We tried Mas Amor when they first opened up and were not impressed, so it has been sometime since we had been back. We dined with a party of 5 on Saturday evening and the food was quite good! It has a pleasant surprise! The restaurant itself is pleasant and decorated well. The food was all tasty - tacos, quesadilla, dips, taco salad and the Gorditas! We liked the thin chips much better than the thick ones that came with the guac and queso. The only negative, and it is potentially a big one, was the service. The host didn't welcome us and was not very friendly and didn't move with any sense of urgency. Our server was very friendly, but at times all of us had empty drinks and it took him a long time to come check on us. My dish said it came with sour cream and when it arrived there was none on it. I asked for some and it took 10 minutes for it to arrive. My food was warm when it arrived, but cold by the time the sour cream arrived. It still tasted excellent, but I would rather go to a mediocre tasting restaurant with killer service than a place that tastes great, but you are never checked on. The restaurant was busy, but not packed. There were empty tables. The manager brought our food and checked on us at the end and he was cleaning tables. He was very nice and I felt like he probably needed more help or to do some training. I work in the service industry and I know how tough it is. But you have to have energetic staff that know how to check on folks and communicate or else you will die on the vine. I think overall we will be back and hope it was just an off night with service. Today we came back to Mas Amor Cantina to enjoy another delicious Sunday brunch. This time we had the hand cut steak fajitas. They were positively delicious! Tender steak with some crispy edges and you will see from the photo, they were still sizzling upon arrival. We also enjoyed the rice and beans, but heck, the steak and fresh made tortillas stole the show! Thank you Mas Amor......we can hardly wait to return. 5 of us went for a birthday celebration. Server was great and over stocked our table with chips! Definitely didn't have to ask for more. The food was delicious. Our table had a variety including the steak fajitas which were good except the veggies were just onions. The drinks are reasonably priced and good it just took a while to get them. The restaurant itself is beautiful and has wonderful decor, it definitely fits the cantina vibe. Service could be improved, I waited for about 5-7 minutes before a person would acknowledge me at the front desk, though I forgive them because it was busy. We sat in the lounge which I believe is usually served by the bartender but we still had a waitress who was attentive as she could be. The drinks are not typical chain Mexican restaurant fare. My quick takeaways- make a reservation, arrive early & take a selfie on the patio, order a lime margarita and ask for jalapeño, order the street corn, share a salad (great side for 4-6ppl) , order fajitas, save the broiled butter to use with dinner or with dessert churros, order tres leches cake and black coffee. Make reservations for a weekend, but there is a 6 top bar overlooking the sous chef line- that is first come first served. The bartender accommodated my request; a cocktail with jalapeño,it was fantastic. It's nice to know you can order off menu. Appetizer-complimentary chips with three salsas are provided. A must try is the street corn, it is yummy, buttery and tender. You don't have to bite the cob, it just rolls off and it's served with an a tin of broiled butter- save that it till dessert. Entree- I love the Mexican chicken salad because it is served dressed and with an equal amount of lettuce, vegetables and a grilled lime for squeezing on the salad. Next time I may ask for no dressing and just use the lime. We sampled the American tacos, the beef for tacos is grounded fine, tasted good but I did not like the consistency. Next time I will try other taco flavors because I love that they served plenty of condiments - lettuce, onions, etc... Hubby ordered the fajitas- (every-time we go) incredible presentation and hot. Plenty of crisp vegetables, and tortillas but when ordering be sure to request how you want the meat cooked; medium or well done. We forgot and ours was less than medium, which we prefer because it makes reheating better. Fajitas are served with a tasty side of grilled pork belly- in case you are kosher/halal. Dessert- The churros were okay, not spectacular but good for sharing a dessert- 3 long churros and a hot cocoa type of dip- if you order- ask for extra cinnamon sugar and save the broiled butter. My dessert suggestion is order a black coffee and the tres leches cake ; the cake is resting in a cup of sweet milk and fresh strawberries. Add the milk to your coffee and yummy! It is an open concept kitchen, you can see the food being prepared from every seat in the restaurant. I would have no problem asking for a menu item prepared a certain way or sending something back within reason. They seem to genuinely want to please their guests; which is cool for a trendy restaurant. Ambiance- the restaurant is bright, energetic and upbeat. We had one server but all of the servers smile and helped other tables. The music is upbeat but it can be loud, if you are older, I'd suggest eating outside. Outside- the outside tables are partially covered with umbrellas, and there are enough heaters to make it comfortable. There is outside casual seating areas include wicker sofas and chairs- I would plan on arriving early and enjoying a drink in one of these areas. Presentation and taste of food are pretty good. Can't really get my head around the price for small margaritas with barely any tequila and $9 drafts of modelo . Compared to other