I'm a tourist/visitor in the area for a wedding. So this dinky very causal place was great for a large group, and simple items. I can't determine if this place is better than another. Serve yourself but overall it's slow. If you're down to support and OG place not expect much, this place is it. This place is known for their garlic cheeseburger? Friends got those, tenderloin and other items. For a dairy sensitive person, I stuck to the salad. The staff was willing to show me the large salad dressing to read the ingredients on my own. This place does remind me of a local sandwich place near my old college campus. Glad we can support a local place. read more

Aweful! GCB, with cheese please...No cheese. Chicken tenders that we didn't order, Cold burgers, cold fries, cold onion rings waited 15 minutes to get cheese but had to go up and ask about it and it had been just sitting on the counter...are these people stoned? How difficult is it? Marvin's is a college dive but since my husband grew up in Greencastle it's his choice whenever we visit so he can get a GCB. I decided it had been awhile since I've had a tenderloin so I ordered one and a side of fried mushrooms. I was very upset with the tenderloin as it was super thin and extremely well done so it didn't have much flavor and was hard to eat. The mushrooms in the ranch were amazing as always though! We went on a Friday night about 830 which surprisingly it was dead. Not sure if they had a football game or not but we still had quite the wait despite the vacant ness. This isn't the first time we've eaten at Marvin's but it was definitely my least impressed visit. read more

The greasy spoon college kids love. Must have iron stomach or be in need of an increase in your cholesterol to eat here. Everyone raves about the GCB, or Garlic Cheeseburger for those not familiar with the lingo.. it is a wonderful thing to have for dinner if you want to ward off mosquitos and vampires. Satisfaction guaranteed!! Other big hits include the fried Mac bites and gooey cheese fries. These are not to be missed if you are a lover of orange cheese. Pizzas are also popular. Unless you know where to find Marvin's it's location can be elusive. No big marquee on the outside.. just a small plaque set in The brick exterior in the front porch. To help you find your way, follow the signs to the public library. It is right next door. Crowd here will include DePauw students; construction workers and teenagers. DePauw alumni also frequent the establishment, especially on game days, to re-live the celebrated past of their youth. Small outdoor seating on the porch is nice. Indoors large booths and tables with many televisions and memorabilia dominate the space. It can be hard to find a clean table so be prepared to clear one yourself. Ordering takes place at the counter and food brought to you. Service mimics the Dick's Last Resort type but not on purpose. Asking for anything other than the usual is treated as a bother. As an example, I asked for cheese to be on the side of my fries instead of smothered. A exasperated breath was heaved by the server. Fries were brought with cheese dripping anyway. No use in complaining, it's just the way it is at Marvin's. Take it or leave it. They do plenty of business without any accommodations. LOL read more

I have heard about this place for a long time from a co worker and finally I get to try it out. After a long day on the pitch I stopped in and was ready to go after the garlic cheeseburger. The menu is simple and ordering at the counter was easy. The food is a little like bar food but the simplicity of it all is what I seem to like on a HOT Saturday after a long match. The seating inside is limited so if you come make sure that you plan ahead. Marvin's is also just off campus to the north and is usually busy. If you would like to try something when in Greencastle give it a shot! I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It's inexpensive and delicious. read more

Mehhhh. This is not the best garlic cheeseburger around...or even in Greencastle city limits! Great selection of greasy fried food! You name it, you got it. Their pizza is actually my favorite thing on their menu. They do serve beer, that's a plus. It is an easy hangout and cool place to be for High School kids and College kids. Just not somewhere I would drive to from out of town......Or eat at sober. :-) I'll give them a nice high five for being open for so long! That is a plus! A Greencastle/Depauw institution. Garlic Cheeseburger (aka GCB). 'Nuff said. It's total greasy-spoon fare, but it's become something magical here. Take 2 hamburger patties, fry them with cheese on top, and lay them side-by-side on a hoagie roll. Then cover it in garlic salt. Heaven. And it's cheap. The decor isn't anything to write home about, but be sure to walk around and check out all the pictures of students/ex-students from around the world with their "Marvin's Delivers To (insert location here)" signs. read more

Marvin's famous GCB isn't really a GCB at all, but a CB on GB. There's nothing particularly garlicky (or good) about the burger itself, which has the look of plastic, the feel of cardboard, and the taste of sawdust. But the bread is tasty, interesting, and spiced appropriately for the occasion. I do, however, wish that the patty and the cheese had a little bit less of that 'we-were-fresh-grilled...yesterday' look and taste to them. Instead, the cheese, which had clearly been melted at one stage in its uninteresting life, was fully re-hardened onto a patty that was plastic, dry, gritty and gray. Look, I'll be back here again. I just didn't love it the way I wanted to and thought I would. So far, Marvin's delivers great and friendly service and a fine place to enjoy the tradition and atmosphere of a distinguished college. But the GCB wasn't nearly worth the hype. Oh yes, and the beer selection does to beer what Dan Quayle (DePauw '69) did to spelling. read more

