It's a well-known fact that I'm physically incapable of walking past a stationery shop without making a purchase. So, when I found myself early for a doctor's appointment, I "accidentally" took a detour that led me right here. For those planning a more deliberate trip, it's less than half a block north of College Ave, right off the Grace St stop on the 506 streetcar. The shop has a huge selection of fountain pens and fountain pen paraphernalia and a solid range of washi tape, pens and quality notepads, including Rhodia and some nice Japanese brands. My quest for Uni Jetstream pen refills and some Traveler's Notebook swag came up empty, which I'll chalk up to it being January, prime "sold-out-of-everything" season for anything planning related. Despite that, I didn't leave empty-handed. I picked up a Life Noble Note Section A5 grid notebook, (a new brand for me) and a beautiful Zebra Sarasa Clip 3-color pen. The prices were quite reasonable, even beating some I've seen on Amazon. I also scored some 2026 Midori monthly diary stickers from the closeout cart near the register, which felt like a real victory. I'll definitely be back in a few months to check for restocks. I have been a customer of Wonder Pens since 2015. A friend of mine, who was passionate about fountain pens, introduced me to this store. I have been a fan of fountain pens since I got my first one in grade 7. It kind of makes sense, as I was into calligraphy back then and it was a simple nib change on my Sheaffer pen to use it as a fountain pen from a calligraphy one. As much as I love fountain pens, I don't have a ton. Most of my recent pens have been from Wonder Pens. - Lamy purple fountain pen - TWSBI mini transparent fountain pen I love them. They are fun to write with. It's elevated, fine writing. It does require some care to make sure that your nibs are clean and your ink flows optimally. If you don't write that often, your ink will eventually dry up, and some extra cleaning and care will be needed. The funny thing is that last month, I was in Little Italy. I parked steps away from Wonder Pens. I completely forgot that it was nearby. It wasn't open just before 10 am on a Saturday. However, after attending an event and having lunch in the neighbourhood, I got to visit this store. It's heaven if you love stationery, fine pens, ink, stickers, and more. It felt right browsing on a casual Saturday afternoon. There were discounts on ink. I got myself a couple of bottles. I was pleased. There was a fountain pen sale going on. Some can be expensive, such as Sailor fountain pens that are over $300. As pretty as they are, I have never had the urge to own them. I like pretty, functional pens. They don't have to be pricy. They simply need to work and make me happy. I do love Lamy. I saw a transparent one (also known as a demonstrator) that felt right in my hand and was enjoyable to write with. Sadly, it was out of stock. However, the woman behind the counter said that she could text me when it was available. Cool! She took down my phone number. Sometimes, you wonder whether businesses will truly contact you when an item is in stock. I remember going to a Fossil store to get notification of a band. I never got a call. I do trust Wonder Pens. It's owned by a husband-wife duo and these folks love what they do, including offering calligraphy classes at their store and more. Its online site still has this Lamy demonstrator pen as being sold out. It is a pretty pen and extremely affordable. It's a cool store. From pins to pen cases, you can find cool gift ideas here. The tote bags were pretty cute, too. I also loved the various notebooks that were in stock. Staff are super helpful and nice. I waited a bit at the checkout. The woman came over after helping someone with fountain pens and apologized profusely. It was sweet. I am probably far too patient that the wait was not a big deal. I was looking fondly at a sticker of the store and a cute card by the checkout. It was almost as if this woman was reading my mind. With my purchase, I got both of them on the house. Yay! She asked if I was a customer earning points. It had been a while since I last shopped with Wonder Pens. She searched using my phone number and found me. Double yay! I paid with a credit card. Visiting Wonder Pens was one of our must-dos on our 72 hours trip to Toronto to attend a wedding. Why? Well, it's one of the few official Traveler's Factory partner shops. Excited to stamp our journals with their exclusive stamps and it just happened to be Stamp Caravan. There's some unique Traveler's products not generally found on their website. IYKYK. It's a nice, quaint stationary store selling a variety of journals, notebooks, papers, pens, accessories, washi papers, stickers, stamps, gifts and more. Wanted to spend hours just looking at each item but our group had a reservation for BarChef and we were short on time. There's parking nearby but we walked from Kensington Market. I was super excited go to Wonder Pens and although the way there was pretty interesting, the trip was worth it. Wonder Pens is located in a warehouse store with large doors which made me hesitant to enter because I felt like I was invading some secret store. Yet everything