    Garlic Naan
    Vilma R.

My husband and I ordered take out from Little India for the first time. We really liked the curries and the options to "make your own" curry by choosing your protein and then choosing your curry sauce. We got a lamb curry and a fish one. Both were super yummy! We also got the garlic naan bread which was also very delicious! The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because we ordered the coconut rice which normally is my favorite type of rice so we actually got 2 orders of this. We also ordered the regular basmati rice as well. The coconut rice was not cooked in coconut milk like others I have had, this one was basically regular basmati rice with sweet shredded coconut mixed in. It was too sweet and really overpowered the delicious curry. We ended up not eating much of the two coconut rice containers but polished off the regular basmati. My advice, skip the coconut rice and opt for the regular basmati. Other than that the restaurant was clean and the food delicious!

    Dairy free Butter Chicken

It's been 5 years since I reviewed this place last. They were doing a modified Butter Chicken for me made with coconut milk to make it Dairy Free. After a couple years, they stopped doing it for me. However recently I asked again and they said yes. So I ordered it today and it's as good as ever. To be able to have a favourite dish again is amazing. Thank you to Bobby, the owner, in following a suggestion and creating a Dairy Free option for us with allergies. They have many other dairy free (and gluten free) options on their menu so make sure to ask for it. They even have a gluten free (and dairy free) naan bread, which is more like a wrap but is delicious and a wonderful option available. Note that their rice has margarine with dairy so it's not safe for those with dairy allergy.

***UPDATE*** I went to Little India 2 weeks later and had a terrible experience. We were a group of 10 adults (5 couples) and a baby. We went in at around 7:30 on a Saturday evening. The place was crowded and busy with more people streaming in. We had to wait for a few minutes before a table could be arranged for us. During checkout, we informed the male staff at the counter that we had purchased dinner buffet coupons from Groupon; and we were going to pay per couple. They in turn inform us that we couldnt use our coupons- the reason being, only one Groupon is allowed per table. And since 5 couples sat at the same table, we werent allowed to use the coupons! Now this is ridiculous. We tell them; that's not what is mentioned on the Groupon website for Little India. The male staff is confused and calls in for a female staff. The lady is not cooperative or listening to whats happening. She outright says that we cannot use the coupons (Please note that we are 5 couples with 5 different groupons). She says that due to Groupon they are already losing so much business (honeslty as customers, this is not our problem and it is due to their wish and will that they are on Groupon!). She tells us if you had all sat at 5 different tables- then you could redeem your coupons! One- it was a rush hour for Little India at 7:30 PM on a weekend for their dinner buffet. Two- establishments in the hospitality sector generally tend to the care and comfort of their customers especially when you have lots of people come in together. Three- this is plain absurd. Why would you go as group to a restaurant when you plan to sit at different tables. Didnt we give them more business by deciding to sit together at one table so that more and more people simultanously came in for their dinner buffet and could occupy the rest of the tables? The lady at the counter was un-apologetically bossy and told us to pay the bills (full price) and leave. She kept asking- "Who next? Who next?". And one of the male staff amidst all this did mention that such confusions with their Groupon coupons do happen atleast once a month or two! Yet, they did nothing about it. This is outrageous. As a customer, who HAD good, things to tell about the restaurant; there's none left. Also please imagine the chaos we had to go through and later on with Groupon (cancelling coupons and getting our refund). It was a collective decision of 10 people to head over to this place cos of their reputation so far. But not anymore! There was time and monetary loss involved and not to the mention the mental strain we incurred trying to figure out the "logic" Little India metted out to us! To the Management, The food at Little India is okay-ish (mediocre) as mentioned earlier. The behaviour of the staff and politeness to customers matter too. Its a mix of both. Sad to say, you are lacking in the latter. Definitely will not be recommending this place to any other singles, couples or groups :) ******** When you are a newbie in town and are craving for some North Indian food, Little India is one of the most recommended places and a buffet house at that too! We went for their lunch buffet (CAD 16.95). On entering the restaurant, you can find massive Indian statues. The ambience is very welcoming owing to the warm lights around and hanging lanterns; which also makes it an excellent place for a date or special occasions/gatherings. There are two halls with a good seating capacity. You are first served Dahi Papri Chaat (Indian savoury with curd and pakoras topped withIndian chutneys- lending it a spicy yet tangy taste). Amazing. The buffet comprises of two soups, two types of rice, plenty of veg/non-veg options- Butter Chicken, Tandoori Chicken, Spicy Garlic Chicken Wings, Paneer Butter Masala, etc. They have a salad bar too with your veggies, fruits and chaat items, chutneys, etc. You are served naan bread- Garlic/Plain at your table and refilled from time to time. Coming to the main part- the desserts, haha! There was Gulab Jamun, Jalebi, Rice Kheer and Mangi pudding. What I appreciate most about their dessert is the normal level of sweetness in them. Definitely makes for a perfect dessert; no sugar-rush :) VFM: 3/5 Ambience: 3/5

    Lamb Vindaloo

I had heard amazing things about Little India but for some reason it took me forever to finally try their food. Let me just say WOW! This was some of the best Indian Food I've ever had! My absolute favourite was the lamb vindaloo and the garlic naan. I love how there are so many vegetarian options but also different meat options (nice to have something other than chicken!) The paneer pakora was also incredible, and I couldn't believe how much came with one order, just be warned that it is addictive and very filling! I know for sure that I will be ordering from here again, but I'm really excited for when they are fully open for the buffet and I can try many new dishes!

