Beef tartare

We came here for a double date and it was such a cute cozy vibe. The setup of the bar and the upstairs dining room was beautiful. Service was great and really helpful - Jonathan helped course out a menu for us and pick a couple of great wines to pair. Steak frites and chicken frites were my fave dishes; beef tartare had a lot of hype but was just good not amazing. Overall was a great experience and I would definitely come back.

Martine's Wine Bar, located along Palmerston Ave and College St., is a farm to table restaurant from the owners of Bar Raval (which is right next door) and Bar Isabel (further down the street along College near Ossington). Martine's Wine Bar has a rotating menu where they offer a variety of shareable plates (if you desire!). The space is intimate and warm, where it is perfect for a solo date, romantic date, or a night out with friends. They have chefs bar seating, a patio, as well as a dining room upstairs. The kitchen is open concept, so if you do sit at the chefs bar you can see all the chefs/cooks in action while they prepare your food. Martine's Wine Bar also accepts reservations but also does walks in as well. I stopped by Martine's Wine Bar for a solo date on a Monday night. I made reservations in advance for right when they opened at 6pm. There were a few tables already and the hostess sat me at the chefs bar. The vibes here are casual, charming, and unpretentious. Service was great and friendly as well. I asked for some recommendations from my server and felt comfortable dining alone. Having a seat at the chefs bar was also great. I spent most of my time just watching the kitchen prepare multiple dishes. Food wise, I ordered the following items: - Glass of sauvignon blanc from California - Spicy beef tartare (with dill, mushroom, and sourdough) - Oyster mushrooms, razor clams, and wild leeks - Dessert - fermented coffee ice cream, sponge cake, and meringue All the dishes were tasty! The beef tartare was unique with the spicy sauce (not too spicy though, just the perfect amount of spice and heat). The sourdough it came with was heavenly and toasted to perfection. The oyster mushrooms, razor clams, and wild leeks dish was simple but unique and the sauce it was pan fried in had hints of butter, garlic and an acidic finish to round out the dish. The dish wasn't super heavy but felt clean where the ingredients shined on their own. Lastly, the dessert was a great sweet treat to end the meal. The fermented coffee ice cream was unique and had a slightly thicker texture than regular ice creams. There was also a hint of saltiness from the extra salt added on top which added a sweet and salty element to the dessert. Overall, Martine's Wine Bar is a great addition to the food scene in Toronto. Definitely worth visiting (I definitely will be back!). Great food, friendly service, and unpretentious vibes. There is something for everyone on the menu and if you come with a bigger party you can definitely try more dishes. Also love that the menu rotates to reflect what is in season as well!

And while it has a down-to-earth feel, they play up the hospitality factor. While appreciated, I do have a small recommendation: leave the bottled water at the table. Given it's a busy restaurant with various plates to clear, our swamped waitress didn't always get a chance to refill water leaving our glasses empty at times. With the restaurant's dedication to supporting local suppliers, the dishes exude freshness and their menu changes daily. You won't find a heavy thick dressing in their Caesar salad ($16). Instead, the vinaigrette-like concoction barely covered the greens and was heavy on the lemon and light on the garlic and anchovy. I would have liked the big pieces of lettuce cut up, but I guess it allows the diner to behold Van Stone Farm's greens in all their glory. While they recommended having this with the first round of dishes, you may want it served along side the heavier mains as it's a great palette cleanser. Despite looking odd, the raw mushroom slices covering the spicy beef tartare ($24) were tasty and helped soak up the flavourful sauces. Martine's didn't skimp on the peppery horseradish sauce that added a powerful punch of spiciness to the meat... even though they provide a generous portion, apply with caution. Even their sourdough had a different quality to it: pillowy soft yet still smoky from being thoroughly toasted. Pile everything onto the bread for a delicious bite. Large uncut lasagna-like noodles arrived in the fazzoletti ($26). Smothered in a lemony herb olive oil, the sauce's pop of freshness worked nicely to balance out the creamy smoked burrata. The pasta was minimally adorned with zucchini ribbons so the cheese stands centre in the dish. The skate wing ($24) was so hot and crispy that it could easily rival a schnitzel. And while most restaurants likely would have paired it with a tartar sauce, Martine's uses an Americana red sauce studded with pork belly and thinly sliced runner beans. It's good, but the sauce is just too salty. Perhaps the kitchen can turn the dish into a full blown parmigiana by adding spaghetti to really lean into the savoury tomato sauce. Chicken isn't always exciting, but the wood fired chicken and fries ($30 for half portion) was tasty, especially the dark meat pieces that were juicy and tender. The chicken breast was drier, but still decent. You could slather on some of the chive mayonnaise to give it an extra boost of moisture. Order the "spicy" version of the chicken, which has no heat and instead was rubbed in a sweet paprika mixture. It provided the extra boost of flavour in an otherwise tame dish. The dish arrives with plenty of hot fries that have a great potato flavour but were oversalted. A lone dessert was offered that evening - Van Stone Farms strawberries ($9) with anise hyssop ice cream. Once you get through the fresh fruit, the melted ice cream and the sweet syrup the berries were macerated almost has a cereal-milk quality to it, with a licorice tang.

Guys. This place deserves higher reviews! It's right behind the busy and popular Bar Raval, and not by coincidence is also run by the same group. The style is chic yet casual, the kind that's perfect for a weekday dinner but also fancy enough food to impress a date. Dishes here are a bit on the pricier end, but so worth it! We tried a variety of appetizers, pasta, and entree dishes. All were excellent! I loved how different the dishes were and even the plates they were served on were so gorgeous. Our server was also very professional, engaging but not pushy, and the food came out so fast. A bonus is that the drinks here will always be great since it's affiliated with the bar ;) Highly recommend. 5 stars all around

Came here for dinner with a friend on a Tuesday night and we were seated right away with our 6pm reso. Love the cute vibes of this place tucked away in Palmerston. For starters we got the beef tartare - 3/5, bread was a bit too thick and charred for my liking. Fried fish was phenomenal 5/5, goes really well with the sauce. Pasta came out cold and hard so that was a 1/5 for us. Dessert was 3/5, ice cream with chopped strawberries, while it tasted good but it wasn't anything special.