inside is super clean and neat. The workers there were also very knowledgeable about the products. Although I knew exactly what I wanted, I didn't need their help but I knew their assistance was accessible. I got the Leuchtturm1917 pen loop in black for only $5.55 before tax and I love it so much! The pen loops in black are sold out in Indigo so I was glad I got it here. I grew up using a fountain pen and for many years it was really hard to find more than a basic offer (and in the same time affordable) in North America till I've learned about WonderPens! It is a family run business with true dedication and passion to their products. This pen/stationery store is amazing. I came here with my brother to stock up on some supplies before I headed back to Montréal, and it does not disappoint. They're insanely well-stocked with pens, pads, notebooks, pencils, and fountain pen inks! We were attended to immediately, and the worker there asked me how he could help me today. We got talking about fountain pens, and we exchanged some stories about our personal collections. I was looking for a dry iron gall ink, and he suggested the Rohrer & Klingner Scabiosa ink. It's been a few months since I came to the store, and it's still one of my favorite inks (this is incredible, considering how often I swap inks in my pens). I also left with a Life notebook, which he recommended as a good A5 size alternative to my usual Midori notebooks. I never realized Wonder Pens existed in the Annex until my cousin took me here one Sunday afternoon! This location has all your calligraphy pens ranging from fountain, brush, ballpoint (I may need to brush up on my pen knowledge). They also have individual inkwells for sale in a variety of colours. The staff are super helpful and extremely knowledgeable in a no pressure sales environment. They truly do want to share their love for the craft with everyone. I really want to like this store, and it seems that other yelpers really love it here. I have shopped at Wonderpens for many years, and my negative experiences far outnumber the good. The overwhelmingly positive reviews on Yelp made me doubt my bad experiences, and I gave a second thought to writing this review. But I have had extremely good experiences at other boutique shops, and I hope that Liz or Jon reads this to take corrective action. In particular, there is one sales associate who works there who either despises me, or is simply a terrible salesperson. I am haunted by her terrible customer service. Each time I have been "helped" by her, my experience has been akin to playing a game of 20 questions where the answer is mostly no. My last experience, for example: Me: Do you have product X? SA: No Me: Do you have anything similar to product X? SA: Yes Me: Can I open it to see? SA: No Me: How about product X in a different size? SA: Well that's very dependent on personal preference. Me: Can I see it? SA: No Me: Well here's something I found in your store that looks similar. Can I take a closer look? SA: No Me: Are you getting more of product X? SA: I don't know when, so you'll have to come back frequently. At this point, I'm running out of questions to ask. It just seemed like she didn't want me in the store. Besides all the "no" replies to the 20 questions, I really shouldn't have had to ask the 20 questions at all. Good customer service should have back and forth, with the sales associate participating in solving the problem that I have. I may have entered the store with some sort of stationery dilemma in mind, and excellent service would have helped me come to a potential solution, even if it didn't result in a sale that day. I have gone to Wonderpens and left feeling bad about myself too many times, and am no longer interested in putting myself through this type of abuse. read more

This is the new location that Jon and Liz moved to earlier this summer. The entrance is a bit hidden and there is no sign showing 250. The walkway/alleyway right next to 260 Carlaw. (see the pictures I posted). The door/shop faces south. There is Green P street parking along Carlaw. The new location is very spacious and a lovely space that has a lot of room to walk around in compared to the old shop which was tiny. It looks like there is a table set up which could be where calligraphy lessons might be held in the back of the showroom. Wonderpens is a stationary Nerd's Paradise, even in a digital age I keep going back to paper and pens. There is a nice selection of fountain pens that are cheaper (price wise) to midrange ($50-100). Fountain pens of course can be much more expensive, but Wonderpens is a great cost efficient place to get your first fountain pen and see if you like it and want to dabble further or not. They carry the Chinese brand Jinhao which makes attractive metal body pens that start at $7 which is cheaper than you can get from eBay most of the time. I love this because I don't feel sad if I lose one of these. There's a nice selection of Noodles Flex pens. There's a nice selection of different brands of ink and their are ink chips to show how the ink actually looks on paper. There's a nice selection of paper (notebooks and letter paper) of different weights and sizes. They do carry Midori