Disappointed. It's not a Halal restaurant. Though the customer service keep on saying repeatedly, without knowing what it means. On inquiring i came to know that the manager had no idea where they're buying meat from or the shop's name. I asked the manager if the restaurant is halal certified, he said 'everything halal'. We ordered a couple of take-out dishes from Dawat to supplement brown basmati rice and some vegetables that I made at home for the evening's meal. A call in by my wife was answered by a pleasant woman who identified herself as Pravina. Asking for an order each of Paneer Palak, and Lamb Korma, she was quite helpful, asking our preference for spice/heat levels. Pravina stated the restaurant was open for dining with full COVID Pandemic protocols, but if we wished to pick up, we could place the order now with any specified time for pick-up. She even thanked my wife by name, and we realized that when we provided her with our phone number, a previous order under Nancy's name must be in their system! We were quite impressed with Pravina's manner and attention to detail. Our order was hot and ready for pick-up at the appointed time which unfortunately not always the case at other establishments. Upon arrival at home, we were pleasantly surprised with the inclusion of a container of Kheer (Indian Rice pudding) which was apparently provided free of charge. The paneer and lamb were both well prepared with ample amounts of very tasty sauce. The Korma had a few nice chunks of meat, one or two on the bone, but also contained 4 quite large pieces of bone only. I believe this is fairly typical of authentic Indian lamb dishes, however one or two more pieces with meat attached would have been ideal. I would suggest that if you would prefer more meat, you would be more satisfied ordering Chicken or Beef. But as it was, we both enjoyed both dishes and had no regrets with our choices. read more

Edmonton is a city that really loves Indian food and there's a lot of it to be eaten - there's certainly no shortage. Everyone seems to have their favourite place and most people are way into the buffet method of getting that sweet, sweet curry into their mouths. Daawat has been around for many years and occupies a bit of a monopoly when it comes to Indian food in Old Strathcona. Voted #1 Best Curry 2018 and #1 Best East Indian/Tandoori 2018 by VUE Weekly, this restaurant is often spoken of highly by most. I visited on a Saturday evening and was ready to crush an Indian feast! You'll find Daawat in Ritchie on Whyte Ave, which is a great location. When you enter the restaurant you are met with a nice atmosphere with a lot of ornate decor. There's a fountain in the middle of the room (which wasn't working) and a lot of interesting art and vibrant colours that celebrate the liveliness of Indian culture. At first the restaurant was dead-silent but eventually some traditional Indian music began to play, which was nice. We were seated immediately and began to pour over the extensive menu. I was quite surprised to see that chai tea isn't served at all - an early disappointment. Because of this, I didn't order anything to drink at all. Our server left a lot to be desired. She barely said anything, rarely checked in on us, and generally seemed to forget that we were even there. However, we were asked how spicy we wanted all of our dishes to be made, to which we responded "medium." I'm not "new" when it comes to dining in an Indian restaurant and I usually have a fairly good idea of the dishes that I enjoy. This makes ordering off of a large menu like Daawat's somewhat easy and I decided to go straight to my standbys. Once ordered, our food didn't take too long to arrive. From the Chicken Specialties section of the menu, we had to grab some Butter Chicken (Original recipe from India, chicken tikka cooked in our famous makhni sauce - $14.95). I also ordered some Plain Yogurt (Homemade yogurt - $2.95) on the side, which I like to drizzle over my various curries for a bit of a play on cool heat. I feel a bit guilty beginning on this note, but this butter chicken was one of the worst dishes of the night. I've had quite a lot of butter chicken in my day and this one was very clearly made by using a can of Campbell's tomato soup... Because that's exactly what it tasted like. I have a hard time believing that this dish is anywhere close to "authentic" or an "original recipe from India" and I'm pretty sure that their "famous makhni sauce" has gone astray and didn't originally involve canned soup. This is like when you go to a bad Thai restaurant and they make the pad thai with ketchup. Aside from this, the chicken itself was acceptable. The pieces were a nice size and had a good tikka flavour, albeit slightly dry. The yogurt was very good and did a great job of serving its purpose as a tart and creamy flavour addition. Next, from the Vegetarian Specialties section of the menu I had to try the Jeera Aloo (Potatoes cooked with cumin seeds and herbs - $10.95), a new dish to me