Was looking for a breakfast spot to hit up before work with a colleague and saw this place was a block away and thought, "why not?". We came here and I immediately regretted it when I saw everything looked like it was stolen from the free breakfast at the one of the near by hotels. The quality of food was somehow lower than that of hotel food. None of the food I chose was hot/warm either which didn't help its case. Definitely will not be back. If you want a better cheaper option then I'd suggest going to the donut shop a floor below this place or going to any of the other surrounding restaurants as I'm sure you'll have a better experience there. read more

Sushi wasn't half bad. These are actual sushi chefs making the sushi in front of you. Plus there's a guy taking out leftover pieces and replacing them with more fuller plates so you have more options. What I like the most was the idea of getting a tray and filling it up with my own sushi choices because sometimes you just want a spicy tuna piece and Philadelphia piece but not to buy two whole maki rolls. I ordered a massive pile of sushi and rolls (see pic of my massive order of sushi compared to my lame friend's weak order) that cost $22, which I consider to be reasonable. That included the price of a drink. The rolls and sushi pieces tasted fresh and did not skimp on the fish to rice ratio. The meal left my appetite sated. Really I ate too much, but that isn't the restaurant's fault. It was too good and I couldn't stop. I might get less sushi next time, but do plan to be back. read more

Tip: Check-out before 11:45am with your plate of food and get a discounted price of under $8/lb (except for Sushi). Also, most things are half off or discounted after 2 PM! Otherwise, regular price is about $9/lb -- so heavier foods really add up fast. For a buffet, the food is always hot, fresh, and tasty. The cuisine is mostly Asian, Southern American, and fresh healthy salads. Both the hot food bar and salad bars are very tidily kept. The only annoying part is sometimes, the hot food items take a while to be refilled, such as the steamed sole fish. My faves are the sole fish (steamed, fried, baked -- prepped in anyway), the spicy asian fried wings (these are addicting!), stir-fried veggies, steamed dim sum items, and fried items. I haven't tried the build-your-own stir-fry bar, but I will one of these days. The sushi bar is not my fave because the fish to rice ratio is off -- the slice of fish are always too thin and the rice is too much. For $13/lb -- it's not worth it. When I first discovered this place it was extremely hard to find. I walked around the entire building before finding it. I think they need to invest in better signs that let you know where to go. I didn't know I had to walk to the other side to get the other options. So when I saw only one side I thought that was it. I stopped the staff working their about it but the young lady I spoke with was no assistance. I asked a fellow customer and he guided me the right way. It's a buffet, but it's like a salad bar, where you just pay for what you take - salad bar, hot food bar w/ some very tasty Chinese items ($7.86/lb), salad bar ($7.86/lb), and sushi bar ($11.83/lb)! First time here, so I sampled lots of stuff and came out to $14 ($4.44 for sushi and the rest for the hot items), but next time, I'm pretty sure I could keep it under $10. Liked: the sushi, Singapore noodles, Hunan chicken ried rice, steamed asparagus. Decadent, but tasty - the honey walnut shrimp and orange chicken - but you can get just 1 piece each! Not fan of: the egg roll (too mushy); broccoli beef (way too salty - but maybe just today), and the steamed fish (I don't know why I thought steamed fish on a buffet would be a good idea, but always looking for healthy options). Much better than I expected. I was a bit suspicious on how good the stir fried food would be in Willis building. It is on the second floor of Willis Tower. They have Sushi bar, stir fried station, and buffet section by weight. My friend loved their stir fried so I tried it as well. This reminds me of my college days when the cafeteria has the chef stir fried in front of you. I loved loved the fresh vegetable selections. I loved to eat mixed vegetables but I always have to pick baby corn, onion, and peppers out. Here I could choose only my favorite veggies like bokchoy, mushroom, bamboo shoot, and pea pods. The veggie with Tofu version is $8.6. I chose the spicy sichuan sauce. the dish came out so good. I loved the way they fried tofu. Just a bit fried on the out layer and still soft inside which make those best absorb the flavorful sauce. The sauce would be perfect if it was a bit spicier and less soy sauce. The services were great. Every staff here was smiley and quick at the stir fried station and the check out line so they moved the lunch rush fairly quickly. This fairly new Market Creations is located in the Sears Tower. While tourists may not go ga-ga over a buffet restaurant, this spot is quite popular with downtown office workers. The buffet is by weight, so load up on your hot and cold selections at your discretion. It seems the lines tend to go counterclockwise around the food stations. While nothing I ate was earth-shattering, I enjoyed most every bite. The beef quesadilla tasted almost like a melty hamburger item but my friend said it was too mild. There seemed to be quite a few Asian-style and seafood selections here, along with a salad bar (love the fresh pineapple) and a sushi bar too. With Lent in full force, I decided that i needed to find a few places that would not only be paleo, but also allow for Friday meals (no meat) in the loop. Sushi comes quickly to mind (white rice in limited quantities), and so on the first above 30 degree day in Chicago for 2014, I made the trek over to the Sears Tower to check out the sushi at Market Creations. Finding it: When you get to the Willis/Sears Tower, it's on the 2nd floor. There are signs that give you a general idea where Market Creations is, but there's a lot of other food options here, so pay attention. Once you find it, you'll likely see a line forming to the right - that's the sushi bar. There are plenty of rolls, with all sorts of fillings, creams, sauces... but I was here just to enjoy some simple nigiri. (As you'll see in the picture). Here's what I got 3x Tuna: Tuna was my least favorite, as it had a somewhat off taste... yes, it was a bit fishy. The rice was a undercooked a bit as well, but far better than overcooked overworked mushy rice, which I've had at some buffets. 3x White Tuna: Not bad. This came in 2nd place out of three, as the flavor wasn't as clean/crisp as truly fresh white tuna, but it was tasty here. Would benefit from a small squeeze of lemon on top possibly. 3x Salmon: This was actually quite acceptable! (Notice I don't say good). The salmon wasn't fishy, and was fairly smooth with just the right amounts of fat (though that's based on the pieces you select really... pay attention to the pieces you grab!) Total price: $12 and change. Yes, 9 pieces of nigiri for $12 and change. Great value, right? It's based on the weight of what you order, so this fell just in line for me. Verdict: This place is A-OK. If you're craving sushi and don't need the highest of qualities, and the budget is more important right now, this is a massive step above your Jewel/Dominick's sushi at the grocery store, and likely more affordable as well. I'd stick to just white tuna and salmon next time, as the tuna was acceptable, but not enjoyable. At $1.30 per nigiri, the value proposition here is hard to beat. Get some rolls if you like, which may mask the fish a bit better.. but I'm quite content with my nigiri. Side note: I'll have swing back and try the hot buffet/cold salad area sometime, which is actually far cheaper than the sushi ($11.85/lb). Buffet was $7.85 per lb I believe... read more

