Went for dinner on a reservation. Which when we got there noticed that it was mostly empty. So reservations were really not needed. The one waitress that was working mentioned that they only had 3 left of the special for that night at 5:30pm. Really didn't understand why so little when very few customers. Husband ordered walleye and I ordered the panko Parmesan cod. With an app of cheese curds. The cheese curds were very oily so not off to good start. My cod was very dried out and seeing that there was melted butter on my plate is the only thing that helped to choke down the few bites I had. My baked potato was very dry as well and nothing, not even the butter and sour cream could help it. I didn't even try the vegetables as they didn't look appetizing. My husband said his walleye wasn't very good either. The appearance of the restaurant was ok, but when we first got there husband had to us bathroom and said the toilet seat had crap smeared on the set and on the floor. He pulled the waitress aside and let her know of the condition and came to the table I was sat at. When we were finished eating 45-1:00 later, he went to blow his nose and nope the bathroom was still a mess. Would I recommend this restaurant to anyone? No, it was all around a bad experience and we are folks that like to give non chain restaurants a chance. read more

Well, found an unexpected gem in Onalaska. This place is small, quiet, almost romantic.. We started with the blue chips... yum! House made potato chips, covered in crumbled bleu cheese and drizzled with a balsamic glaze... nachos style.. damn. Very creatice. Delicious! I opted for the Jam Burger.. a burger, cooked exactly how I ordered it, medium rare, with caramelized onions, fig jam and gouda cheese... Wow!!! It was as delicious and unusual as it sounds. What a great combo. I can only mention a few negatives... but not worth losing a star..could have been an off day.. and I have this 'complaint' about a lot of places... the food didn't come out piping hot! Ugh! Oh, and they serve pepsi products.. lol.. not much we can do about that. Overall, excellent and I hope to visit again soon. read more

Mary Cody's reminds me of a restaurant you would see on "Restaurant Impossible". The space itself is split into a bar at the entrance with a restaurant in the back, a family friendly layout I guess. However the decor is unbelievably drab. I can just imagine Robert Irvine walking in and removing all the ancient dusty "Italian" decor which he would refer to as the "dust collectors". The ambiance overall is a bit dark and dreary. As far as food, nothing on the menu blew me away. Very Cheesecake Factory vibes or what Robert Irvine would refer to as an "identity crisis". The menu seems to be a jack of all trades but a master of none. Also, the menu is categorized by poultry, beef/pork, seafood, etc., a bit odd. Service was meh, slow, nothing memorable. I recently started coming here and while I've only been here twice I would definitely give it a 4.5/5. The food was priced fairly especially because it was really good ! I've tried a few different items off the menu and have loved everything. The staff was very friendly which made the experience that much better. Ive only been twice but i think this is my new breakfast spot. Ive asked to sit by the window in the bar each time. such a nice place to sit. Really genuine people working, food has been Fantastic each time. i am a vegetarian. hard to find creative and inventive breakfast options in the area for a very fair price. Artichoke spinach , and the veggie skillets were spectacular! I hope to go back each sun day from now on. when its busy food takes awhile (as it should) . the atmosphere makes you want to stay awhile. its worth the wait. i cant wait to try the Caprese skillet next sunday after the holidays. read more

The server was the bartender and she did as good of a job as she could considering she was the only one working at the time we were there. It was early Saturday evening around 4:45pm and it was not busy. Like I said, the service was really good as she was pleasant and made a good drink. However, the food was very over cooked. The four of us each ordered our meat (2 steaks and two burgers) either medium or medium rare. Each of our meat entrees was well over cooked. One burger was so over cooked it was a hockey puck. I just cannot get over how over cooked everything was, especially since we specified we all wanted medium or medium rare. I would like to give a higher rating, however the food was simply not good. I do think that they probably specialize providing breakfast. But seriously, how difficult is it to not over cook a burger,especially when we were the only table in the restaurant? We will not be back for food, however the bar is nice. read more

This was our first visit to Mary Cody's. We were expecting a cafe, but we were delightfully surprised that it was an elegant restaurant. Our server was very attentive, and after she described the special we had no doubt that we want to try it. The food was delicious. Stopped here to meet my boyfriend for my lunch break from work. I work close by so thought we'd try it as Senor Villa was packed and we wanted something faster than David Reays. Yikes. We were the third table in the whole place but had to wait 20 minutes to put in an order. Waiter forgot about my coffee and then comp'd it which was nice but I didn't want it anymore since I'd have to eat my food super fast to get back to work. I got the pub burger and the only flavor i tasted was nearly raw hamburger. The fries were super plain and flavorless as well. The potato skins were okay and my boyfriend said his Philly sandwich was okay but Pepsi was super flat. The staff was nice but we won't be back. read more

