This is a place I come to for Gyros for years and especially after several other places like Micky's down the street and Billy Boy's on 95th & Ridgeland I suspect switched from Kronos to Korfu meat that tastes sweeter, that is not really bad tasting but I just don't prefer it over what was sold all over years ago. I think Kronos raised their price that maybe everyone is switching to Korfu??? So I haven't been here in too long and now notice the same switch to the sweeter tasting meat! Anyway, not a fatal problem seeing more places are switching this way, but what makes this place stand out for me, is almost every time I come here I get into a nice conversation with many of the friendly employees over the years and have never had a bad meal for over some 15 years or so. read more

You go in and right away it reminds you of the nostalgia of living in Chicago and being able to eat at one of the many Chicago food joints: dogs, gyros, burgers, etc., Each time I've gone the service has been great and the people have been friendly. I saw someone write that the chicken gyros were horrible, but I get a chicken gyro every time (hold the tomatoes, onions, and mayo, but add Italian dressing). Mickey's down the streets gives you the driest, fattiest, nastiest chicken, but this place gives you tender, juicy chicken that is flavored well. Their fries are pretty amazing too. Spotted this place a few days ago when we drove past. Husband's a huge fan of gyros, so we had to give this place a try. We stopped in there today and got the gyro meal deal which had a gyro, fries and a medium drink. The gyro itself was HUGE. Seriously, there had to be at least 8 ounces of meat on it. Sandwich was a little greasy, but still very tasty. The fries were hot, crispy and delicious. The tzatziki sauce was AWESOME SAUCE. I loved it. My husband prefers the tzatziki sauce from Ariston in Hazel Crest, but I find Ariston's tzatziki a little too sweet. Markella's tzatziki is savory, not sweet and much closer to tzatziki I got growing up in Melbourne. The restaurant itself is spotlessly clean and the staff were cheerful and friendly. The cost for two gyro meal deals came to just under $15 - for the quality and quantity of food, is a steal. read more

I had enough to take home for dinner! The fries are awesome too. Everything is made fresh and piping hot. My onions and tomatos were crisp and juicy with the creamy tzatziki sauce and meat. In the past, I have enjoyed the food at Markella's, but man, tonight was terrible. We ordered a beef sandwich and a large fries. The bill was $12, which was pretty steep, I thought. But normally the food is so good, I did not blink an eye. Unfortunately, the bun was soggy and the beef was dry. The bun was so soggy, the sandwich fell apart and I had to move the beef to rye bread. The beef was tasteless and dry. And although the fries were plentiful, they were not seasoned at all. Doubt I will spend my money there again. read more

This is a place that all of the people I work with talk about. Whenever you're looking for the Chicago Style/Greek food, everyone at my work knows that you have to go to Markella's. I almost always order the Chicken Pita or the Gyro plate. The serving sizes are very large and you always will end up with leftovers and the food is great! The employees are very nice and do their best to make sure everything is in order and their restaurant is always clean. They also have gambling machines in the restaurant, if that is something you would be interested in. I'm impressed by their hot dogs. So many places don't do them right. Simple steamed dog with relish, mustard, onion, pickle and celery salt (the latter key point) that just satisfies your palette. What's not impressive is their gyro sauce. Stereotypical sour cream based sauce when it should be made with greek yogurt. Cucumbers are not present in it either. No, just nothing special to report. Needed to grab a bite, some carbs. Ordered a pizza puff, grilled cheese on pita and mozzarella sticks with marinara, with a bland lemonade. Almost $14.00 with tax and the tiniest bag of food I've ever had at that price point. For that price I could have had a real decent dinner elsewhere. As far as foods that were of the type I ordered, I've had them better at other hot dog type places like this and larger portions. The grilled cheese pita was really silly, a glob of American cheese inserted into a half grilled tiny pita. See no reason to return. Not at all happy with stands like this in the Oak Forest area and I've been to a couple. The further drive to "Portillo's" in either Crestwood or Tinley Pk. seems to be more worth it. read more

We saw this place in passing on our way to Chicago and stopped for a quick bite to eat before a wedding (you never know what you are going to get with wedding food!). Man am I glad we stopped!!! We ordered mozzarella sticks, French fries, and chocolate shakes. I kid you not, the French fries were the best I have ever had. And I have had my share of fries! They were perfectly crispy on the outside and melty on the inside. Not at all dry, greasy, or overcooked like fries so often are. The flavor was fantastic. If France were the creator of French fries, they would ask this guy for tips. My mouth is watering as I write this, thinking of these fries. The chocolate milkshake was pretty amazing too, made with real ice cream in perfect proportion, the perfect accompaniment for the heaven fries. OK, I'm changing my opinion on this. Previously, I gave it two stars. I'm upping it to 4 stars. A few friends wanted some "greasy Greek" one afternoon and since it was close, we headed to Markella's. While you still get a "trailer park feel" from the place, they pushed out the food quickly and it was surprisingly good. I had a gyro and while it was a bit greasy, it was much better than I expected. I also got a Chili Tamale and when I got home, my two year old wanted to try it. She ate the entire thing! I think they also switched brands on the pizza puffs because my buddy said it was "the good one" (there are 2 brands that these places buy... one is decent and the other is really good). I went back one other time after that and again, the food came out quick and it was very fresh tasting. Looks like things have turned around at Markella's... I'll be going back! read more