They stopped doing the 1/2 priced sushi at 2. It became too popular. Also, at exactly 2:01 all the employees take all the good sushi for themselves and the rest it left out at the salad bar. The buffet selection was always top and the price was never one that left my wallet empty or my credit card balance gasping. Now that I work on the West Side of downtown, I was pleasantly pleased to discover that there is a Market Creations in Sears Tower. Happiness. The only drawback is that it packs out quickly. But that is okay. The food is still on like a light and the price isn't all that bad, still. There is a sushi bar addition to the cafe that I did not recall seeing at the Stetson Avenue location. Some co-workers and I came here for lunch and had a very enjoyable time. Décor: There isn't much to this place from a looks stand point. It's pretty average and nothing that you would remember as soon as you step out the front door. But that's fine, as most seem to come for the food and not for the atmosphere - which is in-eat-out (or just grab-and-go). There are a bunch of tables around the perimeter so you should be able to find a seat if you want to stay and eat (we did). Bathroom: Not here, but just outside in the common area there is one (however, I didn't use it) Staff: The staff do a great job of being Johnny On the Spot with replenishing the food and making things fresh. Additionally, the cashiers are all friendly as well. Food: I've been here a few times and always get the sushi. It's what I call "supermarket sushi" in that it isn't he HIGHEST quality, but it is very good for what it is. There is plenty of variety and everything is pretty tasty. Additionally I had a Miso Soup (tasty) and my friend got the stir fry (which smelled and looked delicious!). Honestly, it doesn't seem like you can go wrong with any food choice here. Value: You can get away with eating cheap if you want, as things are priced by weight, but for me I end up spending more than I plan (I eat A LOT). They opened a small location on the basement level of Willis Tower. Not sure if chinese food was the theme but it was all chinese food. I was excited at first but boy was I about to be hugely disappointed. I got a little bit of everything, literally. It all tasted terrible. Not a thing from my $28 plate showed any culinary skill. This was below buffet food quality and it's not even a buffet. They only buffet style they adapted was how terrible the food taste. The "ribeye" was mothered with cheap sauce and overcooked that it's chewy. The wings are over cooked that it's hard to chew and takes so much effort to get it off the bone. The fish was just dry. Salty. It's like they boiled it in water, dumped some soy sauce on it and call it steamed fish. Basically just copying the form without copying the essence of chinese cooking. The other fish in tomato and whatever, super salty as well. Same with their fried noodles. Even their mashed potato was disgusting. I should have known to back up when I saw how yellow it was. There was more butter in there than potatoes. I even got a newly taken out piece of Turkey and that too was dry to the bone. All of this just indicates they have absolutely no standards. Their chefs don't even taste the food neither do they know how to cook any. Now if this was an actual buffet, off the highway somewhere in a ditch for $8 all you can eat. I would have just been like you get what you paid for. But $28!!! I could have gone to any authentic chinese restaurant, gotten at least amazing dishes and left happy and full. Salad-Salad-Salad....it's what I've been noshing on for lunch....for the past several months. I used to not be a salad lover, then I became a salad-liker, and now a salad-enjoyer. It is easier when there is a huge salad bar to choose from. The salad bar here is plentiful. It runs around $7.50 a pound, and things can add up. It is my goal in life to keep my salad under $8.00 on a daily basis. This salad bar is pretty large with a ton of options. They start out with cut up fruit, then the different lettuces, then the salad dressings (so oddly placed), then the other side holds the toppings. Lastly is the pre-made salads. There is always a good variety of toppings and everything is pretty fresh and nicely stocked. I will say that the protein option, chicken, is diced up and usually dry. I think it is chicken left over from the night before. It is not very good. Overall, a good salad bar. They do have a hot buffet bar, a sushi bar, and a stir fry bar. I haven't had any of these, but I think they would be considered average. The cashiers that work here are the fastest you've ever seen. Even if the line is 20 deep, they will have you rung out in like 2 minutes. read more