Everyone bite was as delicious as the last! We went on a Friday night for fish. We had 1 piece of cod and 4 jumbo shrimp, a beef soup that was fricking amazing, and for dessert we had apple crisp a la mode. I will never forget this amazing meal. We won't be back. The service was terrible: the place was half-full and it took 10 minutes for a server to ask for a drink order. Food was so-so. One of us had a pancake and it was terrible. We were slowing down (but not quite done) and the waitress walked over and just took our plates away! I had half of my meal left (I can only slowly eat small meals) and she never asked if we were done or wanted a box.... it was the weirdest dining experience! If there was a way to give this place a less than 1 star review, I would. The service from my server was good and she was lovely, but everything else from this dining experience was a complete nightmare. For starters, the man behind the bar was yelling obnoxiously, and was very noticeably drunk. And I'm not sure if the bartender was a manager, owner or what but I overheard him speaking to my server so disrespectfully. He was yelling at her loudly about things that I can't imagine were her fault. Back to the experience: The food I received was not only overpriced for the portion, but had multiple strands of hair in it. Not to mention fruit flies invaded the entire restaurant. I politely told our server about the hair in my food and she took it away to speak to the bartender. I then overheard the bartender again yelling at the server - as if the food having hair in it was her fault. RIDICULOUS. I advised the server to find work elsewhere because I felt so bad for her. Just had Mary Cody's most flavorful, "butter knife" tender 8 oz. tenderloin served with the spinach salad and balsamic vinaigrette - Wow! The flavors were superb! Tried this place for the first time for Sunday lunch. The hostess was courteous and we were able to sit where ever we wanted as it was not very busy. I was surprised by the warm and cozy atmosphere inside, very inviting. Our waitress was prompt and friendly, and she gave us ample time to review the menu when we told her it was our first time there. I ordered Eggs Benedict which came with hash browns and my friend ordered the Philly Steak sandwich with home made fries. The eggs were poached to my order, not over done. The hollandaise sauce was also reportedly home made but I've had better. The philly steak was good but small as compared to other restaurants. It was still an adequate portion. Home made fries were good. Overall it was pretty good, but not to-die-for. The waitress raved about their fish fry and special occasion brunch which I would like to try sometime soon. Yuck. My husband and I went on our monthly date dinner to Mary Cody's. The website portrayed it to be an upscale eating establishment with high end, high priced food and $200 bottles of wine. It was not up to our expectations. I don't know who would linger over an expensive bottle of wine there. It smelled like cigarette smoke when we first walked in. The decor of the restaurant bespoke of a high end establishment, but the blaring 70's music was totally out of place. The waitress was very sweet, but did not know much about anything. We left with stomach aches and gas from the badly prepared food and cheap oil. We will never go back. If you want to spend that kind of money, go to the Waterfront of LeChateau. read more

The food- fish, baked potato, coleslaw, chicken/basil pesto sandwich and Westby cheese curds were perfect! Good fresh food, served hot and served in a timely manner. We come to Mary Cody's for Friday Fish, which we love. We have been coming to this restaurant for about a year on Friday's and now Saturdays. We enjoy the atmosphere, quick service and quality food. Six of us tried Mary Cody's Saturday night and were astounded by the terrible service and inedible food. We had reservations for 6pm; we waited to be seated and then waited for a server. Then we waited longer for our drinks, our salads and finally our meals. It's a shame that we bothered since the food was horrible. I ordered chicken marsala which ended up being a dry chicken breast w/two slices of mushroom and sliced garlic. No sauce whatsoever. The vegetables were overcooked and over seasoned and the potatoes were cold. I sent my dinner back which I've never done before. My husband got the mac and rack and said the it was the worst he's ever tasted. Two friends ordered the steak sandwich which was so tough they could barely eat it and the bun was dry and hard. Another friend ordered the ribeye special and got it overdone and grey. The server did apologize, didn't charge me for my chicken, and gave me a $10 gift certificate which was very nice, but that doesn't excuse the experience. We don't go out often and we chose Mary Cody's out of a lot of restaurants and it was a dismal evening. read more
