Masalaz is another hidden gem. Hidden behind a McDonald's, I'm not sure how you would even spot it if you don't know about it. I've been meaning to check out Masalaz when I was in the mini strip mall a few months ago. One of my co-workers, who is Indian, highly recommended it so that really pushed me to go. They specialize in South Indian cuisine, specifically dosas. We came on Saturday for an early dinner but pretty much had the place to ourselves. The staff here are super friendly and we chatted with one of the son's who was keen to converse with us. Very genuine guy. They offer buffets for a really reasonable price. It's $13.99 on weekdays and $15.99 on weekends. That is cheaaaaaaaaap! - Mango lassi ($3.49) - we decided to get one to share but L ended up wanting to get her own after she had a sip. She's never had one before! Missing out on the good things in life. The mango lassi was light, creamy and just sweet enough. - Papadum - not sure if the papadum came with one of our dishes but I think it was complimentary. Whetted our appetite while we waited for the main event. - Mysore masala dosa ($9.99) -this dosa came out differently than I'm normally used to but dammmmmmmmmmn, the filling was absolutely delicious. The potato inside had the perfect amount of heat and the spice mixture made you want to immediately eat another bite. - Vegetable biryani ($9.99) - the biryani was a solid choice; just look at those fried garlic bits. Harmoniously well balanced and flavourful. - Uthappam ($10.49) - Indian pizza made with rice and lentil flour. I've only had uthappam one other time in Calgary (see Raj Palace). This one was much different but just as good. Light, fluffy and a touch of sweetness from coconut flakes. - Vegetable masala curry ($8.49) - rich, creamy masala curry but not too heavy. Good variety of vegetables. I like how it's completely different than what you're normally used to with northern Indian food. - 3x Roti ($1.99 each) - three roti's were waaaaay too much for the three of us but we powered through all of them. Not a single piece of roti was left unscathed. - Gulab jamun ($2.99) - milk balls soaked in sweet syrup. Not too sweet; two to share was the perfect way to end our meal. I really appreciated how hot and fresh these were. There's an abundance of Indian places south side but this one is worth checking out. Next visit, we'll come back to try out the buffet. Had two masala dosas with my partner - soooo good. Both together were under $20 and extremely filling. Spice level was a mild throat burn, more than I like but not overwhelming. I added the extra peppers so could easily have added less. With the construction - turn right at the McDonalds or you'll be looping another 10 minutes. read more

Not as good as at was 8 or 10 years ago ... Had the veggie buffet. The masala dosa's filling was somewhat bitter! Sambar was good. However no other "dipping sauce" for the dosa was offered. The Gulab Jamin tasted like the oil used in its preparation was not fresh. read more

Located in a strip mall on 66 St. in a very unassuming location, it would be very easy to miss this restaurant if you weren't looking for it. However, I suggest you plan on looking for this place and eating here soon. This is a family run South Indian restaurant, and as a result both the service and food are superb! We chatted with several family members a couple of times throughout our visit, and they were happy to tell us about the food as well as were impressed that I knew what South Indian food entailed as I had visited Kerala several years ago. Since my visit to Kerala, I've been searching for the Keralan fluffy rice, so I was excited when I finally found it here at Masalaz. South Indian food has a distinct taste that differentiates it from what most people think is Indian food. We had the thali, otherwise known as the vegetarian buffet, and there were so many great dishes. Even my husband who is a huge meat lover loved the food and said he didn't miss eating meat. The samosas are some of the best I've ever tasted! The potato and onion dosa was also fantastic, and the portion size was ginormous. We also ordered mango lassis, and they were very refreshing. The prices here are very good. For two buffets, drinks and after tip, we paid less than $40. The decor here is very simple, but that's not what you come here for. It's all about the delicious food and fabulous service! I only wish I had found this place sooner. read more