that I've never tried before. This item is marked as the "Chef's Special" which absolutely meant that I had to try it. This was the best dish of the night and I loved it! Chef's Special indeed! These ultra-tender potatoes were cooked perfectly and were coated in a beautiful, aromatic mix of spices. The flavour was intricate and bold, a true celebration of Indian cuisine. Relatively simple, this dish offered so much in such an unassuming package. This plate is a definite must and I highly recommend giving it a try! (These basically saved the meal for me.) Staying in the same section of the menu, I also ordered the Vegetable Korma (Mixed vegetables cooked in a creamy sauce with butter, raisins, almonds, herbs and mild spices - $12.95), another old favourite. This dish was fine but I've certainly had better. First of all, there were absolutely no raisins or almonds in the sauce whatsoever, as the description implies. On the other hand, I did enjoy the addition of paneer (an Indian cheese) to the plate. I find that in many cases of this dish the vegetables always seem like they came from a frozen bag (the crinkle-cut carrots gives it away) - and I was surprised to see that in this case, the vegetables seemed less so. They were bright and it was nice to have an element like this on the table. Let's talk about rice for one second. As is common with all Asian cuisines, rice is life. Rice is the base for everything. Indian food is no different and you've gotta lay down some rice on your plate and then throw your curry on top. The rice helps to collect all of the delicious sauce and I also find that it helps to prevent the different types of curry on the plate from mixing together too much. From the Rice Specialties section of the menu, I was excited to find Coconut Rice ($4.95). Not all Indian restaurants do coconut rice and it probably isn't very authentic. read more

I am sad to be downgrading Daawat, but after repeated incidents of what we have termed "food racism", enough is enough, time for an updated review. Food racism in my experience as a Caucasian is when you go to non-western food restaurant and they serve you food they think you will like because you're white, versus what you have ordered. The last 3 times we have been to Dawaat, twice with an older Caucasian friend, we have ordered our food spice level hot, or 'desi hot' to get the point across that yes, we really like spicy food and have lots of experience with it. There are some newer staff versus the ones we know well. If these newer staff are working, no matter what heat level we order, it comes out mild. Then when we tell the server it's not hot, we get this incredulous look like we don't know what we're talking about. Yes he takes it back to the kitchen, they chop up some extra chillies, mix it in, reheat the dish, and then maybe it comes out medium spice. But seriously, like that is acceptable or even appetizing! It has now gotten to the point that if these staff are working, we just order the buffet instead of going through the food racism song and dance again. We did that today, but our companion took a leap of good faith and ordered off the menu, hot spice. What he got back had barely any spice and a whole lot of oil. I know Punjabi style cooking can be heavy on the ghee but this was ridiculous. He sent it back, per usual, and got the usual result. Not impressed. I haven't done Indian buffet in a long time, with good reason. No spice! Green chilli chutney will only go so far and I am not a fan of achar. Sweet runny chana masala, over cooked dry curry beef, terrible veg pakora with potatoes so over cooked they were like red pucks, fish pakora transformed into fish curry making a soggy mess - really not great. The Mulligitawny soup was good as was the Punjabi Dal, but other than that nothing to recommend. So disappointing. Time to move on from Daawat - and just after they finally did renos! Oh yeah and they have no more bar service - used to have a great drink selection, made a mean Side Car. It's a real shame, the owners are really nice. They bought a steak restaurant in Nisku (?!) not long ago so maybe that's where the attention is going, because Daawat's quality has really slipped. read more

My husband also likes their palik paneer better than the others. The butter chicken rocks, but my favorite is the lamb vindaloo. I have eaten their buffet once. It was ok. I've been to Daawat a few times for both their lunch and dinner buffets. While the food is good, I've generally been underwhelmed by the selection of food and overall quality. Daawat generally has the same things available for their buffet - Saffron Rice, Vegetable Pakora, Vegetable Korma and Butter Chicken to name a few. Daawat offers freshly baked nan that is made to order. Before heading to the buffet, they always ask us what type of nan we prefer, we of course always choose garlic nan. It always arrives fresh, warm, and delicious. While the fresh nan bread is a nice bonus, it takes too long to arrive at our table. Every time we've been to Daawat, the nan bread arrives when were halfway done our meal, if not almost done our meal. I choose to go to Daawat because it is conveniently located on Whyte Ave with street parking. Often, we can park right in front of the restaurant and not have to walk far from our car (bonus when its -30!). I do also appreciate that Daawat has clear labels for the buffet, stating what is a vegetarian or non-vegetarian dish. There definitely are better Indian restaurants in Edmonton but Daawat can be a good option if your in or around the Whyte Ave area. I am curious to try their non-buffet items to see if the food is more flavorful. read more

