Didn't detect catatracts. I had been a customer of Dr. Spenser since 1998 when he was in Edgewater on Clark Street and he was always honest and dependable. But a year ago I took the drivers test and barely passed. He gave me an exam, put me on the slit lamp, and seemed not to worry. I October I was having blurry vission. I came back and once again Dr. Spenser gave me an exam including the slit lamp. He told me my contacts were dirty and to buy a different solution. Never mentioned the word cataracts. It helped a bit but by February I could barely see street signs. I called and his receptionist told me to see an opthomologist. After five minutes the opthomologist said I has bad cataracts. The surgeon examined me two weeks later and said the same thing. I had cataract surgery in June and now I see 20/30 without glasses. As an avid yelper I came here based on the awesome reviews. My eye exam was fine, the doctor was nice and I was seen at my appointment time. Due to Covid they ask everyone to wait in the car. As I walked there they were nice enough to let me wait inside because it was a really hot day the day of my appointment. Here's where I'm like eh I probably won't come back here. I struggle with my insurance and eye doctors. They all assume I have "Davis" which I do..but I pay additional for blue cross blue shields vision plan. No one has ever heard of this and they question me on it. When I called for my appointment the receptionist said oh I found you under Davis vision. Sigh..ok. When I filled out my paperwork and brought both of my insurance cards I was told no I already got you. When checking out I was told I have a co pay, I stated I do not with my blue cross blue shield. She then started explaining I only don't have a copay if I don't get glasses or contacts...this didn't sound right to me but I wasn't going to argue as my prescription didn't change and I've been wearing my glasses more so than my contacts. I got home and looked up my insurance information..I definitely do not have a copay. I recommend knowing your insurance if you use this doctor. read more

I've gone here since I was a little kid and I used to love the Dr's and office staff but lately it seems the quality of care concerning fittings have gone down. The new receptionist couldn't seem to understand what needed to be adjusted or communicate to the Dr what needed to be adjusted and seemed very irritated and annoyed with the fact that I even needed them adjusted in the first place. It's pretty disheartening to even go back, especially because I was convinced to buy new frames when I only needed new lenses and I can't even wear the new pair because of how badly they fit my face. Editing my review due to more shit happening: they ended up taking both pairs of my glasses to "fix" the issue by ordering new lenses after failing to adjust the frames I was pushed into getting, which was a huge problem due to the fact that it would have left me to drive home blind. They saw no issue with that until I brought up how fucked up that was and proceeded to tell me to just bring them back another day. However due to the phone call my mother received today where the new bitch of a receptionist talked over her multiple times, told her she wasn't listening (while telling us they were going to order a new pair, which we did not want and were not being listened to), and told us we were not welcomed back there and to find another eye doctor. Editing after the fact again: We were told we would not receive our prescriptions until they received invoices from our insurance. After looking into the FTC they were not adhering to the Eyeglass Rule. Here are some directs quotes from the FTC on the matter: "Make sure they give eyeglass prescriptions at the end of the eye examination without the patient having to ask for it and without charging an extra fee for the prescription. Asking the patient if they want their prescription doesn't comply with the Rule. You must provide the prescription automatically unless the patient specifically refuses the prescription, in which case you should make a note of their refusal in the file. Your staff also must give prescriptions to patients before you or anyone at your office offers to sell them glasses." Never gave us our prescriptions at the end of our examination or when trying to sell us glasses. The FTC also put out an article called "Buying Prescription Glasses or Contact Lenses: Your Rights" which directly states "A prescriber cannot withhold a copy of your prescription for non-payment of the fees that your health insurance should cover". read more

My mom went in as an emergency patient last month. The receptionist was patient and caring. They were very kind and took her in right away. Doctor Odum was very sensitive to her needs, spent a lot of time trying to help her, and followed up with her the next day. This place was all about patient care and not about money. She would not stop raving about the care she received. We would highly recommend this eye care to everyone! read more

I absolutely cannot rave about this place enough. Dr. Odum was so nice and thorough and made me feel very relaxed and comfortable. As for the front desk, Isabelle is amazing! I did my contact lens training with her and I cannot rave about her enough. I am in my mid 30s with very bad vision and I have never worn contacts. I have always been too afraid and intimidated to try them. I tried putting them on in a different doctor's office years ago and they were not helpful at all so I just gave up and never tried again. Isabelle changed all of that. She was very good at showing me exactly what to do, shared her tips and tricks for easily getting them in and removing them. When I started panicking about removing them she calmly showed me the best way to do it. I have watched numerous videos on how to use contacts and nothing came close to her teaching skills. I am feeling so happy and confident and wish I had done this years ago! All around great experience, from my actual exam with Dr. Odum to my experience and contact lens training with Isabelle. I've been seeing Dr Spencer for a very long time and the experience has always been great. I had the unfortunate experience of a scheduling with Dr Odum. My appointment was at 3:30pm I arrived at approximately 3:12pm. Dr Odum was with a patient at that time. At approximately 3:47pm another patient arrived for his 4pm appointment. At approximately 3:55pm Dr Odum called the patient who had arrived roughly 10 minutes prior for the 4pm appt and totally over looked me who had been there for more than 45minutes waiting. Is it patients no longer get called based on arrival/plus appointment time OR could it be the 4pm patient was a white male and I was a black female? I must also mention the appointment that ran across my 3:30pm appointment was a white female. From my view this was the most blatant racism acts that I've experienced in a while. Needless to say I will never schedule an appointment with Dr Odum, definitely can't trust her with my health care!!!! read more