I pride myself on giving completely unbiased reviews. This isn't going to be one of them. I went to school at DePauw and therefore signed a contract that I'd always love Marvin's in exchange for a tuition discount. Just kidding, there are no tuition discounts. Some people like the wet burrito, some rave about the pizza, but most just go for the GCB. For the uninitiated, that's a Garlic Cheeseburger, and it's amazing. My suggestion would be to pair your GCB with an order of Cheese Fries (ask for cheese on the side to maintain fry crunchiness), and a very cheap light beer. You shouldn't come for the decor, although the "Marvin's Delivers to..." pictures are awesome, definitely don't come for the service, and if you're a Wally, do everyone a favor and don't come at all. read more

Marv's makes food that sits in your belly like a rock, but you can't help but sort of love it because, well--that's all we really had while at good ol' DePauw in the middle of that Indiana cornfield called Greencastle. It's been renovated and cleaned-up since I graduated, so I can't speak of how anything currently tastes... I imagine the loss of 50-year-old grease alters the flavor of the beloved GCB (Garlic Cheeseburger)... But back in the day, the GCBs were a nice distraction from finals cramming (the school would kindly pick up the tab for all of us dorm-kids studying the night away), the ranch fries were good and even the poppers would do in a pinch. Perhaps the best thing about Marv's is its history and your part in it--the walls of the restaurant are decked out in snapshots of decades of students in various states of inebriation, collected from the "Kiwi" man or woman responsible for capturing the memories of formals and events ('cause Lord knows half the attendants probably don't remember jack about 'em). The only thing I could suggest to the new owners (Since Marvin) is to open before 5P on just a few select days per year. Reunion Weekends and Home football games would be a good start. This place is by no means an "elite establisment" it reminds me of a dirty cafeteria at a Chicaco Public school, very bland. BUT This place hits the spot on those late study nights I always had the GCB and the Mac bites. Take it for what it is. A "Oooo I am hungry and the only thing open in this town at 2 am is Marvin's" The locals and students will rant and rave about it, but you will see what I mean. Atmosphere? D Food? C Tradition? Marvin's isn't fancy and their burgers aren't Kobe beef... but man, I do love the taste of a GCB. My husband and I live 30 min away, but because they are open late at night, we are able to drive over late on the weekends and chow down! If you're expecting something gourmet, then it's best for you to go elsewhere. It's a classic college eatery, complete with photos all over the wall and a somewhat lackluster interior. But they're open late, and they serve the perfect food for late night eating, especially post drinking. Their prices are reasonable and while their staff isn't the friendliest bunch, they certainly aren't rude and they do smile from time to time. ;) I've eaten there many many times and I will continue to do so. read more

"Give me GCB's or give me good breath." Isn't that how the saying goes? People have been telling me about Marvin's GCB's (garlic cheeseburgers) for years so I finally stopped in to try one. Be careful. When you order a garlic cheeseburger, they actually give you two garlic cheeseburgers - a great deal at $7.00! I also ordered Frank's fries (cheese fries with garlic - $2.25). The GCB's were great! They weren't quite worth the hype, but they were still really good. The GCB's are a big enough portion that you don't need a side item. I don't recommend Frank's fries. The fries alone would have been good, but the cheese sauce was low quality and kind of gross. Garlic makes everything taste better, doesn't it? I miss Marv's. I went to DePauw, and spent two more years visiting my now-husband on campus, and there were a lot of GCBs and ranch fries. And wet burritos and pizza and GCCB's... Marvin's is a legend for a reason. It's a basic, funky, college-student-hangout greasy pit. But the GCB inspires a rather crazy level of fanaticism -- even my grandma, who eats like a bird, finished her entire half a GCB. (A whole one is two 1/4-lb patties.) The rest of the food is also good, and the restaurant is an experience (although not as unique as the old one). If you're ever unlucky enough to be in Greencastle, you must go get some Marv's. They deliver. Everywhere. Edit: My mom made her man-friend stop in Greencastle overnight on a drive back from STL. Just so they could eat at Marv's. The Thursday night special -- GCB, cheese fries and a coke -- is a classic, and that's what they had. Mmmmmmarv's. read more

Found this place on Yelp close to home and thought we would give it a try. They didn't disappoint. I got the 1/2 pound GCB (garlic cheeseburger) deluxe and the Franks garlic cheese fries. My wife got a 1/4 GCB and breaded mushrooms. The burgers were good even tho the they didn't have any condiments on them. The Franks fries were good too. Pro tip, eat them fast, they will get soggy. The breaded mushrooms were just ok. All in all great new place to eat and for sure added to our rotation. Both burgers, fries, mushrooms, and drinks all for less that $20. Can't beat it. horrible. called two hours ago for ONE pizza to be delivered and we live 6 minutes away. Called them four times and three times they said "yes we are on the way..." clearly not.