These definitely need to make it in your container! There's a sushi bar on the side. When you first walk in is the section that has the sides and the meat choices. Just another of my inherent conflicts: I love a buffet. But I tend not to like crowds, lines or self-serve joints. Conflict resolved with this place. Located on the second floor of one of the world's most famous buildings is Market Creations, a spacious, well-organized, visually appealing and very modern room with cold and hot buffets, a traditional but beautiful salad bar, and a sushi/roll table. The food is well-presented and fresh and the access to it is relatively easy. Or it was this particular Friday before a holiday. We opted for the salad bar. After living in New York, and finding these kinds of places on almost every block of Manhattan, I always wondered why Chicago never had them. There have been a few smaller version in the Loop, but Market Creations would make Daniel Burnham (AKA "make no small buffets") very proud. I guess its location in a classy and gleaming high rise with its sleek, chrome filled walkways would make it difficult to build a dive. I understand there are several locations in and around downtown and the Near North Side, so you don't have to come to Willis Tower. But all in all, this is by far one of the best, reasonably-priced lunch options in the Loop. The Willis Tower renovation also provides a big outdoor terrace where you can take your lunch and sit in some comfort with entertainment weather-permitting. There was a jazz band the day we were here. And the indoor seating is not at all cramped either. You could easily accommodate a small group for an impromptu lunch. Especially good for those have-to-have-a-separate check types. That just happens naturally. So I shall shelve my self-serve cafeteria biases and hightail it to Market Creations anytime I am yearning for a healthy lunch in the Loop. read more

I spent most of college shying away from the food that was served in our cafeteria, so I was leery about trying Market Creations. But, this place is not your average cafeteria. They have an amazing salad bar; tons of toppings, pasta/ tuna/ chicken/ egg salads and marinated veggies (artichokes, beets and mushrooms); a variety of Chinese and American dishes; made to order stir-fry, as well as freshly made sushi. I cannot begin to tell you how dumb I feel for staying away from this place-- everything is so good! The Chinese food is really tasty-- most of it isn't too healthy (orange chicken, wings, fried rice), but if you're looking for a healthier option, the stir fry is perfect. They have lots of fresh veggies and brown rice--you can even get it with tofu. And even though I was leery of the sushi, it was surprisingly good-- I like that you can try just a couple of pieces, rather than having a whole roll. They always have an awesome selection here. My favorites are the sushi, soup, and stir fry. All of my friends who have had the hot bar rave about the selection that is always changing. The sushi is priced so well that it's impossible to beat. Highly recommend the stir fry as well, but don't get the tofu. My one complaint is it tastes like rubber. They have a whole turkey out there every day and it is TASTY. They have steamed sole every day and it is TASTY. And they have a variety of healthy veggies every day. So if you are watching your calories, as I am, this is all a very good thing. It is true they also have alot of gloopy "Chinese" dishes. These are tempting but I try to stay with the low-cal options and have done very well. Now you're probably waiting to hear the best part and here it is! If you dine in, you can actually RETURN what you don't eat! Basically a Chinese buffet except everything is measured by weight. The buffet and salad bar are around $8/pound and the sushi bar is around $12/pound. You can get stir fry, soup and rice a la carte though. Overall, it's a decent lunch option. I like the variety and the food items don't tasted overly oily or salty. They switch up the food items every once in a while, although they do always keep items like turkey, market wings, etc. What I like to do to get my bang for my buck is to get 8 oz of brown rice in a separate container from my veggies and protein. Lots of fresh veggies - and they'll prepare it however you want (Steamed tofu? No problem! Half the sauce? Certainly!) salad bar is one of the best. The food to order is very good. The hot bar and sushi bar are of concern. I went there daily for breakfast for months and all was well. In the fall of 2012 I noticed a change... I would bet a new food manager. The offerings on the hot bar have very little change. The temp of the food is way below acceptable levels... room temp at best. I doubt the dept of health would approve of the temperature of the food. When you bring it back to your office and must reheat it to make it hot you know thats not good. The water under the entrees, is hardly steaming. I sent a note to management on their website and nothing has changed... A buffet is required to change the utensils when you replace a hot dish with new food but they do not do so. They simply put the old utensils in the new food... Not good. The sushi is made starting at 7:00am for the 11:30 to 3:00 lunch. When you walk by entrance at 7:30 am you see trays of pre-made sushi sitting on the counter not in the refrigerator. Again not good. I am very careful what I get there other than the salad bar. I wish they would put more care in keeping the food hot and sushi cold as I work in the building and would patronize them more if they did. read more

