Their Korean fried chicken musubi was so tasty, eat it fresh while it's warm. I want to try the rest of their dishes because their meat left an impression. Tried to come back on a weekday. On one of the last days of the trip to Kauai, I was really feeling some chicken katsu plate lunch. After looking up some restaurants, we went to Mark's Place, as it was nearby some of the other sights we were seeing on the island - definitely not a disappointment. It's a pretty small parking lot of less than ten spaces, and they were only doing takeout at the time (as of mid-Feb 2022). Additionally, they had just switched over to a new ordering system, which made the wait a little longer than it should have been, but what really matters is the food. I ordered the Mark's Famous Mix Plate, which was chock full of tasty Hawaiian comfort food: chicken katsu, beef teriyaki, beef stew, rice, mac salad, and chow mein noodles. It was so much that I couldn't finish! The beef stew was probably my favorite, as all the components were super tender. The katsu I was craving, and although the sauce was a little too heavy on the ketchup/tomato taste for me, still solid. I'd definitely recommend this spot, and if you're doing takeout, you can phone an order ahead, which may be the way to go, because it got busy at certain points of the lunch hour! read more

Really good food, great portions at a nice price. The price for trying 3 items versus 2 items or 1 item is only a few dollars difference, so I went with the 3 items. I chose Korean chicken, teriyaki chicken, and beef stew. Surprisingly, my favorite of the 3 was the teriyaki chicken. I live in Seattle where teriyaki joints are common place and I eat teriyaki nearly weekly. But the version here tastes like it comes straight off someone's backyard charcoal grill. The Korean chicken tastes basically like mochiko chicken with a honey dressing. Really crispy, slightly sweet and delicious. The beef stew was tomato based with I wasn't expecting (I prefer a brown gravy), but it was also tasty and chock full of tender chunks of beef. It was a lot of food and I ended up not finishing it (which is rare for me). The 3 plate combo has a pretty big portion for each item on their own. It's definitely big enough for 2 for lunch. It's somewhat of a shame that this place is not open for dinner, because after this I was ready to take a nap. read more

An off the beaten track spot mainly for locals. We were almost sketched out by the location but I had heard this place was legit. Parking lot is very small here. They had a tent set up outside due to covid and you could not go inside. They had a white board with the daily specials and a counter set up to pay. On our 3rd trip to Kauai, we finally got to try Mark's Place... It was closed the times we checked during our previous trips in Summer of 2019 (Closed on Saturdays and Sundays) and Thanksgiving 2020 (we were too late, they close at 730pm). This time we were not gonna be denied. Third time's the charm for us. We ordered for pick-up. We were staying nearby so we phoned in an order for a Korean chicken plate ($14.39) and a salmon poke inari bomb plate ($15.99). The Korean chicken was my order. It was good, it was plenty of chicken that was served on a bed of fried saimin with a scoop of rice and mac salad as sides. I am normally a no mac salad person but I forgot to tell them. Otherwise, I wouldve opted for double rice instead.... The chicken was good but I expected more flavor. The batter was light and perfect. The chicken wasnt dry. I just expected more as far as taste went... The inari bombs my lady ordered, she loved them. You get 3 inari bombs filled generously with salmon poke served on top of somen noodles along with fresh greens & a kochujang vinaigrette. She really enjoyed this one and our meal made for a perfect lunch overlooking Nawiliwili Bay. On our 2nd time getting Mark's Place for lunch, we called ahead again. This time I got the beef stew plate ($14.29) and the lady got a seared ahi salad. The beef stew was delicious, it came with a scoop of rice and side salad. Tender beef cuts in a tomato based stew with potatoes and carrots. Comfort food for me, at its finest. I highly recommend it. I can order this again and again. Customer service was great. They were great over the phone and repeated our order. Same thing when we got there. They repeated it again to make sure it was all correct. Our orders were ready both times by the time we got there, even though they were busy and we were prepared to wait.... Please dont forget to tip the workers. Covid precautions in effect. I stopped by here earlier today with my wife for lunch. We found Marks place from a Yelp search and thought that it looked good. Without that I doubt we would have found it as it's located in an industrial park. Due to