Went early morning to get my annual as this is located in Costco. Previously I found it a bit too chaotic but early morning is perhaps the way to go. I always just say I'll see whoever is available next, because honestly every eye doctor I've been with under Marsha Howard is really nice, helpful, and knows what they're talking about. The front personnel have been great too. Some interactions have been just pleasant and professional, but I also was able to have a friendly conversation with another about a video game. So whatever you prefer, it's just nice there. They gave me a kind of long wait time, because I was a bit late to my appointment, but actually they still saw me within minutes. She answered all my questions about possible future issues with my 65-year-old eyes. Office staff was great too - efficient and friendly. (It's super convenient to have the office in the Costco too. You walk out the door and right there is the eyeglass area. The Costco folks are really helpful too. Located inside of the Signal Costco, the optometry department consists of two parts: the optometrist office with its own set of employees and the vision center where they sell eye glasses and contacts (which is staffed by Costco employees). In most cases, they operate independently. They will send a reminder via text and email when its time for your annual check. Often times, they are not able to answer the phone, but an automated system will automatically record your number via caller id and initiate a text conversation. You can then schedule your appointment through that channel. Costco does accept most vision insurance plans (including VSP and Superior), which was the original reason why we went to this office. But we've come to really like Dr. Howard's 'bedside' manner, and the prices for glasses and contacts at the Costco vision center can't be beat. I'm guessing that you don't have to be a Costco member to get an eye exam (and can use all forms of digital payment), but definitely need to be a member to buy frames and contacts (and thus can only use Visa as digital payment). And their selection of frames is good, even for someone like me who has a pretty wide lens width. A standard eye exam is $79, without any of the add-ons, and will get you a prescription for both glasses and contacts. The initial battery of tests (including the dreaded 'puff-of-air' to test for glaucoma) is done by a tech using pretty modern equipment. The final step is a 1:1 with Dr. Howard where she will take the time to make sure everything is ok. The appointment for the both of us was right on-time. read more

Even though her office is quite small in terms of square footage, they are always able to run the eye tests that I need. Dr. Howard took special care of me when she learned that there's a history of macular degeneration in my family. She always takes the time to answer my questions about my concerns regarding macular degeneration, she helped me try out several kinds of contact lenses when I wanted to start wearing them, and she never fails to check in on the rest of my life, asking about my work, my family. Dr. Nguyen is wonderful, professional and such a down-to-earth guy! My original doctor was on vacation and wouldn't be returning for another week or so, I elected to be seen by Dr. Nguyen. I literally lost my glasses a week prior to my eye appointment, and I had them for at least 4 years. Dr. Nguyen was patient and didn't make me feel rushed while going over the eye exam to figure out my new prescription (which is close to my old prescription). I've been going to Howard Optometry for more than 10 years. I started with Dr. Howard and now see Dr. Wong - both are excellent and so patient with me and my "let me see #2 again...ok #1 again." They take time to explain the images of your eyes and what is going on with your eye health. They make recommendations for products based on what you need, not what they sell. It is easy to get an appointment. The office staff seems to care and do not keep you waiting long to start the eye tests. And, pricing is low enough that when I only had access to a poor vision plan it didn't make sense to purchase the insurance because the premiums were more than the eye exam! The office is located inside the Signal Hill Costco (you don't need to be a member to go to their office). Costco Optical has very reasonable frames and glasses (for purchase of glasses you need to be a member). read more