Travelers Notebooks, accessories and refills and the price is not jacked up because we are in Canada and the lowest locally that I have found. They also carry Field Notes including limited editions. Jon and Liz are friendly and answer questions that you may have about products they carry. If you read their blog and check out their instagram you will see Liz talks about product releases or her impressions using some of the products because she is a fellow stationary nerd too. I like that they carry a lot of products/brands no other Canadian stores/businesses don't because I don't have to order them online from the US. I read an old review that some people think Jon and Liz are not friendly or that they felt like they ignore their customers. I don't agree at all. They greet you when you enter and are always willing to answer any questions you may have. I like that they are easy going and give you space to shop. They don't pressure you to buy anything like other small shops (of various goods) sometimes might. I used to pop by the old location every now and then, sometimes with a large haul because I am a Stationary hoarder, other times with nothing at all and I have always been treated with consistent and friendly demeanour from Jon or Liz. I like supporting this local business because their prices are reasonable and they carry great products. It's also apparent that they have an actual love of stationary which shows. This is my favourite pen and stationary store and I love recommending it to friends like it was recommended to me by a coworker last year. read more

Maybe invest in some tiny boxes for putting the pens and ink in because I cannot imagine how tragic it would be if someone ordered an expensive pen or a large bottle of ink and it breaks inside the packaging. I've been gifting my husband fountain pens for several years now but had typically ordered them online from another shop out of province, as the only nearby brick and mortar store I was aware of (in Yorkville) wasn't my favourite shopping experience. This year I was seeking a particular pen in a somewhat limited release finish and the manufacturer's website led me to Wonder Pens. I'm in out of town or who had to go take a look at Wonder Pens. Very glad I did. This is a top notch pen store and way above the average. They have a huge variety of inks - all available with samples. You will find: Diamine Jay. Urban. Noodle or's. Platinum. Pilotte quake oh - more brands that I can list. For pens they have a great selection of entry-level choices ranging from the preppy up to the Metropolitan and Safari. Higher end pens are well represented as well and it was a joy to see them and hold them in my hands. I browsed Edison, pilotte, platinum, Lammie, Quickel, Visconti - again more than I can list. One thing that sets them apart, entry-level pens are all available for demonstration inked up and ready to go. The staff is great too. I got a lot of personal attention letting me try out pens and picking in ink. I really didn't need anything, But I couldn't leave without giving them some business. I'm a longtime user of fountain pens, sealing wax and other old fashioned office supplies. Had heard of this store and went to check it out, maybe buy some stuff Wall displays of inks, etc, is fine. Table display in middle of store is very arty and, somehow, not to be used by customers. When I went to measure something I had with me to see how its size compared to store item, I was asked to remove my small soft-sided briefcase to the cashier's counter. But the briefcase held the item I wanted to compare to their goods. Store staff didn't ask how they could help me, just wanted me not using the table in the middle of the store. That was my single and (so far) only visit in fall 2019. Very disappointing. Probably won't go back. read more

I love this shop. I am an educator and in the last year I got interested in reconnecting with handwriting. I wanted to see if writing longhand, like I did years ago, would improve my research and my teaching. I found Wonderpens at their old location on Dundas West. I picked up a pen and was instantly hooked. I'm now a regular customer. The two owners, Jon and Liz have put together not only a very cool pen and stationery shop, but they are also helping to build a community of like-minded pen and paper lovers. Calligraphy classes, Letter-writing clubs, and now an Antique pen market all serve a growing community of handwriting enthusiasts. Their shop features an amazing collection of hard to find goods, like rare papers from Japan (Tomoe River), Midori notebooks and brass accessories (clips, stencils, rulers, clipboards - oh that clipboard!), as well as high grade G. Lalo writing paper, and much more. Palomino blackwing, Pearl, and the 602 are all there, if pencils are your thing - they also carry some really great mechanical pencils - check out the Kaweco Sketch! On the pen side they have a very impressive array fine writing instruments. From high end Japanese fountain pens, such as Sailor and Pilot to finely-engineered pens made by Kaweco (check out the copper Lilliput!), to starter pens for kids made by Lamy. My favourites are the gorgeous resins on the Edison Pens. I've explored nibs from. 2.4mm through the Extra fine Kaweco nibs, and I've been able to make good choices because Jon and Liz have such thorough knowledge of their products. Ink? Got that covered too. Diamine, J. Herbin *including all 4 from the awesome 1670 line!