local Mexican places you could spend twice as much at this place. Now the one thing this place has going for it is the vibe. It's got that college, Charlotte feel in hickory which is neat. Service is okay pretty slow, but they are new and it shows. This is not your average Mexican joint if your an ACP, chips and queso person I wouldn't recommend. Perfectly cooked quality meats led to what may be the best plate of fajitas I've ever had anywhere in the country. The pinto beans were undercooked and not hot enough. The temperature in the restaurant was too cold, which perhaps sucked a little temperature out of the food. Mas Amor Cantina has been on my list to try for a while & they are participating in Queen's Feast as part of Charlotte's Restaurant Week. Myself & two others enjoyed dinner & drinks last night. We each had a three course meal with an appetizer, entrée & dessert. I had chips & queso while my mates enjoyed fire-roasted street corn & the casa salad. For the portion, the casa salad is the way to go. Two of us ordered the local veggie quesadilla, which was packed with veggies; it was delicious. The other entrée ordered was steak & chicken fajitas that came with amazing whipped butter. For dessert, we had the spread of Dave's chocolate cake, churros, & fried plantains with mango sauce. We rotated desserts until they were gone, all so good! For drinks, we had the classic margarita, spicy strawberry margarita, & mojito margarita. It's a beautiful building with great decor, but it ends there. I ordered the Deluxe Fajitas to split with a friend. $45. This was supposed to be for two people. First off I noticed that there wasn't much food, there were 3 shrimp (for 2 people) and definitely not enough of the extras for two. We had to pay an extra $2 to get enough of the sides for two people, and there were NO onions or peppers. The food was even cold. I expected it to come out sizzling like typical fajitas, but no. And there was no flavor. All of the adults got their food first which left the table of 7 kids waiting another 10 minutes for their food. What restaurant in their right mind serves the kids last? My son wanted 3 beef soft tacos. That's what we ordered. The guy brought the kids meal with 2 tacos and rice and beans. When he said that's not what he ordered the waiter took it away. A minute later another guy put it in front of him and when my son said that he ordered three soft tacos the guys said, "Well this is what you get" I couldn't believe it. He was so condescending. I just told him to eat it and ignore the stuff he didn't want. Then he said it was gross and he didn't want it. I tasted to see if he was exaggerating, the beef was greasy and had zero flavor. So I sent it back and ended up ordering mahi fish tacos...which also had no flavor and only 5 small chunks of fish but cost $18 I don't live in the area, but I wouldn't waste a dime there if I did. The free chips were also plain and the included salsa seemed like it was from a jar. And they never refilled any of them. read more

This was the best find in a long time. Some friends and I had a marvelous dinner and experience here. Everything from the margaritas to the food was excellent. The atmosphere was amazing and very welcoming and our service was exceptional. We had the chili rellanos, tamale, and the enchiladas with the quest for a starter. I loved it. My wife loved it. Mas Amor is fun, lively and new restaurant in Hickory. The ambiance is low key, casual, comfortable and just a little on the hip side. Mas Amor is bringing the outside in with the decor and style. Very well lit with plenty of space between tables; you don't feel crammed or packed in - very comfortably arranged. Staff is incredible, very attentive and aware of their customers. They are buzzing all about the place moving and grooving, taking care of customers. Even staff that are customer forward facing are kind, saying hello and asking how service is going. I appreciate the coordinating uniforms for staff - this is nice because it makes the whole presence look professional and put together. It lays out leaderships expectations. (Even if it's black jeans and black Mas Amor shirts...it's still very professional). We knew exactly who was staff and who wasn't. Chefs were talking to cooks, talking to wait staff, talking to servers...uniquely in sync. Food was a grand slam. Really damn good. Uniquely flavored, with non-traditional dishes and/or toppings. Crispy, juicy, bright and flavorful vegetables. The Diablo shrimp tacos were incredible. Loved the bacon chunks...this was a new thing for me. Pinto beans with onion - fantastic. Lovely. The chips and salsa are very good too. I love the different choices from a green verde, medium red and a habenaro. I enjoyed the habenaro the most. But the others were just as flavorful. The queso appetizer was 7$. Some slightly high. Our service was horrible. Their food should be labeled spicy. Traditional birria tacos are not spicy. The ones I got were season by the gates of hell. And we did not have water. We ran out due to our server not being around multiple times. The house made salsa is good. The avocado based is wonderful. Our party got birria tacos. Way to spicy. I really wanted to love this place - the decor and ambiance is lovely - but the food really isn't great. So many dishes are unnecessarily positively drowning in cheese (our group had the enchiladas suizas, birria classic tacos, and a quesadilla) - I love cheese, but it overwhelmed everything else about every dish. Any cocktails involving fruits were almost sickeningly sweet - pineapple cilantro marg, el corazon marg) - with the exception of the paloma, which was solid. It's a shame because service is lovely too! Hopefully they will work out the kinks with the food. read more
