The pickled plum, spicy tuna mayo, and takana were all 90% rice. The premium takana onigiri already had the rice wrapped so it was room temperature with soggy seaweed and barely any of the pickled mustard greens. The pickled plum had two tiny plums with cool rice; there was perhaps only two bites that contained pickled plum. The tuna mayo seemed to have more scallions than tuna. In all options, there was an overwhelming amount of rice. While this review reflects a very small part of the menu, it was enough that I probably wouldn't get food here again given all the other options in the area. read more

After several days of just coffee, we all decided we needed a matcha break, so I decided on Maruichi. The interior was so cute and cozy. They even have a nook if you want more privacy. It reminded me of a tatami room (you'd have to take off your shoes if you would like to step in). I didn't expect them to have such a wide selection of Japanese items, prepared food, or even the extensive dine-in menu either. Very impressive. The staff were also so warm and friendly, showing up with great attitude. The premium onigiris look too good to pass on, and it did not disappoint. Highly recommend the chashu and aji tama one. I would skip on the refrigerated onigiris though. I also got the iced matcha latte with whole milk, and it was pretty good. Although, it did taste a bit grainy. LOVE maruichi! I have been a big fan of the matcha for quite some time now, its the perfect balance of creamy and sweet while still keeping the fresh matcha taste. The shops aesthetic transports you to a japanese market with a little teahouse in the middle, a shopping area with Japanese snacks, and a counter ordering for other select dishes. I keep coming back for the $2-3 onigiri (the shrimp tempura being my favorite) whenever I want a quick bite on the go. For sit down I love the 3 handrolls for $10, my go to combo is the salmon, tuna, and shrimp tempura (with the tuna probably being my favorite). I actually went in here twice today haha because I peeped that they had matcha milk jam in stock, which I have been searching for a store that had it in the area but was unsuccessful for over a year. So I was a happy camper today when I was able to locate it in store! I can't wait to try it with strawberries and on toast. Their onigiris are tasty & HUGE; if you need spicy mayo, they have plenty of condiments available with plastic sauce cups. I have tried their chirashis bowls before in the past and highly recommend. A super cute cafe! It gets very crowded on the weekends but the line moves fairly quickly. There's a whole wall of Harney & Sons tea tins that you can buy. The onigiri meal set is super reasonable--it's one or two onigiri ($8.99 or $12.99 respectively) with miso soup and hot green tea. I got the chashu with egg and takana, which are pickled greens. Both are pretty big. The tea is super high quality and wasn't bitter like most green tea. I also got the guava matcha drink which was good. The space is really cute. There's a little seating area where you can sit on the floor after you remove your shoes. I love this place more and more with each visit. In the past year or so this cafe/restaurant has expanded its menu and collaborations. In terms of their regular menu, I absolutely love their hand rolls (both the regular and premium versions). Their wasabi is also so fresh that it is both delicious and painful. For the drink menu - I love their matcha and hojicha lattes. Also in the summer/warmer months they have DELICIOUS shaved ice!!! This week, Maruichi Select had a collaboration with Yamamotoyama (feat Eitaro and Ninben) that was absolutely wonderful !!!!!!! The pop event featured new matcha flavors, freshly prepared samples of red bean dorayaki, and Ninben Dashi Ochazuke. I ordered the guava matcha soda which was very yummy and refreshing. It paired well with the ochazuke. The tea-infused savory dish was well balanced with salmon, ikura, and roasted seaweed. A perfect meal for a chilly fall day! I've been here at least 5 times now, and it's one of my favorite places to do work! they don't have wifi unfortunately though I love love love their cafe options!!! In the summer, their kakegori is a nice sweet treat too. Their matcha and tea selections are some of the best in the area though I wish their special lattes were a bit better. I'm a big fan of their curry as well as their hand rolls. Before Maruichi took over the space, Gen So En was one of my favorite study spots because of the seating arrangement and lighting. I'm glad Maruichi took over the space as their selection for food and drinks are really great as well as their speciality snacks. I always feel welcomed by the staff at the counters as well as they try their best to remember your name if you're a frequent visitor. Why would the serve me this inconvenient bowel if they knew they were packed?... Ramen was bland and half was still stuck together. I had to put my dishes back too and spilt some of my leftover coffee. No one came to assist me or even clean up the spill. Only person who help was another customer. All this for something like $30-40. I could've gone down the street and gotten something 10 times better for half the price. Don't go here. read more