Probably the best Indian place in this area. For lunch they have a good buffet that offers a nice selection of the usual dishes, and the waiters were prompt about bringing fresh hot naan to the table. And refills too! My only complaint would be that the butter chicken at the buffet was completely bland, there was no spice to it at all. I guess this is the dish they tone down for the folks who can't handle any spice; some of the other buffet options had a bit more kick. It was good to see that ALL the buffet dishes looked extremely fresh and hot and were replaced often, I didn't see anything that looked as if it had been sitting around for long. I've also come here to pick up take-away, and the helpings are generous (my one dish of butter chicken was at least three meals' worth). Ordering off the menu rather than from the buffet you can specify the spice level you want. At the front of the restaurant they have a large section with traditional sweets displayed in two large display cases. Clearly if you want to take some dessert to go your only problem will be choosing which of the bewilderingly large assortment to take. The decor is quite pleasant also, lots of carved wood and hanging lights. There's a main area in the front near the buffet, and then a larger side room with a bar at the back, so there's a reasonable amount of seating. Would be fine for groups or celebrations, or a quiet date.

It's hard to believe that I haven't written a review yet for Little India. My fiancé and I love this restaurant, we feel that they have the best Indian food in the entire city. I've been coming to this restaurant frequently for their lunch and dinner buffet. My fiancé and I have even been ordering dinner from them on Skip the Dishes a couple times a month. Their prices are reasonable, and the food is consistently well made and flavorful. The lunch buffet at Little India runs until 3:30pm, which is perfect because the lunch buffet price is super reasonable at less than $15/person. We usually come for lunch because it's the same food as dinner, just at a cheaper price. Most Indian restaurants in the city have their lunch buffet until 2-2:30pm, so it's nice that Little India has their lunch price until 3:30pm. Great for those lazy weekends! Little India has a variety of dishes for their buffet including samosas, paneer (curry flavors change frequently), butter chicken, usually a goat or lamb curry, fish pakora, tandoori chicken and more. They also have a salad bar and dessert station. Before heading to the buffet, they will ask if you want nan and what type of nan bread - regular or garlic nan. At one point they even mentioned to us that they have gluten-free nan that's made with chickpeas. We haven't tried it but love that they have that as an option. The nan comes out quick and fresh. It is usually sitting on our table after we've filled up our plates with food from the buffet. One thing that sets Little India apart from other Indian restaurants, is that when you come back from the buffet, they have this delicious appetizer waiting for you. I'm not sure what it's called but it's a mixture of sauces and chickpeas. I wish I knew the name of it because it is SO good. Another thing that Little India offers that I haven't seen anyone else offer, is a take-out option for their buffet. I have yet to try this but their website states that you get one container for food, one container for nan and one container for dessert. SUCH a good idea, I'll be trying this out soon. Little India has been consistently good for years since I've started coming to this restaurant. I look forward to many more visits in the future!

Look for a continuous stream of cars lined up, waiting to get their Tim Horton's fix. Kerala has been open for a few months now and specialize in south Indian food, which seems harder to find compared to their northern counterpart. I'm trying to recall how they came up on my food radar but I'm drawing blanks. J and I decided to check them out on a late Sunday afternoon. We came around 2:30pm so obviously the place wasn't too busy but there were a couple of patrons inside. The interior is nothing fancy but it is simple and homey. Not sure why Kerala claims this to be their "special" menu. LOL. Dosas appear to be one of their speciality items here as several tables were ordering them for lunch. I've had dosas several times and wanted to try a couple other things on their menu so we skipped out this time. A couple curries along with quite a few breads I've never had or heard of before, kothu paratha and chaats (savoury snacks). Chaats are street food snacks - wish we had tried a few of these instead as I'm a sucker for anything originating from street stalls. Biriyani and thali round things out. Their fresh cocktail juices are a perfect way to get your dose of healthiness in - Goat biryani ($11.49) - made Kozhikodan style, baked basmati rice layered with spices and topped with cashew, raisins, deep fried onion and served with hot pickle and raitha. This biryani was pretty similar to what we had when we went to Chutney. Simple but the goat was tasty. I liked the combination of cashews and raisins which gave the rice some sweetness and crunchy texture. - Mushroom masala ($8.99) - we decided to try one of their vegetables curries and opted for their mushroom masala. I love all things mushroom but the flavour here was pretty one dimensional. Serving portion was also on the small side. - Appam ($1.25) - we decided to try a couple of their breads although they were out of a few that I've never had before. The appam was the best out of three but quite plain. Odd that there was no sauce or condiment to accompany any of the breads so we resorted to using the curry as a dip. Couldn't help but compare them to Sambol's amazing hoppers (which is like appam's cousin in Sri Lankan). - Kerala parotha ($1.50) - the kerala parotha is a layered flatbread. Think of it as an Indian style roti canai without that amazing Malaysian deliciousness. It was somewhat flaky but lacked any real flavour. - Chapati ($1.00) - the chapatti is unleavened flatbread. Apparently, this one is like regular roti. I wasn't a fan. Skip it. - Sweet lassi ($4.00) and Energizer ($4.00) - I was intrigued by their sweet and salty lassi's, both of which I've never had. I decided to go with the former and for me, it pretty much tasted like a sweet yogurt drink. Refreshing and light but mango lassi is tastier in my books. J ordered The Energizer which is made up of carrots, apple, orange, beet and ginger and claims to reduce fatigue, circulatory weakness, cholesterol and blood pressure. I had a sip and you can tell it's fresh. If you've ever juiced your own drinks, you'll know what I'm talking about. Overall, everything was decent but perhaps we would have had a better meal if we had stuck to their dosas or focused on some of their speciality savoury snacks. If you're looking for Indian food that is light and healthy, Kerala is worth a shot. Plus, it's a stone throw's away from Southgate so perfect for a before or after shopping meal.