*, Private Reserve, a ton of Noodler's inks (including the infamous Bay State Blue), Rohrer and Klinger, Sailor, Iroshizuku (OMG, BTW), and more. It really is an impressive collection. And they have (check stock) Noodler's awesome new Plains of Abraham ink, which for my money, is the best ink I've ever used. I'm obviously a supporter of this shop and their mission. This tiny shop is just off Clinton Street in Little Italy. I didn't expect the store to be busy but, there appeared to be more calligraphy fanatics than i originally thought. They have a good selection of pens at the back but an even better selection of inks. We purchased 2 Noodlers inks - Apache Sunrise and Blue Ghost (invisible ink). I like that they had a colour swatch book at the back that you could flip through to see all the available colours. They also have notebooks, cards and paper dispersed around the store. I think what I like best about the quaint store is the fact that they try to talk to everyone and answer their questions in a non-intrusive way. You could tell the people who worked there were very knowledgeable and willing to help. Overall, I think it's great that you can buy small samplers for a decent price and there's also a mystery bag of samples that you can purchase for $8. I have bought from their old location on Carlaw, from their studio shop in Cabbagetown and as of today, online for a birthday present going to a friend who lives in Eastern Ontario. Oh, I also went to see them at Scriptus, the specialty pen show that is held annually in Toronto. I adore this shop. I have always been a pen nerd and while I may have taken a hiatus from using my calligraphy pens and fountain pens, I've rediscovered my love for refillable pens. And who knew that there were so many ink possibilities in the WP inventory. While this may be a specialty pen store, you are treated with respect and with great care whether this is a first visit or your sixteenth. The staff are kind and patient. Liz and Jon are superb PENtrepreneurs! They stock quality products at various price points. So if you want to get a starter pen, maybe get the Pilot. If you work in an environment where the chances of losing your pen are possible, get a cheap thrill with the Jinhao. One more thing. I ordered my gift today at 10 am. By 11 am, a confirmation came through that the order was being processed and shipped. It is a busy time of the year and I expected the earliest the order would be sent would be on the next business day. I am impressed and forever going to sing the praises of Wonder Pens. I've been a fountain pen fanatic, and a paper addict, for years. Wonder Pens is a very dangerous store for me to go into. Not only do they carry a huge range of fountain pens (from the super cheap to the ridiculously expensive), but they carry paper that you can't easily find anywhere else - Tomoe River among others. Their ink wall is amazing, and the availability of samples is always appreciated - being able to try an ink in a pen without having to buy a full bottle is good not only for my budget (which always gets blown when I go in) but also for my storage space. The model I wanted was out of stock but they ordered it in for me and I got a call in about 1 week. I put through a pretty big order with wonderpens, I wanted to support their business during the pandemic. I ordered a few inks and a couple of fountain pens. Upon arrival the Lamy Safari special edition that I purchased had a defective nib with a part of the tip weld missing as well as the part of the weld on the one tine lower than the other. This gave the pen a very scratchy nib. This was not a big deal to me so I called the store to explain and get a replacement nib for the defective nib on my pen. When contacting the store I offered to email a clear picture of the nib tip showing the defect. Their response was the worst customer service I have ever dealt with, they told me the picture didn't clearly show a defect which it did, they also told me it could be user error or not using the proper ink in my pen which was not the case. Their response was to tell me to mail them back the nib so they can test it and try to fix it before replacing the nib on my brand new pen. This wouldn't normally be an issue but were in a global pandemic and the only way for me to mail this nib back to them is to head to the post office putting myself at risk of contracting covid-19. I shouldn't be leaving my house and they shouldn't be asking me to do so. I'm furious about this issue, so I've decided to leave this review to inform other consumers of their horrible customer service. I will be buying a new nib from Stylo.ca which I shouldn't have to and I will never do business with this horrible company ever again. Shame on you for trying to send people out into public during a global pandemic. Avoid purchasing from this company their customer service and policies are horrendous, they seem to care more about a 10 dollar nib than peoples lives.
