All I can say is WOW! We decided to stop in on an out of town trip. The decor is probably the prettiest I've seen in a Mexican restaurant. I love the lighting and artwork. The server was excellent and recommended some great things. We had the yuca bites and cheese dip for an appetizer and Steak à la macha for dinner. It was all so well presented and delectable. I just had one of my best meals ever, and definitely my best Mexican meal ever! I started with the appropriately named perfect margarita and that's exactly what it was, right down to the fresh lime that was squeezed and shaped to look like a sunburst. For drinks we ordered the special margarita which is adorable and the horchata. Both tasted as good as they looked. We picked the restaurant based on the reviews and it was very good. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and not your basic, cookie-cutter Mexican restaurant look. We started with the tostones appetizer which was very good. 3 rounded tostones filled with not sure what, but it was very good. We then shared the steak fajita quesadilla. It was very large, had lots of steak and was delicious. For both the app and dinner we had to ask for plates and silverware. There were 2 negatives: 1. They don't know how to make a traditional margarita. The server kept saying 'lime' and we kept saying no. The manager (?) came over to ask what we really wanted. At the end of the conversation he said he got it. What did we end up with? Lime. It was sweet and gross. Seems like they get everything premixed and flavored. A traditional margarita is tequila, lime juice and Cointreau or Grand Marnier. Not hard. 2. They don't know how to price their beer. They offer 3 size drafts: 16 oz - $4.25 20 oz - $6.50 24 oz - $8.50 Usually, as you order bigger sizes, there is a small savings as it gets bigger. Not here. I'll do the math by ounce for you: 16 oz - 26 cents 20 oz - 32 cents 24 oz - 35 cents If you compare the 16 oz to the 24 oz you'll see that you get 50% more beer but pay 100% more. If I'm ever in the area I'd go again but know what pitfalls to avoid. read more

Excellent as always! Food is always so fresh and authentic. Reminds me of the flavors from my childhood when my Hispanic grandfather would cook for us. The carne asada is my usual go to, along with their blood orange margarita. So good and a beautiful presentation. The restaurant is very clean and their servers are top notch professional, they are dressed in black and truly engaged making sure that their customers have a great experience. Very convenient location, just off Route 40. Nice place- on the outside, you can tell that it's a repurposed fast food restaurant, but inside it's very cool. We opted to eat on the patio, which is spacious and shady. I ordered coffee, my Bride got water, and the Kid ordered a Jarritos Tamarindo (tamarind soda; $2.50). Two out of three ain't bad, but they were "out of coffee," which sounds like English, but didn't make any sense to me. So I got a horchata ($3.75) instead, which was excellent, if decaffeinated. We also ordered a bowl of Esquitas ($4.99), which is kind of like Elote (street food corn on the cob) but in a bowl. I can see where it was good, but since I'm really not a fan of mayonnaise, I just had a bite. The things I do to bring you guys accurate reviews! The Kid said it was a bit too mayo-forward and wet. So I would get the Eloté ($3) next time. I ordered the Tacos (3) de Carnitas ($12) which were delicious, and came with a side of some kind of bean and bacon soup which was also very tasty. My Bride got the Sincronizada ($11) which is basically a chicken and avocado quesadilla. She said it was delicious, and would be a good choice for someone who was looking for a lighter option. The Kid got the Tacos (3) de Birria ($13) which he proclaimed "as good as we make at work." He's promised to make them for us so we can compare. The complimentary chips and salsa were pretty good, though most of the chips were pieces too small for dipping. The music was a nice mix of traditional and contemporary Mexican, and not too loud. This is first time we have come here, we're on our way to a family function and decided to stop here for bite on our way. Mexican food is hit or miss on the road. We were glad to have found a cute place with great food and great service. I had the Carintas bowl and my husband had the Chipotle chicken enchiladas. They were both very good but my husband is a big guy who said he could have eaten another enchilada. We ordered half and half tea which was also good , not a mix. If I could give this place 10 stars, I would! The atmosphere when you walk in is very warm and inviting. There's some very cool artwork and decor around the restaurant. The employees were wonderful, our server was Kim, and she was fantastic! Kim went above and beyond making sure everything was perfect, which it was. We ordered the tropical ceviche, burrito and tostone cups filled with beef. I don't know the exact name of the dishes but OMG, the tostones cups were memorable. Ceviche was so fresh! Casa AZul is located near the Catawba Valley Memorial Hospital in Hickory on Fairgrove Church Road. It has a nice-sized parking lot and looks to be a refurbished fast food restaurant. They've done amazing things on the inside, so you are transported to a Mexican kitchen and not a KFC. Staff is kind and efficient, helping each other out to get the customers fed and taken care of. They are all poised to help you make a decision about what you'd like to eat with great suggestions. We've eaten here twice now and both times the food was just incredible. The chicken taquitos were crispy and flavorful, full of tender chicken. They cover it with a chipotle sauce and cotija crumbles. The Mahi Mahi tacos are some of the best I've had anywhere. The fish itself was so flavorful, not just the breading. They top the tacos with a pickled cabbage which really amps up the flavor and finish with that chipotle sauce. The chips and salsa are my favorites around the area. Chips taste fresh and are lighter than normal. Salsa is perfectly flavorful without being too hot to blow your palate. The queso dip is a perfect accompaniment to the salsa, it is creamy and thinner, which is my preference. I have a clumpy cheese dip. Arroz con pollo was simple: Chicken with rice and cheese dip. That's it, but it was so good! The chicken pieces are griddled on a flat top so get a gorgeous browned color which also adds flavor. Finally, a misunderstanding gave us our best dish for the night. My son ordered what he thought was barria tacos, but they brought him a plate full of meat! 5 different kinds with a side of elote, rice and charro beans. Every single thing was amazing. OMG Plantains they are delicious!! They offer plantains as a side option but also offer rice and beans like normal Mexican restaurants. Tried this place for lunch and was happy we did. The place is very bright and cheerful with a ton of color in the decor. The staff was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed.