Ordered pani puri, the cheese masala dosa, lamb masala curry with a side order of roti. It was all really good! My bf isn't a big fan of lamb but this he sure loved! The meat was tender and fall off the bone and the curry was coconut based and full of different spices. The dosa was delicious and the potato onion filling had so much flavor! Come here for the friendly service and simple, tasty food! The restaurant wasn't busy when we visited and it felt like going to a friend's house for dinner. The owner (presumably) was chatting with us about summer plans and camping. He was a super nice guy and made our visit really enjoyable. We ordered Masala dosas which were tasty and filing. They were accompanied by a chutney, spicy lentil soup (sambar) and some kind of spread that tasted coconut-ty. All were yummy and together they created a great combination. The delicious dosas convinced us to order a chicken biryani to go. Best decision we made all week. ;) The restaurant itself is very basic with little in the way of decor. It's not someplace I'd bring a date but it's good enough for a quick bite to eat. read more

This restaurant kind of reminds me of a South Indian restaurant from my hometown in Southeast Asia; so, curries and roti are comfort foods for me -- I could eat it for breakfast/lunch/dinner. I LOVE South Indian cuisine and was very delighted to discover it today; we always drove by it on the way to Millwoods. There are many North Indian restaurants, but this appears to be the only South Indian restaurant in Edmonton. (I must also mention that I'm very fussy with how curries are spiced!) If you are, however, torn between roti and the pratha (they are spelt differently on the menu), I would definitely recommend the prata as it's light and fluffy; the roti is really good too -- it would probably be the healthier option between the two; two people can definitely share 1 roti. Their roti is huge! Their Mango Lassi was absolutely delicious! The prices of everything on the menu are very reasonable. The menu has plenty of vegetarian options for non-meat eaters. Between two people, we had our own roti and shared a huge dish of curry. We tried the vegetable masala. Even my fiance who hates peas loved the vegetable masala curry; it was creamy and aromatic. I could spot a piece of star of anise, which I couldn't chew on. (I'm a bit of a spice geek) We took take-out after dining in; butter chicken and 3 pieces of pratha. The bill came to around $30 for dine-in AND take-out. Curries are so delicious and are all around $9 to $11. I can only die imagining how yummy the curries would be served with Briyani; we didn't have room to try. (Maybe next time!) While we were paying our bill, we had a chance to talk to the owner. My fiance reminisces about the roti, curry and "teh-tarik" (pulled tea, in Malay) he had in Brunei. Realizing the language differences, I explained to the owner what it was; loose tea-leaves, poured from cup to cup. He said, he could serve "metre chai" but not many people know what it is and would splash it over themselves! I want to come back and try their dosa. (Stuffed roti or crepes) The one that really caught my eye was palak paneer dosa, which is cheese and spinach. read more

There are only few South Indian restaurants in Edmonton . And this one is my favourite . The food is really authentic and the service is excellent . The weekend buffets are the best and they are not pricey at all . Little bit smaller in space and sometimes you may have to wait a bit to be seated especially during the weekends . There are few 5 star recommendations I give out but this place definitely deserves it. We started with a paneer masala dosa and it was huge. Imagine a large pizza crust rolled up in crepe format. That's the size of the dosa. The coconut chutney and spicy side paired nicely with the soup for dipping. We also ordered a butter lamb and this may be the best butter sauce I have had ever. It was light, flavorful and creamy. You have to try it to believe it. We also had a beef olathiyatheu which I can't pronounce but it was in a dark red sauce that may have had tamarind in it. It was also very flavorful with lots of spices and was second only to the butter lamb. The chicken biryani was also solid but in comparison to the currys, was just very good instead of amazing. The prices are very reasonable and while the outside of the place may look a little eh, the food inside definitely makes up for it. We will be back to try more things for sure. read more

Researching restaurants that make dosa, I found this hidden gem. We first went on a Sunday which turned out to be the best time to go - they have a $10 Sunday buffet! You can't beat that price. The buffet includes dosas, idlis and many other common South Indian dishes and there's always gulab jamuns for dessert. The service has always been very friendly. They'll go out of their way to explain all the dishes and how to assemble various items as well as keep checking to make sure you're enjoying the food. The only two downsides are: 1) although it says it opens at 11:30, don't show up before noon and 2) the potato mixture in the dosa could be vastly improved. However, neither of these ruin the experience and I've been back many Sundays since that initial trip out. read more