Covid, they are only doing takeout orders at this time. They do have a line with proper social distancing taped on the ground and then a giant tent to shade everyone waiting in line. For lunch on this day I decided to go with a combination plate of loco moco and chicken katsu while my wife went with one of the specials which was a salad with crispy chicken bites coated with pesto aioli over fresh greens with shredded carrots, grape tomatoes, cucumbers and a creamy Italian dressing. Whenever we got back to our place we opened our boxes and started in our food. My wife really enjoyed her salad, especially the crispy chicken bites even if she couldn't really tell that they were covered with pesto aioli. Then my combo plate was also good. The chicken katsu was nice and crispy while the dipping sauce had a good flavor to it. Then the loco moco was also good as the beef itself was seasoned nicely and the brown gravy was flavorful. Even the Mac salad here was good and I finished it which I can't say happens too often. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. All those yelpers can't be wrong! Was hungry after a long day and decided to check it out. It's located in an industrial area close to Costco. Small lot in the back. Due to the pandemic, its grab and go. So we had the mini teri chicken bento and the special of imitation crab panko stuffed ahi. The chicken was soft and had several pieces and the stuffed ahi was huge! Good thing we shared. The fish was really fresh and tasty. Portions are big so be prepared to share. Also grabbed a bag of ulu chips which by the way make great omiyage. For what you get, you can beat the price of the food. Only thing it was a long wait ! It was a Monday evening. I was in search of some good local food, after looking through some yelp reviews I decided to come to Mark's Place. The line was not very long and they were quick to give me my food. I ordered some Chicken Katsu with macaroni on the side with white rice. It was average. The only sauce they provided was ketchup, I did order to go so maybe that's why. In a word - no. Definitely a locals only kind of place, tucked back in an industrial area. We thought it would be great based on reviews here and maybe it is if you're local. But for visitors, no. Staff was less than helpful, not welcoming and curt. Food was - in my daughters words - the worst meal we have eaten on this island. I thought I'd be safe with a burger and fries. Added some Mac salad. DD had the chicken katsu, mini size. The chicken was sinewy and heavy on the breading. The rice way overdone and mealy and the noodles had a strong fish taste. After 2-3 bites of chicken, the rest went in the trash. For the price, ridiculous. The fries were good - done to the point of crispy, unseasoned/unsalted and served with two tiny ketchup packets. The burger was small, smashed and served with lettuce, tomato and Mayo. About the size of a whopper jr but not near the quality. The mac salad was 2.99 for a side that was 1/4 cup. Overpriced, bland and a total rip off. Given the less than friendly atmosphere inside, we took a few bites and then the rest went into the trash. Overall - truly the worst meal we have had while on the island. Maybe it's better for locals, but vacationers take a hard pass. read more

I went here for lunch upon a friend's recommendation and it was outstanding for a take out place. We got the Mark's special plate for $19 which had beef stew, chicken katsu, beef teri, rice, noodles, and one scoop of mac salad. I subbed in a green salad for the mac salad to get some greens in and got a side mac salad. The chicken katsu was crisp and juicy, extremely well done, so much so that next time we might get only the chicken katsu. The mac salad had good flavor but had green peas in it which was unexpected. I thought the beef teriyaki was too salty but my partner said it reminded her of those JA fundraisers when they sell you a bento with beef teri, so she gave it a double thumbs up. Beef stew is not my go to Hawaiian food staple but it was superbly done with big chunks of carrot, potato, and super soft beef. The one entree carried two 5 foot centenarians through four meals, so the single portion is more than healthy. I also got the butter mochi which was delicious. The top of course was not crispy since it was packaged, but the mochi had good coconut flavor and the texture was spot on. There is no indoor seating and you get about a 4% discount if you pay with cash. The location is a bit off the beaten path, though still in Lihue. It's near Gaylord's and a nice alternative that locals frequent if you want to eat away from all the tourists in Kauai. We got: loco moco, Korean fried chicken, teriyaki beef, and the beef stew. All of them tasted pretty solid. The two that really shined though were the Korean fried