This restaurant is a "distant cousin" to one of my all time favorites for breakfast , Marvin's in downtown Novato. So I am having a tough time writing this review. I was told, that in the beginning, they had the same ownership but, that changed years ago. Service was excellent and the breakfast good. Marvin's Cotati has a decidedly Mexican influence and we are no "rascists" by any means. My wife's Huevos Rancheros are not what she is traditionally used to. My chicken fried steak and eggs were good but the home fries were burnt . At 10AM in the morning they were very busy and this is a popular spot. Prices are cheaper than Marvin's Novato, but, that doesn't matter to us; we are quality driven with high standards. We won't go back but, we enjoyed our breakfast read more

We went to Marvin's for the first time after I had purchased a gift certificate from Restaurant.com. We arrived just before 7 AM. and received prompt service. The coffee was good, and there were a lot of different breakfast choices. I had the Strawberry French Toast, without whipped cream, and was surprised at the huge portions! It was very filling, and the strawberries tasted fresh rather than refrigerated. My son had the strawberry waffle and was very happy with his choice. The gift certificate was accepted without question, which was nice, sometimes I've received weird service after presenting the certificates at other restaurants. I will definitely keep Marvin's in mind the next time we want to have breakfast out. read more

I have been to Marvin's several times for breakfast and the food is always delicious, the service is great. Recently I needed a meeting space for a small group and recalled Marvin's having a back room that was fairly private. For 2 months now my Meetup has been meeting in Marvin's back room for lunch every week and it has been fantastic! It is a very casual atmosphere, clean, but no frills, and the food has been great! The back room is down the hallway from the bathroom and is a completely separate room, so you do need to call ahead to reserve it so they can turn on the heat and set it up since it is basically 'overflow' seating but we love it. The soups are always very popular and I have brought home kids lunches for my kids and they love the chicken strips and fries. The fries are the thick dinner fries. Very good, simple place to eat. No need to dress up but you won't be disappointed in the food or service. read more

Maybe I caught them on a bad day? Not even a bad day, just a "not so 5-star" day. The Good: This place was very clean, the food was hot, the jam was delicious, the portions were generous. My son ordered the short stack and he said the pancakes were delicious. The So-So: It was loud! I figured on a Sunday morning it was filled with people happily enjoying their brekkie so I couldn't really be mad about it. It just made speaking with my hubby a bit difficult. No worries. :-) Most of the food was very well cooked but unbelievably bland. I'm talking absolutely no salt or pepper or seasoning of any kind. Bummer!! It all looked so good but just a flavor flop. My hubby's chicken fried steak was a bit overcooked. His gravy was also super bland. The Bad: We had never been before so I was unaware that they have a "seat yourself" vibe happening. The woman who saw us standing there was lovely, however, and directed us to a booth. Our server was another matter. I'm not sure if she was having a bad day or simply doesn't smile. When she gave us our food she opted to not tell us whose toast was whose so we got to play toast roulette. No water refills so rationing was interesting. At the end we waited a painfully long time for our check. All in all it wasn't horrible but it wasn't amazing. Best ribeye steak and eggs around. The issue, as others have mentioned is the noise. You cannot converse with your company, you have to yell to be heard. It's a shame. There are so many decorative noise reduction products available for them. Still, go during the off hours. It's worth it. read more

The breakfast dish I ordered both times we dined here seemed fresh but had very little flavor (farmers Benedict, or something like that). The most frustrating part was that we had to wait very long for our food. I was ready to leave by the time it arrived both times. The first time I figured they were a little busy, but not super busy, so I gave them another shot when it was not as busy. But this second time the wait was even longer. Finally a restaurant that knows how to cook eggs (any style). This is my absolute favorite breakfast/brunch restaurant. I came here on a Sunday with a large group of people (one of whom had never had an American DIner experience). It's very typical middle America diner look and feel. We were seated as soon as we walked in, but it took a while for our server to come over. It wasn't particularly busy, but there were only two ladies doing all the footwork out there, so it was understandable. We ordered the buttermilk pancakes, the garden omelet, a chicken salad and another special house salad. The pancakes were great, but everything else was just blah. I've been to places that put their heart and soul into their breakfasts and you can taste it. I was very disappointed with the food. Overall, it was just, "Meh, I've experience better," I don't think I would come back here. read more