But it gets a 2, and maybe more deserving of a 1 based on the staff who treat customers like they are pests. We've enjoyed your buffet countless times, as date lunch venue and with the whole family in tow, and somehow I dropped the ball on my end. My head is drooped in shame. Daawat, located right on Whyte Ave, offers an extensive Indian buffet that features deep satisfying flavors in a good variety of dishes. Fluffy rice, fresh naan (bread), savory chicken dishes, sparkling curries, sag paneer (spinach) without any bitter taste, and more. The buffet changes, so there's also an element of surprise :-) No matter what mood I'm in when I arrive, Daawat has something to feed my soul and leave me smiling. The hunnybunny loves their gulab jamun dessert, I love the kheer (rice pudding). I mentioned bringing the family here. I just ordered takeout from Daawat this evening, and it was so delicious I had to leave an instant review. I picked it up on my bike (it was well-packaged) and when I got home it was still hot and fresh and super tasty. I actually think my order was so good and perfect that everyone should order exactly what I did: chicken jalfrezi - creamy flavorful chicken dish baigan bharta - smooth and sumptuous eggplant palak dal - a mild flavored lentil dish, balancing chicken biryani - rice with tons of chicken and tasty spices 3 coconut naan - the sweet coconut flavour is to die for! spice on all - medium to hot I have to say - the food was so tasty! I tried Daawat when I had a hunger for East Indian cuisine, was near Whyte Avenue, and did not feel like heading all the way down to New Asian Village. This location of the restaurant (there are now three in Edmonton) had just opened, and I did not know what to expect. The decor is very much in line with an Indian restaurant, with lots of reds and other warm colours. The atmosphere is brighter than others, and it is about an average size in terms of the number of tables. Daawat has a lunch and dinner buffet, as well as a la carte menu. The buffet is definitely the most economic choice. There is usually a good dozen or so hot entrees, with the majority of them vegetarian - chickpea curry, lentil dishes, and at least one item with paneer cheese in it. I had a paneer dish which was the cheese in a masala sauce and it was one of the most incredible dishes I have ever had in an Indian restaurant. The meant items include butter chicken, tandoori chicken, beef curry, and something with lamb or goat. The butter chicken is tender and saucy. Desserts include a couple of traditional East Indian items like deep fried dumplings in syrup and cottage cheese squares, but also fresh fruit. You can also start your meal with salad and soup. Refillable baskets of freshly-baked naan bread come as part of the meal. To drink, have one of the beers on display in the cooler at the front of the restaurant, order some chai tea, or a soft drink. I usually just have the water they bring with the meal - I like to leave as much room as possible for the food! I have been back to Daawat and hope to return again. Been here a few times but went today to celebrate my mom's birthday on a Monday evening. We were starving so all of us had the dinner buffet ($18.95 each). Lots of dishes to choose from - a few salads that I didn't even touch, two soups (vegetable and indian style chicken soup), vegetarian and non-vegetarian, and three desserts (watermelon/pineapple, indian honey filled donut and rice pudding). Also, naan bread is amazing as always (you can pick plain, onion, garlic and coconut). Coconut is more of a dessert tasting naan though. Garlic naan was nice and fluffy. I love naan bread so much! Could eat it everyday if I had a nice naan making oven. We all stuffed ourselves silly and tasted all of the main dishes of the buffet. This is what they had: - Brocolli pakoor and vegetable pakoor - had a nice deep fried crunch to it - Plain rice and saffron rice - the usual - Daal (lentils) - Palak paneer (spinach and cheese) - Aloo gobi (cauliflower and potato) - really liked this one - Vegetable korma (creamy dish) - Tandoori chicken - very tender - Fish pakoor - perfectly cooked - Butter chicken - typical deliciousness with a slightly sweeter tasting sauce - Beef dish that we didn't try I think that was all of the dishes. I have been coming here for a while now. We love the variety and