Food usually eats first in this case I couldn't wait and for $44 this steak is the best meal for the price wow great experience.

This bottle shop has a unique variety of natural, organic, and biodynamic wines that may rotate depending on the season. The space also has a wine bar where you can try different wines by the glass or treat yourself in a wine flight or a whole bottle. The by the glass menu changes weekly where you get to have a chance to try new and exciting wines from different regions. I've been to Grape Witches several times but I was able to sit down at their wine bar this time and enjoy a wine flight (three 1oz pours featuring wines from Germany) and a glass of wine. Having the wine flight, I was able to find a new rose that I really enjoyed that I ended up getting a glass of it afterwards. Staff are extremely friendly, personable, and knowledgeable about wine where they can give you suggestions based on your preferences without being pretentious. You are also able to taste any wines you're interested in on the menu to see if you like them as well. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Grape Witches enjoying the delicious selections where I even found new favourites. Overall, a great new wine shop and bar at Waterworks Food Hall. If you love all things wine this is the place to go. They have unique bottles you can purchase and friendly staff to help you with selecting your wines. Will definitely be back to try other glasses of wine in the future!

We arrived around 3:30 pm when it was fairly occupied; they feature 'Happy Sour Hour' from 4 to 7 pm, during which all of their sour beers are reduced in price to $7.00. We ordered and shared two beers, the first a lager, the second a sour beer in order to take advantage of the discounted price. The venue is long and narrow, with two floors and a distinctive looking back patio. Our service was fairly prompt and they are located in a quite convenient location, literally across the street from the subway and the historic, flagship LCBO location. So I can recommend a visit if you're in the area and desire a drink and/or snack.

This must be the place!…read more Our first trip to Toronto and boy did we have fun. From delicious food to sipping wine, and everything in between, Toronto was a city to explore. Ladybug Wine Bar is a cute but also sophisticated wine bar located on King Street, steps away from shopping and restaurants. We stopped in here on a snowy Sunday before our flight home. They also serve Sunday Brunch. We grabbed a few open seats at the comfy bar. They do not offer wine flights, which made this experience pretty darn expensive but SOOOO worth it. We had such a fun time and the people working were so nice, we honeslty did not want to leave. They were willing to help with our selections. We actually ordered all their Reds by the glass. I know, but there were only about 6 and we had to try them all. I like to say "go big or go home" LOL! We loved almost all except for maybe a few. We ended up also ordering a charcuterie while we sip. And of course I brought a bottle home with me. If you are ever in Toronto, please check out Ladybug wine bar, it is fantastic, you won't want to leave. Cheers!

A Hidden Gem for Brunch!!…read more I came here with 3 of my girlies that love brunch. Everything we ordered was fresh, light, and absolutely delicious. We started with some drinks which were super affordable compared to other brunch places. The espresso martinis weren't too sweet and had the perfect balance. As for the dishes the standout for me was the smoked salmon toast. The combination of the eggs, fresh dill, and sliced salmon on top of toast was so yummy. Service was nice and the place was cozy/bright. Highly recommend this spot for a girls' brunch or casual date.

This is a wine bar - the house lager was bad (maybe my own bad decision) and the red I got was fine ... nothing to write home about. However place fell apart with the food - the shrimp came with 5 medium sized shrimp with the tails, legs and shells on and were under seasoned. The artichokes were mediocre (loved the sauce they came with). Worst of all was the "Ontario peaches" with the burrata were totally canned peaches - could've even been dole brand! This place has amazing potential with the location and vibe - but the food just was not it. Small portions and the price didn't match what was served. The service was friendly but nothing too crazy. Go here for the drinks, but maybe not for the dinner!

Our server was great at helping us pick our wine, he mentioned that their wines are all on the dry side which is perfect for me, I'm not one for sweet wines. We also had two of their small plates the mussels and the burrata. The mussels tasted great with the sauce, a little garlicky which I prefer. The combination of the peach and mint went really well with the burrata. Light and easy to eat. The patio at night is one of the highlights. The only small complaint was it did take a while to get our wine after we ordered it and a little while to get our check. Otherwise cute spot.

I think it's also a cafe during the day. They had a live DJ playing some Berlin type music not too loud which was a nice touch. They have some non-alcoholic beers too which is nice. Inside has that cool vintage hipster Berlin feel to it. No cover, no lineups, just a nice local neighbourhood bar near the bridge and a bunch of other autoshops. Was walking back from an art gallery and we just literally stumbled upon it and sat down for a catch up drink. I feel like Toronto needs more places like this. Quiet neighborhood bars with a nice selection of music, quality cocktails, not too expensive, no lines ups. Nice slightly mature place for people to catch up and have a drink without having to venture heavily into the Dundas West bar scene where it's way more hectic. Probably fits like 20 people so it's nice and intimate. Kind of reminds me of some of the bottle shops in Montreal where you can either drink it there and vibe or take it to the park right next to it. Place has some character to it. Would like to see it have a good solid run in Toronto's independent bar scene and be supported by the neighborhood. Next time I'm back I'll try out the cocktail menu and see if that's fire too. Can selection was interesting. I got a fruit punch vodka seltzer with 2 grams of sugar which was good. LBGTQ+ friendly but open to anybody really.
