So we were looking for somewhere quick to eat after a long day at the hospital. We stumbled onto the Spice Grill to be honest because it is slightly off of Whyte Ave and had parking. Also we haven't had Indian food for a long time. Inside my heart sank because it looks horrible inside. A couple of tables added as an afterthought, no decorations and a sad counter. Definately made for a take out place. But we were here and took a seat anyway. Menu was full of the usual things. Prices seemed to be congruent of other restaurants but with no atmosphere. The owner or staff were friendly and hospitable and suggested a few things. We decided on the vegetable samosas, lamb vindaloo, and butter chicken. The meals came with naan and rice. It took a bit or maybe I was hungry it seemed like it. But when it came, it was delicous. The samosas were plump and flavourful and for just over 6 bucks for 3 a great bang for your buck. The lamb vindaloo was hot (as we asked for), lamb was tender and plentiful. The butter chicken was swimming in a rich sauce and my husband sopped up all of it with the delicate naan. I've only been to spice grill a few times, but on my most recent visit they made BIG IMPROVEMENTS with the decor & dinnerware! & of course the food is delicious as always. They renovated the inside and it truly freshened up the place! They upgraded their dinnerware to clean white plates and serving dishes! I glad to see such nice changes for this family run restaurant. I did not feel like cooking today. I was craving Indian food. My brother recommended this place, so I thought I'd give it a go. I ordered 1 paalak paneer,($10.99) and 1 mutton curry(13.99). Both came with naan and rice. It was spicy and delicious. Enough to feed 2. It took about 20 minutes, so don't come if you're in a hurry. The server was very robotic, but not unfriendly. It's a small space. Good menu. I guess they have beer, but it's not the kind of place you want to hang out and drink. Lots of customers. read more

I stopped by spice grill last weekend and was pleasantly surprised. The venue itself is nothing special but the food was very tasty, I had the tikka chicken which comes with extra sauce, seasoned rice and homemade pita. The pita was a little more crisp than I've had before but was extremely fresh and tasty. It was quick too, only took about 10-15 min for my food. No you don't want to expect comfy chairs and fancy interiors. Don't expect variety and don't expect westernized Indian dishes. But if you want cheap, tasty, spicy mouth watering yummylicious Indian North Indian food, you got to try this one. If I had to describe this place, I would say it remids me of my college canteens, roadside dhabas and cheap dates. Now how long has it been since you NRIs have had a taste of something like that. The food here is great! I looove really good Indian food and yup, it is good! But, the place is so small that when I went in I couldn't get a table. I thought, no worries, with only 3 tables it must be more of a take-out place, so I placed an order to-go. Well, I had to stand there for 20 minutes before my small, 2 item, order was ready. So, it's good that it took long (hence not a lot of pre-cooking and sitting around) but too long to wait for grab n' go. Oh, and it is crazy hot in the place! I suggest popping in, but maybe order and then go check out a store near by. You'll be happy with the food, on the suggestion of Phil W I had the butter chicken. I have only really had one dish here... the Butter chicken with rice and naan. I wish I had more dishes for a sample size, but what are you gonna do? The place is small... like about 10 seats small. And it's hazy inside, the windows are kind of dingy, and it's just not really terribly appealing visually. But the Butter Chicken is outstanding! Creamy, with just the right level of spice. The chicken is super tender, and very satisfying. It's served with rice and a piece of naan. The rice is fantastic... the naan is not. The naan had none of that bubbly charred goodness that we all have come to know and love. And it was chewy, in a bad way. The texture reminded me of a rubber yoga mat. I ate it, but I would have much preferred more of the rice, which was perfect. Despite the sub-par naan, I'll be back for that delicious Butter Chicken and Rice. So lets call this a 3.5 star review. If they fix the naan problem, this meal would be a solid 4 stars for sure. read more

The service is lovely, as were the staff - who even sneak free food into your bag. The food poisoning... not so much. I don't know what the heck was in the food, but it was this very salty substance (probably a preservative) that made the food almost uneatable. It was extremely spicy too (only one level of heat), but I can usually deal with that. Unfortunately, the combination of both meant I got to spend the evening in the bathroom. This is the first time Indian food has EVER made me sick, and I've been eating it since I was about 4 years old, so there was def something wrong with this place. Avoid, Avoid, Avoid!! read more

Finally got a chance to try Spice Grill this afternoon. I was first struck by how dingy and small the place is. Based on atmosphere alone, this would not be my first choice of places to eat. The menu is written on a white board near the entrance. Prices are reasonable and portions are good - the tandoori chicken was a quarter chicken with saffron rice and a freshly made naan. My three veggie samosas (for only $3.99) were huge - I could not even finish the last one. They were crispy and full of potato, peas, and spices. It took a while for the food to be prepared, so this is definitely not a fast food place, but if you don't mind the looks and can find a seat, Spice Grill is worth checking out for the food. read more