quality of the food. I love that they always have gulab jamen which is my favorite indian dessert. The bread was about the same, the onion & veg pakoras were pretty good. But the soup was not as good as before... all veg dishes with peas had strangely chewy peas. The Chana masala was "ok". I used to go to Daawat a lot when it was down on 34th ave. I was thrilled when they expanded and opened a second location on Whyte, and then sad when they closed the 34th ave location. But... I do make it for dinner once in a while (okay, to be honest, this was my first visit in a couple of years). I've only ever had buffet... good prices if you ask me. $21.95 for dinner... and I believe $14.95 for lunch. It's not a huge buffet, but I've never been disappointed. Saffron rice, butter chicken, veg pakora, veg korma, chili fish (sometimes chili chicken), and tandoori chicken are always on hand, and those are always my go-tos. I'm not sure if something's changed in the last couple of years, but the quality seems to have improved (not that there was anything wrong with it in the past!). The only change I noticed that I don't love is that the butter chicken hardly has any spice to it at all anymore. I'm sure if you order off the menu you can ask for more of a kick. I love that they bring a basket of naan to your table, rather than having you pick it off the buffet. It seems fresher this way. The service is kind of amusing. They don't seem to assign sections to the servers, they all just work where ever they're needed. Which sometimes results in 2 or 3 people asking if you need anything within a 5 minute time frame. This could be really annoying, but they're all really friendly and it didn't bother me. The water glasses always stay full, so I can't complain! They do have an impressive beer cooler you can choose from if you'd like. There are 2 beers from India and then about 100 from other areas lol Honestly, I can never drink anything other than water when I'm here... there's just too much food. My boyfriend and I tried Daawat with a groupon $15 for $30. Since no one seems to really order a la carte unless they are getting it delivered, we also opted for the buffet ($18 for dinner). On the weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was like this on a weekday as well, the place was packed. You are led to a waiting area inside a tiny strip mall of sorts, so you don't want to wait out in the cold on "the other side of the tracks". There was talk of Pakoras being brought out for waiting guests, but that did not happen. Still nice to have a waiting area outside of the cold though. The "salad" portion of the buffet was pretty simple but still good. Your standard romaine and iceberg lettuces were there, along with veggie sticks and papadums (which I thought, was the stand-out of the night). The hot food consists of your usual suspects, both veggie and non. Chicken chunks are seen in various forms, tikka and in cream curry sauces. I wasn't a huge fan of the fish korma dish. The desserts were also a little weak, as other reviews have mentioned. The garlic naan (you have your choice of butter, garlic or coconut) was outstanding, as was the beer selection. I've ordered food from here many times for years. I even moved away and came back a few years later and it still rocks! The great thing about this food is the love they put into it. It's a family run business with the younger generation involved which gives this restaurant integrity. I've never been to the buffet, so I just know this food from delivery. (sometimes it can take a while, so you can also pick it up at the convenient whyte ave location. If you want spicy, say "Indian Hot" (not western hot) and dont be surprised if you get a whole chilli pepper or two in your dish! Tough to find a place that does an awesome coconut nan. And dont forget the Kheer (cold rice pudding) for desert to cool the tastebuds from the awesome meal. This place is great for authentic indian food. The veggie curries were great, especially the veggie korma and the paneer dish (which used a curry sauce similar to the butter chicken), which was nearly as good as when we order it to go a-la-carte.. And with 10-or-so delicious veggie curries, I'm pretty sure the objective of the buffet is to convert meat eaters to vegetarianism. And while the dinner buffet is $19, it includes all-you-can-eat Naan plus three desserts. The service is very attentive for a buffet and the seating is very comfortable. read more

