This place is a cool, eclectic, established family restaurant. It is a classy dining establishment that is both casual and old school elegant. Started with the sausage sampler for an appetizer. French onion soup and the wedge were served perfectly. Mark is an excellent chef and has an awesome menu with a German flair. The Filet Mignon is the very best beef I have had in my life. Aged 21 days, corn fed, Wisconsin steak! Cooked to medium rare perfection, and very tender. Onion rings on the side and a nice bottle of cab. Niki and Liz is are excellent servers and will take great care of you. She suggested the onion rings as I'm on the low carb diet, and they were delicious. Unfortunately we did not try the dessert due to that stupid diet. If you're at Oshkosh or visiting this part of the country - do not miss this place!! read more

Usually we love this restaurant. However, when we ordered take out on Friday, November 19, 2021, we were highly disappointed. My husband and I ordered the haddock ($16/order, $32/total). This time the fries were soggy and wet and the haddock was over cooked and was not edible. We called the restaurant to let them know and they apologized and said they would make it right. However, 9 days later, we have heard NOTHING from them. I'm afraid we will not be going back there again. $32 is a lot to spend on food that was not edible and for a restaurant that obviously cares more about a buck than their customers. read more

So fun - this fine restaurant was packed on a rainy cold Tuesday for very good reason. We were promptly seated and 2 servers stopped by before we took our jackets off and proceeded to drop in our place settings, utensils and ice water - it was like a David Copperfield slight of hand by both who used orchestrated graceful moves like olympic synchronized swimmers. They finished and the manager stopped by to see if we had been waited on yet and I as I sat down I said yes I think so and he seemed upset and got our regular server who proceeded to take our drink order - mind you we were still in the motion of placing our jackets behind our chairs. The menu was filled with German favorites food n beverages as well as some traditional local favorites like fresh local perch - and don't even get me started on the hearty warm fresh bread (a meal on its own)! We finished and closed the check and were pleasantly surprised it was at least 1/3 less than a typical meal of this caliber. Well done - please open another location near us! read more

The fish fry haddock and service was excellent. After reviewing the menu online beforehand, we were somewhat disappointed to learn that they don't offer their German menu on Fridays due to the fish fry. Understandable, as they need the fryers for the fish, but we were looking forward to trying the German. That said, the fish fry was great and we'd definitely come back if we're back in the area again to try the schnitzels. I have been waiting to try Mark's East Side, one of Appleton's staples for Friday night fish fry, as well as delicious food all around. The place has a very old school supper club feel to it without the pretentiousness. In fact, it was some of the most professional and attentive staff I have encountered in a long time. During my recent trip to Appleton, my husband and I decided to go on a weeknight evening for a relaxing dinner (and take advantage of free babysitting through grandparents). We started off with an Old Fashioned (I mean, how could you not at a place like Mark's). We had few appetizers to share consisting of crab cakes, shrimp cocktail and two complimentary fried sauerkraut balls (free with yelp check in). Everything was delicious, and if sauerkraut is your thing then I would highly suggest this appetizer. My husband ordered a porterhouse aka full cow -- delicious and cooked well, but over indulgent nevertheless. I opted for their evenings special of Chilean sea bass. The fish was delicious, but very rich for my taste due to heavy butter incorporated into the dish. We were advised by locals to try their old fashioned cake for dessert but I was too stuffed to even think about more food. Everything was as advertised and delicious. They do have number of traditional German fare on their menu as well. Our server presented us with a $10 off certificate for next time due to it being our first visit there. I would highly suggest this place and perhaps next time explore more of the German side of the menu. read more