DO NOT RECOMMEND. I had a horrible experience with Dr. Spencer. He was extremely patronizing and essentially laughed at me throughout the entire appointment. When I told him my profession he laughed and said "I have people in the guild doing what you're TRYING to do..." and implied that I'm unsuccessful in my field. The second thing that blew my mind is that he repeatedly told me "You're not special, your eyes are fine." He then proceeded to give me a prescription anyway. Lastly, he blatantly ignored anything I said. He insisted throughout the entire appointment that because of the medication I take my eyes nose and mouth are dry. I repeatedly told him I have never had that issue, which he didn't seem to even hear. The only positive thing about the experience were the two office staff members. They were lovely. I will not be returning and will actively encourage people to steer away from Dr. Spencer. read more

I've been having vision problems for the first time in my life, and I decided to call a local eye doctor. I've never used my vision insurance before and I didn't know a whole lot about it. The receptionist on the phone scheduling my appointment was rude and told me I wasn't very helpful with the information I was giving to her. She was short, unfriendly, and was annoyed I didn't understand my policy. I told her I didn't think the office would be a good fit because she was very rude. I can't say what kind of Doctor Mark D Spencer is, but his receptionist lacked customer service, patience, kindness, and is a very poor representation for his business. My insurance has never been an issue, in fact all i had to do was give the name of the insurance company when i went in and they had all the information they needed by contacting the insurance company. My usual doctor is Dr. Blount-Odum and I love her. Touching or putting drops in my eyes really freaks me out for some reason and she is able to do it with no problem when she adds the anaesthetic to my eyes for a certain test. I also love, love, LOVE the ladies at the front desk-always helpful with telling me what frames look good or bad. I've recommended them to a lot of people and my whole family goes here. read more

I love this Drs. Office. Dr. Spencer and Dr Odom are very personable and knowledgeable and put you at ease with their calm demeanor. I have yet to have a question or concern that they couldn't explain and answer when it comes to my vision. The staff here is amazingly friendly and competent. Walking into the office is like walking into an old friends home with the warmth and kindness that greets you. They have a large selection of frames, so I've pretty much just assigned that duty to Isabelle, who picks frames that suit my face, not necessarily the fancy latest styles that I choose, which look ridiculous on me. She has yet to steer me wrong and I've been going here for 15 years. They accept insurance and have flexible hours conducive to many work schedules. This place is way better than the chain eye care centers that I used to frequent. The only downside is that the office/ building is a bit dated, but that is also part of its charm. read more

I've been going to Dr. Spencer and Dr. Odom for almost 20 years. They are both awesome eye doctors! The staff is also amazing. I've had issues with my eyes in the past, where I needed to get in immediately. They have always been able to accommodate me. I had broken my glasses earlier in the week and thought my insurance would not kick in. When I called, Daisy actually got on my insurance website and checked for me. I was able to get in right away and order new glasses. They also fixed my old glasses for me while I was there! I was not expecting that. I love the small, local family feel to the office. I finally found a great optometrist and I couldn't be happier. I moved to Chicago 5 years ago and have been struggling to find a doctor who is friendly and knowledgeable until I met Dr. Spencer. I have pretty poor vision and get a little anxious about yearly eye exams due to some drs making me feel like an inconvenience Dr. Spencer was extremely friendly from start to finish. He answered all my questions and didn't rush me. He provided me with extensive education and helpful solutions to several problems I discussed with him. In the past, my contacts were expensive as they have all been custom made and take a week or so for trials to come in. Dr. Spencer was able to fit me in affordable contacts during the exam. I've never been able to leave an initial exam with trials contacts the same day! The receptionist was also very friendly and helpful. She provided feedback to assist my boyfriend in picking out a pair of glasses to fit his face. read more

Worse optometrist I have ever visited. Would not recommend this to anyone. The receptionist at this location are pretty much the "eye doctors". I went in asking to see the doctor to see if i could improve my eye vision since i need it for a pre employment check up. The ignorant receptionist just told me my eye vision will not improve because I did not wear my eye glasses when I was younger. She told me that I will get not get the job because my vision is weak. I was very nervous and concerned about an eye issue I was experiencing and after a couple of months of being dumb and stubborn (I don't recommend these attributes towards ones health) I began to look for an eye doctor. After coming across some discouraging phone calls and not knowing much about insurance, I happily came to a friendly, welcoming, and warm voice found at the Spencer office. The receptionist, Daisy, was very sweet and so helpful. I'm a terribly introverted personality and 90% of the reason why I stay away from doctor appointments is because of the awful rudeness I usually experience with the front desk staff. But, luck had it that Daisy was far from that. She came across as though she really enjoys her job and people. I schedule a visit for the following week and had the pleasure of getting an exam by Dr. Spencer. He was so kind and so informative. This was my first eye exam as an adult and I had no idea what questions to ask in regards to my concern and reason for even being there. Dr. Spencer has a presence about him that calmed my nerves and assured me of my situation and the next steps to take. I'm so grateful for caregivers that actually enjoy helping people, and that is what you'll find at this office. read more
