Very good food if your eating unhealthy for a change. I knew that walking in the door. My issue was that we waited to order after we got our appetizers and we should have called ahead so we only had to wait another 30 minutes instead of an hour. Lots of food, decent prices. I can honestly say, they serve the best Chicken Fried Steak I've had in 15 years. I don't eat beef often, I usually like it smoked to perfection. I had of course heard of Mary's. I'm trying to write this review as if sweetie had just seen the giant billboards and decided to stop. The town is very cute. The restaurant has that cool small town gathering spot kind of feel. No wait, we got right in and were served our teas. We went with the CFS (Duh!). It wasn't very pretty on the plate, but was fine after we plopped the thick gravy all over them. It was different. It was very good. I have had very few that were better. The salad was good, and the mashed taters were on point. Desserts looked good, we didn't have any. We got the small, and it was plenty. I have been told by many people to try this place and have the chicken fried steak. Have to admit- It is a true Texan place to eat- "small town, southern cooking" It was delicious and they were quick to serve us on a holiday weekend! We ordered 3 large chicken fried steaks to split between our table. ( we paid $2.00 extra for plates and it was well worth it)- we stll had PLENTY of food! It was juicy, tender and scrumptious! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because we were seated next to someone who was smoking. Wow! First thing you need to know is that the portions are very large! I'm sure my husband and I could have easily split a large order of chicken fried steak (um, yah, best ever!!). I want to start by saying, don't expect the best service you've ever had here. This place is always packed, and in turn the wait staff is always busy. But it's worth it. The first time we came here we were not impressed. It was late at night, and the lights were dark. Food was subpar. The second time we are here we were blown away. Great chicken fried steak, fried green beans and fried pies. Beer is always cold. We were in a table in the middle of the room. At most restaurants you are served a super thin piece of some kind of meat with a huge greasy crust. Not here, the meat is BEEF with a thin coating cooked like CFS should be cooked in an iron skillet. Gravy was just like my Mama makes, delicious!! We drove from Dallas and definitely worth the drive. You can order small, medium, or large. I split the medium with my daughter. We had so much left, we could have ordered a small and still had left overs. The steak was well seasoned and well cooked. I have been craving Mary's CFS for months I absolutely love there food. I made a reservation arrived they seated us quickly after that it all went wrong. 5 people 5 CFS dinners after waiting for 1 hr our food started to arrive One person received their chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes I received a large chicken fried steak no sides no gravy for any of us. About a half hour later and asking several times for gravy the others received their dinner with no gravy. I never received my sides everybody else started eating now after an hour and a half I still only had chicken fried steak sitting in front of me with no sides no gravy I ask at least five times for the gravy. My friends at the table gave me some french fries and when The waitress brought me the bill I reminded her again that I did not get my sides also my husband ordered beans and cornbread and did not receive them they were on the bill and we had to ask her to take them off. We have eaten there several times and never have we gotten our food so sporadically it was not that busy for normal Sunday so I'm not sure what in the world was going on also we had to ask the lady cleaning the tables to bring us tea because we had asked for tea several times as well read more

Given this is on about every "best chicken fried steak in Texas" list I've ever read we went a little out of our way on a road trip to see for ourselves. Disappointed. The CFS was tender which is great but wasn't at all crispy and was under seasoned. The mashed potatoes were dry and terribly chunky. The fries were great and the salad was actually quite good. The portions are huge, but they do charge $2 to share a plate (fair enough). The service wasn't great but they were already pretty busy at 11:15am on a Thursday. Biggest and best chicken fried steak I have ever had!!! Gravy & baked potato were delicious! I rarely can say I walk away from restaurant ordering only one entree and say I feel full....I did here! If your looking for 5 star atmosphere this is not your place, you will be disappointed. It's down home cooking!!! Great little atmosphere in a cute little town! We went to explore the Brazos River today after massive rain totals and ended up here for a late lunch. My son had the burger which was H U G E and delish. Let's just say he was silent the entire meal, very busy chowing down. My husband and I split a medium chicken fry which was just right for us. If you want a chicken fried steak, this is definitely the place to go. It's definitely a rustic hole in the wall but you will be satisfied.

We took a drive out just to try their chicken fried steak. The steak was very flat and tender and there wasn't too much breaking on it. I thought it was excellent. Our friend ordered the 2 lb burger which was enormous! We actually saw someone eat the entire thing, but we were only able to eat about 1/3 of it. Great place to go. read more

We stopped in on our way to Ft Worth and it was well worth the detour! I've both got the small chicken fried steak and it was plenty of food! The mashed potatoes were really good and the gravy was just fantastic. Only disappointment was the salad, which was just shredded lettuce with a few diced tomatoes on top. Arrived at 1pm and was told to seat myself, a few min. go by and a girl came by asking what I would like to drink. My response was I'd like a glass of water and a small chicken fry. Travelers beware!! This restaurant caters to locals and leaves out travelers who stop in to try their supposed 'famous chicken fried steak.' We are a family of 5 from Dallas stopping in after a weekend hunt in West TX. The hour long wait to be seated was totally acceptable; however the hour and a half we waited for food we never got was not. There were several other patrons seated after us who received their food and after finally asking the waitress to please check on our order (after we'd been waiting over an hour), the waitress mentioned that Mary, the owner, made sure those patrons who she knows are served/eat first. We left and spoke to Mary who did offer our food to-go for free...fair enough but too late. Good grief, the couple sitting behind us even noticed they were served before us and made a comment about how they noticed it as we were leaving. We wasted two and a half hours there and this is what I'm left with....more time wasted constructing a bad yelp review in hopes it prevents other travelers from falling victim. Ive never posted anything on yelp until this incident. I am going to make sure all of our friends in Dallas know about how Mary's Café treats travelers and warn them never to stop and risk wasting such a large chunk of time on something that turns out meaningless. By the way, one of the nice waitresses who noticed how long we were there even came out behind us and said sorry and mentioned that the Greyhound gas station next door has good burgers even though you wouldn't think so. Since we were starving we stopped in the Greyhound and they were nice and burgers were good!!! Guess I should give them a review next!
