Entering Marshall's store is like stepping back into the 1940s or 50s. It's a family shop where the staff, if they don't greet you on entry, they will track you down and help you find exactly what you need or something else that will serve the purpose, usually for less than $1. After a couple of visits they'll greet you by name, and ask you how your last project came out. When I first moved into the area 2 years ago, I needed a pipe wrench. I mentioned that I already had a couple of wrenches in a box somewhere, so they offered to lend me their wench. I just signed it out like a library book. They do that with a few choice tools. This hardware store is not just handy, it is the hub of the neighborhood. I had to learn to think ahead because they close at 4:30, and they are closed on Sundays, just like all stores did in the old days. read more

i was in Duluth for the holidays with some family and we looked everywhere for a fondue pot. Target ... out. Kohl's ... nope. Shopko ... nada. We were sharing our tale with the owner of the Hallmark store and she suggested we try Marshall's. Last stop on Christmas eve and YES they had an electric fondue pot!!! so my boyfriend got one for Christmas from his mom and i get to use it too. Bonus! the guys working there all appear to be family and they were very nice, and gave me a tootsie roll even though I'm way over 5. I was amazed at all the items they had, little bit of everything. This place is the best hardware store possible. If there were more hardware stores like this Menards would not exist. They have everything and the staff that can help you find what you need and give you tips on how to deal with practically anything. I love that they know so much about my older home. They won't sell you something you don't need either. Great return policy as well. Marshall Hardware is in many ways the last of its breed in Duluth. Sure, there are other small hardware stores in town, but none quite match the shopping experience at Marshall. The folks are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and honest. They generally have that odd ball part no one else has, but unlike the Big Box stores, will take the time to make sure it is exactly right for your application and share helpful advice on installation, if needed. Marshall anchors the Lakeside business district and it's kind of fun to watch all the people that come in and out of that store. Many of the small hardware stores appeal just to the old timers, but Marshall caters to a wide demographic. They know how to treat people right, have considerable selection (especially given the size of the store), and are reasonable on their prices. I am happy to give them my business. read more