Ever since the place opened a couple of weeks ago, I've been tempted to try it. Especially since it makes the entire area by the elevators I use every day smell of Chinese food (and when they're closed, it smells of tortilla chips from Salseria across the way). Anyway, I wandered in to investigate one day, and while they do admittedly have some decent-looking options, the pay-by-the-pound concept means overpriced foods. Luckily, I got to try it out because I wasn't paying for it. My supervisor rewarded me for working a 14.5-hour shift by buying lunch there the next day. I, of course, went straight for the sushi. First of all, if you're going to make maki rolls and name them after things that aren't the list of ingredients, you need to print what the ingredients are! A "spicy tuna roll" would most likely contain tuna and something to make it spicy. A "spider roll" or "rainbow roll" can at least be found in common sushi bars and maybe you've got a photographic memory and you'll know what's in it - or you've likely had one before and while you can't remember what's in it, you do remember you liked it. However, a "Texas Roll" and "Las Vegas Roll" give no clue as to the ingredients - especially when placed side-by-side and look EXACTLY THE SAME before investigating a cross-section piece. So upon grabbing one or two of pretty much every roll up there (again, I wasn't paying!) I grabbed some soy sauce and wasabi and headed to the group so it could be paid for. I think it was about $12 for my by-the-pound sushi, and it wasn't filling enough to be considered $12 worth of sushi. It also wasn't good. The rice was bland and dry, like you'd sadly expect would happen when you leave a roll sitting out on a tray for extended periods of time. The other issue with a sushi buffet is how long the food is sitting in the temperature "danger zone". I can't say for certain it was my sushi from this place, but I spent the next few days with mild-food-poisoning-type symptoms that should not be mentioned in such a public forum. The prices are probably better on average than Salseria, but Augustino's is better quality for the same price (and that's not saying much). I used to work in the Sears Tower and this was always my first choice for lunch. The salad bar and chinese food are really good. The sushi is also good (much better than you would expect for a buffet). It's a little pricey, but you pay for what you get and you get good food. The lines can get really long though. read more

I'm still trying to figure out a way to beat their food by the pound pricing system. Any tips? They always make me stop lifting it ever so slightly when it's on the scales. It's nice to be able to get yourself exactly how much of whatever it is you fancy that day, but the appeal doesn't carry much farther for me. The salad items are fresh enough, the hot foods are decent, and it's better than your average buffet, but it's still a buffet. It will always cost just a little more than you expected when it comes time to weigh in. I came here for a mid-afternoon lunch on Christmas Eve two years ago when I was scheduled to stay later than everyone else in the office. I went for lunch today as I was inexplicably craving sushi and somehow had never been. I went downstairs at 11:50 - glad I did as I know the line's often out the door. Got about a lb of sushi - I know because it was $11, and it's 12.09 a lbs or so. The summer roles were a little mayonnaise-y for me, the spicy tuna was a TINY bit fishy, and the smoked salmon roll was just not my taste (but might be yours). I never could have gotten that much sushi anywhere else around here for 12.24 with tax. Plus, you don't have to order at a counter and then wait. Self-service is a terrific lunchtime luxury. I'll be back and now know what rolls to avoid - I might also try ordering a couple instead, just to see how that goes. I'll also just hope the summer roles have a different sushi chef next time - a little drier would be much better. read more

A perfect lunch destination for anyone in the vicinity of Sears Tower. Far better than an average cafeteria, a pretty impressive array of food options - hot, cold, everything in between. I've developed a habit of making a beeline for the sushi bar, where I ignore everything on the menu and invariably get a nice, healthy custom vegetarian roll. Even though the place gets quite crowded, seating's a plenty - sit inside and look out at the bustling streets below or pick a table outside and watch the interior art work over lunch. Had a great leisurely lunch with a couple of co-workers here today and just for a brief hour -with talk ranging from work stories to diaper changing experiences, rather than discussions of layoffs and the state of the economy - life felt normal!
