well. I ordered the Bleu Medallions and thought the dish was unique. My side of white pasta was delicious. Sometimes white pasta can be bland, but not here. The bread was good and fresh. I was extremely impressed with the wait staff. They were very friendly and kept our glasses full. 9/1: Wanted to go back this coming Saturday, but this time they refused to take a reservation. Since their Yelp page says they take them and they took one in July for us, I was quite surprised. We really enjoyed our last visit so I took a chance that the Town and Country location might not be doing the same so I called. Sure enough, they gave us a reservation! The Ellisville Massa's or Yelp should fix their listing to be accurate, but we're looking forward to dinner at Massa's - just not the one closest to home. read more

I came home from work and the wife says we are going out to supper. Sounds cool to me. We met up with her brother and came to Massa's. This location has been here forever. And forever I never gave it a thought. My wife even had a coupon gasp!! I ordered the Combination. Which is ravioli, penne pasta, and spaghetti with a baked sauce on top. For fun I had two meatballs added to the dish. The meatballs were not huge more like a golf ball size but tasty. This dish is served very hot which was perfect for a cold night. I really enjoyed the dish. Mrs. K. ordered pasta with chicken in an Alfredo sauce. I had a taste and it was chicken in an Alfredo sauce. Nothing that would rock your world but good solid dish. The bill came to $58.00 for us and no booze. What ran the bill was an order of garlic cheese bread and salads. I had the Italian salad which consisted of greens provel and a wonderful dressing. It was a fine salad. Not inexpensive but good solid food. And now instead of going by the place and wondering how good it is I will know it was good and hope not to be such a stranger. read more

This was my first time at this location. The one in St. Charles had excellent service. This place, not so much. We were not greeted for about 5 minutes. Just kind of lingered by the door. Then told, "it'll be a little bit." Not a real time frame. It wasn't long, and we were bustled to a sticky table. Our waitress arrived right away to the table, with no introduction. She wanted to take a drink and food order, right away. Well, thanks for being prompt, but we needed to look at the menu. My husband ordered a mixed drink, and the soda was flat. I had requested Splenda for my tea, and it was never brought. So, the food really wasn't bad. The fried pickles were delightful. They were great as a side, because they came along with our meals, not before. The presentation of the food was severely lacking. Just thrown onto a plate. I got a salad with shrimp added. The shrimp was tasty, and the lettuce was fresh. My husband, though, got tortellini cajun. It was pretty bad. There was about zero flavor. The pasta was cold and harder than it should have been. Lots of older local folks dine here and think they have the right of way. Service was good. Many seemed to be regulars and know other diners and the servers. Garlic cheese bread came out hot and fast. Tortellini was hot and fresh. I ordered with extra peas and it was above average. That being said, I have pretty high standards on tortellini. We've been to Massa's before but it has been a few years. We met friends for dinner last night arriving about 5:30. They were starting to fill up but we didn't have to wait for a table. Two in our group ordered from the special fixed price menu. One had the beef pepe with caesar salad and gooey butter cake. My husband ordered the dinner salad with no cheese and oil and vinegar for dressing (they brought sweet Italian dressing...any restaurant should have plain oil and vinegar!). He also ordered the chicken piccata and asked about cheese. She said no cheese but there's some cream in the sauce (really? Never had chicken piccata with cream in the sauce) so he asked for the sauce on the side. She made a face and said that would just be grilled chicken on a bed of pasta...ok, we know that. I ordered a caesar salad and Linguine Tamara. The description sounded wonderful and it would have been if the chicken had been just grilled instead of grilled the day before. Day old chicken has an unmistakable funk and this definitely had that funk. The sauce and mushrooms were great...chicken part, nasty. I learned later my husband's chicken had the same funk! He got a dessert with his fixed price and got the tiramisu which he gave to me since it's dairy. It was delicious but they served this refrigerated dessert on a hot plate! They completely forgot the gooey butter cake and of course disappeared so she could ask about her dessert. I had to eat mine since it was melting on the hot plate. The server finally reappeared to bring our check so she was able to ask for her dessert...blank stare. OMG just too many fails at this established restaurant that should know better. Oh and they took my husband's salad away before he was finished and he said it was the best part of his meal! Won't go back any time soon. read more