I am convinced that Indian restaurants have the best atmospheres in the business! I had lunch at Daawat this weekend and the first thing I noticed when I walked in were the beautiful colors - red walls, and the traditional Indian couches. They were gorgeous (and comfy)! They have a fountain in the front of the store that catches your eye immediately as well. The lunch buffet was delicious. My pants were definitely tighter when I left than when I came in! Our server was incredibly friendly and gracious. I don't think my water class ever got empty - he was right there filling it up as soon as the level dropped. He was great. The vegetarian choices on the buffet were really good and they occupied half of the buffet so there were quite a few of them. We got to choose what kind of naan bread we wanted! This was new for me because every other Indian restaurant I've been to (and that's quite a few), serve the same naan - which I love! I decided to venture out and think outside the box - I had garlic naan. And you know what, it was amazing! I was really surprised because I was skeptical (I love the regular stuff so much) but I have to admit, this stuff was great. As far as desserts go, I wasn't a huge fan of their rice pudding but the fresh fruit was fantastic. Delicious and reasonably priced. The big attraction here seems to be the AYCE buffet, but we went for a couple of individual dishes: the curry chicken and the Chana masala. Both were great, with the requested spiciness, and served fairly quickly. A bonus is their bottled beer selection. You serve yourself from the fridges near the door and they have probably close to 100 types of beer spanning a wide range of tastes. read more

Yesterday, I had a really bad experience in Dawat. There was a long hair inside the beef. Then we called a waiter who served our food, then he took off one plate and the beef. We had to call him again to give another plate which he forgot. Then he came with only with beef and no sign of the rice. We had to order rice again and wait for long time. Then in the end we called him and came to know that he is the owner of the restaurant and there was no experienced waiter, as a result owner was working as a waiter. I've been to many indian restaurants in the city and this one is probably the one I liked the least. I went there for supper and we were given menus however once my 2 friends decided to have the buffet they automatically thought I would too so they took away the menus. I asked them what was gluten free at the buffet and they said everything- really?! I know for a fact that many of those dishes contain gluten. I was not impressed. I know many people don't venture down Whyte to "the other side of the tracks" often. But that's a shame. Some of my favourite restaurants are down that way: Langano Skies and Furusato. And right across the street is this hidden gem, Daawat. I must confess, I don't always head across the tracks to Daawat since their generous delivery option (free for orders over $30) includes my Oliver neighbourhood. But I do make my way into the restaurant from time to time. And I enjoy it when I do. First off, the buffet is very kind to vegetarians, with over 5x the vegetable dishes than other Indian buffets. And the food is consistently good, if a little rich and not overwhelmingly spectacular. The accompanying naan are delicious. The paneer at Daawat is lovely, slightly sweet with the perfect creamy texture, and I love that their menu has an entire section of paneer dishes. My favourite is the "Chilly Paneer" (yes, that is how they spell it on their menu); it's one of the best paneer dishes I've ever had. It's never on their buffet, though, which is why I get delivery and order off the menu. Overall, Daawat is worth a wander down Whyte. read more

Daawat has been my "to go" place (not to be confused with "go to") on a couple of occasions along with a couple of times when we've actually sat in. The food is decent and they do maintain a good standard. Somehow I find some of the food a little too rich, but that's me - I guess. The naans are good, but that statement is true for various places. I haven't tried a huge selection of their food but what I've had, I have liked (though, not tremendously). The ambience is nice and inviting. They've got a lot of cool things, like nice furniture, a fountain, soft music and a good buffet section. They also serve a full bar. All of these things are not surprising facts about an Indian restaurant (for some reason). But they maintain it well. Neither do I have any real complaints nor do I have any fantastic observations. I would come here again, if the mood presented itself. All in all, I really wish there were more Indian restaurants that were hole-in-the-wallish. There's a wide spread of ambience, taste and quality when it comes to other ethnic restaurants but somehow Indian restaurants seem to have this one very predictable theme to them. read more

I had been ordering delivery from Dawaat for around 3 years. Its unfortunate that thier poor customer service was the deciding factor for me when choosing to no longer order from them. A regular delivery driver whom I never saw smile once, asked me to tip him in cash next time. After I tipped him generously. When I sent a private, well worded email explaining the situation, they didn't even have the decency to reply. The food is ok, the wait is long, and the customer service leaves much to be desired. With the amount of choice of different Indian restaurants, you're better off trying somewhere else. read more