Stoped in for lunch, and being a German restaurant I ordered the Ruben. You could tell the meat had been cooked a while ago, it was tough and stringy. I would not order it again. The noise in the main dining room made it almost impossible to carry on a conversation, unless you shout. I would have to think twice before ordering a meal there again. Mark is the consummate restaurant owner in all the good ways! He is warm friendly and gets to know his regulars. Food is spectacular, drinks are always right mix of alcohol and sugar. I figured moving to Wisconsin I would have a amazing selection of German restaurants however that has not been the case. I have eaten at a few places that claim to have German food but this place by far has the most authentic tasting German so far! Very good service and delicious food! I am looking forward to my next meal here! They do have a tight entryway which is the only reason they lost a star. Being crammed in a tiny area while waiting to be seated as people walk out and trying to stay out of the way so they could get their coats was a bit unpleasant. read more

Have been to marks numerous times in the past For various reasons have not been there for about 18 months. Tonight my wife and I had reservations for 730, arriving about 7. saw people getting up from bar, so sat down on vacated stools. Bartender set up coasters taking our drink order. Had to ask her to wipe bar down before she served drinks. Was wet and sticky from prior patrons. Was apparent she was miffed at our request table was ready close to resveration time we both ordered venier schnitzel with plain spaetzle. Spaetzle was without any flavor or even parsley decoration to lighten up the side dish veal also no flavor. Seems kitchen relies on gravy/ sauce for any flavors to dish searver never told us bread was " by request" until main entree was brought Would have nice to know so it would have been brought with onion soup ( which was good). I realize business is in transition to a new owner . They need to work on service basics and order presentation read more

Our first visit to Marks was great!!!!! Friday night we enjoyed a traditional Wisconsin fish fry. Make sure to get there early. We arrived at 4:30pm and had a bit of a wait but enjoyed a great Manhattan while we waited. When we left the restaurant was packed but people were enjoying themselves. Absolutely worth any amount of wait time. The owner came to our table and made a wine recommendation which was exactly as he described. It was awesome. He even used an airater which was a nice unexpected surprise. The food was VERY good. We have been searching for a good fish fry. I would highly recommended it. Niki was our server and she was fantastic. Delightful personality, proactive, prompt and efficient. We will definitely be going back!!!! read more

Im a serious foodie and very honest when i do a review. We had calamari and its absolutely the best in Wis. I had the tenderloin steak sandwich which was perfectly done and so incredibly tender i could eat it as a sandwich! Also had the French onion soup and that was the best I've ever had. Checked out Thursday during restaurant week because I heard good things. I've never been so disappointed. Ordered the spinach and artichoke dip. Came with a pretzel roll. Dip was burned on top and very little dip. Had they Reuben no flavor (yes even with sour kraut) very little meat a day rye bread hard. French fires were good. Was in town for the NFL Champoinship game and was recommended here by the manager of the #1 rated restaurant on Google, which was closed for a private party. This worked out in our favor. Wow. The decor was amazing - we were expecting an old run down affair, but got a clean, classy and well-cared for establishment. The bathroom could be in an upscale mansion. The food was fantastic - appetizers of scottish egg, a mixed plate of delicious brats and perfectly caramelized onions, and REAL drinks. Moved on to entrees, which were equally awesome. Schnitzel away! And all delivered with really warm friendly service, especally considering we were NY Giants fans! We were sad we had to catch a plane as we would have enjoyed spending the rest of the evening. If this restaurant was near us back in NY, I would be a regular. read more

For all of those restaurants that can't find good help, it's because Mark's has them all! First time visit and we were really impressed. Last minute date night and wanted to try something different. Liked the menu and the reviews were favorable so we thought we'd give it a shot. From the time we called and were greeted by a knowledgeable person who took our reservation we had night hopes. First impressions are important. Arrived 10 mins before our reservation and were given a number and we found a seat at the bar. Within 10 minutes our table was ready and we were on our way. So far so good. They were extremely busy which made this all the more impressive. We informed our waitress that it was our first visit and she brought us a complimentary appetizer from the owner. Really nice touch. We had an appetizer, some soups and I had a schnitzel while my wife had a tenderloin and seafood. She said the steak was tender and cooked perfectly.
