Found this place close to the airport. Had great reviews. However i guess my tastebuds are spoiled and expected a little more.. the chow mein that came with the dishes was a little bland, and the Mac salad had a strong wasabi flavor to me. The stew, i was expecting a little more but it was a typical tomato braised stew. The katsu was crispy, but it wasn't a katsu sauce for dipping, but ketchup, so that was a little disappointing. The beef was pretty good, but i thought it was a teriyaki but it didn't have any sauce. My favorite was the loco moco. I could use a bit more gravy but it was tasty. The patty's were soft, not tough. She did say she was going to call us when it was done, so we sat outside. It was so good that me and my husband went back twice on our last day because we didn't want to chance having a bad last meal on the island! We returned only 4 hours after our first visit!! The service, price and food was all on point! Mark's is a casual place where you order at the counter and pick up your food when your name is called. Casual seating outside. Everything we had was delicious! I can't say I liked one entrée more than the other. It really just depends on what you are craving. We tried the Korean chicken, chicken katsu, teriyaki beef, beef stew and loco moco. We got 2-3 entrée combos that come with mac salad and white or brown rice (no extra charge for brown). Korean chicken was lightly fried on the outside and sweet and salty and moist on the inside. Delicious! Chicken katsu was perfectly crispy and the best I have ever had! Nothing wrong with it, just didn't have a flavor we really liked. The bubu arare crusted salmon special: the salmon was cooked perfectly with a golden sear on it and this tasty chili aioli. It came with chow mein, white rice, and I got the tossed salad. Loved it all. I would have normally not ordered this, but Ashley highly recommended it and I'm so happy I listened to her. Large bento box: this had a lot in it. White rice, Korean chicken, steak teriyaki, spam, 1/2 hot dog, corn beef hash patty, pickled veggies. My kids fav was the Korean chicken. We ended up getting more to go. It was medium size pieces, fried, with a sweet sauce. Yum! Everything was good in the box but we didn't love the corn beef hash patty. This place a must-try for Hawaiian food! It's near the airport, so it's super convenient if you've just landed in Kauai. The portions are huge and the food is super dense, so it's the perfect place to try if you're hungry. They have their regular dishes and also a specials menu that changes everyday. I tried the black bean tostada salad (a daily special), which was huge! It filled me so much even though it was a salad - it had romaine lettuce, black bean burger, avocado, salsa, and corn in a crunchy shell. It was filling and tasted so fresh! We had the teri beef and teri chicken and I loved that neither was smothered in sauce. Instead, the meat had great teriyaki flavor and was cooked with care. Mac salad was excellent, but a small scoop. The rice was okay, but not exceptional. Each order was enough for two and we probably should have ordered one two-meat combo to share. We saw lovely desserts in the case, but held back this trip. Don't let this discourage you, but Mark's is hard to find. Once again, my husband was yelling at me to learn how to read a map! Mark's is tucked off a side road in an industrial park. It is takeout only and you order outside under a canopy. They have several picnic tables but they are closed. The menu is very heavy on meat but there are a couple of vegetarian options. We took the easy route and ordered "Mark's Famous Mixed plate" to split. It was a good thing we split, the two of us couldn't finish it. The plate came with beef stew, a small chicken cutlet and beef teriyaki. It was served with a giant scoop of steamed rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. The menu says it comes with chow mein noodles but they were missing (bummer, I would really have liked to try them). The stew was amazing! Thick with the most tender, melt in your mouth beef and loads of roasted potatoes and carrots all in a delicious brown gravy. Although I liked everything on the plate, next time, I will order a double portion of the stew. It was that good! The chicken cutlet was just that - a sliced piece of fried chicken. Nothing special yet tasty none the less. Rounding out the plate was beef teriyaki. Beef teriyaki is often chewy and dry. This was delicious. Super tender, no fatty pieces, sauced just right. Marks Place holds the title of Kauai's top culinary experience wrapped in a box lunch. It's been on top for many years and I don't see that changing any time soon. Located in the beginning of Puhi Industrial Park, Marks Place has long served elevated local favorites like beef stew, Teri beef, bbq everything and many seafood options regularly. What really draws me in is their extensive daily special menu. There's literally 5-10 specials that are too enticing to pass up. Beer battered garlic shrimp with a tangy aioli, check! Thai curry grilled swordfish with noodles, check! Kalbi stir Fry with bbq spicy chicken and fried mandoo, check! In addition to all that they have a good variety of gourmet baked goods and cookies as well! It's always worth a call to see what the specials are and to order ahead to avoid the long line. When my family takes its annual summer trip to Hawaii, we always try to find at least one local favorite restaurant that serves classic, authentic food. By all accounts, Mark's Place seemed like Kauai's spot for some no-frills ono grindz. As a visitor, you've gotta have at least one good plate lunch meal during your trip, so we wanted to find out if we could get one here. My sister and I both ordered the special of the day, which happened to be Furikake-Crusted Ahi; I had mine over mixed greens, while she took hers with the standard rice, noodles, and mac salad. My mom went with an order of Loco Moco ($12.69 for regular size; 2 patties + 2 eggs), and dad decided on a 3-choice combo plate ($13.89) with Loco Moco, Teriyaki Beef, and Beef Stew. I've gotta say, the Furikake Ahi ranks up there with the best ahi I've ever had. It was seared and seasoned perfectly -- super flavorful, I really wish it was a regular part of the menu. 5 stars for that one. The Loco Moco was also nicely done; the gravy in particular had a great flavor to it. The mac salad and noodle sides added a nice finishing touch to each plate as well. We weren't the biggest fans of the Beef Stew or Teriyaki Beef, though, as they were both just a tad bland. Even so, this was for sure a solid all-around meal and a satisfying way to end the day. Mark's Place marks the highlight of my food experiences in Kauai. It's located close to Lihue airport and we headed here right after our flight. There's no excuse you shouldn't come here! It's authentic Hawaiian food that not overpriced and tastes amazing. The first time we went for lunch and it was so good that we tried to go back a second time during dinner, but they were closed. I'm not sure if it was just a random week night that they were closed or Yelp does not have accurate updated operational hours for this business. There's no seating inside the building. They have some shaded outdoor seating on benches. Kauai chickens (and the baby chicks) freely roam the premises and hop on and off the benches. It's probably hotter inside the building than outside. I felt like I was in a sauna when I was waiting for the food. The food takes a while to get ready but the wait is well worth it! I tried loco moco for the first time and really enjoyed it. The running egg yolk mixed with the meat, gravy and rice is the definition of comfort food. The mixed plate is fabulous- my favorite part was the chicken katsu. Fried to perfection and maintains its crunchy texture well. I also picked up some spam musubi for the road- it's so good! They also sell popsicles and some pre-made food you can grab and go. Best spot for loco mocos in all of Hawaii! I've never had a loco moco taste so good that I was already planning my next meal and the meal after that here after taking my first bite. Their patties are so flavorful and so tender unlike regular dried out patties that rely on the gravy for flavor. Such a great spot close by to the Lihue airport.