Good ol' fashion diner. Average prices for dinner, but above average food. Better than most other diner spots in the surrounding area. I definitely enjoyed the old fashioned look inside, especially the low sitting bar in the middle where people ate and had their coffee. My daughter & I ate here about a month ago. She ordered a waffle and did not enjoy it. It was thin & soggy, yet dense. I ordered an omelet w/hash browns. My omelet was runny (gross) and the hash browns were under cooked, yet stale. Also very salty. Everything seemed to have a film of stickiness....tables, chairs, menus & condiments. We're regulars. I really like the Ranch Omelet even though its too much food. My husband will either get the huevos ranchos or eggs Benedict, or a burger of some sort. Even the regular eggs, potatoes, meat n toast breakfast for $6.50 is really satisfying. Good Thanksgiving brand coffee around $2.25 w/ bottomless refills. The fresh squeezed OJ is TO die for. I think its $4 or $5 for a large but so so worth it as you'll finish the regular size and want another. It has to be the fresh squeezed OJ though, make sure to ask for fresh squeezed and if they are out - don't bother. And they have great jams too. This place reminds me of the great greasy spoon breakfast joints I used to go to as a kid where you'd pay maybe $3 for breakfast and it was so good and filling you didn't need lunch. This place has gone downhill over the years. It used to be the place to eat in Cotati but now they are so disorganized and well, unsanitary that i cannot take my family back. We waited at our table with not even waters for 25 minutes while the "host" sat and served others. We wondered if they didn't like us for some reason but we were going fairly regularly until this year and I think I'd know if I had. It seems like they are there for certain people only and I'm not one of them. They also just let dirty dishes pile up on tables without clearing them even when people are waiting to be seated. Marvins is my ultimate favorite cozy spot in Sonoma county. The service, the coffee, the food & the atmosphere are all what screams breakfast to me. Coming from NJ and having diners on every corner, Marvin's brings a little sense of home to me. I have been here more times than I should admit, and I have never had a bad meal. It's local, it's friendly, and it's always busy! The SOUTHERN SKILLET is my absolute favorite!! They're taco bowls & burgers are good for lunch as well. I have been coming here for over 10yrs plus. I have never received either bad service or average food. That's tough to beat. Portion size is enough to feed a hungover college student because no matter how delicious the food is, there is only so much I can eat and I end up taking left overs home for lunch or linner. Another place I really wanted to like but unfortunately it just didn't work out that way. Our server was pleasant enough, not all that attentive but that's not the concern. The main issue is the food. We ordered breakfast: biscuits, gravy, eggs, and bacon for me & the Cotati Scramble for my wife (consisted of chicken sausage, artichoke hearts, cheddar cheese, eggs, spinach, and potatoes) My biscuits were cold, hard, and quite brittle in an unpleasant way. The gravy was very bland and reminded me of middle school. Again, not a good reminder from a food perspective so I opted to heavily doctor with salt & pepper as well as copious amounts tabasco sauce underneath the 2 eggs over easy that I decided to slap on top of this concoction. My wife's dish wasn't as good as mine. The artichoke hearts overpowered everything, but the mix of ingredients was completely off from the start. It never really made sense eventhough it sounded like a good idea on the menu. Eggs had zero seasoning/flavor, cheddar was very bland, and it seemed like the solution the artichoke hearts came in was used for cooking: not good. The chicken sausage was actually pretty good! My gut tells me they'd be great but I couldn't tell amidst the odd mashup of the rest of the scramble. Potatoes were also cold, undercooked, and lacking any flavor until I again grabbed the tabasco. Overall we got the impression the cooks were simply cooking food they'd been told to cook, yet failing to taste what they send out. We didn't see a manager anywhere - just waitstaff and back of house staff. The part we found odd was how busy this place was. We'll give Redwood Cafe a shot next time but thus far the best tasting breakfast we've found in Rohnert Park thus far has been Big Daddy's on Golf Course & Country Club. Sorry Marvin's. First time at Marvin's today and we will be back. Yes, it's a country style diner, so no, it's not fancy. It's good diner food with good service. I appreciated that it was a bit noisy because I have two small children and we felt comfortable not worrying about their noise (which isn't a lot most of the time when dining out, but sometimes it is hard to control how much noise a baby makes). Service was attentive even though the place was fairly busy. We had breakfast at lunchtime. Hubby tried the Eggs Benedict, which he and I both enjoyed. Great ham and yummy Hollandaise. I had the biscuits/gravy with scrambled eggs and bacon. I asked for my bacon crispy and it was fantastic. The eggs were typical for diner scrambled eggs. The biscuits were great. The gravy was ok - LOTS of it. Wasn't as salty as I would have liked, but that's easily remedied. For the kids we ordered the kids waffle combo with sausage and the Teddy Bear pancake. It was all served hot and tasted good. First time I'm had waffles at a diner that I actually liked. And the fruit bowls they give you are loaded, not just 4 little pieces of fruit like we've had other places. One downer for parents with infants: No changing table in the restroom. While it's not always a necessity, sometimes you have no choice but to change baby during or after a meal. read more

I have eaten here twice, both times for breakfast. I believe they only do breakfast and lunch as it's a bakery and only open until 3pm. During the week, the crowd is mostly seniors, as it should be. In fact, I think both times I came here was on a Monday. I can't get out early on the weekends because I work, so it must have been. Yep. ANYWAY, their New York Strip Steak and Eggs is really good. My mom got the Sirloin or maybe Prime Rib and she said it was a little tough, and they had forgotten to cut off some of the really thick cartilage that can't be chewed, but otherwise it was pretty good. Their French Toast is like, Toasty, and they have a really nice wait staff. Plus, the little statue guy at the entrance who holds the newspapers is cute. The decor leaves something to be desired...I'm not a HUGE fan of roosters, and I honestly have seen them in just about every country-style breakfast place I've been in, plus the drapes are a little dusty and the chairs and booths could use a sprucing up. Marvin's is a casual friendly cafe serving fresh breakfast and lunch food. We go there often for one reason, they have coupons for "buy one menu item and 2 drinks and get the other menu item free". This is very helpful for families, local students and seniors. Second, dogs are allowed on the patio under the shade of umbrellas while we eat, many times the food server will bring out water for the dogs. The most important thing is the food is fresh not premade of frozen and the staff is friendly and will make substitutions of menu items when asked. Some of our favorite items are the taco salad and steak and eggs. The menu features many breakfast items, including french toast, pancakes, hash brown potatoes, a wide selection of omelets and other egg dishes. The lunch menu includes hamburgers, sandwiches, salads and specialty dishes all for a bargain price. The decor is country, valance curtains, a plate rail surrounding the upper part of the walls decorated with rooster statues and other country items which for Cotati fits right in. There are booths next to the windows with tables in the center and a counter with stools running almost the full length of the restaurant. They have a back room for more seating. Check it out sometime on a warm afternoon and enjoy a tall glass of iced tea. Would I tell my friends about Marvin's? Yes Would I go there again? Yes Is it expensive?
