Good food, good service and a nice happy hour. A very nice salsa bar. Altogether a nice ambience.

It's easy to find and there is plenty of parking. There are spaces adjacent to the building as well as across a traffic lane. There are handicapped spaces adjacent to building right next to entrance. The host counter is right in front as you walk in. We were greeted immediately and taken to a booth. Seating is mostly tables as well as booths along the walls. There is also a patio on the side of the building. Our server came by a couple minutes after we were seated to take our drink orders. While waiting on the drinks I grabbed a few different salsas from the salsa bar. The salsa selection is good and there are a lot of different options. Once our drinks came and we made the food order, we waited another 10 minutes or so for it to arrive. That was the last time we saw our server until the end of our meal. My dining partner ordered the Chili relleno. While a decent size, the dish was subpar. The beef filling was quite dry and there was no to very little cheese inside. The meat filling was ground beef with minimal seasoning. This was a very bland dish. The Mexican street tacos (one each of beef, pork, and chicken) came with beans and a Cesar salad. The beans were fine as was the salad. The tacos all had a chipotle sauce added which was fine, but I would have preferred the option of adding different salsas from the salsa bar without the chipotle sauce already added. Unfortunately, all three meats were slightly dry and were very bland. The other ingredients were fine, and the flavor of each taco was greatly enhanced by adding different salsa options from bar, even over the chipotle sauce. This made the dish palatable. It appears the menu has been "Americanized" and lacks true Mexican authenticity. While it is acceptable for what it is, authentic Mexican food can be found in abundance just a half mile away. read more

Stopped into El Paso in Conover looking for a solid meal and left impressed. We shared the El Mexicano and added black tiger shrimp cooked in guajillo-style sauce -- easily the highlight of the meal. Drinks were on point (especially the horchata), and the salsa bar had multiple options worth trying. Service was kind, attentive, and never rushed. We did come with a large crowd and I fully understand that it comes with certainty comprises in service. However when everyone at the table is finishing their dinner and I still have not received my food is a bit more than one would expect. When I asked the manager for some compensation since my group was ready to leave and I still did not have my food. All I got was "let me see where your food is." I do not recommend this restaurant as they are neither concerned that their customers are taken care of or doing anything to make things right. read more

I wasn't expecting much when I arrived here, coming from a big city that's full of mediocre Mexican food it was hard to imagine a small town like Newton would have a really decent spot, but I was wrong! The salsa bar is extensive, almost all of the ones I tried were quite good and full of flavor. Use the filters on Yelp and search for outdoor seating + open now and find this gem. It's very close to the I 40, has a nice patio and plenty of parking. The service was friendly and quite attentive. The dishes are huge and very tasty. We got the shrimp and steak combo and the ranchera steak. I was expecting some middle of nowhere Mexican that would be just ok at best, and was pretty blown away. This place was packed on a Friday night! The parking lot is huge so no need to worry about that. I ordered the Burrito Mexico, which was around ~10. I wasn't expecting it to be so big! I gave them three stars because of the music they play over the speakers. The food is excellent, the service is very good. They recently remodeled. Including the bathrooms. The remodel is lovely. If that was the only prices to consider they get five stars. However the loud Mexican accordion music is enough to make me think twice about eating there ever again. We have been customers of theirs since before they opened the Conover location. I have never had a bad meal or service. We went for lunch the other day. And it was song after song by of accordion music. Turned up to hard to hear conversation level. One of those songs is more than enough. As I said I will think twice about going back. read more

We really used to eat here often. Something has changed and their food is not so good. One of the waiters shared it was due to whoever was running the kitchen that night. The kitchen should have consistency no matter what! I've read numerous reviews which expound this as a top notch Mexican restaurant. I can honestly say Not even close. We grew up in Southern California at a time when most everything was in Spanish and English. Taquitos were an appetizer that cost a buck for two. Even Dairy Queen had taquitos on their menu! There was never rice in burritos, rice was always a side dish. Their salsa verde is mediocre. Salsa was always at a bar letting folks know the type and heat. The mole isn't quite right. Their carnitas lack the crispness that makes slow cooked pork carnitas. And for the several dishes that start with California- well maybe they really should say Texas...since it ain't CaliMex food The woman who makes their corn tortillas is outstanding as are her fresh tortillas! As far as I can deduce since all the Mexican restaurants in Catawba County have become similar, is they've catered to the Southern gringos so they can remain open. Or the owners come from a different region from the Mexicans in Southern California. Or perhaps they're not Mexican, but some other Hispanic country down in South America. I am giving El Paso five stars because it is the best Mexican restaurant in the Hickory Area. This location is newer than the one in Hickory, but they are both top notch. The food is very good and you get plenty of it. All of the workers are from Mexico or other central/south American countries. I say that to reassure skeptical first timers on its authenticity. The service is fast and friendly. Most dishes are $10 or less with a few others staying under the $20 mark. They have a bar with plenty of mixed drinks and beers. The decor is nice and comfortable for all. I recommend the tortas for guys or daring ladies. It has plenty of everything and you will leave stuff. I have always enjoyed all of the dishes I have purchased and would recommend this place to everyone. Last thing, My sister does not like Mexican restaurants and she loves this place. Lots of cars in the parking lot. Service was not great. We sat outside so maybe that was the reason. When we sat down we received chips, no salsa. Had to flag down a waiter to ask for salsa. Food was ok. My sons plate had unmelted cheese in his burrito. Once we finished eating we had to go inside and ask for our check after waiting about 20 minutes. Overall it was so-so. Not great. The food always seems to be hit and miss, but when they miss it still tastes like every other Mexican restaurant. You are easily forgotten about, by your server, no matter when you go. I've been eating here for years and I've never had a problem. Of course, if you go at a busy time such as dinner, service is going to be a bit slow, but that's most restaurants. El Paso gets insanely packed around dinner, especially on weekends, and it's hard to even find a place to park. Could it possibly be because their food is just simply amazing? Yes! Waiters and waitresses can only do so much, but they try as hard as they can to keep every single one of their customers happy. Everything I have ever ordered has been so tasty and always came in such large proportions. Nobody in my family has ever been able to finish our plates, and we always leave with to go boxes. My favorite go-to thing to order is the ACP. Chicken breast meat over Mexican rice, smothered in Queso. You can get it with the grilled vegetables or without, I prefer without. It's always cooked to perfection and packed with flavor, even though the dish itself is incredibly simple. Another thing that I am a big fan of is guacamole. El Paso's guacamole is puréed, not chunky, and super fresh. Tortilla dishes usually come with a small side of guacamole, ACP does not. Aside from the amazing food, they also have a full bar, and a small salsa bar as well. We came here pretty late on a Friday for a rehearsal dinner. There were over 10 of us and the place was still packed but we were sat in less than 10 minutes, which I thought was awesome. The lady waiting on us handled the group well by herself. More and more Mexican restaurants are starting to have salsa bars and this one was top-notch! I was obsessed with the cabbage mixture and the pickled onions. (Yes, I'm weird) There was also the option to get a bigger bowl so I filled it up with regular salsa and shared it with the bride and bridesmaids. I went with my usual, tacos de carnitas, and while I wish the carnitas were a little bit crispier, they were still really good. I had filled up on so much dang cabbage salsa and chips that I could only eat one taco but my second favorite way to eat tacos is to eat them cold so this works out in my favor. read more

They deliver hot bean dip with your chips and have a salsa bar. If you get a large beer you better be ready to drink. Its every bit of 24oz. We decided if we ordered our meal for takeout, we'd avoid the bad service issue. I won't go into details but unfortunately, even the takeout service was very...very bad.
