This massive mall with nearly 2M square feet of space for up to 200 retailers is always an interesting experience. The repertoire of shops here, of course, has changed over the years. Gone are shops like Sears, Borders and Circuit City. Now there's more contemporary replacements like Kohls, Hobby Lobby and Primark. While many traditional indoor malls are dying a slow, painful death, Gurnee Mills seems to be thriving at least to some extent. The food court is still quite active and the storefronts still seem largely occupied. I particularly enjoy places like 2nd & Charles, the aforementioned Primark and Five Below. The food options like Starbucks, Cinnabon and Charley's Steaks are quite good for a drink, a snack or a light meal. There are also places for the kids to play. All of this housed in a pleasant facility continues to make Gurnee Mills an enjoyable place to visit.

Anyway, we knew what we wanted and decided to order a mattress from Costco as opposed to a regular mattress shop as we have always done previously. It was "just" for a guest room queen size mattress and we thought we would see what the experience might be like and we bought a decent looking hybrid firm queen mattress for $800 (listed prices include delivery). Scheduling was seamless and prompt and the deliverers arrived right within their 2 hour window 4 working days after the order. The mattress was nice and clean and new unlike poor experience from some low rated reviewers. The customer service issues we had was with the deliverers who turned out to be 2 younger guys that worked for Costco's sub-contractor Ryder Last Mile. They were friendly and polite, but the first thing was they didn't take their shoes off or use foot coverings. I didn't like that but also didn't say anything not knowing Costco practices. The other thing was when I said don't forget to take the old mattress, they said "you need to call Costco and they will send another truck for it". I was surprised as the Costco.com site specifically said mattress removal was included, but again being Costco, I gave them the benefit of my doubt. I asked them to at least take the mattress downstairs and leave it by the curb, and they complied. After they hurried off, my first thought was I'm glad I didn't tip them as I was going to do if they were nice and competent, but they didn't deserve anything anyway lol. I immediately called Costco.com to schedule the pickup and also complain about the lack of old mattress removal, and the empathetic rep on the phone agreed they should have done so, and he immediately called the management of the cited sub-contractor, who then immediately had the same crew come back and pick up the mattress which they did within an hour. The Costco leverage and quality control really shined then as we have come to expect. In a second later phone call, I called back to complain and pass on customer feedback about their sub not respecting property with their lack of shoe coverings, and again another empathetic Costco.com rep agreed. He also then nicely offered a $50 credit to our account for the bit of trouble and I thought that was a nice touch and again befitting of Costco quality control. Anyway, overall, and despite the mixed experience, we're quite pleased with the Costco.com purchase here.

A sales rep was on me, she reached into the bookcase of bloomers and snapped open a pair like it was nothing. LONG! They were exactly what I had traveled here for! Too many people, lots of signs, so much clothing... I don't belong here. But the girl inside of me reminded me that, if I got it all now, I could avoid coming back till summer. This plus 'sale' sent me rushing through the store, grabbing my size in three different colors of one, five of another and heading to the line. The line was really well managed- moved quickly, but allowed me time to pull up my last email blast from Express. It landed me an additional $25 off every $75 I was spending. I had brought $500 worth of clothes up, and Joshua, who rang me up, graciously applied my email coupon, found my next account, had me laughing and smiling throughout. I complimented him on the store and staff, recalling how intense and insane keeping up with weekend retail could be. I never really looked into it before but I thought Five Below was maybe a lower end clothing store lol. Anyway, it's basically an a-ok dollar store with items priced nominally up to $5. It's a fine store for such and they have a wide variety of items. They may not have the quality of a Hello Tokyo or a Daiso but you get more for your discount dollars here it appears. The kiddos had plenty of fun items to pick from to stay under their $5 budget and they enjoyed their shopping here. My only critique is that many items showed a scan code but no specific price except a sign saying less than $5. I had to ask the friendly and helpful attendant several times what an item's price was and most items we picked were $3.50 or $4 but it would be helpful to show an exact price if possible. I would recommend any discount shoppers check out this a-ok franchise to see if there's a consumer fit for themselves.