I was walking down Whyte Ave. looking for some good food to-go. I then came across Spice Grill and decided to give it a try. I was looking into getting a sandwich of some sort (since there was a sign outside that said they had sandwiches) but to my surprise there wasn't any. Anyways, I wasn't really looking into spending $14 for lunch but whatever I was already there and I do love Indian food. The staff was really friendly and attentive. I ended up ordering the chicken tikka and it was delicious. The portions were great and the naan was fresh. On the down side, the place was really small and extremely HOT. I am glad they had a small table outside because I wouldn't had been able to enjoy my meal while sweating inside. The place can get smokey but it's worth it. They only had styrofoam plates And cups and plastic utensils to eat in but I didnt go there for the dishes. The food was awesome. Very friendly staff. I'm only rating 2 stars because I've been very dissapointed at the last few times I've ordered from spice grill. This used to be my staple go - to place, sometimes many times a week. Lately the rice tastes different. The spices on the chicken aren't the same consistency they used to be. The chicken itself has a different texture. It used to be so full of flavor...now its getting bland. One of the vegetarian dishes that comes with deep fried naan ( usually amazing ) came hard and gross the last two times I've ordered it. I keep hoping it was just that one time...every time. ..but it seems to be getting consistently worse. I've mentioned it a few times...I don't know what's going on with spice grill but I want that old flavor back! I don't understand how this place is rated almost five stars. The interior was questionably dirty other then the food prep area where people can see. We sat at 1 of the 4 tables and listen to our food being warmed up in the microwave. The only thing that was fresh was the naan which was very crispy within minutes. I'm not trying to be mean but I honestly thought I was going to get sick when I got home. The tandoori chicken was so hard on some edges that we couldn't even eat it and the rice looked like it was sitting there for a while. We had to drink out of a jug which was left on the table from the last person who was there. We saw our samosas come out of the microwave. There was no dishes available either they make you eat off paper plates and when you ask for them they don't really seem to want to give it. There wasn't much of a service or atmosphere ... I would suggest this place if you like reheated food as take out. I will definitely not be going back. Just wanted someone to write an honest review as I'm sure many others have experienced If they pay attention to where their food is coming from at this place. Once-upon-a-time I was an Indian food virgin. Not any more, because I've recently had some great food at a place called the Spice Grill. The Spice Grill is a small Indian restaurant located on the western side of Whyte Ave. I actually found it because I ran out of options on a late Sunday night, passing restaurant after restaurant with a "Closed" sign on the front door. The Spice Grills door was open and a friendly lady cheerfully welcomed me in. I don't speak a word of Hindu and had no clue what to order, so the lady patiently asked if I was a vegetarian or not and then listed some items I might be interested in. The first time here I tried a delicious chicken wrap made with veggies and real chicken(not that chicken paste stuff some donair shops use). Cost about $12 if I recall correctly. Impressed, I decided to come back. The next time I tried a vegetarian dish. It consisted of warm pita bread with some type of beans sandwiched between the layers and three small bowls of different "sauces" or "gravies" to drip them into. Wow! What a great taste sensation they were. They don't call it the Spice Grill for nothing. And although the portions seemed small to me, I was completely full at the end of the meal because food was surprisingly rich. And get this - the entire meal was less than $10! Again, I'm a complete newb when it comes to Indian food so I really don't know how the Spice Grill compares to other Indian restaurants. But I left very happy both times I've been here. Also, the people who run this place are super friendly and go out of their way to accommodate customers. Let's see: delicious, healthy food, fast friendly service, open late on weekends and prices so reasonable that you don't have to sell a kidney, pimp your sister or get a second mortgage on your home in order to pay the bill at the end. What more can you ask for? Visit the Spice Grill sometime and let the good folks who work there cook you up some food that will make both your mouth and wallet happy. read more

The Spice Grill services excellent quality food all homemade. Arjun owns and operates the business and his pride is evident. He checks to see if you like your meal and provides a brief history of how he makes it and the fact everything is made from scratch minus the French fries. The Naan bread is some of the best I have had. It is very similar to fire cooked bannock I use to enjoy on the Navajo/Hopi Nation. The portions are generous and the price is extremely reasonable. You wont leave there hungry. Food is made to order and comes out piping hot the way I like it. I like supporting the mom and pop businesses give this one a try I don't think you will be disappointed. Went there with a friend. The place was filthy. Bathroom doesn't even have a sink. It was not busy, only one other table of people. I ordered tandoori chicken and it literally took one hour! I kept telling the guy working that we were in a hurry and he said it was almost ready. I asked for my money back because I had to leave but he wouldn't comply, just kept his back to me. Then after another 5 minutes our food arrived. It wasn't close to a real tandoori chicken dish. It was caked with a heavily salted DRY paste, not a sauce. I was kind of hesitant to walk in and eat here around 9pm at night. The decor is non-existent, and the place is messy- there were newspapers sprawled over the table, and our table was wobbly. Everything is served on styrofoam. We didn't even get cups for drinking. And prices are by no means thrifty for an atmosphere worse than your local fast food joint. Why did they get 4 stars, you ask? The food is their main redeeming factor. It really caught me by surprise how tasty everything was. The naan was chewy, the lamb kebabs (they were patties) were soft, moist and flavourful. The chicken curry had an interesting spice blend and the dark meat was moist. I definitely would come back again since I value taste over atmosphere. read more

Wow, all I can say is do not go here... ever....We ordered take out and it was terrible.The palak paneer had literally 2 pieces of paneer, the butter chicken tasted like tomato paste and the dal was like water. I have eaten East Indian food everywhere, including India and, while I may not be an expert, I can say with confidence that the food was awful. When we phoned, the person we spoke with said he was overwhelmed, that the food had suffered because of that and that we could get out money back. So we drove over....again..... and he threw (actually threw) a $20 bill at us. (not the full amount by far) The place was empty when we were there and I can sincerely say that I hope it stays that way. The naan was decadent, and the tandoori was very flavourful. The owners were both there, and were very friendly, wanted to make sure I enjoyed my meal. I was on the hunt for good Indian food and I came across this place on urbanspoon and decided to check it out. I immediately regretted my decision once I first walked in because the place looked so grungy and small, however I still decided to give it a shot and ordered the Chicken Tikka with naan. I noticed there was only one man working and there was another customer waiting for his food infront of me. The food took a little while but believe me, it was definitely worth it!