One of the authentic kerala style cooking I have tasted in Edmonton. The weekend buffet has all the important items to cover from bucket list. One of the few restaurants who doesnt compromise on the buffet menu. The vadas with sambar are so fresh and so close to what we have at home. A hole in the wall place can be hit or miss but Masalaz is definitely a hit. I have eaten there twice. Both times I ordered dosa which is a gigantic crepe rolled up into a cylinder shape. I have had dosa that were oily in other Indian restaurants but the dosa from Masalaz is not oily at all. Some part of their dosa is crispy and some part of it is soft. I recommend the masala dosa which has curry spiced boiled potato pieces in the middle of the roll. The soup that comes with the dosa is good for dipping but it could be a little spicy hot for some. If you like to try other dishes and dosa, their buffet comes with a full size dosa. The weekend buffet has meat dishes but I heard the weekday buffet is vegetarian only which I would certainly like to try as South Indian is famous for vegetarian dishes. read more

Terrible recent experience today. TOTALLY shattered!!!! Ordered special chicken, 2 x masala Dosa to go.. went home only to realize towards the end of our meal that I had a USED BANDAID in my sambhar and I was actually chewing on it. Me and my husband felt really betrayed. As it raises a BIG question on how hygienic and seriously they think about public safety while working behind the line in the kitchen. Spoke with the owner and she couldn't believe that such a thing happened. She apologized and offered me a "Free meal". Well... I seriously feel that it's an offence to feed such a food to public where the owners doesn't care nothing about their customers. read more

Delicious South Indian food. Service can be quite slow, though friendly, so we tend to do take out. The parrota has been declared by several friends to now be their favorite type of Indian bread, surpassing naan. I would agree, though I also love their enormous rotis. Both go great with the butter chicken and curry chicken masala dishes. Our go-to Indian takeout place. read more

We were looking for a mid range Indian restaurant on the south side and this restaurant had several favourable reviews online so we decided to check it out. It was tougher to find due to the fantastic Mill Woods construction, but it was worth searching for! It was small on the inside but clean and cute. It had six tables seating from 2 to eight people. After a quick glance at the menu we opt for the buffet - vegetarian during the week. The buffet had so many options!! We were amazed at the wide variety of dishes! A restaurant twice the size would have half the selection. Once we were seated with our food, our server kept bringing out buns and dishes that were included in the buffet including a ghee diss which was amazingly delicious! All the food was amazingly fresh and flavourful. Our server was friendly and attentive and made lots of suggestions for sauces on our food. We finished our meal with a delicious chai tea. The entire meal was under $20. Masalez is a gem of a restaurant! If you enjoy authentic South Indian food, this place is for you! read more

From Toronto out with buds for my bday and we come across this restaurant. Wasnt the hottest decor, BUT let me tell you. The food was absolutely killer. Indian spices were at their best. Amazing food, very intelligent staff who were extremely friendly. You must go try the food at this hidden gem of restaurants. My second time there i wasnt as impressed, but i am going back as i know its going to satisfy better than my first time. Honestly, try their food. Absolutely fantastic food and a really nice change from East Indian spice. Butter chicken was out of this world and again doesn't compare to East Indian. Flavours were more "peppery" and is now my favourite! Potato and onion dosa was phenomenal and had great flavour as well. As a student, what origonally attracted me to go across the city to this lovely East Indian place was the amazing prices - that and I am also visiting India soon. The owner Matthew remembers me every time I go in. I dine alone, but I never feel awkward or anything. Matthew makes good suggestions on what to try as I like trying something new often. Went to this restaurant on Sunday for lunch with my friends. The food tasted really good and the service as well. Coming to menu it has lunch as well as popular breakfast items included in the menu which is great for that price. My favourites are aapam, mutton biryani, vada, chicken curry and chicken fry.
