Sometimes I feel sorry for independent neighbourhood stores like Marlborough's Stationery. I was looking for a small notebook and I was shocked to see that one of them cost $15 and going on sale for $9?!! 60% off but still pricey when compare to other places! The stocks and the selections here are quite limited too. But I guess it is good if you live in the neighbourhood and just ran out of things and you can get it from here. When I first moved here, I thought maybe this place was a cigar store or something. But they actually sell stationary and kids paper goods and art supplies (weird name right?) It is a great place to take your kids to stock up on supplies; crayons, binders, pens, folder, construction paper, it's all here. But do expect to pay more than you would at one of the dollar stores nearby. (I'm sure there's a quality vs. quantity argument to be had here). I usually frequent this place when I'm in a panicky rush. Like when I suddenly run out of paper and must print something right away. It's also a convenient place if you need to do some quick (pretty cheap) photocopying. I've also used this place for sending long-distance faxes because they don't charge as much as Cards N Such (a store that's actually closer to my place) for long-distance faxes. read more

Marlborough's--nice store, but I wouldn't want to shop there. I remember when this was a cluttered stationary & school supply store; about ten years ago, they remodeled it. It looks pretty good now, but I can get some of the same stuff at the Shopper's Drug Mart, of all places, for considerably less. I was in here recently looking for a little account book, but I balked at the price (it was almost $14) and later got the same thing for nearly half that at the Staples by St. Clair and Keele. It's times like that which don't make me feel guilty about taking my business to one of the big box stores outside the neighbourhood. But I should feel guilty, because I shouldn't have to go to Staples to get simple stuff like that... read more

I was looking for something very specific and this was the only store in Toronto that had it. It's great to know that small gems like this place can provide even the most scarce things that is usually hard to find at your typical stationery store. Also, because it is a family-owned store, the customer service I received here was beyond impeccable. Instead of a standardized customer service that one usually gets at a place like Staples, Grand and Toy etc., I was welcomed with warmth as soon as I entered and left the place a very happy customer. I definitely recommend this to any one looking for specialized stationaries, as well as your unusual types of toys, games and various miscellaneous things. read more

I walked into this store for the first time two days ago. I was looking for a gift for my nephew. I walked in to what I thought was an employee and a costumer talking about the prices on something, but it turned out to be two employees. They were talking very loud across the shop and disagreeing with each other. They weren't yelling, but it was not a good vibe to walk in to at all. Neither of them welcomed me to the store or offered me any assistance in finding what I was looking for. Finally one of them went down stairs so the arguing stopped, but even then the man behind the counter didn't look up from his pricing or wish me a nice day or anything as I left. There was a lot of options and it looked like a very nice shop. Supporting local businesses is very important to me, and I usually choose them over chain stores. However, I won't be returning to this shop because the atmosphere was incredibly negative, and unwelcoming. read more

Marlborough's has been in the Bloor West Village for decades. I went in looking for a hard to find item, but aving looked in several other stores I wasn't terribly hopeful. I live in the neighbourhood, and shop here all the time. I realize that it costs a bit more than Staples, but lets be realistic, we are not talking about big ticket items, we are talking about occasional small items and pen refills. I would rather pay a bit more for the convenience of being able to walk to the end of the street, and I am happy to pay a neighbour a living wage. When I first moved to the village it was a much better place, lots of unique stores. Now, it is turning into the Kingsway...all banks, Shoppers Starbucks etc. This same mentality finished off our little hardware store, and our lighting store, and lots of other nice little places that were nice and convenient. Now if I need a couple of small items or an unusual light bulb I have to go to Home Depot and enjoy their selection of 1...and the crappy attitude of a clerk who could care less along with it. Screw Shoppers and the big box stores. People who prefer to shop in those places will soon find themselves with no choice....enjoy your drive to Walmart, and say good by to your local jobs. read more

They always seem to have what I need and the staff are really friendly and helpful. They even saved me when I needed a couple of last-minute Christmas gifts and wrapping. So much about greatness of big box stores... After spending half an hour calling and waiting on the line and getting repeatedly disconnected, I dialled Marlborough's with my inquiry. Not only did the staffer know what I wanted, she also said she can order me one. So after all that nonsense with the big ones, I got exactly what I wanted - and at a better price than at Staples. Ha! Sure there are items in this nice store that you can pick elsewhere but they also have things that may be harder to come by. One of the best purchases ever was an ink pen for my son - the selection was great, the refills readily available. I have also picked up many nice presents for children. The best part? No need to drive to the Stockyards or further, just walk down the street and shop in the Village - that's convenience our neighbourhood is known for. I am not a fan of chains, I always prefer private companies and try to give them my business whenever I can. The big ones are not automatically cheaper either, and some of my worst purchases have been in them. The big chains also take their profits elsewhere, and put a squeeze on the smaller businesses. At this particular time, both Staples and Canadian Tire got F for customer service over the phone. Marlborough's scored A+. read more

I was looking for a particular brand of office products - Galison - that I could only find on American web sites, with high shipping costs to Canada. For Canadian stores, the manufacturer led me to Marlborough's, the closest store for me. They had some of what I was looking for, and said they could order what they didn't have in stock. The CDN price was reasonable compared to the American MSRP (there are probably duties and what not). Some of the stuff is more expensive, some is less, like any store. They do have unique products that you won't find elsewhere. I ended up also picking up some Easter stickers and cards, as they were pretty and reasonably priced - check the tables outside for the best deals. A couple of the younger girls at cash could have been a little more customer service oriented. (Is it just me getting older, or is this latest batch of teenagers/twenty-somethings all about them?) read more

Great Products, great service, kids will love it! Joanne and the staff really know how to take care of you and there are a lot of really great products. I think when people say that it is pricey they are not comparing apples to apples, they dont sell cheap break in one day products which you find everywhere else. I'd rather shop here than drive to Business Depot (or fill-in any other big-box chain store name). They seem to have most of what you need.

Staff is not helpful. I walked in and the girl was talking on the phone for a while without even acknowledging the fact that there where customers /guests in the store. Bad custoner service. read more