chicken (had a nice hint of sweetness with every bite) and the teriyaki beef. The venue is tuck away among a bunch of business and there isn't anything else around so you and everyone else are definitely coming just for the food. It's a great place to grab excellent food right after you land or as your last meal before heading off the island. The portions are big and the quality is fantastic Was we waited for food you could tell this was a local spot as 90% of the people were picking food up to go on their lunch break and before heading out to the other side of the island. Upsides: Decent food, fast service, a range of offerings at different price points. They have outdoor seating. Downsides: No on site public restroom and no indoor seating. This is great if it isn't rainy and if you don't want to USE a washroom. The alternatives are obvious... It's functionally a walk in and walk out place reminiscent of taco stands in Southern California. The ambiance is utilitarian. The teriyaki chicken sandwich is nice. The bibimbap platter is decent. Came here for takeout on Thursday around 6pm! It some nice outdoor seating, but it was raining so we just took out. I ordered the combo plate ($16) with beef stew, teriyaki beef, brown rice, and potato mac salad. However, I didn't open the takeout until I got back to the hotel and they had given me fried chicken instead of teri beef :( The beef stew was very good, I could have just eaten a whole plate of that. Loved the big carrots, although a few of my meat pieces were all fat. The pieces of meat that weren't fat were super tender and had great flavor. The mac salad was also yummy! I'm not a big fried chicken person, but since it came with it, I did try it. It also had good flavor, but it wasn't as crunchy as I thought it would be for fried chicken. Also came with saimin underneath. Overall, good amount of food, although I wish I had been able to try the teri beef. The first day we tried to visit the spot was closed for some kind of show being shot. The next day we grabbed a 3 meat combo and damn, not one bad item on that dish. Hard to knock this place. Great first meal on the island for our family. Inside is still closed and they won't allow seating outside. Wouldn't be that big a deal if it wasn't hot and humid, and if the food didn't take so long. I understand that the protocol is left over from COVID so again, can't really judge there. And it sort of set the tone for the laid back, "just enjoy the journey" philosophy we would adjust to coming to the island for the first time from a very busy city. Most importantly, the food made it all worth it. I had the sampler platter which had a mixture of beef stew, katsu chicken, bbq beef, macaroni salad and steamed rice. It was amazing. Had a "home" cook feel (hence the time it took to cook) if you had a home cook that knew how to absolutely throw down. Kids had chicken and rice and wife had a teriyaki chicken burger/sandwich. Everything was really well cooked and super flavorful. The katsu chicken, bbq beef, and chicken burger were the highlights. This was our first food destination after arriving on Kauai. I heard good things about Mark's Place and I knew we would be pretty hungry after the plane ride. Mark's Place is located in an industrial area not too far from the Lihue airport. There is not much seating outside so you may have to eat in your car or take your food to the beach or park like we did. I ordered the Two Item Combo and chose the Korean Chicken and Teriyaki Beef. The teri beef while well seasoned, was overcooked. It was not cut into bite size pieces either so it was hard to eat. I did like the chicken though. Very tasty and crunchy. The mac salad was okay. My daughter ordered the Grilled Ahi special. She liked it and said it was buttery and flaky but was still hungry since she didn't eat the noodles or much of the rice. Luckily Mark's Place is generous with their food portions so we were able to share our mix plates with her and still had plenty leftover. read more

Stopped by here before heading to airport, based on the reviews. Ordered the special ginger chicken & teriyaki beef combo plate upgraded to greens & a side of mac. Chicken could've been more flavorful, beef was very tender and flavorful. Side of mac was tiny for the price. Overall quantity of the plate was plenty for 2 and packed securely for to-go to prevent leaks or spillage. I also ordered some chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies to go that were also placed in my bag I wish I would've looked at them before hand because I would've put them back they were completely brown way over baked and HARD. If I would've seen them before purchasing I would've opted not to get them. Really disappointing because the flavor was good but I couldn't get passed how over baked they were.
